Has anyone attempted making the new Hangouts for MMS/SMS/Hangouts work on a VZW TW based ROM like CleanROM?
I can't even find a thread about people doing it in CM!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507251
I'm looking to give that a shot and report back this week, if no one has.
Curious what else would be needed from 4.2/4.3/4/4 to make it work (since VRAMC3 is like 4.1.2).
Well, I tried it. I installed it normally. No hitches. Works just fine.
Haven't tried video chatting yet, which (as I understand) has issues on some devices, like the Moto X (needs a different library or something) but works fine on others.
I will report!

I have been using it since droid life posted it last week and it seems to work well enough. I stopped using it because I prefer to have individual notifications.
Hangouts just updated via the Play Store for me today and asked to take over SMS/MMS duties after installing.

I looked for it at the time of my post and it was not available for update.
I wonder if an official version is coming for some users!
Because video chatting DOES NOT work (I should update the original post here).
Can't get it to happen.
EDIT: My Hangouts only updated to 1.2.018. Won't update to the 2.0.x yet.
Strange. I'm on CleanROM (Stock basically)

Yeah, when are they going to let individual hangout/conversations have different notification settings (other than ignoring notifications or not)?
It CAN'T be a hard feature to implement.
I'm keeping Handcent installed for now. But this thing won't update in the Play Store. Hoping to have a version where Video chat works, because I use that more htan phone calls.
Most of my friends (even iphones) have Hangouts now, and I just video call + turn off video + turn on 'handset' for sound (so it's basically a phone call).
WOrks well for a few friends I have that have 0 reception at their house but have wifi with good internet at home.
Google usually does staged roll-outs of updates for their apps. I'd think that by tomorrow you should be able to update to the latest version. Also, try going to Hangouts in the Play Store. I've seen sometimes where apps can be updated, but they don't show as being able to update from the all apps screen, but you can update it from the Play Store listing itself.

Yeah I'll check tomorrow. I went right to it, too, to check. Good advice though.
Are you on the stock-based 4.1.2? I wonder if I need 4.2 or 4.3 ROM going to make it happen.
I put that new Video lib .so file for the video chat. with OR without it, video calling seems to connect for a second, then stops working. I'll just wait for the official one, I do suppose!

The new, official version is rolling out.
http://www.droid-life.com/2013/11/07/google-hangouts-2-0-122-with-sms-integration-rolling-out-to-all/
So like imnuts said, just check back and it will eventually update.
i wish hangouts had a private option like stock mms. i hate the message being rolled over the status bar.

I wouldn't advise updating the Netflix app. I did yesterday and now I only get audio and no video. I'm running CM7 beta. Can anyone using stock or another rom confirm if yours is working. I saw in the app market comments that others were having problems as well but haven't seen anything over here.
I have stock gingerbread and I don't have any video issues. Although I was getting like a fast forward audio/video thing when I started a movie. It corrected after I stopped and started it. I like it better because they fixed the orientation situation.

Well I guess it's a cm7 problem like the HBO to Go app. Damn, I love the rom but this needs to be fixed. Hopefully I can flash a backup to get it going again.
yup i had the same issues. i just re-installed a backup of 1.4.0 and it works fine again.
Well, I did a cwm restore from a backup I did 2 days ago. I opened netflix and gave me an error about my device being deactivated, I just clicked through the ok's and it logged me out. I logged back in and all was well. Also, after reviewing the bug reports on CM7, I came across an interesting fix that may work for plex, I'll post the link below in the hopes that it will help somebody.

I'm running a rooted at&t stock atrix g4 and have no problems with Netflix.
I know there are other threads out there about this subject, but figured I would bring it here to the Razr threads.. Who would like to help me get S Voice working on the Razr? I installed the zip that I got at another thread and it doesn't work 100% yet (likes to hang on stuff...)
I'm still not an experienced Android hacker/coder, but would be willing to help out one if they wanted to take part in this project..
I do have Linux command line experience, run Linux, and have had a few years of webOS hacking So I'm not a total newb to the game lol
Let me know if you would be interested in helping me with this
Thanks,

As this contains no development.
I fixed the issue with the mic not working, seems to be an issue on my end and nothing to do with S Voice.. Only thing left that I can think of before we can call this 100% working, is changing it from launching only stock apps, to the apps that you set as stock (I.E. Google Voice for texting, whatever you have set for calling, etc.)
Certain things like saving alarms and memos and such will not work unless you have the corresponding clock and memo apps from SGS3.
Really its not worth it. Aokp and cm will have jellybean merged within the month more than likely.Google Now does everything s voice does but way better.
I used s voice for a few days and was disappointed. Give it a few weeks and just use Google Now

Do you really think that it isn't worth it? Granted, I've yet to use Google Now, but I really like S Voice.. And I think it would only take minor changes to change the path of the app launched for things like that.

I really think its not worth it at this point. Its more or less just a themed Vlingo with system app access (to sammys system apps).
Wait a few weeks and run Google Now ( or read over this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045). They have GoogleNow running on ICS but i think it has something not working last i checked.
I SHOULD have a modded Svoice that me and some people here at xda worked on when i had my Razr. Worked just fine other than saving alarms and memos. Ill look and see if its still in my dropbox and link here if it is.

The Google Now that they have working is missing voice recognition (something about it being Jelly Bean specific kernel stuff) and that's the only thing keeping me from using it.. The only thing

Here is a full system.img dump from the new Nexus 5 that was released yesterday. Droid Life posted the updated Google Apps here:
http://www.droid-life.com/2013/10/3...-5-dump-search-launcher-and-more/#more-123662
I have Infected Rom on my Rez and updated some of the apps to the latest versions. Google Home (the new launcher) works great. The new Hangouts is now also your SMS app. Gmail, Google Keyboard (with built in emoji plugin), and Google Play Services also work. Google Gallery FC on me, and the new Camera app works, but the new feature (don't know what it is called) FC'ed when I clicked on it. Camera settings is set for 8m pixels, but when viewed in the old Gallery, the pics weren't full size. The pic quality was great, though.
Throughout the day and weekend, REV3NT3CH and I will be testing more new .apk's and will keep you all informed. This system.img dump also includes the build.prop and the boot.img. We are gonna do our best to get either the Nexus 5 system ported over to the Rez, or build straight from AOSP source.
If any other Devs would like in on this, then please PM either REV3NT3CH or myself, and we can go from there.
I am NOT a Dev myself, still learning a few things, but know enough to do what we need to do. Any questions then feel free to ask, and if this thread is in the wrong section then please let me know, or move it to the right section.
Here is the link to the full system dump:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/hty7m61cgy16bcq/Nexus 5 dump.zip
Hope this can help get us started for the Rez.
EDIT: My dropbox links are generating too much traffic. Uploading to Mediafire now. Dropbox links are still working currently, though. Once uploaded to mediafire, I will put the links up. Thanks all!
ANOTHER EDIT: Here is the mediafire link for the system dump and the apps.

Xda is generally quieter during 9-5 on the east coast.
If you guys can port this to the Rezound, that would be awesome. I've got a port of 4.3.1 running on my Rezound and it runs pretty well. I'm not aware of any inherent reason KitKat can't run (except to the extent that Wallet requires NFC) on Rezound hardware.

I tried most of these on tachyon 1.2, just quick apk install no real diagnostics. I found the new Google search seems to close right after opening (no fc just closes).
The launcher seems to work but relies on the search piece which generates errors, it kinda works with both installed, but generally needs a Dev to investigate for our devices.
Email app seems to work, but no exchange services tie to it, compared to my other native email app they appear to point to different setting locations.
Clock wouldn't install
Keyboard, Gmail, hangouts, and keep all seem to be fine. Some of the wallpapers are pretty sweet too

Thanks for the info. I haven't had a chance to test out all the apps. You have to install Google Play Services, Google Search, and Google Home to get the launcher to work properly. Voice search part does FC though, but that is the only issue I have found. I installed Google Now to go with it all, and it is sweet, but Voice Search FC's. I think Email and a few others are gonna have to rely on the new services.jar to get it all working properly. Anyone who knows how to read code better than me hopefully will figure it out. I will post more apps and what is working later on today, hopefully.
Try installing Exchange2Google.apk to get the Exchange to work in the new Email.apk.

Giving some of these apps a try on a clean install of carbon.
I can't get chrome or drive working.

I installed launcher with Google home, prebuilt, and velvet. I haven't tried search yet but am going to do the library tip above.

Time for a big update here. I got home last night and played around with my new phone for a couple of hours.
Once it was done restoring apps I hit the home button and guess what, it had restored Themer from the market.
It works 100 perfectly fine. The only issue I had was trying to go in to choose a theme.
It kept giving me a pop up that my device wasn't supported. To get past that I hit OK and instead of hitting a category just clicked on the themes pane to the right. I was able to scroll down and select one, and install it, everything is perfect.

Oh I know, from the other thread, I just wanted everyone to know that it DOES work. Not sure why it was restored from Google Play, but I'm one happy camper!
Great on HTC one
Interesting. I'm not sure if using "Themer" is variant specific on the G3 (can't see why it would be), but it isn't working on mine. When I use Google Play in the browser, the G3 isn't one of the highlighted devices for remote install of the app. When I look up "Themer" via Google Play on my phone, it doesn't even show up as an option for download.
I know the devs are working on it, but I just wanted to speak up and let folks know that "Themer" might not be working on all G3s.

Same with me, when i search on google play for Themer no results, are they going to make it available for Lg G3?
its great..:good:
They are going to make it available, if you read this thread and the other ones you'll see they replied they have a g3 on the way. As I said before, mine installed because of the Backup Restore feature when you sign into a new phone.
When I backed up everything from my Nexus 5 I backed this one up to and was also able to restore it that way.
Other than not being able to go through and look at the newest themes because of the pop up, the only other issue I've seen in a week of using this is the previews when you're picking a theme aren't full screen.

Any ETA?
Hello All,
I'm pretty experienced with Android and flashing new software and all that, but I am at my wits end this time. Last week I installed a ROM on my Sprint HTC One M7 that had hangouts as the default SMS app. I hate hangouts, so I installed a third party app. I only ended up having that ROM installed for a day or two before flashing a new one, and suddenly I couldn't receive SMS. I tried tons of things before finally ending up running the RUU to flash back to stock. Since hangouts is in the stock ROM, as soon as it booted, all of my texts popped up right there in hangouts, where they had been being diverted the whole time, despite SMS being turned off in Hangouts.
This time, I updated Hangouts, toggled SMS on and then off again, but all of my incoming texts were still going to Hangouts and not appearing in my stock SMS app at all. Finally, I flashed an updated stock rooted ROM, and no matter what I try, I cannot get Hangouts to stop handling my incoming texts. This is absolutely infuriating, because as aforementioned, I'd rather lobotomize myself with a chopstick than use Hangouts. Has anyone else encountered this? Please help me!
Thanks!

I appreciate the suggestion, but unfortunately this was one of the first things that I tried and it did not work. Hangouts currently has no defaults set and is disabled on my phone. There was a 48 hour period where Hangouts wasn't even installed on my phone but it was still handling incoming texts.

Duplicate installation, perhaps? I had this weird thing going on the other day where Titanium did an automatic restore after flashing a batch install of backups, and I had 2 iterations of Weather Bug (different versions). There have also been times where certain sideloaded apps had 2 iterations installed.
Try using a root file explorer and searching for for Hangouts. Maybe there's an .apk somewhere that still loads up even though it's not "installed" anymore.

Gonna check right now just to rule it out but I don't have high hopes since I did a full wipe before installing the Lollipop ROM that didn't contain Hangouts at all. I appreciate the continued suggestions though.

No Gapps packages, no batch restores? Maybe Google is doing it automatically when you first activate the phone. You're given the option to backup/restore your account, and if you do, the phone will start downloading apps that you had installed before.

Hmmmmm, that's one thing I did not think about, is using the Google restore feature when fresh installing. I did flash GAapps with the Lollipop Build but immediately disabled Hangouts. I wonder if maybe the setting isn't being applied "behind the scenes" when I flash a new ROM and allow Google to automatically restore settings. I'll have to play with this a bit. Thanks again.

That could be it. Installed, then disabled, then installed again automatically. If the restore is coming from a different source from Play Store, it's possible it's not making the same checks for existing installations, giving you a duplicate.

Man, I am really about to pull my hair out with this whole thing. I just installed a new ROM deleted Hangouts from system/app using root explorer after denying the auto-restore for Google and I still couldn't receive texts. Rebooted. Sent myself a few more test texts before re-installing hangouts and lo and behold, Hangouts had been receiving the texts even while not installed on any android device that I own. If Hangouts was a building, I would have looted it and burned it to the ground about an hour ago.

Yeah, I think I have managed to find some super strange bug or something, I don't know. Thanks anyway for your multiple attempts.
What phone/app are you sending the texts from?

Did you figure it out yet?
Did you check under the main settings for default sms app? Also your not using Google restore option are you?

I was wondering if you had any luck finding what causes all the text to go to hangouts. I can receive MMS through messenger but not SMS. I thought I was the only person with this annoying problem. I was about to order another device but there has to be a solution to this problem.

Dray,
I did eventually solve it, though the problem persisted even after RUU. It turns out that the issue was with Google Voice. I don't use Google Voice, but I flashed a ROM that had SMS turned on in Google Voice by default. When I flashed a new ROM, sms was still being handled by Google Voice despite neither Voice nor Hangouts being installed on my phone. You should go into settings in Google Voice and make sure sms is turned off. If the app is not installed on your phone, download it and make sure it is turned off anyway, because as aforementioned it was affecting my sms even though Google Voice wasn't even installed. This should solve it.
