[Q] 4.4 kit kat - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Do you think that this new OS will be available for the Samsung Note? Or is it time to upgrade to the Note 3?

At this rate the Note 1 is more likely to see it, the ROM scene on the Note 3 is still nonexistant other than customized stock TouchWiz stuff.

Not anytime soon....you prob have an upgrade coming before 4.4 happens. Unless one of the great Dev's brings it to the I717....

Which would be better for frequently flashing roms and which would head further in development of roms? I understand the galaxy s 3 has a locked bootloader, but will that stop people from developing? Also, when the galaxy s 4 comes out, will EVERYONE stop on the s 3 and go straight for the s 4? I feel like the nexus would keep going. One more thing, what's vanilla android?

How long before you leave? I would try to wait until the next nexus comes out (this is when I plan on getting a new phone).
Google realeases android and every company like htc samsung motorola and sony put their own skins on then like htc has htc sense , samsung has touchwiz , sony has timescape ! The stock vanilla android doesnt have any skin its the original android and the original android is always faster . As for developing and roms i would say go for the galaxy nexus cz its google's flagship device and will always be supported , the galaxy s3 will be supported too and it has more processing power the quad core exynos is the fastest cpu on android phones and the overclocked edition of mali 400 is so fast , but if u are interested in support and roms go for nexus ! What the heck they even ported CM10 jellybean to the outdated nexus one Hit the thanks button if i helped and let me know ur choice

I'm probably eaving within a few months. If the next nexus is out when I switch, I will get that. If it isn't, then I will most likely get the galaxy nexus. Thanks!:good:

S Pen and custom ROM

Sorry for the lame post, ie can you guys answer my personal question, but i am seriously considering getting the Note 2 when it comes out here in Canada. Thought i would ask you original Note users about custom ROM usability as it is a concern to me.
I am a galaxy nexus user and was hoping to get the next nexus, but since it is being made by LG i have my reservations. I also find myself considering a tablet, but then have to ask myself what i would do on a tablet that i don't already do on my phone, except of course on a larger scale. Which brings me into Phablet territory.
Coming from the nexus, and being the type of Android user who likes the vanilla OS, my concerns revolve around customization. Given that the S Pen functionality is so deeply implemented into the OS does this result in a lesser experience if a custom ROM is flashed? Say you choose to flash one of the new CM10 nightlies. Is it CM10 just like it is on all other phones/tablets, or does it retain the "stuff" that makes the Note what it is....unique?
Any feedback is appreciated, flaming not so much

I just got my note 2 weeks ago. I came from the incredible 2. I had cm 7, 9, and 10 on it. One of the first roms i flashed on my gnote was cm. To me i didn't notice alot of difference. I didn't keep it on long because i wanted the use of the pen. I did find a nice Rom with good features in a stock Rom (black star). Samsung is supposed to release jb for the gnote.so once that happens there will be more options. After that gnote 3 will be out and key lime pie

I was really wondering the same thing, I'm considering the note 2 but will hold off if the s pen functions can't be applied to custom roms. From reading around the forums it looks like the functions probably won't be able to be transferred to aosp roms. I think they're making progress on the note 1, but not all aosp roms have functionality and they still don't have full functionality. It looks like touchwiz roms are fine though, but then again I'm not a note user.
I suppose it would be a lot of extra work for the developer(s) who work on the ROM to integrate such functionality into a ROM for just one device. I'll have to wait and see it when it comes out. Since the Note 2 well be running JB out of the box, a simple root and removal of bloatwear might be all that is needed. I've def become a fan of Samsungs products since the nexus s though. I also have to admit that the look and overall specs of the LG Nexus 4 are pretty underwhelming. I might have to do something crazy, like wait for something else to come along :-S HTCs new 5" phone with 1080p screen might be the sweet spot for me as long as it has good development support. Can't beat HTCs build quality. My hopes for the Note 2 remain high though as i haven't read a negative review yet.

Yeah same here, for me its between the note 2 and the htc 1080p phone. There are some aosp roms with s pen support on the note 1 and it looks like the note 2 will become very popular so there's a good chance cm10 and other roms may have s pen support. The only thing that's keeping me from the note 2 is that samsung isn't releasing as much driver and chip info so developers may not want to or be able to do as much. In the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTRKL5E9Iak and in a few other threads, its said that cyanogenmod won't officially support the note 2 because of that.
I think the problem is that Samsung has not released the source to the pen but i am not 100% sure.

Makes me sad. Although, what really makes me sad is that i have to carefully weigh the decision of which phone to purchase based on how well it will be supported by private developer community. Weird isn't it? I buy a phone, and change it as soon as i take it out of the box. LG Nexus is sounding better now.

looks like if Samsung Note owners want to retain the full functionality of their S Pens, they must stick to stock roms

Hi, I just flash with Omega V9.1 custom rom + RedHill V1.0 kernel + Philz CWM 3.81 recovery on my Note 2 N7100.
Run smoothly with S Pen (auto pop up), multi-windows, swap ext2SD function.. SUPER SMOOTH...:good:
I'm using my spen without any problems on CM10. Gnote and memo beta work better than the Samsung spen app. The only thing missing are the spen genstures and shortcut for screen capture which I never used and there are dozens of screenshot apps.
Why do people act like the spen does not work outside stock?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
The SPen works fine on custom roms, it's the button features that are missing from (moat) 207 custom roms. Personally I prefer the original functionality that the SPen exhibits in touch wiz, so I'm running a stock(ish) rom.
So to answer your question, wait what was your question again?

Ok now that I've re-read your op my advice would be to get the note 2 over the lg nexus. Just look at the hardware specs, and you'll really enjoy the extra square footage once you get to know it.

[Q] Using an N7000 ROM as a basis for an i717 ROM

I know of an 7000 has ROM that does multi windows.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1981609
SInce I am not a programmer, can someone 'splain in simpleman words why that GN One phone can have a ROM that does multi-window and our phone can't?
Is there a way to convert that ROM to an i717 ROM and retain that capacity?
TIA
The answer to your question about why the N7000 Note has the multi window update, but the I717 Note does not, that it's because the first gets software directly from Samsung, while the second has to have the software from Samsung tested by the carriers first. The phones have different processors and internal components, so software from one can't be typically ported to another all that easily, especially if it something low level, like multi window framework.

it's possible since I have a ported multiwindow rom on my bell s3, we just don't have many devs left especially to tackle a large project like that

Custom rom that is closest to stock Samsung jelly bean?

I'm getting tired of waiting for Samsung/telus to release the jb update. What is the closest custom rom to the stock Samsung note 2 system? I want it to be like my gs2x and note 2 running stock Samsung jelly bean.

So you have a note 2? Sounds like you should be the one telling us which rom is closest if so!
I don't have a note 2 but played with one for a couple of hours. It wasn't rooted so it wasn't that exciting. The note 2 runs on touchwiz and there isn't a JB rom with touchwiz available for the original note yet! So nothing will compare in that sense. I'm using ParanoidKangDroid by JamieD. It's lot LOTS of features and xtra's to impress any note 2 holder in my opinion!! Check it out!

NO, I have a note 1, and I have a s2x that just got 4.1.2 update yesterday. I love jellybean. works great! I am looking for the closest rom to stock samsung jb for my note 1. with their software etc included.
Well your not going to find a JB rom with the "samsung" apps. Like S note, or anything like that for the original note yet. We won't see those until we get an official JB release.
I'm currently on JB ver 4.2.2 and love it! You can find 3rd party apps similar to S note and whatnot. Every custom JB rom on here is different in its own way. Some have stylus gestures, some don't. Some have cool hybrid features where others do not. You have to read what's included into the rom and pick what you like. It's a personal preference. I personally try them all!! Currently my favorite is paranoidkangdroid like I mentioned previously. Try it out!

You can try this one it has the TW launcher on 4.2.2 but it does not run all the Samsung Apps as it is really just a skinned CM 10.1.

Just wondering does the tethering work on this jelly bean rom?
You could always install stock CM10.1 then use one of the .Zip files from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236937 to add Touchwiz launcher and widgets, the second post down adds a few Samsung apps but nothing specific to the Note just stuff like samsung file manager, app store and sounds from the Galaxy S4. it's what i'm using along side a Touchwiz CM10.1 theme from the play store.

New Touchwiz

I bought my wife the S4 today and I love the new touchwiz - I know some ppl are porting certain features of it to to the note 2 etc... but what other options are there? I know you probably can't just load the odin from the s4 to the gnote2 right? lol im sure that would brick it? Any other ideas to get the new features? I know there are also many hardware differences too which would be a limiting factor........
Samsung is bringing S4 functions to the S3 so I can imagine they will bring them to the note 2.
