[Q] Unlocking of NEC Terrain SIM/Root - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I was wondering if anyone would be interrested in helping me unlocking the NEC Terrain.. both SIM unlock and Root...
I have purchased the device, but is currently unable to use it, cause it's locked to AT&T...
I have talked to both AT&T and NEC, and both claim that they are unable to unlock the device...
I have done some ROMs earlier and have A LOT of Linux knowledge, as well as some programming and Hardware knowledge..
But I have no idea where to start on this unlocking stuff..
Anyone out there willing to help????
Regards...

I just posted some progress over here. Now that we have root, can you help with getting the boot.img patched?

Hi,
I have recently purchased the NEC Terrain from ebay & they shipped it to india but its locked by AT&T and i am unable to get it unlocked & they dont have any service in india, please share if any one has been able to unlock it or get a custom cooked rom or something to use it with other network.

FINALLY an unlocked terrain!!!!
GOOD NEWS for you NEC Terrain lover! Finally someone on ebay was selling a lot of UNLOCKED Terrain. I was very skeptical at first because I was assured by many sources that this phone is not unlockable, but since the seller guaranteed it, so why not, I got one. Now I am the proud owner of an UNLOCKED Terrain in Canada and using it on the Telus network. The phone works very well, the only problem is that the partition for apps only have 750M, and we cannot automatically install apps on to onboard the 4G storage. I'll dig around and see if there is anyway I can re-partition it or find a way to link the 4G for app use.
cheers!

Yes, please help!

yup... the seller is worldofwireless718
and you are in luck, looks like he has a few left. Since I am not allowed to post link here, you can look for item number 261441951041.
P.S. I have absolutely zero affiliation with the seller, so buy at your own risk

NEC Terrain can root ?
Hello all,
Saw the thread some times ago, and I just purchase a Terrain from ebay as well (not yet arrived), according to seller, it was unlocked and I though it can be use in any other countries as long as compatible with their 3G / 4G frequency.
BTW, cannot see any root progress here but I google around and found it can be done by fast boot cm-hero-recovery.img and use below command:
adb shell mount /system
adb push su /system/bin/
adb shell chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/
adb shell reboot
After rebooting, you will finally get root access on NEC Terrain.
I want to update my MB632 to a faster / more ram smartphone for business as I really love qwerty keyboard... BB is also good but not as many apps as Android do.... a physical keyboard still my favor.
Please let me know if anyone success to root with that guide.
Thank you!
Kent

thanks to justDave on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48236591
I was able to gain temp root access to my Terrain. I am trying to gain permanent root to it so I can do a backup of the ROM. Once I got that I will upload the ro.secure of my unlocked Terrain to this thread.
On a semi-related note, the /data/ partition on my stock rom is incredibly small at 787M, and with all the bloatwares, there is only 629M free, which is no where near enough for me. I am trying to create a new ROM that will mount mmcblk0p14, which has 4.3G, to data instead of as an internal sdcard. I'll let you know what I can find.

thank you dinokent, I really wish the way you wrote here works, but unfortunately, I think the bootloader is locked or this phone doesn't support fastboot at all. If I run "adb reboot bootloader" it just does a regular full reboot. Recovery mode works, but with just these options:
- reboot system now
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- repair software by sdcard
- maintenance
first three options are as their names suggested. If I choose maintenance, I have to put in a 10 digit password, which of course I do not have. In my opinion, the "repair software by sdcard" is our best bet. I probably need to create a custom rom and then make an update.zip to flash the rom there. If you guys find anything new, please let me know here.

bad news.....
so yeah, I have been trying for the last couple of weeks to get the permanent root going, and then see if I can rearrange the partitions and maybe even see if there is a way to get it sim unlock for some of you guys. Unfortunately I have hit a major road block. Using temp root, I was able to get the boot partition off, but when I try to dd my custom boot image back on, the change didn't stick even though the dd command came back success. This prompts me to think that the phone is NAND locked and so far I can't find any info on how to bypass that. Anyone with any idea, please feel free to let me know and I'll give it a shot.

I too want to update this phone to at least KitKat... hmmm

Any new about the unlock? Temporary unlock, anything?
Thank you

nope, still can't unlock it (unless you already have an unlocked one), also there is no permanent root process yet. The problem remains that the boot and recovery partitions are locked and can't just dd a new image on to them. Temporary root is working fine using run_root_shell, but that is only giving me root access when I am using ADB.

As it is a Sharp made phone, I am wondering if the SH-12C rooting method works.
Attached are the latest version root tool files.
Please install both of them first.
- Run SHBreak
- Hit "Break" (1 or 2 should be fine)
- Run SHBreak again
- Hit "Copy SU"
- Run ISTweak
- "Enable SU"
Try to run app which requires root access to make sure it is rooted successfully.
If it could be rooted, I will post the wifi tether method for testing.
Thanks guys!

needs a custom rom real bad. was thinking of asking cyanogenmod to setup a donation thing and if we all donated 10$ and after 100 owners they can buy it and start developing. I'm sure loads of people will gladly donate even the Japanese and Australian users.
EDIT: Finally cut my sim card to fit the slot, but now phone says it is locked! Anyone know how I can unlock it?

Yes, you need to go to a DoCoMo shop with a valid Japanese ID card, and ask for the sim unlock. Costs 3150 yen. There's no other method AFAIK...
Very few of these online Keitai sellers sell unlocked phones, even though now DoCoMo can unlock their models released starting April 1 2011.

Please help to obtain Root for ZTE N9515 (Boost ZTE Warp Sync)

I apologize if this is in the wrong section or been answered before, I looked and found nothing. I didn't want to spend the money for an expensive phone from the popular brands but wanted something decent. I came across the warp sync 2GB Ram, Quad Core ,5" HD Screen, 8mp camera and Sprints new Enchanced LTE speeds I get over 45 Megs anytime of the day all under $180. I love the phone but I just can't find a root guide for it.
It seems to never been rooted, the bootloader comes unlocked but has a secure boot image. From what I seen online that seems to be the reason why it can't be rooted. Is there a way work around? or a way to make a insecure img? I have tried every auto root from device/pc method. Source Kernel can be found here http://opensource.ztedevice.com/

Already tried both methods listed on the site resulting in each one failing, I've also found more people with this phone having the same issue also claiming to have tried all methods. Is there a way to make the boot image unsecure? I found one website stating that since the bootloader comes unlocked that a method to try would be to install a custom recovery then flash the SU to root. But I can't find a custom recovery for this phone anywhere, is it possible to use a customer recovery from a different phone on this one? sorry if that's a stupid question.

A copy and paste I wrote on android forums....someone here might take a look.
I am looking at some stuff now. I can't download the files at the moment due to slow internet. But we can get into Download Mode by holding down both volume buttons and turning the phone on. I am wondering if we can use something like this. https://sites.google.com/site/zteopenfirmware/download-mode you can flash various files in download mode. Or something like this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2163493 (Method 5 : ZTE Firmware Flasher) , I think low level access through download mode or FTM is the key. If or when we can get a recovery on this phone, from what I read it will replace FTM
The NanDL for firefox does connect to our phone and a guy named SuperR modified the boot.img.
It look like some work is being done on the ZTE Zmax that has the same problem as ours. Hopefully it will work.
This is my third ZTE smartphone ...the other two was a pleasure and a good learning experience to root. I am not tech savvy enough to root any phone without instructions. So I join the rank with the other that wait.[emoji17]
so you guys still haven't figured it out?
Zte zmax achieved root, might try kingroot to get tmp root, from there you will be on your own, bit it might work

Root for the Verizon V10 possible(Not ROM installation, just root)?

Hi guys,
Just wondering if I can get root without unlocking the bootloader. Seems that I;m hearing that this isn't possible, which makes no sense. I know Verizon is Verizon when it comes to locking things down(They were even blocking free games on dumbphones back in the day so that you would have to buy them, even when the manufacturer included them for free), but it seems that gaining root access is completely different than flashing a new ROM. Am I correct here?
Also, would towelroot work for this phone? I know it's a nice simple solution, but I believe their claim is for phones manufactured before Jun '14.
Lastly, would a solution like Safestrap work here? It's what I used on my last phone (S3), when Verizon locked THAT down.
I know it is a battle fighting Verizon on this, and I know it takes time, I was just wondering if I am reading this right, or if I could root, but run the standard ROM, just with the extra access... Really, the phone is working so well that I just want better control for things like deleting/disabling/freezing stock apps and such.
Thanks for any help!! Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, seemed appropriate.
I am a user of H961N and it is also cannot be rooted.
I think root injection may be the answer.

I think that you may try it and it may work, as the above problem may not due to the phone but my computer.
Where did you get you system.img file? if you are using the one from the g4 it will not work. The file needs to be rooted for your device and then injected.

I'm curious, the 'Fail' just means that it fails to work, right? Phone works fine after that and all? No bricking or need to restore? If so, that's a safe risk. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good luck with this but I have a feeling that unless someone has an exploit laying around, you'll need an unlocked bootloader.

Thanks for this.....but i was reading that article...it says you root it by flashing the superuser zip in TWRP recovery....um....you cannot flash custom recovery without root....or am i missing something. you need an unlocked bootloader
http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-unlock-bootloader-on-lg-v10/
and adb & fastboot tool, not root
To install a custom recovery
http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-install-twrp-recovery-on-lg-v10-h901/
That's how I usually would do it, the way it's described in the articles, since I still have to get my v10 from Far East can't test it.
And don't worry, I don't feel like you are bashing.
Life's too short to take anything too personal.
Awesome thank you for clearing that up!! I was totally confused for a second there.

What you've mention is only working for tmobile V10, since it's bootloader can be easily unlocked while the other are not.

Thanks for clearing that up. Didn't know that and didn't see that on the article.
Cheers
I think if LG release a genuine ROM file, we could replace recovery parition with rooted one and flash it to our phone, that the only way open but LG hasn't released any ROM file yet.

Sorry, wasn't sure, as I was asking about development.... Sometimes this is like a scene form the movie Big Trouble... At the airport, "Arrivals or Departures"? "Well, we're arriving at the airport, but then we're going to be departing.".

Unlock bootloader LGL43AL Tracfone

I bought a LGL43AL tracphone. I tried to root it with several root apps and PC programs. I was finally able to root it with Kingo Root via PC. However, When I tried to run SuperSU I get a message "There is no SU binary installed and Super SU cannot install it. This is a problem!". Also, when I reboot my phone, it becomes unrooted. After trying many things, I have come to the conclusion that my bootloader is locked. On this phone, recovery is merely to reset to factory mode. There are no other options. I did find a tutorial on how to unlock European lg tracfones by getting a code. I am in the US and was leary to try it. Which led me here to get some advice. Any help or suggestions would be great.
Ok, so I've been looking into this some more and have found that the For LG Optimus Zone 3, LG K4 LTE, LG Spree, and the LG Rebel LTE are basically the same phone. Does this mean that I can use the same method to root my phone (mine being the Rebel LTE)? I ask because there are ample threads on the Optimus zone 3. I don't really care about the warranty on my phone. I just don't want to brick it.
@becksterorange
This was the method I used to replace KingUser with SuperSU on a few different devices.

I haven't tried again yet. Been too busy at work. I might get a chance to try if it rains today because I won't have to go to work. I'll get back to you when I do though.
Fail. I can get my phone to root. But, when I try to install the su binary by any method, I lose my root. ?

I tried also with kingo and kingroot and lost root also. Bummer. Not a big deal but root is always welcomed. Main thing i use root for is to use the adaway app and delete that god aweful tracfone boot and shutdown logo, which requires root. Maybe someone else will figure it out and share with us.
I disabled most of the google apps as they are useless to me. Very snappy for what it is. I got it on a good deal at walmart. They had it priced wrong at $19.98 and had to sell it to me because of their goof up. Was suppose to be like $79.99.
Nice price for your phone. I really just like to get rid of the bloat and to use lucky patcher. Maybe someday on this phone. ?

I got the LG L44VL version for tracfone. Looks like there is no root for this device. Like anything newer than 2014 and low end is a no go.

I'm having the same challenges, too.
Has anyone tried oem unlock?
Nope...still researching.
I was wondering if anyone has tried " fastboot oem unlock-go" command.
We need a way to access our bootloader. Can some one please assist?

Can I root my Mate 10 pro (and how)

Am clueless after reading several threads about rooting this device. Some information are totally outdated. Some seem not apply to my case.
Here is where I am:
Huawei mate 10 pro
BLA-L29 8.0.0.150(C432patch01)
Developer options ON -> OEM unlocking ON (Allow the bootloader to be unlocked)So, where do I go from here? (am sorry if that really can be found already in this forum, I however did not find it ... maybe I'm just too stupid)
I love the perfect screen name.
Did you search, at least?? Look in the question and answer forum and in the general forum as well.
I'm sure that your answer is there in bold letters. But. If you don't have a bootloader unlock code, then you are out of luck, and TotallyClueless.

Well, I am kinda tech affin, and every associate comes to me when it is about computers or even smartphones, despite me stating over and over again that I actually have no clue about the inner workings of android or smartphones. Well, at least I can use the Apps better then them... (not really an art, most of them can't even install them ... and I mean direct from the google play store)

Just turning that option on doesn't unlock your bootloader. You have to use some commands using adb to actually unlock the bootloader. Search that for that thread, and you'll see the full listing of instructions. However, if you didn't request that code before Huawei took it awei, then you won't be able to do anything, as has been said in many a thread.

As nabril15 says, it's not possible on BLA-L29C432B146 or later. This is due to an updated bootloader which can't be downgraded.
So sadly there is no way for you to unlock, unless Huawei opens their unlock site again.
Hello,
I'm in the same place:
Huawei mate 10 pro
BLA-L29 8.0.0.150(C432patch01)
but my bootloader is unlocked
and under 8.0.0.145 I also had root
how do I get root?

1) Go in TWRP to "Advanced" and open "Terminal" - type following commands:
Code:
echo KEEPVERITY=true>>/data/.magisk
echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true>>/data/.magisk
Confirm the entry to apply it and go back to the main menu on "Install"
2) Flash latest Magisk-v17.1.zip with TWRP

Mexxx... At one point some time ago, I wiped my data partition, so I don't know if it's encrypted or not; I assume that it is not. When I run twrp blanc, I see that it decrypts data and then I can its contents.
Do I want to preserve force encryption? Or should I set it to false?

You'd want it true.
If you have flashed firmware between the "some time ago" and now you are encrypted.
And removing encryption requires both wipe data AND edit fstab in /vendor/etc. fstab is replaced when you flash a new firmware and you will be encrypted again.
Also, if you're using TWRP by Pretoriano80 that's the reason why you can see data, it can decrypt.
Does anyone have experience with this 'DCunlocker' program that has to be unlocked with 4,- Euros?
Does it work to unlock the bootloader?
I can't believe this phone can't be unlocked anymore, if I would have known that I wouldn't have bought it.

DO NOT EVER TRY ROOT THIS PHONE OR EVEN BUY IT IF ROOTING IS YOUR AIM.
Huawei have ensured that they make it impossible to unlock the bootloader or to root. What will happen is you will need to buy a bootloader unlock code from Funky Huawei for 55 USD, when you brick your phone you will need to pay them a extra 18 USD for the unbricking tool. No wonder western countries are kicking this POS brand out of their countries. Huawei just wants to spy on us hence why they don't want us to tamper with their software.
NEVER HAUWEI AGAIN!
XIAOMI ALL THE WAY!!
guess i wont be spending/wasting $75 on this phone going to go out on a limb and say same for the P20 pro? spend to unlock it???

Yes unfortunately the same. Rooting or doing any modding on Huawei is extremely risky and made even more difficult with Huawei c**k blocking.

Sorry Sam, I just saw this. If your intent is to root then save the $75. However, it still remains a powerful phone with an amazing battery life. The updates are far and few, but let's be honest, the phone still works fine. I'm not being petty-minded, I'm simply offering a point of view. I have mine rooted with the stock rom. I haven't been able to do a whole lot rooted other than to freeze a few apps using titanium backup. Was that worth the hassle it took to root it? I'm not sure. I have a fast and awesome phone, stock and rooted and not really doing much with the root.
Good luck and decide for yourself.
@nabril15 thanks for the reply ... i have the s8+ and im tired of samsung and looking to move away from them ... i wanted this phone because i couldnt pass up the price ... im rooted and locked BL now ... so it would be the same with the 10 PRO ..... is it better then what i have .. id have to buy it and test it myself ... not really sure what to do but i appreciate the comments ...

No problem. If you can get this phone for 75, go for it. Updates, schmupdates. Big deal. It is fast, the battery is ridiculous, the camera is very good, and it's a good phone. So we have to wait longer for Pie which is probably very similar. So what? 75 for any smartphone is a good deal. Face it

It depends on what build it comes with. If it's security patch June or later (in most cases) you won't be able to use DC to unlock it. There are other, much more expensive services available (10x the price of DC) to get unlock code if your build is too new.
