I have rooted my phone:
1. You can block adds in apps with AdAway
2. You can make nandroid backups in cwm and backup apps + data with Titanium backup
3. You can increase volume with Volume+
4. You can wipe or freeze apps and widgets that you do not use.
5. Yoy can flash mods and themes for odexed roms
6. You can flash custom rom`s or kernels.
I you want to unroot use Triangle Away to reset the flashcounter , flash a stock rom and do a data/factory reset and your back to stock
And 7. You can use the Six axis app to wirelessly connect your PS3 control and therefore utilizing the usb out to connect via hdmi to play games on your big screen
Here's link for cf root,, it takes about 2 minutes if you are familiar with Odin,

There are many pages over the internet listing the pros/cons, so I wont relist them here.. The only thing I find most have missed out are the apps that are root protected.. If you use any that are it can become a pain, if not you don't really have much to lose...
if u use triangle away and restore your stock rom,.. your warranty is intact,...
damaging your phone depends on how you follow the given tutorials,...
also if I root and restoring to the factory settings warranty would be again available?

Yes .
Its pointless not rooting and joining XDA much like a eunuch in a harem .

OP
Google rooting and weigh the benefits. Decide for yourself if its something you want to do. Lots of average users will never need root. If you find yourself NOT being able to do tasks you want, then root.. if you don't have a need to or are questioning if you should, then don't.

Well then you ARE looking to root. Head over to the stickies in General or Q&A. There's a whole bunch of helpful info for guys new to android. Rooting be easy as pie. Check out the Dev section for root and recovery also.

You can always ask help to somebody, and you can follow all the detailed instructions and videos tutorial at galaxys3root.com (i think it's the best), they have also links to this forum for better instructions.
I made it few days ago, rooting and unrooting it's very easy, always make backup of the original ROM installed.
Pay attention also at what country phone you will be rooting.
I had an xperia x10 so was not familiar with Odin but it takes about 30 seconds couldn't be much easier

I'm more of a little girl that doesn't want to void my warranty and afraid of bricking since I'm a klutz at modifying. Unless you want to potentially unlock your phone's capabilities then feel free to do so however if you aren't a North American user than your phone would most likely be void of warranty because I've read an article here somewhere made by xda that rooting doesn't void your warranty (North American users only) and I'm a south east asian user lol. For experts they feel free to do so since it's their expertise but average people like me money is hard to come by and I don't want to risk bricking it lol.
You can't really brick it rooting. Its flashing firmwares and ROMs/Kernels that can potentially brick you.. but nowadays it doesn't happen all too often. And there are methods to safeguard this. JTAG is available too for the S3.
But patriotaki .. you can find info in the Q&A and general sub forums, and for all the tools in the dev section come with instructions. Here's chainfires root method. Just follow the steps and you'll be fine! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238

I'm rooted ut here is my take on it.
The only 2 reasons I rooted was because I wanted control over my CPU settings/create screen off profiles and to change the android green off my notification bar.
Other than that, the phone was sweet **** sweet before rooting. you can already uninstall/freeze apps without being rooted and the battery life was VERY good before as well. I have flashed 4 Roms and non of them perfromed as well as the stock kernel IMO. I flashed back to BEAN R2 because it has the stock kernel and gave me the best battery life. no theme, running my setcpu, nova, all notifcations and toggles turned off that dont need to be on and I get about 17 hours with 30%+ when I plug back in when I go to bed.
There are a lot of things you can do when you root, but this phone is very good without. I have had other phones in the past that just weren't up to par unless they were rooted and I dont find that to be the case here.

im on 4.1.1 and i have noticed that there seems to be an issue with this newer rom and rooting it.
I have read that the latest verizon rom does not work with the previous rooting guide.
I want to root my phone but dont know which guide to use.
Go into settings and go to about, software info. And look at the software number. If it is 1.15 you can root, but if it is 2.04 you can't.

shoot.. mainly wanted to root to do the free wifi tethering..

Last I heard unlock and root were coming along slowly and surely to the 2.04 update. Depends how long you can hold out, I suppose.
Hello.
I know what you are thinking.
Oh no, not another n00b bootloader thread.
Sorry, but sadly it is.
I'm on stock JB 10D MetroPCS MS 769 10d.
I was reading through the Internet, but I'm hard of eyesight and the strain is really starting to stress me. I've never had a phone that seemed harder to unlock(the bootloader). I see many threads and it is really tempting to get a newer rom that will save my battery and all of my troubles.
The only problem is, each tutorial I come across has lead me in a million different directions. Some are dated back from June of this year. I would like an updated method, and of course being the newbie I am, I don't want to try an old method and turn this phone into a paperweight.
I have researched that the T-Mobile ROMs will work on this monstrosity. I know about 2nd init, clockwork mod, have unlocked the bootloader on a tablet. Have been following DROID since Froyo.
I need a sure fire way to do this. I'm sure some of the new guys around here would like a sure fire method.
Let me just brief.
I am familiar with Clockwork mod recovery.
I know basic Terminal Emulator commands.
I run Linux
I know given the right instructions how to Unbrick
My device is currently rooted using the Chinese method, was able to properly install SuperSU and get rid of the Chinese version.
I am aware that the process somehow involves firmware with an inverted screen.
There are so many guides and tools, I've used LG Support tool before, and my final question is...
How the heck do I unlock the bootloader on an MS769 Optimus LG with stock L9 10D firmware?
And yes I've tried the search feature and just got even more confused.

.lAfter doing some research, I've got everything done up to flashing the 20B firmware this is the point of no return for me. The only thing I haven't done is ADB, but that comes with software mode right before the flash. I'd like to go over this with somebody to see if I have everything set correctly.
Also I need a good copy of the 10D and the European 20B kHz.
... And I'd love to be able to get my paws on the Metro radio... Just in case... For jellybean of course.

Unfortunately there is no simple way to unlock the bootloader, I also have the Metro PCS LGMS769 and managed to unlock the bootloader with a little trial and error and as of the time of this post im running PenberRom5.
Keep in mind that no matter how badly you might screw your phone up, as long as you have a pc and an internet connection you can always restore your phone back to factory settings using the LG Support Tool.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I had trouble with flashing kdz files so I had to go over the tutorials with a fine toothed comb, seems I did not have the small server in the right folder on the root of my C:/ drive. I got 10f flashed, that was my "safe" tester. As long as I can get into software update mode it should be no biggie.
Thanks to you guys as well. Couldn't have asked for better support than on XDA. When I am sure that my internet connection will be reliable, I'll go ahead and follow that guide.
Moving my apps to the SD Card would be really nice. This phone is not very well endowed as far as Internal Storage goes. lol
So yeah to repeat I got KDZ flash working, at least on the "municiple" laptop in the folks house lol. I know what I have to do.
First off, I'm dual booting this old piece of crap laptop I have, it barely runs Windows 7...but it works.

Thanks for that report, now we know that it wasn't the rooting method that killed Sound Enhancement.
Is it dead or only working with Walkman?
That is what I have noticed after moving to 136.
It only works with Walkman and does not apply to flac files any more so I ended up with all MP3s and using only Walkman as my player for now.
I stream music. Sliders work but there's no effect on sounds. I check apps running and it's not there. Anyone tried factory reset?

This, lol. I'm STILL on 4.2.2, firmware 532.
I refuse to update/upgrade until 4.4 Kitkat has been officially released, rooting is EASY and doesn't involve downgrading and causing headaches in doing so...
Current rooting methods take too long to do, it's a pain in the ass!
I did try 4.3 but found no noticeable differences and downgraded to 4.2 again.

I haven't tried factory reset, because I plan to root now after this & I don't want to re set up the phone, but I stream also. Tune in, Sirius xm, Google music, what I've been doing is dialing my voicemail during music playback to get the eq active / working. Although It doesn't stick a few records loud are better than nothing...

What is the current method of rooting .136 if your bootloaders locked, if any? I was reading about flashing .136 FW infused with root then installing SU from memory card, with locked bootloader, but I thought you needed your BL unlocked before one could flash anything on the ZU???

There is a way to root 136. However, it involves downgrading to firmware 532, rooting, flashing and so fourth. It's easier rooting using an unlocked bootloader, however, you still need to downgrade in order to root.

OT but i'll continue as it may need a little clarification...
If you root 532 and then unlock the bootloader you should never have to downgrade and root again, just wait a week or so for the next upgrade path to become stable in keeping root, but it will normally just be flash FTF, flash recovery, flash SuperSU and maybe a patched kernel (I think well will need another patched kernel for the 4.4 stock update - just a feeling)
If you root 532 and cant unlock the BL, you will have to wait for the devs to build a stock based ROM with SuperSU cooked in, and follow their instructions closely, but again you shouldn't ever have to downgrade and root again if you wait for the Stock ROMs to appear. It tock all of 3? days for the 136 update to have rooted ROMs on the forum
I had the same problem as the OP after the update. Only owned the phone a matter of hours then connected it to my PC to down load files and the Phablet updated then the problems started?
Not uncommon in the technology industry but non the less rather annoying.:crying:

So far only I have seen one person claiming that it works fine for him....I am waiting for the 6802 version of NUT rom to see if that gets me fully working again but not expecting much.
It's a bug, usually sound enhancement work with everything, this update only makes it wrk with Walkman, restarting phone sometimes makes it work again with everything but once u stop playing music it goes bck to being buggy as he'll.it's annoying.

I got sound enhancement working with 136 for FLAC and any other app. As I recalled I had other issues before when running non 6802 ROMS on my phone, I was still holding on to some hope that a 6802 based 136 ROM would be the one that will work...and IT DID!
I just flashed the 136 from the NUT thread and it is all working great.
