[Q] s3 stucks at grey battery icon while charging! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

here's the problem!!!
I rarely use s3 while exams going on!!
last time I switched off it while it is on 4% or 5% of battery.. and thrown in to the bag
now I just took phone and tried to turn it on!!
phone wont boot up..considered charging makes some sense..just connected cable to the s3..a grey icon of battery occurs and shutdown..again tried by plugging off and on..nothing happens same grey battery icon and shutdown..read somewhere that holding power and menu button will startup the phone..its working but phone again switched off after booting up in about 2 sec..
do I consider replacing battery?? if that's the case..it gave me an average battery life of day before.
I don't know what to do??:crying::crying:
someone please suggest me what to do
thanx in advance!!!

anyone???

Hold on Vol-Down+Home+Power and see if you can boot into download mode.
If you do plug your phone and reflash stock firmware through Odin.

No problem. I suggest trying another battery. And this is the best scenario here...

thank you!! it helped me to figureout something..but still confusing
I replaced a battery of another s3..
it worked..the best thing is my battery worked on another s3..
but my phone is not charging even after replacing battery..i thought charging pin of s3 is reason for all confusion..but if its the reason..when my battery is completely down(yesterday) I plugged in charger and it shown me some grey icon of charging(if charging pin is not working it will not show up)..and again confusion started..
iam currently in india..phone is rooted using android revolution hd rom..my warranty is not expired still..am I eligible for warranty??can I claim warranty?? I thought its not related to software issue..so comes under warranty.
ok even if it doesnot comes under warranty?? can I go for service center for repair..will they repair it(of course by taking some extra bucks)?
thanks again!!

bro i think your charger is the problem

Have you tried plugging it to a computer via USB cable? If that does not work then maybe buy a new battery. Cos there's a flaw in some Samsung batteries. They die completely if they reach 0%. Hope it helps. Good luck

I would bet the charger. My S3 always go to 0% before charging and never had a prob...

You should...
a) Flash latest software from Samsung through Odin for your country
b) Root it through chainfire's autoroot
c) Install and use Triangle Away to reset counter
d) Perform full unroot through supersu
e) Check if you have official status in download mode
Then you should use your warranty. Probably problem is in your USB cable or USB port in your device. I suggest firstly trying with other cable and if it doesn't help do as I told you above (if possible of course) and send it to warranty with a note "does not charge".

this happened to me and it was just the power button being stuck...I had the exact same issues.... I have 4 batteries so the issue was clearly not battery related. All i did was smack the phone around a bit and boots fine now.

mine just freeze in batery icon when i try to charge off.... but he charge normal on. anyone have that issue?

Yes, Sanosuke, i have the same problem. I think it happened after trying to use triangle away on my i9305T. When turned off, phone will charge, but frozen at the battery screen (at 0%, screen wont dime, nor change to the current battery levels).
Anyones know how to revert the changes made by triangle away?
Thanks!

I'm having the same issue installed Gummy ROM 4.4.4 everything is flawless except charging the device while powered off shows a grey battery with a frozen white circle

Ahm is the problem solved? Im experiencing the same..i cnant boot up and hen when i plug it on the charger gray battery with a circle inside is the only thing showing up.. i dont know if i can boot it up to download mode or etc.. can u rply here [email protected]

Galaxy s2 charging port problem

For the last week now when ever I charge the phone and unplug it it is still showing as charging do I just need to factory reset the phone or is the phone in need of repair cheers
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
also when pulling battery and re inserting i get a yellow triangle with exclamation mark and a temp gage what does that mean ?
I have a similar problem.
No matter what charger I use, the phone randomly switches between charging and non-charging state.
Is this a problem with software or the port.
Just to clarify, I can hold the phone upside down, hanging from the charging cable, or wiggle the charger and it will continue to charge. The above error is just random. This leads me to believe it is a software or battery problem.
well after flashing back to o2 ke7 all is well again so must of been software related
Mine makes the plug and unplug sound randomly, sometimes it wakes me up at night and its not plugged in.

This happens to mine too. I'm on the stock unbranded firmware and haven't rooted our updated. This problem randomly appeared about a month ago.
I've just started seeing this problem now in the past few days.
When I unplug the charger, either the battery charging icon stays on, or the "Battery full, unplug charger" notification stays there.
The big problem is if I turn off the phone. After shutdown, the screen stays on showing two different icons (changes between them every few seconds). One icon is a battery half full or so, the other is an empty battery with a yellow triangle and a icon of a thermometer next to it.
When this happens, I can't turn on the phone. The only way I can turn on the phone when this happens is to plug in the charger, start up, then remove the charger again.
I'm on rooted KG2, XWKDD kernel. Bit worried about this, I'll try another ROM & kernel but I don't think it's software related?
It is discussed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132588
Summary:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15924419&postcount=13
Cleaning USB port and in some times bending USB PCB downwards solves the problem.

Galaxy s2 car mode and charging port issue - resolved
HI,
I have been facing this issue with my galaxy s2.(When i have created samsung account and install Darky ROM 2 - XXKH3 ROM)
Issue:
1)Activation of CARD mode - automatically.
2)Charging automatically- though charger is not connected
3)Enabling the voice mode - automatically.
4)Battery draining problem.
5)auto handsfree speaker enabling
Solution:
There are two solution for the above problems:
1)Assume its not related to hardware (My case), i have wipe all the data(Using Darky Rom 2 tool), problem seems to occur even then.
I have updated the ROM to XXKG3_ODEXED. - that totally solved the problem.
I m using my S2 now for a week...no issue.
2)Assume its related to Hardware issue, (in some case's), you can clean the charging port by using thinner( nail polish remover - easy to get and cheap).
First u have to remove the battery, (preferably in direct sun light), use cotton to soak thinner, apply it on inner side of the port. keep the phone as it is for 20 minutes.(30 would be great).
Insert the battery, power on the phone.....problem solved.
I have tested it on 2 S2's, one with software problem and one with hardware issue.
Hope that will help....

Hello, i had the similar error. I had to send the phone to Samsung. Let see what happens....
same problem here..100 % same issue...what to do...this is pathetic
Same problem here, just after a month of having the phone started the problems. The five problems darshangkolhe said, but also: auto power-on of the phone when I switch it off, and what it is more annoying, it is very difficult to get detected by Kies when it is plugged to the PC. Sometimes it only starts charging and others nothing, not even charging the phone.
I am very dissapointed with Samsung, I have paid 500€ for what was supposed to be one of the best phones, but just after a month of use it is going crazy!!
I am bringing it to the Samsung´s technical support this week.
Take a toothbrush and brush the Micro-USB port vigorously. Fixed.
Having the same problem, fixed doing the above. This phone was awesome. But it just looks so much like its a big rush job with all the bugs that were there. The screen coloring. Now the USB-port.
Meh.. wondering about that 5 phone..
Thanks prodygee, but I´ve already tried with a cotton bud with a bit of alcohol and no luck. I will try to get my phone fixed by the technical support or replaced.
I can not think about the 5 phone, I have spent 500€ not even 2 months ago, so for me another phone is not affordable.
I just want my Galaxy S2 to work as expected, it is not a low-cost mobile!
mine has been fine since, but today it has started doing it again so its booked in for repair at CPW,technician states he has all the parts so will do it while i wait

Did you flash any custom ROMs or is your phone completely stock?

First thing to do is to check the battery condition.
Put the phone on charge, then plug in the battery. Is there any heat as it charges?

You have no recovery mode to try a factory reset .
In which case you need a service centre .

so that's it i have to return the phone for the second time ..
and what is about the battery heat there is no heat does that mean the battery is dead or what

You might get lucky and its just a faulty battery or your phone might really be dead. Either way your all set as its under warranty...

[Q] Dead Galaxy S2

hey, about a week ago I flashed my galaxy s2 with Resurrection ROM,everything went great,I also wiped emmc in the recovery(before I knew about the hard brick bug)
anyways everything was fine, restored via titanium backup, after about an hour I wanted to restart my phone,so it turned off,but never turned on,it won't respond to charging, usb connections won't go to download mode nor recovery..just makes some heat (as it was turned on)
so I took it to a well known repair shop and told me he could revive it with a J-Tag
but I'am just worried :s
what could be the problem?
What could the problem be ? Without opening your phone up & having a look/testing how would we know ?
Sounds like something on the mainboard or the USB/charging circuitry might have died given it died suddenly & not while you were in the process of flashing something/similar, though if he's telling you it's fixable with JTAG then he obviously thinks it's a NAND issue.
Take it to another repairer & get 2nd opinion (or a 3rd, 4th, etc).

My phone dead too.. Was using NeatRomLite and there was no issue with it.. And today... *sniff sniff*.. in the middle of using the phone, it got stuck.. I pulled the battery.. gave it 2 min.. and tried to power it on.. nothin.. no download mode, no recovery, no charging indicators.. nothin.. it has as much functionality as a piece of rock now :crying:
Any updates on your S2's???
today i checked my phone and within an hour the battery had gone down from 70% to 30% and was hot reading 48 degrees celcius on widgetsoid monitor. i rebooted and it kept on draining till it got to 0 and turned off. once i got home and tried to charge through USB and A/C but nothing happens, the phone wont turn on or charge, blank screen. i saw it flash the battery charging icon for about a second but it went away straight away. about a month ago i was running cm9 and then flashed 4.0.4 to have a look at the differences but not long after flashed siyah kernel with odin and restored my cm9 cwm backup. i have been on cm9 and siyah kernel for a long time and thats what it had running today. ive had usb and a/c and misc charging current set to 600mA for quite a while as well, and when i charge the phone in my car it always gets a bit hot on the back.
is my phone dead from hardbrick or a problem with the usb charging circuit?
i have enquired about warranty where i bought it from and now waiting to hear back from them.

[Q] SGS2 won't turn on but shows charge symbol

Hi all
My phone was shutting off instantly without any reason for couple of days and then I would turn it on. My battery was also acting weird. Sometimes when I turn it on it was showing 30% battery while before it was at 70%. Today, it turned off and wouldn't turn on. I tried Vol Up/Down+HOME+Power button and Home+Power button but it wouldn't turn on or go into recovery/download mode. When I put it on charge, charge symbol shows for a second and then it would turn off and then again on and off and continues forever.
Any help in this regard would be highly appreciated.
Either your battery is not accepting charge or is not getting any charge.
If you know someone else with an S2, ask to borrow their battery to find out whether your phone will boot.
I've a suspicion that you're going to have to replace either the battery or the USB charger port.....or maybe even both.
But the first thing to find out is if the phone boots with a 'known good' battery.
my wife says I'm a phone geek....
I'd have to agree......

Thanks a lot buddy for your reply.
An hour ago I put the phone on charge for about 15 minutes and the battery charging symbol stabilized. Then I pressed Power button and phone booted and was working fine. Then just to check, I shut off and it won't start again and came back to the same old problem. I would definitely battery from same phone and will let you know about the updates.
Regards,
Its a very weird problem. I have put the battery of my brother's SGS2 in my phone and the problem is same. Then when I put my battery in my brother's mobile then that mobile shows the same problem. After switching batteries many time, my brother's SGS2 with its own battery would show the same problem. In other words that mobile was dead also. Then I plugged out the battery from the other mobile and left it out for some time and plugged in again and mobile was ok.
After that I didn't risk to switch batteries again. I have the feeling that problem is not at hardware end. For some reasons my mobile's software is corrupting batteries. I remember to have re-calibrated the battery couple of days ago with software named "battery recalibrate". I am lost at what the problem might be and what to do anymore.
Pls help.

Just for the record. I discovered the solution to be ridiculously simple. Battery pins connection was loose and by just putting a foiled tissue paper at below corner of battery to strengthen connection of pins, all was back to normal. Ahh! it was such a relief.
Happy days glad you sorted it:thumbup:

[Q] Xperia Ray not charging/ need to unroot to send for repair

Hi guys, i consider myself an intermediate around the android OS and i have tried most solutions that came to my head with no results.
My problem is the following:
My xperia ray is running stock rom ICS and is rooted. That's it
One day my battery suddenly drained to 0% and phone shut off.
Since then, i cannot charge it. Whenever i plugged it, the led blinks red /sometimes keep blinking/something always red/sometimes the phone boots after 10 seconds from entering the main page it will reboot.
I tried a different battery, the phone worked, so i bought another battery but the same happened, it suddenly went to 0% and not charging anymore.
Now I cannot access the phone via USB since it is not recognized and i can't work on it since there is no power,
What can i do to at least unroot it before sending it to warranty?
Try reflashing..

unlocked bootloader and rooted, or can you root without unlocking it? I actually forgot since the ray was always my secondary device.
Do you mean i rule out any hardware problem, this is related to software only ? Since my Pc cannot recognize the phone, it gives me usb device not recognized..
Might be a hardware problem..cant say for sure..

This might be a software issue..are you running on stock kernel ?

My phone isn't holding any charge, the battery is always 0, when charging it only gives red lights. Sometimes the phone will boot, it will show the xperia logo, go into the main lockscreen for 5 seconds then shuts off.
Buying a universal charger would mean waiting for 1 month for it to be delivered since i only found it on ebay

Was it damaged by water?
it's really easy to check if it was water damaged, open the back cover and look for a small WHITE rectangle, if you see a red rectangle it was water damaged, same with the battery it has a small white rectangle
IF NOT..see if SUS or PC companion recognises the phone..Repair your phone if it recognises.
IF NOT take out your phone battery for 15 seconds..put it back turn on the phone..and connect the charger but DO NOT SWITCH ON YOUR PHONE..let it charge for 5 HRS continuously..
IF NOT Try using another battery to turn your phone on...and see if it charges up..
Still NOT working?,Have you unlocked your boot loader ?

IF NOT take out your phone battery for 15 seconds..put it back turn on the phone..and connect the charger but DO NOT SWITCH ON YOUR PHONE..let it charge for 5 HRS continuously..
IF NOT Try using another battery to turn your phone on...and see if it charges up..
Still NOT working?,Have you unlocked your boot loader ?

Thank you for your suggestions, i did something in the meanwhile.
I have a co-worker who has the exact phone, so i put my battery in her phone and charged it. In the meantime, i used her battery inside my device and used flashtool to flash stock ICS.
My device had bootloader unlocked, i managed to lock it back.
Now after i have a clean ICS copy unrooted. I return my friends phone, put in my battery and put it on the charger, the phone recognizes the charger, it gives me the small flash logo on the battery icon but the battery meter is not charging.
I'm afraid it's going to stay on until the battery drains to 0 and then i'm back to square one.
At least now i'm unrooted and can check the sony service center if they could do anything.

The battery voltage is increasing or not ?
Do not trust the battery meter...The voltage reading will tell whether its working fine or not..
Close to 4200 mV is 100%
While 3400 mV is low battery less than 10% typically..
Hope i helped you..Just hit thanks instead of sayin..U know there is a button..

Well when it's plugged in, the lockscreen says charging. The battery icon has the flash sign on it. It is recognized by my Laptop. But the battery status is discharging and i monitored the voltage, it was decreasing.

Check if the port is clean and check the battery pins and pins on your phone.
Do you have the possibility to test another battery? So you can be sure it's not just your battery...
did you have try to let the smartphone shutdown by itselft? and charging the battery after that...
Sounding more and more like a hardware problem. If you have access to a voltmeter, turn your phone off, remove the battery and plug your phone in, check the voltage coming out of the battery terminals in the back. It should be ramping from 1 V to around 3.6 V (at least from the USB port, it might be higher from the wall charger).

thanks for the reply guys, I'm updating the thread so other people might benefit from reading it. I went to Sony service center. The technician first told me there was water damage, although i'm confident that the phone was never dropped in water. Also he showed me that the pins for the battery were bent.
He said he will inspect the motherboard, if it's not corroded (from water) he will replace the motherboard since it's still on warranty.
If it is corroded, he can't do anything.
The strange thing is that the phone is working 100% except i cannot charge it. USB function is working correctly.
PS: Always Unroot and re-lock your bootloader before sending to service, they will check for these and can refuse to serve you by the warranty.
