Hey Guys if you read this article you will see that in the new OTA it will unlock LTE band 4.
So here is my question... Being MDK LOKI rooted will I be able to flash the modem and get the band 4 or will there be stuff in the kernel that we will need?
My real question is.. will we be able to use the new Band 4 eventually being rooted?
+1 for this question also. Being rooted on mdk with recovery I am getting close to letting go for 4.3 cause I have a gear watch that's doing nothing. I haven't needed any ROMs since my x and RAZR, so I could settle with root only but would b nice to keep most and reap the benefits without selling out my mdk framework. I'll grab beans or cm10 at that point. I know its a tough question without a sign of the ota yet
We just have to wait till some of the devs get a hold of the OTA and tear it apart.

For what it's worth, someone posted a link to the OTA file and I downloaded it. It looks like the modem file is done via a patch instead of the OTA including an actual flashable .bin file. I'm guessing someone will have to install the OTA and pull the modem file from the phone itself.
I came to ask this same question. For once, the stock rom has something I want that I can't get. It's usually the other way around. I'm sure the devs will have a flashable file to get LTE band 4 sometime soon. And that's why I love the android developer community!

Exactly. We need someone who took the ota and kept root before anything can be done.

Just flashed the zip from here in recovery and I now have MJ7. Doesn't look like AWS is enabled in the part of town I'm in, but I think it is in some parts of Atlanta. Even still being on band 13, my speeds have increased.

Sorry dude but unfortunately as of right now there is no Odin image to flash, so you're going to have to take it back to Verizon.

OOOO
I see. So accepting a verizon OTA unroots your phone and makes it so you can't put a custom bootloader on it anymore. That sucks. But if you never took the actual OTA then you are good to go with a bootloader is what you are basically sating?

yep, that's the way out. I had exaclty the same issue after trying to use CF-autoroot on stock MJ4 update. FYI after using odin to get TWRP back i also could not flash freeza's MJ4 as I had wiped system, data, davlik and cache also I had to restore a nandroid then factory reset in order to flash MJ4. One bug with freeza's MJ4 is your wifi passwords won't stick. However MI5 works fine with MJ4 firmware and does not have the wifi password issue. Probably more than you wanted to know but that's it in a nutshell.

I did but it screwed everything up. The baseband was still MJ4 but the build number was MI3 and I kept getting pen input errors and everything slowed down so much that it was pretty much not usable. I finally took it into another sprint store and was able to get it swapped out with a new one after adding insurance to it. This time I made sure not to upgrade yet to MJ4 to prevent screwing up my phone again. For some reason I was able to use both the MD5 and CSC files for MI3 to flash that in Odin but again it royally screwed it up.

Question about a firmware upgrade that is available. Now I just bought my Note 3 this past Wednesday and immediately got notification of a software update for the firmware. Knowing the issues taking a software update can sometimes cause, I haven't taken it. The phone is MI5. so should I not touch the update or what? I haven't rooted because I haven't had a chance, still figuring out the right steps and what, if anything, may be needed. Help with that would be welcomed as well.

Who said you can't have both?
If you were smart enough, you would have responded with URDLV to patch the ROM and root without KNOX and MobileODIN to further upgrade the ROM without changing the old bootloader (which doesn't have anything to do with bugs)
But no.

Admittedly I'm new to this, but from my research, can't you just flash an old kernel/version and then install whatever you want?
Wouldn't this method work? galaxys4root . com/galaxy-s4-root/how-to-root-verizon-galaxy-s4-sch-i545/
Basically put in ODIN mode and install an old image, then you can install the ROM you want, right?

Exactly.
If you are on a newer version of ROM, you cannot go back.
That is why, one should be very careful about taking an update.
Thanks for the info. Glad I didn't try that
When I got my device it was at least two versions back, so there's no way to factory reset my device to what I got when I first received my device?

It's relatively well documented that you cannot downgrade from MJ7. If I recall, it's not a hard brick. It's either a soft brick or the flash just fails.
I have faith that we'll have an answer to this soon. Devs never take long to find a workaround.

@Stolly08 what method did you use to Root? I'm still hesitant to try...had my VZ GS4 (running MJ7) for about 3 weeks now.
I'm basically trying to rid my device of bloatware (and praying to eventually flash custom ROMS whenever we all figure that out )
After having HTC phones for 5 years, all rooted, I said enough of the crappy battery life and decided to take the Samsung mainly because of the huge dev support and good battery life. Kinda bummed out we dont have root for MJ7 with unlocked boot loader but Im sure the Dev's are working hard to get it for us
Okay guys so I got my S4 for Christmas as an upgrade from an S3. I love it. Its a beast and it is just amazing. Here's my problem, after a bunch of head scratching and reading, I finally found out how I was supposed to root it while running the latest jail cell of an update, MK2. The only thing I did to my phone is root it. No custom recovery or anything. Now that the android 4.4.2 update is coming soon, I really want to update to it, but obviously I can't just take the OTA when it comes out, so I need to go back to stock, no root, nothing, the thing is I have no idea how to safely do it and I have very bad dyslexia so keeping track of all the threads that tell me what to do is impossible for me. Can someone please give me a simple step by step on how to do go back to stock? And where I can get the firmware from?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
My recommendation would be to search the Samsung website for an MK2 Odin.tar stock firmware image for your s4. If you can't find it there then I recommend looking on XDA for a no data wipe MK2 image. Once the OTA hits for 4.4.2 touchwiz KitKat I recommend you wait for the devs to find a root exploit for it. Or if you don't mind spending a few bucks you could buy super su pro and enable root survival mode and it keeps root over an ota. But I'll see if I can link you to a non data wipe stock MK2 image.

Please understand that currently there is no way to root KitKat on bootloader locked devices.
Yes, you can restore a no-wipe MK2 ROM and return to stock, then take the 4.4 update when it's rolled out, but you may be stuck on stock for good if you do that.

I rooted my stock s4 using saferoot then flashed a kitkat 4.4.2 rom. When the new rom booted up i had lost root. I have since maxed out my binary counter trying to get back to 4.3 mk2 i think? which is what my phone came with. Now im stuck with this rom i dont want, i cant seem to root it using saferoot or motochopper. All this and im getting the yellow triangle which i cant use triangle away on because i dont have root. I used odin to flash the roms, ive tried different ones that were 4.3 but odin keeps failing i think because of my binary counter. Is there a way to reset the counter without root??

Well since you flashed some version of 4.4.2 in Odin of course trying to put 4.3 back on won't work without jumping through some hoops. Check this thread out

Not having all your exact steps and what led you to hear doesn't help either. Try to be as detailed as possible.. Reading your post again I'm confused.. Is your phone working right now.. As In booting into Android or is it a brick??

I rooted my stock s4 using saferoot then flashed a kitkat 4.4.2 rom. When the new rom booted up i had lost root. I have since maxed out my binary counter trying to get back to 4.3 mk2 i think? which is what my phone came with. Now im stuck with this rom i dont want, i cant seem to root it using saferoot or motochopper. All this and im getting the yellow triangle which i cant use triangle away on because i dont have root. I used odin to flash the roms, ive tried 10 different ones that were 4.3 but odin keeps failing i think because of my binary counter. Is there to reset the counter without root??

There aren't any 4.4 roms that you can flash outside of a leaked one and you can only do that doing specific steps unless you had a mdk phone or a dev phone....not sure what you did bit sounds like you have messed up. .

Not to be a d***...but if people would read even one of the 50+ what not to do ops on here there wouldn't be 10+ per day people posting about how they f***** up their s4 and asking people who are trying to further development how to fix their new paperweight...also people who brick devices constantly due to not reading are the sole reason secured bootloaders exist...

My phone works fine now. here is my kernel and build info now, on the 4.4.2
Kernel: 3.4.0 [email protected]#1 tue mar 11 20:52:21 KST 2014
Build # KOT 49H.I545VRUFNC2
What i did was simply rooted using saferoot, then i used odin 3.07 to flash a kitkat rom for sch I545. Rebooted and when it came on I noticed i didnt have root access so i wanted to go back to stock. I downloaded a stock 4.3 and odin would fail at the FAIL AUTH part, thus bricking my phone. I then reflashed the 4.4.2 rom and it installed. Ive tried different 4.3 roms, even with a PIT file and it still fails. Like i said it works fine, i would just like to go back to stock 4.3. I think my main problem is that I cant seem to get rooted again and i dont know why. Thanks for helping a n00b!

Hey we weren't trying to be jerks.. Just give as many details as you can which led you To here and I'm sure one of us can help.
There's just a lot of people who come on here daily that if they read up a little more they wouldn't be in a tight spot.
If your phone is working fine on the NC2 build but you just rather MK2... then the first link I gave you is a method to downgrade I believe. Now I haven't done it myself but looking at it it's not for the faint of heart and you need to be good with Odin. Maybe start there and ask if in your situation it's even possible to do that .. I'm not 100% as to the steps needed

As I said...if you had read beforehand you would have know you can't fully revert to 4.3 after flashing that 4.4 image in odin
Update! 4.3 and rooted
I got some help and then i went HERE and now im back on 4.3 with a build of vruemk2. Im also rooted so i made progress. However according the the thread i followed, you have to use some bypasslkm file to get WIFI to work. WTF? i have no idea what im doing. I tried to follow the directions given, by using terminal emulator but i cant figure it out. I cant even find the data/local/tmp folder it says to put the bypasslkm into. Thats where im at now, but something has to be done because i NEED WIFI.

I wasn't sure if Surges downgrade method would work here... But I'm assuming since this user seems to have simply Odin the NC2 on his phone rather than the update to NC2 and have root method... That he's SOL for now.
Thanks for clearing it up

Surges method is meant to fix his situation I believe... But there are as always things that cannot be overwritten...he will be able to switch back to 4.3 but certain things from 4.4 are permanent and I think have caused some issues for those who reverted.
Forget it
Forget this crap, im just gonna sell it back on ebay and get another one.

Check swappa.com for an MDK base S4 if you want more freedom. They've come down on price quite a bit
