Having searched for a long time for a solution in using Odin under Mac OSX environment, I've finally found a solution! A lot of people say can't , but here it is...
1. Load up VirtualBox's Windows session
2. Download the Samsung USB drivers in Windows from the attachment and extract in a folder.
3. Closes the Windows session
4. Go to the USB setting of the Windows session
3. Reboot SGS2 in download mode
4. Plug in the phone to USB
5. Add a new USB filter <SAMSUNG Gadget Serial [021B]>
- Note: There could be a error box showing up, ignore it
6. Unplug USB
7. Load up Windows session again
8. Once loaded, plug in the phone again and wait for new hardware prompt
9. Add the required drivers from the downloaded file
10. Unplug USB
11. Load Odin
After Odin is loaded inside the Windows session and the phone is plugged in, the COM box will turn yellow and you can flash whatever you want!
My setup is like this:
Mac OS: 10.7.2 Lion
Win OS: Win XP SP3 32 bit
VirtualBox: 4.1.6 (with USB extension pack)
For those who are using difference OS versions, please report the results and help others! I'll try to generate a list from the feedback.
Thanks, I've been looking for a way to do this forever.
Working on my setup:
OSX (Host) - 10.7.2
Win (Guest) - XP SP3 32bit
VBox - 4.1.8 (USB extention pack)
Virtualbox Odin crash
I actually managed to work out who to get as far as getting Odin to recognise my phone (after ages of fiddling, i found the usb filters in virtual box).
HOWEVER, when I START odin to flash a rom, it reboots my VM. Anyone got any ideas what might cause this?
FYI:
I am trying to flash a previous rom version onto my Galaxy Note (LA4 back down to KKA [United Kingdom]) so that I can run the one-click CF-Root.
NB:
Running OSX Lion
Virtualbox version 4.1.8
Windows XP with service pack 3

check the "enable usb 2.0 (ehci) controller" into machine configuration. that solves the OS reboot for me.
May have to try this cause it sure isn't working with VMWare
You legend
I have been looking for the samsung device drivers for ages. Working great with virtual box. Good bye boot camp, you were only there for odin these days anyway! Thank you.
Thank you !!!
Thank you very much !!!
Thanks!

wow. awesome find here.
this worked for me as well. however, I used the drivers and odin and recovery files found here in the 2nd post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275031
(drivers http://devphone.org/files/gtab7/Sprint_P100_Samsung_GALAXY_Tab_USB_Drivers.msi)
OSX 10.8.2
WindowsXP SP2
VirtualBox 4.2.4
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
OKAY, very interested in this.
I have the Galaxy s3. Would I download this..
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.2.6/VirtualBox-4.2.6-82870-OSX.dmg
and then follow the directions listed in OP?
Want to eventually do this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
Good stuff!!!
Works in my setup:
Mac OS: 10.8.3
Win OS: Win XP SP3 32 bit
VirtualBox: 4.2.10 (with extension pack)
Stuck at last step when I boot into Odin
Hi,
Thanks for the awesome guide. I'm on a Mac (10.7.5) using VirtualBox with Win7. I installed all the drives and Odin and VirtualBox has no trouble picking up my phone (GS3) when I plug in in BEFORE going to Odin mode.
Then I follow the last set of instructions (unplug USB, boot into Odin, plug phone back in) and then VirtualBox won't find the phone. Any ideas? I've Googled all over the place and haven't found anyone with this exact issue yet.
Wrong forum. Post in S3 Q&A/similar.

just my experience:
Mac os Mavericks, vmware, windows xp virtualized in vmware, last version of samsung kies installed inside the windows xp virtualized machine. install Odin3 3.10, put your phone in download mode, connect the usb cable and when operating system ask for connection with osx or vmware obviosly choose vmware, Odin3 recognize immediatly the phone and you can update everything you want. I have updated my bootloader e my CMW and after installed the rom "android revolution hd" without any problem
Method still works. macOS Big Sur host, Windows 10 guest.
You need to make sure you have VirtualBox Extension Pack installed, otherwise in VB USB settings you'll only see USB 1.1 controller.
May need to create different filters for connecting your phone in normal mode vs download/adb/whatever.
Also I didn't need any Samsung drivers (for my S10e Exynos). Everything "just worked".
I've got an Xperia U (st25i) unbranded firmware 6.0.B.3.184, but my Windows 7 x64 doesn't show adb device at all, I have a working mtp device (that looks like it cannot be disabled). Same device works fine in adb on linux, even passing the usb device to a vmware machine with linux.
I've tried with Xperia_P_Xperia_U_Xperia_sola_drivers.zip and install PC Companion, but the adb devices still does not show, if I force add the adb interface from inf, windows 7 says it cannot start, there is same problem on windows 7 x86. Windows xp x86 instead automatically installs mtd devices but prompts for the adb device drivers, so I can give him the drivers. Any clue?
Make sure PC is connected to internet then connect the device in fastboot mode. Win7 downloads and installs drivers automatically.

Had the Same issue. Just Google for win7 64bit and xda. Sorry i have no Link. But Problem solved easy

I don't need fastboot drivers, just adb to develop, I'm always connected, but adb interface does not show at all in device manager, I don't have unknown/failed devices in device manager

You have the "wrong" drivers installed. Use the drivers provided with c:\flashtool\drivers
-> then turn off internet on pc before connecting phone. <- prevents windoze from auto install via update

The only driver windows automatically install is the mtd (that doesn't need internet because is in win), I don't have the device VID_0FCE&PID_5171&MI_01 but only VID_0FCE&PID_5171
It's a bit strange a common developer should download a non sony tool to develop with a sony phone
I had a similar problem with my XS, I get around it by enabling 'install PC companion' in connectivity settings under 'xperia'. Then when you plug the phone in, on your phone select install. It should then appear both as an MTP device the PCC installation, just cancel that latter.
I've used the wrong thread title, it should be x64 not x86, I've just verified that windows 7 32bit downloads and installs the adb driver, I had similar problem with gt7500 on windows xp 64bit, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434319
I've solved modifying the inf file, I think I cannot change inf on windows 7 x64 because the driver becomes unsigned. Perhaps gt7500 works fine on windows 7
Heh... You stiill refuse to listen.
Install drivers provided with flashtool. Just doit and report back
mt27i
tested with internet disconnected and drivers pack in flashtool-0.9.1.0-windows.exe, same thing, windows shows only mtp device

Tell Me how Please....:crying:
I just solved this issue for my Xperia S.
Here are the steps:
1. Install driver on flashtool (I also install the pc companion)
1. On device manager, open the MTP device, and select reinstall device driver
2. Choose install the driver manually and list the compatible driver
3. It would only show one "USB Composite Device" for this device and install it
4. After the driver installed, the adb device just shows up!
Hello,
my laptop has the operating system GNU/Linux (Debian Testing) and I installed Windows XP Professional on VirtualBox. Virtualized XP recognizes USB devices mounted on the host. After, I installed the drivers for my smartphone Star S7589 and it is recognized by XP.
The problem begins with Flash Tools. When I want to start the process, after giving the button "Download" and I insert the phone without battery, then VirtualBox not recognize it and It doesn't start the installation of the ROM.
How could you recognize the phone connected to USB when it's turned off?
Thanks.

I had a very similar problem. Ubuntu 13.04, virtualbox and Windows Vista. My tablet could be recognized as a mass storage device but I could never get it into APX mode because it wouldn't recognize it.
I ended up finding flash tools for my tablet for Linux.
I would suggest you see if there are flashing tools that work on Linux instead.

Thank you for your advice.
I will look for Flash Tools for GNU\/Linux.
Hey, I have an Xperia Pro (MK16i) in my hands. It doesn't boot fully, it passes the splash screen, the boot animation and then it gets back to the splash screen and this keeps repeating. I checked whether it boots into Fastboot and flash mode and thankfully enough it does, except it isn't recognized by the PC. I have a Laptop with Win 8.1, Dual-booting with Ubuntu 13.04 and another laptop with Windows 7. I tried everything, drivers, editing the rules file but unfortunately, none of this helped. Also, I have this feeling that USB Debugging is off. It'd be great help if someone replied with any ideas.

Your problem is "bootloop". If you have Ubuntu installed on your PC,download Flashtool for Linux and flash stock ROM into your phone.U don't need drivers.

Flashtool doesn't detect the device.
So I got Xperia Ray, but it is simlocked to some carrier. I would like to unlock it's bootloader. As it is 11W37 it should be possible with s1tool.
But how to make this program work with Windows 8.1 (x64 if it's important)? Once per ten tries s1tool's window blinks and that's all I can get
Tried to start it as admin and as Win7 and Xp, but it didn't help...
Both OSes have all the drivers installed, except Zeus on Win 8.1 as it just installed it as some Qualcomm device, however as s1tool didn't work on this OS I just didn't bother with the drivers.
So I booted VMware and Windows XP SP3. There I was able to start s1tool and had no problems till app asked to PLEASE ATTACH TURNED OFF PHONE NOW. When I connected it with or without battery it wasn't recognised either as how (8.1) or as VMware XP...
So I'm stuck as I cannot launch s1tool on host and make guest to see turned off device
Any idea?
