Google Edition RUU for S4 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi everyone. I'm new to Android and installing ROM's so please excuse me for the basic questions. I tried searching for an answer but could not decipher some of the terminology in these forums.
I currently have a Verizon S4 with the stock OS version 4.2.2. I was told by a friend who had a HTC One that I could flash my phone with a new type of Google Edition ROM called an RUU. Apparently this was just a dump of the stock android software off the Google Edition device and I could load it on my device without rooting the phone. I was also told this would be like a real Google Edition phone once I do this and I would be able to get updates from google to update to newer versions.
Is there such a thing for the Galaxy S4 or is that only possible for the HTC One? If so could you point me to the thread with the ROM for me to flash to this version where I can get updates directly on the device without having to reflash manually?

Your friend doesn't know squat about Samsung devices, or even the Verizon One.
(1) RUUs are HTC only. Samsung uses Odin images.
(2) You can't flash images for a GSM device like the S4/One Google Editions straight onto a Verizon (CDMA) device.
So what he suggests is impossible, and would be impossible even if you had the One.

Read up on safestrap, if your baseband ends in ME7 of course. That's your only option for flashing anything at this time. Go to settings, more, about phone, baseband to find out what you have. Please please read and read some more until your a Samsung expert.... It only takes a couple days and you'll be able to flash roms, the closest thing to what your friend is talking about is the Google gpe, do not take any updates from Verizon or kies, read about rooting and Odin. Lastly the above poster is right, turn on your video camera and beat him with your phone then make him watch the video over and over, it's pretty hard to brick your phone but what he's suggesting would have been bad mkay? If you need help hit us up and we'll make you an android expert.

if the phone prompts for an OTA update, it will logically be a newer version of Android.
If you want to root it anyway and install a custom ROM, I do not really see any reason in upgrading beforehand (I guess your S3 is running a Android version 4.1.2 already?). Hence go ahead, follow the rooting & flashing guides in the FAQ thread.

I ask because on my evo it could include firmware such as boot loader or radios. Logically it's smart to ask before assuming. After all what happens when we assume. But thanks. I finished backing up and rooting last night about 20 minutes after I posted

the 4.1.2 update does include a new bootloader, but you're already running 4.1.2

Some US versions of the S3 have separated their OTA updates into 2 types (one of which is "firmware"). I assume this is the same as you experienced on the Evo.
It is only some US carriers I have ever seen do this however. International versions don't separate them into 2 types. OTA update could be anything. At the most it is ROM, Kernel, Recovery, Radio and Bootloader that is updated.
The use of the word "firmware" annoys me to be honest. Firmware is more low level than the OS. It is embedded, which almost makes sense when you look at how the US carriers separate it out. Android to me is not "Firmware" but unfortunately, on the international forums here and from Samsung themselves, you will see them referring to Android as "Firmware", so if reading the GT-i9300 forum and you see someone say firmware, 9 times out of 10 they're referring to an Android update or ROM that may or May not include a bootloader etc..
I hope this clarifies a little

Google Edition ATT ??

Noticed that my phone did not take the OTA 4.3 update. I got to looking around and read some on converting HTC One to a Google Edition. Can someone help me understand the advantages of a GEdition phone as opposed to the ATT one? Too, is it a good ROM (I assume it will be a stock).
I'm really STUCK because I want to update my HTC One but I want to keep ROOT. I'm using Stock now, but I cannot seem to find a reliable ROM. Help help!
Thanks in advance!!

At first I really didn't like my ATT stock Sense ROM primarlily because of All that ATT crap-ware they had preinstalled.
I actually got Android 4.3 GE RUU for HTC one up and running....and...at first glance...it seemed really clean and nice! Didn't have any ATT stuff which was a big plus.
Hoping for a clean, stable, custom developer esque ROM........But I really am not a big superFan of Google for all my services...
(I use AdblockPlus on my MacbookAir, Windows XP Desktop at home, while checking my Yahoo email from my Mozilla Browser)
As of now, I ended up with Android_Revlotion HD-One_31.6 Stock ROM and have not changed for like almost a week from writing this feed.,
GPE is pure Android. If that's what you like, do it. I did it to one of my One's, and it was boring. I converted the other to the Developer Edition, and now I have Sense without all of the ATT goodness that they put on these phones. I really like it this way. Not hard to do either. You can get the Brightstar edition RUU from HTCDev. Then just make sure you either use BS__US001, or 11111111 as your CID, and relock bootloader. Since you are still on Hboot 1.44, I would certainly go S-Off before you do this, it makes it easier.
guys, so is it possible to transform my ATT HTC ONE to a GPE HTC ONE? Updates by google?

Yes, I did this and used it for about a month but I do like the sense features better.
1. Obtain S-OFF
2. Change CID to GOOGL001
3. Flash the Google Stock RUU which can be found on the XDA forums
4. Receive OTA updates.
If you need instructions to any of the steps above, google it.

I have a HTC One AT&T Version Unlocked. i am having some problem. help me please

I have a HTC One AT&T Version Unlocked. My sense version is 5.0 and android version is 4.3. How to update it? I have also haviong issues on activating WiFi hotspot, every time i am enabling that, an error would occur and it says that contach att.com/mywireless or call 611 what to do.?/ I have searched on google and found that, they adviced me to change my at&t phone into google play editio using bootloader process. Is it safe to do?? and if not is there any other process to do. the main thing i am in india now. help me please help me???
I had similar problems with my HTC One at&t version. However, there's a separate section for at&t htc one related issues, you can see there. Also, you might take a look into the links on my signature.
hmm
I have done that also i have posted on htc one forum also bit i dint get any reply there. I want to update its sense to 6.0 and android to 4.4.2 and also wanna usse the wifi hotspot what to do?
You can convert to Developer Edition. You will get Sense 6.0 update ota immediately. You can also flash the at&t sense 6.0 ota via stock recovery. For both the cases you will need s-off. You can follow the tutorial on my signature.
None of the stock roms have tethering unlocked without appropriate service plan, you will need to flash a developer build or international rom that have tethering unlocked.

Want to install ROM on HTC Verizon M8

Hi, I just bought a new HTC M8 Verizon version for my family. This is actually my first HTC.I am trying to use it as 4G GSM smart phone, but Verizon is using CDMA. So I figure that I need to install different version of ROM to enable that, plus I just want to try out different ROM.
After days of researching, I was finally able to UNLOCK, S OFF, rooted, and updated firmware to 4.4.3. But I am not able to install any new ROM to the phone. I am using TWRP loader, and my ROM can't pass the MD5 check, or the signature check. When I installed the ROM after the wiping, TWRP always told me that I didn't root my device and asking me to install SU Superuser. I did use Root checker to verify my root.
Please kindly provide me with some pointer. It has been fun doing the research, but the frustration has started to kick in.
Some Roms especially close to stock loose root or are not rooted so it's always best to keep ahold of SuperSU zip and place it in your sdcard.
Ultimately google just a bit more and you should find a Verizon forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/development
AT&T HTC ONE M8
Wrong section. This if specifically for the AT&T version.
You want to post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8
Verizon version doesn't use the same ROMs (although some are specifically designed to support multiple variants) and the hardware may even be different between the CDMA and other variants (its been debated). So any advice given by AT&T users may be harmful to your version.

I need your help please.

I'm new to this forum but any kind of help will be appreciated. I got an HTC One M8. I'm African and I found some AT&T apps on the phone. I'm guessing it's some sort of service provider in the West. I found out that my phone is stuck on Android KitKat. It doesn't upgrade or even find options to upgrade the OS. I tried finding some internet help. It might be the AT&T keeping it from finding the update. Is there anyway to still get the update officially as the phone has nice specs but is not compatible for some apps because of the OS.
I'm also open to the suggestion of rooting as that has recently been seeming like the only option I might have left. I'm not worried about warranty as my country is not one for giving warranties on anything. I'm only scared of bricking my phone.
So if you can I'd really appreciate if you can give me a step by step process of rooting my phone, unlocking bootloader, turning S-Off and installing a new OS. Suggestions of good custom ROMS will be accepted too.
Most US carrier branded M8 versions will only OTA update if connected to that US carrier (in this case, AT&T)
You can update using the RUU tool. See my Index thread, and look under the "RUUs": https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
Marshmallow is the last official software version, and that RUU number is 6.20.502.5
Thanks
Although, I have solved my problem. Ended up wiping the whole phone, OS, firmware and all. Luckily, I had a recovery tool. Reinstalled Skydragon RUU and some firmware from some other thread. Now it works fine. That's what I'm using to write this note.
Thanks for the reply tho
Good work sorting it out on your own. I know you are new to the forum. In the future, I'd suggest "closing the loop" on posts you've made (especially a new thread you started) by posting that you solved the problem (and how you did it, for the benefit of others).
Also, I know you made the post some time ago. I only responded yesterday, since I don't often check this (AT&T specific) section too often, due to low activity/traffic. There is more activity on the "generic" M8 thread (not carrier specific). So if you have further questions, I'd advise to post their in the future (and mention that you have the AT&T version M8): https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8
Although even that section is getting pretty quiet these days, due to the age of the device!

It was either a stock/official (HTC) RUU or the Skydragon ROM. There is not such thing as an RUU for a custom ROM (such as Skydragon.
