I have ordered the UMI Cross / C1 from iShoppstore and am expecting delivery just after Christmas. I am aware the problems people have had with the Chinese smartphones regarding the Wifi and GPS connectivity but I believe for the most part these are fixable so it is with interest that I await to see what problems I will have with mine. I did see some newspaper article that UMI were going to start selling their smartphones in the UK.... http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/business/news/umi-smartphones-to-launch-in-the-uk-29610580.html Not sure if this article is to be taken seriously though.
It would be nice to get the KitKat upgrade for this model though I doubt this will happen any time soon. I am very curious if you have resolved the issues you had with the Cross. Can you let me know how its going for you and what problems you've had as I'm sure my phone will be the same.
I know the transition from Android 4.1 to 4.2 included some key features but from 4.2 to 4.3 I could do without. I don't know much about the difference between 4.3 and 4.4 though. I guess I'm more worried about how the phone works when I get it.
Cheers

yes please direct me umi cross sp tools and latest stock rom (mine is 20131128-145411).
how to backup/restore rom with sp tools?
gps (slow even cannot lock) and compass (erratic) issues.

How to get Android 4.3 on my phone

I see a theme here says Android 4.4 has been released, currently only a small number of the phone will likely install Android 4.4 system, I just bought the THL W8S phone, it is Android 4.2, although it can not upgrade to Android 4.4, I think it should be able to upgrade to Android 4.3, You tried to put his mobile phone to upgrade to the Android 4.3? Is there any way? Can any one know how to get that? Please guide me, thank you

4.4 isn't out.. yet.
It's a chinese dual chip phone, isn't it? It'll be hard to find decent developers to get their hands on it.
I don't think it's just a matter of "BLAM! ANDROID 4.3 INSTALLED!". There are drivers, frameworks and stuff, things that'll surely be hard to find. Maybe if you look into a chinese xda-developers like forum?

There will be no 4.4 official stock for galaxy s3, never, ever.
If you need 4.4.4 like CM go to cyanogenmod site and follow the steps (easy peasy installation).
It's true, that iam a newbie in Android's world.
I own samsung s3 since 2 months & it's my first android experience.
That's why i need a little explanation
why official stock rom for version 4.4.4. isn't available for our phones.
When Win XP has arrived , it was for all PCs, isn't it ?

That is samsungs decision, after some time they stop the development for the phone, and it's been 2 years now with s3, from ics to jelly bean, and the time has come and development is stopped.
But, you have samsung kitkat ports here on xda under android development, but, since they are unofficial there might be some bugs if you don't pair them with a good kernel.
Since you are new, i suggest you to take a break and read, read all the FAQ, read every info, read about EFS backup (very important) and then, when you have all the information you need, go with rom flashing etc.
And listen to me, if you won't read and inform yourself you will mess something up and come back here to ask for help, and first response you will get is read before doing anything.
Happy readin, flashing, cheers
In this case here is my next question
On the horizon appears the next version - Android 5.0
If i understand correctly, that means once again Android x.x will not be made available for our phones and we will need to get again some custom roms, aren't we ?

Is there a way to downgrade sm-850A back to Kit Kat?

My boyfriend's AT&T Galaxy Alpha just auto-updated to lollipop.. nothing seem to work correctly, even with a factory reset. Everything was working perfectly fine on Kit Kat. I was wondering is it possible to downgrade back to Kit Kat with this phone?
I have limited experience with Android. I know it is possible to do this for devices that is rooted (e.g my Galaxy S5 or my Nexus 7). But I don't quite know where to start for the SM-850A, where the device is not rooted.

Hello,
Downgrading is not shown as an option, neither is someone working on a root exploit for either of the versions (KitKat and Lollipop in this case) so I guess you're stuck with the Lollipop version. Although its not that bad you could wait for someone to release a rooting method so it could get easier for you to downgrade but until then you're stuck :/ Sad to say there arent much choices with that model :/
Best regards,
James

Thanks James! yeah I know this model doesn't have a root and I don't think it will ever be an option (never say never but meh!)... But curious was it possible to downgrade without a root. Thanks for answering my question I like the phone, I did buy it for myself (and the bf too).. but I returned it after seeing there was no root... but the bf kept his...now he is hating it!

Hello,
The issue is that you cannot get the KitKat firmware from anywhere, nobody has ever tried to upload it at all, otherwise I would of recommended it for sure.
Best regards,
James

Im really not familiar with custom rom, rooting or jailbreak, however i hear these terms whenever i ask about it.
Finally a friend adviced me to visit xda and register. I would highly appreciate if someone could help.
BTW here are the apps im trying to use, but it installs a messaging app which disables the default messaging app, if youre using kitkat and newer OS.

No bro this is impossible for 2 reasons :
1- this phone is new and first firmware was 5.0 so any custom rom will be on 5.0 or up ...
2- this phone is based on mediatek chipset ... And i think no developer will make a custom rom for it ... As you see the android development part of this phone is empty ... Only official firmware is available for now
No hope for jelly bean custom rom ... Why you need it ? Lollipop is much better and more beautiful and faster than jellybean (except battery usage )

Yes. You can upgrade your android version by flashing custom rom if available for your device.
