Tmobile LTE Dropbox download SLOW AS BALLS - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

Anyone else having this problem? Some files, ranging from about 30mb-50mb take forever to download on tmo lte when downloading from dropbox using dropbox app. I've tried switching to HSDPA and still nothing. When I say slow, I mean, SLOOOOWWWWW... like 1 kb/s, if that. And after I wait 20 mins for it while it's downloading, it will just error out and download will crash. WTF.

Run a speed test. If network speeds are good then you have ruled out your device and T-Mobile network.
If i had to guess based on what info you have given id say its DropBox sending the files slow or network congestion between you and dropbox.

I'm having the same issue. Dropbox downloads start at high speed but within a few megabytes the data rate drops to practically nothing and it finally errors out. I tried three times to download a 19 MB file through the Dropbox app and only made it about halfway each time before the download failed. I'm almost positive it has the same root cause as the throttling a bunch of people are experiencing with video streaming and large file downloads. There's a big discussion going on about it on Howard Forums:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1814258-Video-Streaming-being-throttled
Strangely enough, I was able to download about 2.5GB of data from Dropbox onto my new PC through tethering before the 4.3 update broke my tethering app. It took about six hours, but it did get all the files.

Do one of you have time to run a test?
DL a large file using TMO, then delete the file and DL it again using WiFi.
Run each 3 times just to be sure.
If TMO is throttling DropBox it will be very evident.

if true, i hardly consider 15mb a large file.
Im also downloading a game right now on LTE and the speed keeps going up from 2kb - 1.5mb/sec. It fluctuates the entire time. Like a rollercoster.
wtf is this crap??!
Watching youtube videos also buffers a lot too. wtf. tmobile, why am I paying an extra $20 for unlimited LTE only to have it perform like crap on things that actually matter??!

[Q] Is anybody else downloading apps very slowly from the Market?

I thought it was a wifi issue, but I realized that I'm capped at the exact same speeds no matter what type of data connection I'm using. I can't go above around 200-250 kb/s no matter what. But this problem ONLY happens with downloading apps from the Market. Everything else loads quickly. My Captivate does not have this issue at all.
What would cause such a unique problem? My Atrix has a capped download speed ONLY from downloading Market apps.
It's called "throttling" they do it to keep their system stable. If they didn't then market would be even slower because everyone would be eating way more bandwidth. So just a guess here but they prolly think 250kb/s is fine because most apps are like 1-4 megs so your talking 4-16 sec to download an app? Which I find reasonable but to each their own.
*edit*
Coming from a cappy like you I really don't notice a DL speed diff, but I've never really paid attention either.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I mean, I didn't really do it with a stopwatch, but it's very slow.
And my Captivate, when connected to my FIOS router, downloads at around 2.5-3 MB/s. Angry Birds, a 16 mb app, downloads within 6-7 seconds. And its 3G download speeds aren't throttled on the market, either.
So, why is only the Atrix being throttled?
FWIW, I'm in Canada, apps download FAST from the market - coming from N1, it's faster from download to install.
Could it just be AT&T then? Like, if the market detects that you're on the Atrix in the US on AT&T, it throttles your speeds?
Or is it some kind of software glitch or something?
dammit

What kind of speeds are you seeing for upload and downloads? Use speedtest.net to test your speeds.
I'm getting 2.0Mb/s download and 0.33Mb/s upload speeds with Fido out here in Victoria.
I dont have an atrix so i cant really try this out but anyone in the US who is rooted download an app called marketenabler and change the sim code to either t-mo or rodgers and see if that will un-throttle the download speeds

There would be no reason for Google Market to throttle speed based on provider

I *am* just outside Toronto though. I know if I'm in downtown I can usually get much faster results, I'll be running it on Thursday to confirm

i know google wouldnt do it but at&t might. if they can edit the market to display an "at&t market" when connected to an at&t tower then they could very well hardcode it in the market to throttle speeds when on the at&t network
No, wait... this goes further than that... I turned on Airplane mode and connected to the regular, non-AT&T market. And I STILL get these throttled speeds.
I have a full-body case on mine... Can somebody try taking out their SIM card, then using wifi to download a big app from the market like Angry Birds?
...well, this is weird. I'm in New Jersey.
Somebody told me they've got an Atrix in Virginia and don't have any problems with download speeds from the market.
But there's no way it's LOCATION based... right? I mean, that would be the most ridiculous thing possible, right?
I just did a stopwatch test with my Atrix and Captivate.
Angry Birds Lite Beta
11.44 MB app
Both are on the same Wifi connection, and are physically less than 4 feet away from the router.
Atrix: 82 seconds (143 kilobytes per second)
Captivate: 7 seconds (1,673 kilobytes per second)
There is absolutely something wrong with the Atrix here.
Defective unit....

Wow, that's not right. I get excellent download rates with my Atrix on Wifi, equal to and better than your example with the Captivate. I'd be heading back to the store for a replacement if I were you. It has to be that particular phone because I never have problems like that, sorry.
Downloaded Slice It (6+ MB) on the Nexus One in 5 seconds flat. Atrix needed almost a minute.
Using in Germany on a non at&t sim so there cannot be anything related to them, I guess?
I am also having very poor download speeds via Wifi and 3g. I have a very fast fios connection and i'm only downloading at 300kbps which is pathetic. I am returning this thing, hopefully the replacement will work better!!!
Alright, after checking with a bunch of people who do and don't have the problem, it seems there were a bunch of defective ones from late December until around January 4.
Anybody who did not have a problem had a manufacture date after January 4.
Looks like that's our answer. Our phones are defective. :\
How do you determine your manufacture date?

So your download speeds are in general low or only in the market?
ONLY downloading apps from the market. Absolutely nothing else is affected.
But downloading apps from the market on 3G, 4G or any Wifi network is always no faster than around 200 kb/s. Usually 150 kb/s.
I went to exchange my phone today. I checked the manufactured date on the phone in the store. 1/11/2011. So I figured it'd be fine, with a newer manufactured date on the phone.
It was defective. Damn it.
So I'm basically playing roulette each time I exchange the phone.

3G Speeds, Slower than even Edge?

Ok, so I am convert from AT&T and my iPhone 3gs - One of the first apps I like to run is Speed Test so I can gauge what I should be getting - and on my iPhone I used to get 1300 or so K download, and 175 up.
I have run speedtest a few times today and in 10 tests I pull an average of70kbps download and 283up .... Someone please tell me this isnt normal .... Granted that we have a very cloudy day with rain here in Buffalo, but I cant imagine this is even close to what I should get in DL speeds?
in my office building i only get "yellow" for service and right now im getting 585 dl and 61 ul. outside is even better
4g i get 6703 dl and 1430 ul
much better than the 4g in here btw. i don't think i broke 2000 dl inside here, and my status never went above the grey color
Yeah, something isnt right here - I hate to say it, but I may have to call support....
Is the network really congested in your area? I get speeds like that at Tigers games.

Update your PRL. 01120 Should be good. If you don't get 01120, try updating it like 6 times in a row. Oddly enough, its how I got on 01120, which someone who's confused about who-the-man is, says it's biz only PRL. I'm not biz though, I was just sittin here and kept hitting update and it changed to it. Not sure if there's something in the system that allows it to happen or what.
With 4/6 bars on EVDO I'll get ~1500 down and ~800 up
WiMax 1/3 bars 4500 down and 1400 up (1400 is highest upload pretty much)
WiMax 2/3 = 7000 down
and 3/3 tethered = 13000
I stopped at the store and they said it more than likely all the activations, man where they packed, 3D phones going left and right (and some other models).
Also did the PRL update, didnt seem to fix anything ... Ill give them until Next week for these speed issues.

well coming from at&t 3g to sprint 3g is a 50% reduction in speed on paper. cdma is capped at 3.1mbps while gsm is at 7.2. one reason id switch to a more capable technology were it not for the data caps. but you are right, sprints 3g speeds need to be faster. i for one am dissatisfied with sprints 3g.

I've had 2.4Mb down and 1.1 up on EVDOA. Sadly only recently has the WiMax u/l been lifted to 1.5. 2.4Mb down on a cell phone is quite a bit. Granted it's more in the 1 - 1.5Mb range on average, what do you do besides youtube that you'd need more than that? Tethering? Most websites take longer for the phones to process than it does to download the actual content.
Well, I honestly cannot even stream music with the 60k Im getting. It skips alot.... I also used to do Netflix in my car for lunch (Connected to my LCD Screen). Im not looking for 2Mb or anything close, but I would expect anything around 700kbs to 1.2Mbs or so..

me too...me too.
I had the same issue since Wednesday, couldn't get over 120kbps on 3G. Sprint had me redo the activation and it fixed my issues.
You'll need access to the data programming menu, so you have to have your MSL code. Type ##3282# in the dialer, then use your MSL as the password. Go to the data menu and then hit the menu key and click Restore. It'll re-run the activation, update PRL, then update firmware.
Hope it works for others.
3G speeds
I am also getting terrible 3G speeds. Highest I've seen thus far is 130kbps. I had the phone reactivated, restored the data profile and still no luck. I went into the Sprint retail location and they did say that since there has been so many activations and bandwidth usage today, the 3G speeds have been extremely slow. I am expecting these data speeds to rise within the next day or two otherwise its going back...

I am posting from Centreville, VA (Fairfax, Northern Virginia area) and I will add that my 3G speeds are horrid.
With full bars the Spider Man game stopped at like 15% download progress and kept failing....I certainly hope this is because of activations or else I will be going back to my Samsung Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile where I get 4G signal everywhere I go....unlike Sprint.
Sprint isnt exactly known for its fast data speeds. You guys are more than likely in an area with slower speeds, like myself.
I highly doubt that the data speeds are as slow as they have been within the past 24 hours. If that was the case, no one would have sprint....I am confident it will pick up.
I am also getting really slow speeds. This is my first time with Sprint, so I'm not sure if this is the norm.
Anyone, previously on Sprint, noticing slower speeds after getting 3vo?

I went to the Sprint store where I bought the phone and I was told phone data is not like Comcast, and that it can be spotty and sometimes give you 3kbps because it is not Comcast, and I'm welcomed to return the phone if I'd like.

[Q] straight talk alternative?

I had OK speeds for the first three weeks. For 10 days now the fastest test is 100k down but 1000k up. I'm almost certain the account is throttled since it tests this way everywhere in a 2 state area, PA and MD. Checked the APN and nothing has changed. Their tech person told me that there is not enough room in my phone for faster speeds. So I have to delete memory to make room? I was very interested in finding out about this but it went nowhere.
The account just started a new month so even if I went a little over 5GB last month the counter should have reset a few days ago.
HI,
I was having trouble with speedtest.net test speeds, originally I had
good speeds, then very poor speed test results. Usually speedtest.net
app would fail to complete on the download test.
Someone suggested deleting the proxy from the APN. This seemed to solve
the problem. I suspect they are blocking the speedtest.net application
sites via the proxy. I also noticed very very different speeds on different
speedtest sites - even ones about the same distance away. Not sure
if it is phone network or other causes.
In addition, I was always able to have reasonable functionality from the
data connection that didn't seem to reflect the poor speedtest results.
Hope this helps,
Peter

Thanks for the reply. My real world downloads are under 100k I just spent 3 hours getting a small file from a trusted provider at a steady 15K. I can open up 30 extra pipe lines but it does nothing. Latest ICS leak (3.14.605.10 710RD) S-ON -- slower 4g speeds!

Hey all,
So i've noticed that after flashing to this new leak from stock GB firmware, my 4g data speeds have dropped significantly. Originally after purchasing this phone i was able to achieve 30mbps consistently. Not too long after i flashed the ICS sandwich leak, just couldn't wait for Verizon! now my 4g speeds don't seem to get over 12mbps very often. The same has happened to my upload speeds but i couldn't tell you the numbers without verifying. My question is has anyone else seen this same situation?? I unfortunately cannot be sure this has been caused by the new ICS radios because a lot was changed in between my test times. Besides the ruu flash, many apps were installed, bloatware was frozen with TB, and a extended battery used. I was hoping to find an answer on here before factory restoring my phone to see if an app caused this, or possibly it is a SIM card issue. I contacted verizon (leaving out a few details on what i had done of course) and they were unable to tell me much besides anything over 10mbps was good speed. Any help with getting my data back to 30mbps would be aprreciated!

You were getting 30Mb/s?!?!? How the heck did you ever get that? Out of tens of thousand of speed tests on Speedtest.net marked "Verizon 4G LTE" less than 50 tests in total even break the 20mbps barrier with the average being about 14Mb/s. In the few rare areas I can actually get 4G around here if I can get 10Mb/s I feel very lucky, and even on Wireless-N in my office, standing right next to a rarely used HP Procurve AP fed via Gig-E directly from our head end router with a 100Mb/s fiber direct connection, I can barely get around 30Mb/s then!

I was completely unaware of that. Where do you find this data on the speedtest site? I believe i have seen many people with even greater speeds then me, but i was able to get that on whatever the stock GB firmware and radios shipped with the phone. That was a typical speed pretty much anywhere i was and even when my service was poor (2 or 3 bars), and i can say for the short time i've lost 4g on this phone it was only for a brief period and that was in what pretty much could be considered a bunker (even then i had full 3g service)
. So i guess i am just lucky in a lighter area than you?? But either way i'd like to get back to that speed!
I've pulled close to 40Mb/s in areas around me so it's more then possible... And that was on the latest firmware.
If you're s-off, you can revert back, just take a look at the firmware thread with ICS and GB firmware combos in the Development section. Until you s-off you're stuck with what you have.

No over 4G
Speed test results can vary depending on the time of day. If I run a test between 6am and 10pm I average 15-20mbps But if I run a test at 2AM I can hit 45-55mbps.(same average results on GB or ICS Firmware) Just sharing what I have learned and that is speeds will depend on the local network load. The more people using it the slower. The less people using it the faster. (Can anybody truly tell a difference after 15 to 20 mbps? I can't.) So I don't think its the phone or firmware. I also think it's just timing and also the degrade in speed is probably cause people are upgrading to 4G phones wich in turn loads the network taking away bandwith that was previously available. But if you get back to GB Firmware and speeds comeback up, let me know. I would be very curious to find out why and would crack open the radios to see what changed.
When I first got my Rezound in January, I got 28M down/14M up consistently all day long. When I did the OTA update it immediately dropped down to 5-10M down/5M up. That's it. I've tried every newer set of radio/firmware files and it doesnt get better at all.

Really? That's weird. I've always had mine between 8-12 except when I got into big cities it seems to be between 15-30 mbps with the new leak.

Does Verizon tell you if you're throttled?

Just curious... My speeds aren't what they should be. I can't even get through a HD video on YouTube without massive buffering.
I think total me and my wife used about 15-20GBs of data last month.
3G or LTE? As far as I know, they aren't legally allowed to throttle LTE.
Run a speed test. It should be about 3-5 mbits/sec if your throttled on lte.
A good lte speed is about 15-50

If you can, swap sim cards with someone who has lte and definitely hasn't been throttled.. Then run the test again

Ok, so ran some tests, speeds are ok. But downloading from the market and watching HD in the YouTube are not good. Market downloads crawl along and YouTube constantly buffer. Any ideas?
Sense 3.6 ROM...
I wonder. What might your signal strength be at the time you are trying to use data? I'm not talking about what it says in the signal strength indicator in the status bar but in the settings rather.
Got four bars..
First number is teetering in the mid to high 90s, second number stays a steady 8. I'm on a global ROM.
Your sppeds can depend on your area. I know where I live I can have 4 bars and be from 3 to 10 Mbps. Now if I go in to town I can get 15 to 20. Then if I go to my uncles place in the middle of no where I get 20 to 35. Just because you have 4g doesn't mean you are going to download at those speeds with play store. It depends on their servers and how congested their servers are. I have been on WiFi that had killer speeds and it still downloaded at the same speeds. Verizon doesn't throttle by your sim card but by tower location. If a tower get a lot of congestion they will cut the speeds of everyone so everyone can use the data. Once the congestion goes away they put the speeds back.
With that said I have heard people talk about when they check their account there is something on their account that means they are the top 5 percent and are throttled. I use from 50 to 75 gigs a month and never seen this throttling.

Absolutely what Jedi said. According to the signal strength I asked you to provide, everything seems in order. What I would do now if you are still concerned is just contact VZW about the issue and see if something may be going on in your area.
This happened to me before when I lived 30 miles out into the country, I had to contact VZW because my phone was getting slow speeds even though the signal seemed ok. They ran some tests and such and finally contacted me back informing me indeed a recent storm had caused the box on the nearest tower to be struck by lightning. They sent out crews and within a few hours my area was restored to full strength again. This may not be your case, but it might be worth it because VSW told me if I had not contacted them, they would not have known for a long time. Just a thought.
I'll have to call then. Just ran speed test, got 22mbp/s. Updated some apps. Download speed crawled. Turned ny home Wi-Fi on, speeds starting flying. Something is definitely wrong...
I don't know about you guys but I wouldn't use YouTube as a reliable test. YouTube has begun throttling video streaming especially during peak hours. I can't hardly stream an SD video around 6:00 anymore.
