A Cautionary Tale told by JBEITEL - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 General

So I bought this killer red metal battery cover from mobilefun. When I got it I realized it had no 4g antenna in it. I would only get 3g and 1x. I suspect it was made for foriegn models that dont use 4g. Anyway, buyer beware on overseas accessories.

something doesn't make sense here... The 4G antenna on our note 3 is internal... you would have to remove a dozen screws and crack the case open to get to it ... there are no components in our stock N3 battery cover
Maybe it was because the metal case was blocking enough signal to kill your 4G reception but definitely not because an antenna was missing.
antenna shown in this picture .... you can see the white cable running around the battery compartment and plugged into the 4G antenna's U.FL connector

Yeah the antenna is not build into the battery cover. The metal cover was blocking the signal. If you get a metal case or cover most of the time it will block some kind of signal.

That sounds logical. Thanks. But what are the other two spots that push on the pins? Maybe nothing. They look plastic

I guess the cautionary tale then would be don't buy metal. Lol

those don't push on to any pins... look closer to what they line up with when the cover is installed... directly under the headphone jack... they are SD card lockers to keep your micro from backing out of the slot on a drop.

Right and all the pins are for wireless charging and for the flip cover, that's the three pins on the side. The top two pins on the back of the phone are for NFC antenna. If you get a wireless charging cover. The 4G antenna is at the top right corner of you have the phone face down.

I would think a metal back cover might increase the signal not decrease it?

3g is way better. Went from -115dbm to -85dbm. But that does me no good without 4g

What are the two holes on the back of the phone?

To the left of the speaker grill. Can't figure it out for the life of me. It has contacts so it has to be something.

External mic for speaker mode, when you flip the phone over? Completely random guess.
pretty sure I read a review that said the rezound has 2 noise cancelling mics.
Those holes are for the antennae. The noise cancelling mic looks like it's on the side. The thunderbolt had similar holes.
I asked the guy at the Verizon store and he said it has to do with wireless charging but that didn't make sense to me since it has contacts and wireless charging requires a different back cover.
I did notice some cases have a cutout for them and some don't.
There's no mention of them in the user manual.
Yeah. That is the main reason I would like to know. My case doesn't have the cut outs and I don't want to cover them if they were mics.
Surely there wouldn't be microphones built into the battery cover though.

Not mics, not for wireless charging, not for a dock.

If you remove the battery cover, you should see that there are copper contacts on the inside of the cover, and that the holes in question are the mounting points of those contacts to the battery cover. To my knowledge this is the only function these pin holes provide, and I see no way for covering these would have a negative impact on the device.

I'm getting a chuckle at some of the responses. Not sure if serious, though!
The five sets of contacts on the battery door are all antennae for the various radios. CDMA, Bluetooth, Wifi, LTE, GPS.
Thought I read some where that's where u short it out to put into a download mode of some sort

Holy test points!
I can only imagine that the holes that lead into the CDMA antenna contacts are for test points, as there is probably little reception inside the factory and an auxiliary antenna might be used to obtain a signal. OEM accessory covers, like the wireless charging and extended battery covers, do not have these holes, nor would they be needed since they are not supplied with the base unit.

spray painting the battery door?

Has anyone painted their battery door? I've got an extra and I want to paint it white, but I haven't a clue how to do it. I assume sanding since its plastic.
No sanding just use plastidip for temporary yet good looking paint or if you're 100% committed use the plastic bonding paint available at any walmart. No sanding needed and turns out great. Thin even coats with time to dry in between. Post pictures

I did this w/ my Droid Charge using RC Model Spray Paint.
Learn from my mistake on painting phones....... Let it dry!
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
amazon has a bunch of color cases for this phone already. Id get a case. however if your up to a real challenge get some carbon fiber from fiberglast.com and go to town. i did an otterbox once, took three tries to get it looking ok. patience is key. best of luck
Yeah, but no color battery doors. I've been waiting for HTC to come out with their red and white battery doors.
Did you ever end up painting it... I just got a spare and and want to paint it buy want to know what you used

hahaht that cool i havent thought about that
Yeah me too, what's the best way?

Use the plastic bonding paint. It'll work but be patient and let it dry between light coats. No sanding required

How durable are these paints? Will they chip over time?
I used krylon fusion and I think it looks pretty good. Hard to get even coat with no drops on the extended battery where it plateaus though. But all in all not too bad

I spray painted mine. Looks great but the slits for the speakers got covered and muffled the sound. I took a toothpick to clean it sorta worked
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
Anyone got pics of these? I'm considering doing white on mine, also will this interfere with the antenna since it is located in the battery door
No my antenna works fine
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
The Krylon Fusion holds up very well just gotta be careful not to do coats too fast or it'll goop up and be soft.
I recently tried this, there was some chipping on the side, but i think that was because i wasnt able to do evan coats on the side. overall it looks great, especially when paired with a red soft gel case that i picked up from best buy the white accents with the red cover looks bad ass to say the least
Jack seems to like it
I'm to scared to try this. Don't u need those gold looking things on the back door to get reception.

My reception has been fine all day. the paint doesnt interfere with the gold ant, considering those are on the inside of the back

Galaxy S II back -- does anyone have a non-water damaged picture?

I received a GSII i777 in trade today and I think the phone may be water damaged, and I can't find a sticker so I think it may have been removed. Does anyone have a back picture of their phone without the battery and case, and can you post it? Please white out your IEMI, no one wants to see that.
Gratzi.
I can't find one on my either. Unless it is this. But there is definitely one on the battery.

I thought they were internal.
I think if i remember correctly the actual sticker is inside the phone from watching the att galaxy s2 unboxing xda style video in the xda tv portal by adam outler. so you have to actually take the phone apart. hope this helps

That depends on the phone, my old Nokia had sticker right under the battery. And usually phones have more than 1, some of them are inside.
This is what I thought. The i9100 had an external sticker, so I was mildly confused. Looks like it is okay! However, it doesn't power up lol. Do you guys know how AT&T's return policy is? Can I just walk into the AT&T store and get a swap (I have an account, but I didn't buy this phone from them). Also, I don't have a data plan. I have been going through Samsung for tmobiles stuff since I don't have an account, so if I must go through them then I can.

I thought it was that dot too.
The iPhone puts it in the headphone jack. That dot is the only white spot under the battery cover, besides the sticker on the actual battery.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
Yes, that small white dot is indeed the moisture detection sticker. If you unscrew the back panel and gently lift up the back plate, you will see the entire sticker in that area. So even if someone bleached out the visible dot, AT&T could open it up and see the entirety of the sticker.
Just went through this a week ago on a friends phone.

Otter car dock mod!!

Don’t know if this is where this goes or not but it’s about accessories..
So I have the Sprint car dock and it works great (even if it only launches the dock half the time). I went out and bought the Otterbox commuter case and I love it. The good news is YES the case does if in the dock…. The bad news is the flap that covers the UBS port does not. So I had two choices, one cut the rubber that protects the USB port off and risk all kinds of pocket lint and dust getting in there or modify the dock… SO
I modified the dock… all I did was take a Dremel (best tool ever) and cut away the plastic edge. Now you have to be careful because it would be easy to “slip” and cut into your USB port. Also the LED power light is right there so watch that too!!!
Here is what 10 minutes of work look like!!

I will sand it a little but I think it turned out great!!! Now I can use my case and dock!!! I would take a picture of the phone in the dock but the phone is all I have to take pictures at the moment lol.
Let me know what you think??
Well done, problem solved. Looks fine to me. And yes, dremels are awesome ! Dremels, 5 min epoxy, and duct tape. I can do anything!
indeed nice! I bought mine today and was thinking.. just a little more room and I could totally Dock my otter box! but, I thought I would just cut off the little flap to the Charge port. instead, You've inspired me!
Thanks guys. I did not want to hurt the case as I get way more use out of it then the dock. But with the usb cover out it actually covers up the cut on the dock so you don't see it anyways. Looks great!

You made the right decision.
When you have to mod something , you want to avoid reducing functionality if you can. Cutting the dock doesn't change its functionality (even if it didn't fit after the cutout) , while removing the USB cover removes a feature.

Official Samsung Note 3 Flip Cover Battery Door

I just bought my Note 3 from T-Mobile USA, and I'm loving it.
I attend UCLA, and Samsung was having a promotion here where they were giving out flip covers to Galaxy device owners.
I chose the black one to match my device, but they offered to give me either the white or pink one tomorrow.
The fake leather is pretty nice, but it does feel a bit more plastic-y than the battery door the phone came with.
It clips on pretty easily, and there is even 1 card slot inside the cover.
The edges of the door and the cover actually stick out about 5mm past the edges of the phone; I suspect that
will help with very short drops. It doesn't make the phone much thicker either.
I doubt this is really a big deal to anybody though, haha.
I wanted to get a picture of it on the phone, but my Note 3 is the only camera I have in my dorm.

M8 isn't this the wireless charged flip cover and not the simply one? I ask because i see in the inner back side 2 pins and it seems some cabling underneath

I'm thinking now that isn't the charging version because I don't see a view window. I don't know why a plain flip cover needs the electrical contacts, but I've never looked at the plain flip covers for the other models either.

Kick Stand case for Samsung Galaxy NOTE 3
Well I am also looking for a wallet case for my Note 3 but for till then I have pre ordered this Kick Stand case from Fommy as cant take Risk with Note 3 at any condition so just going for this one right now...will be receiving it on October 10 as it is stated in the mail..so surely gonna put up the pics and reviews the moment I will receive it
Those pins are for the wireless charging. The NFC antenna is inside the battery.
It is looking very cool.
I think that the wireless charging cover has more pins. Those two are just for waking up the display when the flip is opened.

Isn't it the magnet that wakes it up?
I was under the impression the pins tell the phone a case is there and when/how to modify the display. On a genuine Samsung cover the phone even knows what color the case is, or so I read.
