So now that 4.3 is available for Verizon I was curious if the typical tethering apps/widgets for us non-rooted folk still work? The tethering widget has been my go too and have become accustomed to just hitting the home button when getting the nag screen about needing to subscribe to the service. I read on the FoxFi app description on the playstore that it "does" support the 4.3 update for Verizon. Can anyone confirm if either of these work since the update?
Pdanet+ with full license got my tethering back.

I tried nolockscreen in hash field and it would not work. Is there an order in how you accomplished this?

nolockscreen works and the subscription status shows up so I press the home button to get rid of it (trick from 4.2.2) but the connection isn't seen on any of my computers or devices.

Tethering has been built in, with no need for additional software since the launch of the S3, and still works in the S4.

Yes if you subscribe to tethering through said provider. This wasn't the question I asked.

FoxFi definitely works but you need to set a PIN/Pattern on the device. If you do the nolockscreen option it doesn't start the connection.
Still on 4.2.2. It's weird that I don't get the nag screen at all if I tap on the wifi tether widget and I don't subscribe to the plan. It just works.

That is actually what I get plus you don't see the red hotspot symbol at the top. The blue foxfi icon is still showing though.
Meanwhile I guess I will use the lock screen method until we get root.
PDAnet and Easytether both work but obviously they USB-based tethering rather than Hotspot apps.
I finally figured out how to get framework-res.apk decompiled, my goodness I don't know if it was because were now on api 18, or because Im on linux but I got it decompiled im looking into the tether prospects now.
-P.S. if anyone else is having trouble with decompiling, let me know ill see if I can help

nolockscreen hash only if you want to avoid setting a PIN. But looks like that hash doesn't even work and you have a PIN anyways so no need for it.

Hey, I think I've worked out the mod for a tether unlock (usb, wifi hotspot, and bluetooth). If anyone wants to test let me know. I can make a flashable zip or a script that will rename the old framework, copy the new framework, rename the old framework to back, set the permissions on the framework and finally reboot. Let me know

The wireless works fine over 4g without running that script. I've had no wake lock issues. Are you in a 4G area?
Also, one of the current roms said to have the wired and wireless tether unlocked. I'll peek around and see if I can find which one it was.
EDIT: Here it is, it's MikRoms. See the first thing in the Changelog

Hotspot hack with usb tether working also
Reboot menu
3D Homescreen Display setting
Browser settings unlocked
Browser tabs unlimited
Native Sceenshot (power and home buttons)
Mms no compression and max mms 5mb (default)
Added hidden quicksettings
Removed GPS icon when not in use
Removed usb debugging icon
All bloatware removable in settings menu
Probably a few more things that we forgot.
Oh wow thanks! I am unsure how to get that working without flashing the Rom. Would I just crack open the Rom and pull an apk or is there another way to do it?

I honestly have no idea how you would do that. I know that if you wanted the hotspot, you could just pull the hacked hotspot apk out of the rom and roll with that....but I don't think that wired usb is tied into that app, and I'm not sure what hits that. My suggestion would be to flash the rom, and see how it goes. I've never had anything but good experience with any of aamikams roms.

I rooted my OTA VRUAME7 Verizon S4 but can't seem to get wifi tether to work. I've tried both of the newest Wifi Tether for Root (3.3 beta 2 and 3.4 experimental 1). Changing the device-profile to S4 doesn't help. It will start up and say "started with errors." Checking the log results in a "no log file" error.
I also hunted around with SQLite Editor trying to find an entitlement check, and came up empty (to use the built-in mobile hotspot).
Has anyone successfully figured out how to WiFi Tether on a rooted OTA VRUAME7?
Thanks in advance! :good: :good:
To add the hotspot toggle:
Download app => Click Me
Got to => Settings storage
Click => settings.db
Click => system
Search for "notification"
Highlight => notification_panel_active_app_list
Click the edit "pencil"
In the "value" section add "WiFiHotspot;" anywhere you like...
Restart phone
Note: Make sure your list ends with a semi-colon
If you see the warning screen, just hit home.

Could it be any easier? So the only danger here is exceeding your data limit?

OP please read
Hey guys/gals, here is a fix for the VZW GS4 that resolves the issue of WiFi hotspot tethering. In the latest update, you now get an errors message that checks for an active subscription and then gives you an error and turns off the hotspot. Here are 2 methods I found.
Method 1: Download any app that allows you to freeze/defrost packages. If you cannot find one or do not have one, download an app called System Tuner by 3c. You have to find a package called "SPG" (system package). Freeze this package and it will prevent the phone from checking for a subscription service. Run your non-factory hotspot app. It will crash and maybe freeze for the first time, and then exit, just reopen it and it should then work.
Method 2: Using System Tuner, find the package called "SPG" and click on it so that it becomes highlighted. Then click "Details" so that it brings up the info about the app. It should show a list of packages under the "Activites" section (near the bottom). Uncheck the box labeled "NewSPGActivity". After this, you can run your hotspot app and it should crash/freeze for the first run. After that, it should run smoothly.
I hope this works for you all. If you have any questions or issues, just reply to this thread. Don't forget to give me a thanks!
Note: Do not use the built-in wifi hotspot toggle switch, it will crash. Download an app from the market to toggle it.
Note: If you cannot access the settings by clicking on the Hotspot notification, do this: settings>more networks>mobile hotspot.
Note: I am running ME7 with 4.2.2 JellyBean and stock rom.

If you are trying to run the hotspot from the built it button, it will crash. Use an external app for your hotspot. I use "1-click tether" at the moment. I'm going to do some more looking right now.

FoxFi uses your data plan, so if you don't have unlimited data it will cost you a lot of money. The technique I'm using prevents the phone from checking if you have an active subscription or not. Also, FoxFi limits how long you can use it continuously if you don't purchase the pro version. I used to use FoxFi before i rooted my phone.
On VRUAME7 build hack is not required. Toggle the built-in Wifi hotspot on and as soon as the subscription check message comes up just press the home button and it will go in the background but you will be able to still use tethering.

IF you are correct, you still have to deal with the message every time you want to tether. Also, since you have to hit the home button, if you want to change your setting or anything then you have to go back into the app and deal with the message again. This just makes it easier. Your idea just avoids the issue, mine fixes it. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything. Have a good day!

Just a heads up, buddy. I flashed TWRP via Odin (from our root thread) and then flashed the Omega v1.2 ROM for the International S5 (there's a thread here for it, I can link you if need be). Hotspot works fine out of the box!

Correct. Once you hit your limit on the account they throttle you. I blow through 19GB average a month and the 5GB limit really upsets the Kid in the backseat when all she gets from Netflix on the iPad is <Buffering>
There was a fix with the S3 that avoided the throttle bottleneck.

First your phone needs to be rooted, and then you need to have ES File Explorer installed on your phone. You can use ES File Explorer to edit the file in the system folder.
1. Open ES File Explorer
2. Pull up the Menu for it (hold down the multitask button for that)
3. Tap on Tools
4. Turn on Root Explorer
5. Tap on Root Explorer on the left side and go to Mount R/W
6. Make sure all of the settings are set to RW, tap OK
7. At the top of ES File Explorer tap / that should take you to the root of the phone,
Now go to System, CSC, and open customer.xml
When you click on the file it opens it up in read only, you have to hit the menu in the top right corner to edit the file.
Be very careful and only change the things below. I would make a back up of the file and place it somewhere you know you can find it. What you are going to change is in bold.

Save the changes and reboot
Once you are restarted navigate to where the APN's are. System Settings, More Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names. Once you are there click on the top right corner and tap Reset to Default. That should update the APN, you can now go in and verify that under T-Mobile US LTE the APN protocol is now set to ipv4. If the change didn’t pull over you should be able to edit it and change it to ipv4;
These are the Wifi Tether Router Settings from the developer below. Make sure that your WiFi is turned on before you start the app.

Once you are restarted navigate to where the APN's are. System Settings, More Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names. Once you are there click on the top right corner and tap Reset to Default. That should update the APN, you can now go in and verify that under T-Mobile US LTE the APN protocol is now set to ipv4. If the change didn’t pull over you should be able to edit it and change it to ipv4;
These are the Wifi Tether Router Settings from the developer below. Make sure that your WiFi is turned on before you start the app.
For Samsung Galaxy S5 using this config

All this do is enable tether. Tmobile upsell page will pop up once you surf the web. So I returned the app for refund.

You need to install a User Agent add on so you can change it on your computer. I use it all day long on my laptop with out the up sale page popping up.
This is the one i use for Chrome - User-Agent Switcher for Chrome
–user-agent=”Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_3; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.16 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0 Safari/533.16”
anyone try tethering after kitkat update with foxfi? they constantly wartn you it can go away
thanks
xsalemx posted in the 4.4.2 update discussion thread (here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658480&page=31) that the update broke FoxFi.
I am on stock, unrooted MK2, and I have Unlimited Data. I am holding off on taking the OTA until there is a working tethering app for it.

Haven't heard anything concrete yet. I went ahead and rooted, and froze an SDM app. I cant afford to lose FoxFi. Hopefully this works.
Edit: Just saw on another Forum that the KitKat update will indeed negate FoxFi from working.
The release of FoxFi today now supports WiFi under KitKat on the Verzion Galaxy S4, if that's any help.

I can confirm that. Tested and working. Only thing is, you have to set up a pin/password lockscreen

I have found that if you have a backup way of getting in to your phone past the PIN, you can make the "mistake" of messing up your pin too many times, and use the backup method to remove it so you can "set it again". Do not set it, and you can keep the certificate with no PIN. Not sure if this works on KitKat, but it did on 4.3 Jelly Bean Build MK2.
As long as you don't have the option to wipe your phone if you try the PIN too many times, anyway. Hah common sense, but disclaimer none the less.
foxfi works!
Went all weekend with out wifi tethering....today there is a foxfi update, that makes it work. :laugh:
Edit:....I did not have to set a pin. It said to 'go to settings and manually turn on mobile hotspot with in 30 seconds'.
I didnt do it in time the 1st time and it didnt work. 2nd time it worked when I did it quickly....
Whenever I turn tethering on via Bluetooth (only working method atm) it switches my APN to EHRPD - Verizon Internet from LTE - Verizon Internet. Even if I manually switch it back to LTE it'll auto switch back to EHRPD. The problem is EHRPD is only connecting me to 3G and I really don't want to browse the internet with speeds of 0.50 MB/s.
Would it be safe to delete the EHRPD APN? or is there any other way of stopping it from switching?
No idea here. I have never looked at APN settings. Tethering via WiFi works fine for me.
FoxFi Lockscreen Fix!
I may have a solution to all this FoxFi Lockscreen issue...See my thread at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52376720&nocache=1
Hope this helps!
I uninstalled foxfi and removed the certificate. I can't change back to a pattern or swipe lockscreen. Here's what my choices are:
