4.2.2 and wifi - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got the 4.2.2 leak to make my freezing go away, and so far it is working. But something works differently on wifi now. As I move around, it is constantly connecting to weak unsecured wifi networks, say from stores for example. It is very annoying because the networks often don't work, and they cause mobile data to turn off so I have to turn off wifi to be able to use internet. Then I get home and I have to remember to turn it back on.
Anyone else having problems with this? Is there a way to fix it? After fighting with the freezes for a long time, I really don't want to "rock the boat" and flash another ROM right now.
Thanks!

WiFi issue on my Hero...

Hello everybody!
Someone of you has noticed a poor WiFi reception on Hero?
I'm experiencing a poor WiFi reception in my house when Hero is connect to internet thru an access point.
What happen is that after WiFi connection has been established the phone tends to loose it and restart connection thru GSM/3G link.
That happen also if phone stay in the same place without moving around and also when phone is close to access point location.
Any idea about way to solve the problem?
Regards.

Just an upgrade on issue...
If I turn off data connection thru GSM/3G and switch on WiFi seem that WiFi connection is stable so maybe issue come when both data connection are enabled...
Anyway is annoying shout down each time data connection on GSM/3D and power on WiFi!
Regards.
i believe wifi goes idle when not in use. so it connect to 3g or edge. However there is an app if not various in the market already to help keep wifi always on..
Do a search for wifi and see for yourself.

Thanks for suggestion!
At now I've solved turning off GSM/3G data connection when I'm at home anyway I guess that WiFi reception sometimes go away due to issue of the phone or maybe as way to save battery...
when that happen phone stay unconnected so I guess that should be better if I will check for apps that keep WiFi connection always working!
Alex
when the device goes into standby, the wifi is turned off to save battery poweer, and it will go back to 3G.
go into the wifi settings, press menu and select advanced.
select the timeout options
set to never and it will not turn off when in standby.
problem solved and you shouldn't have to turn off Mobile data, although with the settings widget on your homescreen turning mobile data off off each time is hardly going to ruin your life. in fact i tend to do this anyway, just cos i have spent too many years with windows mobile....
Here's an annoying bug I've found tho - on TMob UK
If I send an MMS from home, wifi on, it sits there, and doesn't send the message. Until I turn off wifi and 3G kicks in again.
Now I know for a fact that on my Magic, it was able to turn on 3g/HSPDA to send the message all by itself. Might have a look in thodse advanced settings tho to see if there is something I can do.. Not a biggie, just a bit of an annoyance.

I too, have been doing a search on Forums all over Google looking for a resolution to this.
I have noticed if Wi-Fi is enabled I am unable to send or receive MMS messages.
It is an annoyance having to turn Wi-Fi off each time also I am never to know if someone has tried to send a message in the first place.
Currently using T-Mobile G2 (rooted with MCR Rom 2.8) on T-Mobile UK

[Q] Wifi tries to connect on wakeup even when wifi off is this a 'feature?'

When I deliberately turn off wifi cos there is none available I can use at work, on wake up my phone seems to always drop the 3G connection and attempt to connect to wifi, if there is a known one nearby it says connected to ' xxx hotspot' this happens when wifi is off and the connection doesnt actually get made, it then takes a while for 3G to come back on again, this is annoying as I dont have instant on data as it faffs around trying to connect to wifi when it is meant to be off.
I have a Stock phone, UK Vodafone on XXELLA version.
Is there a setting I have missed as this is starting to really annoy me now.
I wish I had kept my SGS2 as the freezing issues I keep getting and now this wifi make this a poor performing phone for the costs/specs..

[Q] Wifi and data on at the same time, limited internet.

Rooted stock ROM Verizon I605 running 4.1.2.
I was in Korea for the past 6 months and just got back the other day. Before I left, I never had any problems, but since returning, my wifi and data are on at the same time, and it's causing me problems. Here's what's going on:
If I just have mobile data on, everything works as it should. If I turn on Wifi, it will connect, but the data connection will also remain, and my internet speeds will become spotty. If I turn on mobile data and just try to use wifi, the Wifi icon appears (with the orange/green arrows indicating activity), but apps don't connect. Facebook automatically tells me "No Internet connection," Opera won't load pages, Google Talk can't sign in, etc. If I turn mobile data back on, things work again, albeit slowly.
The strange thing is if I turn on Airplane Mode and then turn it off, leaving data off, my wifi will work 100% normally. If I try to turn on mobile data again, I get the same issue.
While I was away, I replaced the SIM card so I could use my phone over there. I messed with some APN stuff thinking I would be able to get data on my phone in Korea, but that didn't work out so I returned my APN settings to default. I have a feeling that's the source of my problems, but I have no idea how to fix it. I tried restoring my APN settings to default through the settings, but that didn't fix it either.
Any help at all would be appreciated!
If it helps I have been seeing the same thing. I'm on CleanRom 3.5 (Verizon Rom base) and PB&J kernel. It seems to be hunting between them even when in strong wifi signal.
Interestingly enough it's not doing it right now.
I'll keep a closer eye on it now.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
In my case, it's a constant problem (unless I manually go into airplane mode, like explained). It doesn't work sometimes and not work other times.
I'm trying to use wifi at home, so signal strength isn't an issue either.

Wifi and Data connection switching problem. Please help!

This may seem like a minor issue, but it's driving me crazy.
I always set my Wifi to "Always on" on my devices, so that when I pick up my phone or tablet, it's connected and I don't need to wait for it to switch to Wifi and make a connection. This usually works great except on my HTC Desire. Something to do with HTC's connection manager stubbornly switches to the wireless data (3G/4G) connection even though I'm already on Wifi.
Basically what happens is this: I'm using my phone on Wifi, I put it to sleep, set it aside. I pick it up a second, a minute or hours later and turn it back on. It's still connected to Wifi, but then the connection manager toggles over to 3G for no reason at all. Then a few seconds later it flops back over to the Wifi connection.
Again, this may seem like a minor problem, but when I've told my phone to stay on Wifi, I'd like it to stay that way. Plus, the way it works, I'm usually already in an app by the time it toggles my connections, so I'm stuck sitting there and waiting while it does it's thing.
At one point I used Titanium Backup to freeze one of the connection managers that I found in the app list, but that didn't seem to stop it. Does anyone else know which app is doing this nonsense?
I'm on stock 4.2.2 (or whatever the phone came with). The phone is currently rooted.
Thanks a lot!

WiFi Reconnection issus

Anyone else having problems reconnecting to a WiFi connection, or even seeing WiFi SSIDs after disconnecting from WiFi?
This happens to me intermittently. I have 5 WiFi SSIDs in my house. 2.4G and 5G from the FIOS router, and the same from a WiFi access point on another floor at the other end of the house, and a Guest network from the AP. I can normally see all of them from any point in the house, as well as half a dozen from nearby neighbors. And my s9+ normally connects, automatically, to my primary 5G connection without any problem.
But occasionally, after being out and coming back home, or after the phone has been asleep for a while, it won' see any SSIDs. Not mine, or the neighbors. I've tried scanning for WiFi networks, turning WiFi off, waiting a few, and turning it back on, but it doesn't see anything, and won't connect. I've even tried manually inputting the name of one of my access points, but the phone won't find it.
Turn on WiFi automatically is on, WiFi power saving mode is off (although I've had the same issue with it turned on), Keep WiFi on during sleep was set to While charging. I've changed it to always, but it will be a while to see if that helps.
The only way I've found to get it to see WiFi networks again is to reboot the phone.
Oh, and other devices, including other Android phones, see all the SSIDs without issue.
Any thoughts or ideas?
I have te same issue here, I can't find a fix.
Mine will not connect to mobile date after I turn my wifi off. I have to reboot the phone in order to be able to make a call or use data. It all seemed to happen when a pop up came on to enable wifi calling. I can't figure out how to turn that off.
I don't have acupp1's issue with mobile data, but I seem to have resolved the WiFi connection issue by not letting the phone turn WiFi off during sleep. Haven't had the problem since I changed that setting.
I got the same problem since I rooted
Been trying to figure out if its a VENDOR Firmware problem or what. I do know that every developer says its a bug with the s9 when rooting. I've personally watch the live log on TWRP when flashing and seen where it mounts the VENDOR Firmware and then unmounted at the end. So it could possibly be a problem between TWRP and the s9 ROMs idk know exactly yet but I'm looking for a solution also. But I'm going to try what you did with your WiFi then report back here.
