Is there any root method for free wired/wireless tethering? I know there are the apps that do this but I rather not go that route

Follow these steps each time you want to wireless tether for free in this exact order.
1.) Open the mobile hotpot that came with the phone and enable it. If this is the first time running it, configure the hotspot how you like.
2.) Go to your phone dialer and dial "*#*#4636#*#*" without the quotes. This will access the phone testing menu.
3.) Go to Phone Information.
4.) Scroll down and tap "Turn radio off"
5.) Now tap "Turn radio on"
6.) Enjoy your free wireless tethering!
Remember, you need to perform these steps each time you want to tether.

I already tried this after reading it elsewhere and confirmed it works. It's not going to screw up your phone if you try it if that's what you're worried about.

It's weird though because the wireless tether app, no matter what version I download wont offer infrastructure mode, only ad-hoc. And some of my devices are only compatible with infrastructure.

Easy and free wifi hotspot
I spend most of my time lurking, but post every once in a while. Here is what I did:
If it's rooted then you can use Google's Wifi tether app for free.
Install v. 2.0.7
I bought my DX2 today and had it rooted with Gingerbreak and installed this, and it works for me. No problems. I miss being able to talk on the phone and use data though (from last phone).
Hope this helps!
It wont let me post links. Hmmm. Go to:

Hello,
I didn't see a forum for the Razr Maxx, so I'm posting my question here in the Razr forum. On my HTC Incredible, I am able to change the 3G Mobile Hotspot settings by dialing ##778, selecting Edit Mode, entering 000000, opening M.IP Default Profile, and editing the NAI and DUN NAI fields by removing the "dun" from the address. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this on the Razr Maxx. Does anyone have any idea how to do this for the Mobile Hotspot on the Razr/Razr Maxx?
Why not just use wifi tether?

yup. Im rooted but rocking FoxFi. no issues. I was downloading a torrent the other day while tethered, was coming down at 2.7M a second. fixFi RICKS!!!
I have heard of Foxfi, and I will look into that, so thank you for the suggestion. But, I am still interested in the setting that I described for two reasons. First, other Incredible users have reported slow wifi speeds when using a 3rd party app as opposed to Verizon's 3G Mobile Hotspot (or just Mobile Hotspot on the Maxx), although I have not heard anything about speed with a 3rd party app on the Razr Maxx. Second, I am just interested in knowing more about my phone.
Perhaps someone can answer your specific questions about settings, however, I will talk a little more about FoxFi- speeds on 4G are ridiculously fast. I ran FoxFi on my Maxx and my Acer Iconia tablet was getting over 25mbps down speeds and 14mbps up.
It's not a perfect app. Occasionally, you'll have to stop and restart the hotspot to get your device to "see" your Razr, but overall, it's great... and once connected, rock solid.
Additionally, it appears to me that fox fi somehow uses the phones native Hotspot connection but bypasses it. I used to use Wi-fi tether rooted on my last phone and I never saw phones hotspot pop up. But on the RAZR unrooted, I can also affirm that the previously mentioned speeds are real and accurate. The app is great.

Never had problems with foxfi and resetting it. The speed that you get trough the phone/tablet apps are artificial.

Well I just finally rooted a few days ago and installed Wifi Tether and it works right out of the box, but based on recommendations here I decided to try Foxfi and it connected but it had some error in windows (which on the Foxfi page they say to run the internet repair wizard) well I ran the wizard and the problem persisted so instead of trying to trouble shoot I just went the easy way and use Wifi Tether.
I installed Foxfi. The first time I connected to it, I had no internet access. But the second time and since then it has worked fantastically. I am very happy with this solution, and I thank those of you who have suggested the app to me. If anyone has any ideas, it would still be nice, however, to know about the NAI settings and if they're accessible/editable. Just for tinkering's sake.
Does anyone know how foxfi speed compares to native tethering speed that rooted RAZR users might enjoy?

'I tried using foxfi after rooting because I didn't know the settings to change for the bypass of subscription check for stock hot spot... the foxfi was so slow on all devices.. I have the paid version with the KEY and it still is super slow.. It is almost like it is using a Bluetooth connection to send data it is so slow... after I found the correct setting changes on my 4.2.2 droid maxx the speeds doubled
I'm sure this has been discussed but I am on leak 211 and had an issue setting up tether. Someone recommended FoxFi app from play store and it is perfect! I rarely tether but needed it yesterday and this is a gem. No real setting up. Just download and turn on. Wanting to share.
Discovered it myself about a month ago. Great app!

I wasn't able to get it to work myself since I use the tether to connect my tablet. I was however able to get the SQLLite Edit Hack to work a treat and that is fab!
Foxfi
I was recently on vacation and was able to use this app to tether my tablet. It worked perfectly and I got great speeds on the tablet. Favorite tether app so far.
I have been using FoxFi for a while now, and I hoped that it would work on ICS and it works fine! I love that app. I wish there was a pay version to donate to the developer.
This app is "Awesome" I love it and is a definite "must have" in any app drawer...

Using WIFI I got 6.5Mbps dl/5Mbps ul.
GB 2.3.6
WIFI Tether doesn't work - activates hotspot
Barnicle doesn't work either
I cant get this thing to work anymore. Worked fine first two times, but now connects and has no internet access on my laptop. Haven't changed settings on their.
Edit: Uninstalled and everything worked again. I guess that's the only way to fix it if it stops working.
I'm still not having any luck. It will connect but no access. I can get just a little bit of data to pull then connection times out. I seen of foxfi app in the market they said should work better with droid razr ics update. I think they realize the problem. Hope it gets fixed. The hack does exactly the same thing. Not sire what it could be.

Fox-fi works great. A little tip though, if you use Chrome as a browser on your laptop or whatever you'll still get service messages and blocks use safari or Firefox if you're tethering. This may not be the case for everyone but that was the case for me when I was tethered on my mac book.
I also got the paid version of foxfi don't know if that matters or not.

what i did for quite a while was, i got foxfi, and i purchased the key. (it was a lot cheaper when paid key first came out).
the biggest thing you need to remember is, with a tablet, t mobile doesn't detect it. on a laptop, use chrome, and download the "user agent switcher" extension for it. use an Android browser, and you can slip past the guards.
Fox-Fi is a excellent choice, i have used it non stop with no interuptions

Ive heard that if you use the user agent switcher extension on google chrome it fixes the problem.
OK so I saw on another thread that there was an update for FOXFI (Pdanet+) for NON ROOTED WIFI access. I updated the app through the playstore and tried it out. It requires you to set up a VPN but after following the directions I hit the wifi option and it worked. :good:
So the question is does VZW see this as a "Mobile hotspot"? It showed up as a mobile hotspot on my phones tray but it did not give me a warning about usage etc. I'm on the unlimited plan.
Could this be what we have been waiting for?!?!?!
i love this app. used to use it on my incredible, but then it broked... but now yay! works great on my DNA. just search for the full key apk to get rid of the usage limit.. if you look hard enough, you'll find it.

Make sure you create a PATTERN lock, not pin lock. Took me forever to figure this out!
I use the pin lock and it works fine.
Was using clockwork tether instead for awhile, but just installed this to give it a try. I didn't know it actually allowed and enabled your phones mobile hotspot. Gotta love getting free apps xD.
it doesnt work
I'm excited to give this a try, but before plunking down the $8, can someone please give a step by step to maximize the number of people for whom this will work?
There appears to be a need to put a pattern lockscreen on...anything else? Download the free version of FoxFi, then purchase the PDANet+ key (link here, you won't find the link on the FoxFi app page...at least, I didn't until a helpful fellow poster directed me to this):

You need to delete the certificate you created... Goto settings, security, and under credential storage hit clear credentials. You will have to repeat the entire process to use FoxFi if you want no lock since FoxFi requires the certificate/screen lock.
