[Q] Quick question about unrooting please - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm a middle aged person struggling to get to grips with unrooting.
Situation is this
I want to return my phone to an unrooted state for a warranty repair.
I have only rooted the phone, but not flashed any ROMs
Do I just need to re-Flash the correct official firmware, for Vodafone UK, using Odin and then it will be unrooted?
And then use a jig to reset the counter?
Are there any other steps I need to take.
Thanks for your help

Yes, if you flash a stock rom that will unroot the phone, you could also flash just a stock kernel if you can get hold of one - search the usual haunts (Samfirmware/etc).
A jig will probably work only if you've been running Gingerbread stock roms, if you've been running ICS or JB stock roms, use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter before you unroot/flash another stock rom or kernel, then flash away.

Hi MistahBungle, huge thank you for this, just the pointers I needed. Very good of you to help some random bod on the Internet. I found the firmware I need and have installed Triangle away.
I'm all set really, going to do a bit more refreshing of my memory before I go for it. One thing am slightly curious about but will Google it, is if you reset the counter with Triangle away, and then I re-flashed the kernel with a stock, won't neck count as another flash, or is the flash counter only active if the phone is being rooted? No need to answer as long as it works
Thanks again for your help, much appreciated

No probs No, flashing stock won't trip the counter again. Good luck/post here again if you have any dramas.

Unroot, Back to Stock Kernel?

I have read through posts...just need straight easy answers though, at times I am stupid.
I have a non stock kernel and rooted SG2. Where is the stock kernel(one that won't have the ! mark at bootup) and how do I Odin flash back to stock safetly?
If I go back to stock kernel, will it keep the count of kernels I had on the phone still? Or there a way to reset that easily?
Thank you!
Entropy512 was kind enough to put together a package just for this purpose:

Your best bet is the *NEW* - Kernel + non-rooted system package option.

If you buy a jig, and use it to put the phone into download mode, that will both clear the flash counter and remove the warning triangle. And all while remaining on your custom rom.
If you want to return the phone, then flash back to stock with the package mentioned above, and then do a wipe/factory reset in stock 3e recovery. That will also reset your flash counter and remove the warning triangle.
If you want to keep the phone and run custom software but not show the warning on boot, that is quite possible.

[Q]Back to stock for warranty claim but how?

Hi all,
First of all i am really happy with my phone, and it is by miles the best phone i ever had.
But i have a few problems with my S3, e.g. a little crack (hairline) in the bezzel (without dropping) and when i call or receive a call it the sound quality is really bad. a crackling/buzzing sound. it is not kernel related or ROM related as far as I know, i tested it with stock kernel+stock rom, SiyahKernel S3 v1.3.8+ Omega v.8.1 and SiyahKernel+ stock rom.
Before i can send my phone back it has to be stock.
So my question is how can i get my S3 back to stock? so that they will accept my warranty claim, so stock kernel i guess but how..
Download "triangle away" app and reset your flash counter, unroot with "ginger unroot" from market, if you use supersu then unroot from within the app. Flash stock rom from samfirmware.com.
check your flash counter is at 0 and is says stock in download mode. Done
I will try that! thanks ;-)
It all worked
Well after trying it all worked. stock kernel+stock rom and flash counter 0. thanks again!:good:

CAN I Recover to stock WITHOUT USB ACCESS

So Im probably ging o get flamed for this......but here goes.
I have searched and searched, ive put bits and pieces together, but still missing components,
So for some reason MY phone is not recognized on ANY PC, My phone with charge, but not recognizable. Yes I installed samsung drivers, fooled with phon usb settings, tied rebooting phone, removing battery, flashing other roms, no luck.
Currently Running the most recent version of the following ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1676086
So to send my phone back to samsung(got them to agree to give me a free Galaxy S3), I need to do a full restore, however, I cannot find a way to flash to stock without Odin.
I have this theory, I want feed back to see if its possible.
1. Flash a stock ICS 4.0.3 ROM Back onto my phone via CWM\TWRP
2. Flash stock kernel
3. Reset flash counter
4. Push stock recovery though Terminal Emulator (heard this was possible but no experience)
5. Of course a full factory wipe\format.
Please if you think this can work and can help in any way please do.

If this is the link you are refering to, then please specifically point out the full sock recovery without using ODIN viaUSB cable.

If you have CWM you can flash a stock gb or ics rom and modem easily enough. That gets you 75% of your goal. I think you can flash 3e recovery too with CWM.
To unroot maybe flash an unrooted rom like the original ULF6 as your first step.
For warranty return several have mentioned they didn't unroot and were able to send in phone and didn't get any charges.
P.S. this topic was covered in a thread about two weeks ago. Perhaps a google search will locate it for you to get all the links and details.
I sent in a rooted note directly to samsung and they didnt charge me for it. All i did was factory data reset and flash the stock rom. Oh yeah and i reset my flash counter

The answer is no ...
You cannot fully recover to stock , unless you can find a factory GB or ICS rom, in a flashable form ..
But....for warranty purposes you don't need to ...
Just download a stock rooted rom to the device ...along with the flashable stock recovery and counter reset file.
It isn't perfect ...but close enough.
And try a few different roms ...as they may fix your connection issues.
I'm thinking you have a USB driver issue ....g
I didn't think you could either but take a look here.

They won't care. Its going into the pile to be reflashed, boxed and sold as a refurb. No sweat off their back.

Thanks for the help all, I Think its possible, will post results.
If you flash a stock rom then flash a stock recovery then delete all your apps, the only way they would know is to install a root check app, and I just don't think they would. Also, your rom and root habits didn't break the usb hardware.

[Q] 2.3.6 cant update to 4.0.4 because of flash counter?

I'm currently rooted on stock 2.3.6. I'm trying to sell the phone today and the guy wants me to update to ICS. I just have one problem... Whenever I flash back to stock everything, Kies keeps giving me the error that I'm not eligible. I assume it's because I tripped the flash counter going back to stock. How can I avoid this? Can I use Kies with a custom recovery installed to flash the flash counter wipe, and then it'll just remove the recovery?
Edit - Trying with a custom recovery and it said I was eligible.
I am no expert on here but lurk these forums, but I think I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I received a warranty replacement from ATT in the mail after the manager of the ATT repair center told his lackey to allow my warranty exchange. You see, I had mine rooted (on 2.3.6) and loaded with a custom rom (ICS 4.0.4) and the lackey could see the counter incremented and all. He gave me the script of not being able to warranty it due to the rooting but the manager could see that I knew what I was doing and that the issue (no sim error) was a hardware issue so he said he'd take the hit if it came back due to the flash counter. He had the lackey try to reflash it with official rom with their samsung tools just incase the sim issue could be fixed with a flash, but no cigar. All that did was leave me with an official ICS rom that was unrooted with a counter showing 1. A couple days later the replacement came in and I transferred all my info to the new phone.
Now just to be on the safe side, even though the manager of the corporate repair center ok'd it, I decided to return the defective Gnote back to stock unrooted condition with it's counter reset.
What I did was,
Flash the GB stock unrooted rom 2.3.6 using odin.
Then flashed CWM using odin.
Copied the ATT stock recovery zip and the flash counter reset zip to the internal memory. Reason being is that you will flash the counter reset with the custom CWM and then flash the stock recovery after to replace the CWM with the stock ATT recovery.
Afterwards I checked in download mode and the flash count was :no which means I'm in the clear and the underneath it said Samsung Official.
I haven't used kies, but I do know that using odin was painless. I'd suggest browse these forums for a while until you feel comfortable enough and then take care of the problem without Kies. Could be done in less than an hour after hitting a few links in the stickies of these forums.

Its got nothing to do with the flash counter. Unless your phone is completely stock, Kies rejects it.

It actually was the flash counter. I wiped the counter and then tried, rooted and with a custom recovery, and it worked. Stock with a 1 on the flash counter and nothing.

Q: Does anyone else never had a yellow triangle?

Hey guys, I'm curious if I'm the only one who never had the yellow triangle on his device?
I've flashed so many Rom, I've used Odin, CWM and mobile Odin but my flash counter never increased.
Please share your experience, thanks!
Tapatalked from my Galaxy SII
Yep, I have. It only happens to me when I flash a kernel on a stock rom. I use Triangle Away to get rid of it. You can find it on the google play store. There may be other cases where this happens, but this has been the only time for me, personally.
No what karpfenhai is wondering is if anyone else's flash counter is at 0 still after using a custom rom, if I interpret correctly.. Nope. My counter is at one after flashing Siyah via Odin. Subsequent flashes haven't done anything to it.
Karpfenhai, how did you root in the first place and what firmware were you on when you did? My (limited) understanding of PhilZ kernel is that if it's flashed from stock recovery on JB, root & CWM are installed without increasing the flash counter. Then as we all know, CWM / mobile odin can be used with no more increases to the flash counter. Is that similar to what you did? Or, did you root using a method which would ordinarily increase the flash counter and yours seems to be "broken"?

Thx for answering mate, back in May 2011 i was a rookie in terms of custom Rom... if I remember right I used a superoneclick method to root my pre-installed 2.3.4 Gb Rom (think it was xxki4). After going straight to villain Rom (2.3.6) with siyah and speedmod kernel, ics came out and I tried again several Rom until I sticked with ....litening Rom.... and speedmod kernel until jb appeared. After some weeks on lsj and it's successors I finally moved to cm10.1, tried dorimax and now cm stock kernel, I had around 100 flashes on my device and it's still at zero
I never upgraded my bootloader my phone never saw kies, maybe that's the trick.
And yes I maintenance many other phones including several s2 and all other have got the counter increased.
Regards.

Hahaha that's awesome! I doubt that would work now, as s2 has newer (& smarter) bootloader. Not that I mind my counter being off 0.
I've only been flashing for about 10 months now, so I'm not as good at all this as you. In saying that, I'd be well in the 50-75 zone for flashes I think, a lot of it is just to get a clean flash, or trying one of the various dorimanx releases.
On the other s2's that you have, is the counter at just 1, from the initial flash? As in, unaffected by other CWM flashes? Or is it quite high, meaning that subsequent flashes are still affecting the counter?
