UPDATE:
Ok i just figured out its only one specific area that get warm, in the top right corner. when in landscape mode with power button facing up, this is a non issue as i simply flip the phone to the other side play my games
the back right corner gets a tad warm thats also a non issue and normal for most phones while gaming however I use the included sony case and feel nothing at all.
Love this phone, Iv had a great gaming experience. this will replace my nvidia shield as pc games stream perfectly full speed too. (just some mapping issues with droidmote and HID controllers needs a fixes)

Well the only way to reduce heat is to downclock the processor, which means you need to root and download setcpu. But ftom my experience, it is not as hot as my previous razr maxx, and the good thing about this phone is there's a throttle control to prevent cpu overheat so no overly hot surface.

what I notice is that the heat is not consistent Some HD games (Conduit, Ravensword) dont cuz much heat and are reasonable, Novaa 3 causes alot and with MC4 the heat is inconsistent.

Yeah usually the more complex the game is, the hotter it will go. But seems like Sony capped it around 60C max so if the temp reaches there, the CPU will throttle.

What's extremly hot according to you? Just to have a scientific perspective.

OP, are you gaming while the phone is charging? If yes, don't do that.
I'm not the biggest mobile gamer out there, but i have no issues with heat when i play Riptide GP2 and other GPU intensive games.

Even though I haven't played much I used setcpu and lowered the max from 2150 -> 1190.
All new phones gets hot in the CPU area. I guess it's impossible to design a thin phone and not get some kind of drawback.
I think due to the glass back of this device, the heat is quickly radiated to the ambient. I've an acer a700 sometimes it get so hot its not comfortable to place your fingers over there.
When playing games you should remove any casing, it works like an insulation. You will end up in a vicious heating cycle.

Hey guys. the top corner on the back o my tab gets extremely hot while the screen is on. like Very hot, on the back about an inch and 1/2 below the volume rocker. is this a known issue or should i take it back to bestbuy and get it exchanged?

Thats where the processor is. Are you overclocked? Mine gets warm, but I believe that's because I have it in a case and there is no room for heat dissipation. Heat will kill electronics, so make sure that it does not get too hot.

I would return it, it does not sound normal... I have my unit overclocked at 1.4ghz (on demand 216-1400) and been playing PSX (playstation emulation uses a lot of cpu power) games on it all day... It doesn't get "hot", I haven't even notice it even get slightly warm and I have mine in a case.

Unfortunately this is just another consumer with his or her mind poisoned by companies who sell worthless cooling products for electronic devices.
It requires an education in electrical engineering to understand what is "hot". You cant simply feel the back of your device and guess that it is hot when you have no idea what the temperature even is and when you have no idea what temperature is hot for electronics.
Chips can run at 80c which is getting close to water boiling. If the back of your device does not burn your skin to a blister then NO, your device is not running hot or anywhere near warm.
Education is key to understanding our reality.

doesnt burn my skin or blister, no. but it is hot enough to the point where i cant hold it in that spot because it feels like its going to. its like putting your hand on xbox that had just been run for 10 hours straight
As stated before, the tegra 2 does not produce anywhere near the power dissipation to overheat even when overclocked.
I have to ask again, what is the temperature of the back of the unit?

how would i know what the temp. is?
I heard that sometimes 4K makes the phone overheat but what about under general usage?
My Z gets quite hot after web browsing n stuff and my back panel has lifted near the camera... IDK if the Z1 had this problem or not but i dont want to suck again for a serious problem like this.

Well , what ive noticed so far is when you use the camera it heats up. Even when your just taking pictures, once you use it for a bit it heats up then tells you to close the camera app.

@ SkyS1gn - It is definitely warm, but I wouldn't say it was hot. It also cools down very quickly when you stop what you were doing.

Thanks, i hope sony taught from their fault and the Z2 wont suffer from bakpanel-lifting issue!
for the record my galaxy note (no z2 until tomorrow) gets quite warm when i use it for browsing, gaming etc....... my galaxy s before that got quite warm also..... come to think of it my sisters s4 n her fellas moto razr x get quite warm when they're fiddling with them....... i would be more concerned if i bought a new phone and it didnt heat up during use.
Having said that tho, the back lifting definately doesnt sound right, pix?

Nope its an issue with the Z, idk about the Z1 or Z2 but Z2 hasnt got that plastic strap around the edge of the back like the Z1, Z2 is more like the Z, just the edge and the glass, thats why some pll see gaps...
But im 99.8% sure they fixed the glue with the Z1 and the Z2. Z's nfc springs are a little bit higher than it should be so its constantly pressing the back panel away + considering the heat = made the back panel to lift a bit around the cam area. http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/general/discussionxperia-z-glass-coming-unglued-t2304680

However most people (especially fanboys) would just say that all phones get hot or ridiculous stuff like you can use water to cool the phone since its waterproof. The phone gets rather warm in a few minutes even when you're just browsing, messaging or meddling with the settings. Playing graphics intensive games drive the temperature up really high, to a point that it is hot to touch. I understand that the phone is packed with awesome hardwares and that huge screen in such a slim body, which are probably why temperature gets so high. But when I use the HTC M8 or Iphone 5s for similar activities, they just dont get as hot, and definitely not as fast. However as mentioned, it cools down as pretty quickly too. I feel that this is something Sony can definitely do better in.

I think "hotness" is subjectif. What is hot for you might be normal for me.
When can we speak of overheating in degrees?
Mine gets only up to 31 degree by browsing, games or camera. And not very quick too. And don't forget that iPhone hasn't got very powerful hardware. But we got just up to 23 degree in spring. Where do you live?

It does get hot very easily, thats one of the first things I noticed about this phone. But I have yet to experience any issues as a result of it, so in all I wouldnt say its really a problem you should worry about.
I'm concerned that because the nexus 9 uses almost the same nvidia chipset as the nvidia shield tablet, that the nexus 9 will have overheating problems. The nvidia shield got so hot that it basically cracked the case. Please let me know what your experiences are.

From playing with mine for around an hour, it does get pretty warm but not hot enough to cause concern for me. I have seen tablets get much hotter in the past.
Subjectively, the back of mine feels about as hot as my Shield Tablet (departed). But the side/frame is aluminum, unlike the Shield which was plastic. So I'm not concerned.
Mine got a little warm but nothing hot

Mine definitely gets warm on the top half (holding in portrait) but I wouldn't say hot. Nothing unreasonable...my LG G3 gets warmer/hot.
I think the overheating problems mainly occur when playing graphic intensive games. The GPU (not the CPU) is probably the reason why it gets so warm. I wonder what would happen after a couple hours of playing Trine 2. Overheating probably won't happen under normal usage.
Anybody was able to compare how hot does it get compared to ipad? (especially ipad mini 2)
Mine gets warm, not hot.
Compared to my Shield Tablet, it's not even close.
Mine has not gotten even warm...its been plugged in for 3 hours now...setup up apps, browsed web, played a few YouTube videos fired up a few games..candy crush, slots and what not...nothing graphic intensive. Its maybe a degree or two warmer on top vs the bottom...barely noticeable. My g2 will get really warm,even hot if its charging and the screen is on. Not the case here.

Maybe the battery temp is a better indication of what the internal temp is. The outside could be warm, but the inside could be much warmer. I'm not really concerned about cracked corners like the nvidia shield had with this device, but high internal temp could potentially damage the circuits.
On a side note, it has come to attention that if you press in the middle of the back of the device, there is a lot of flex in the casing. If there is flex when pressing on the back, then there must be a space behind it. Maybe that space was intended to prevent the back of the device from feeling warm. So, it could definitely feel much cooler in the back than it really is inside.
Mine gets randomly hot. Like not even when under heavy load. I was browing the web the other day and it got to 43 C
The area near the rear camera gets warm, however I remember the Nexus 7 getting a lot warmer. I think you can probably run a Google search and find someone concerned about the heat put out by any tablet on the market (iPads included).
It's not something I'm concerned about because these chips are built to withstand a lot of heat and I suspect with future updates they may some refinement with how it runs and certainly when custom kernels start appearing it would be something we'll have a little more control over with having the ability to (hopefully) undervolt and adjust the CPU frequencies.

Just received mine today, when it downloaded and installed the OS update it got really hot, not unlike my Nexus 4 when it's being taxed. Battery drained a lot during that time as well.
I played asphalt8, simple rockets and plague inc for about an hour each, all games that used to set my optimus g on fire, and destroys my g2 battery. I can honestly say my battery took a noticeable hit, but it only got slightly warm. My optimus g used to get too hot to hold and then turn off. My (white 32gb ordered oct 17 delivered this morning) nexus 9 does not get hot, maybe warm like holding someone's hand. I know, this is 100% scientific, but all my other devices have gotten much hotter than what I tried to get this to. /2ยข
Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge stays cool under extended heavy use. COOLEST phone iv'e ever used, even the most demanding games I toss at it, it doesn't go beyond warm.

i got the exynos version and it does get warmed up while gaming .. it doesn't get uncomfortably warm .. but with that heat pipe i assumed there wouldnt be any heating issues.
What temp. would be considered as abnormal ?
and also which app can i download to find out the temp...... if any

Do you have a link you can share? Cuz if anything I've heard that it's the Exynos 8890 is the hot chip.

When using the VR mine for really WARM but not as hot as my s5 can get, sometimes with general use.
Funny thing is that with previous phones, heat seemed to = battery drain, however so far battery seems fantastic for me even when got after using the VR.

Mine is constantly warm around the camera area.
Mine only got hot during initial setup. I haven't ran any games or benchmarks. It's warmer than my MXPE is but I think that's mostly because the MXPE has a bigger, thicker body which dissipates the heat.
Mine warmed up while downloading a ton of movies to the SD card. Ran under some cold water and it was fine from there. lol
Mine ran slightly warm when downloading 20 app's at once, and I wouldn't be noticable if I didn't look for it heh.
No issues with my SD820 heating up. No issues while gaming either.
Runs slightly cooler than Darth Vader's portable life support suit, though not as many flashing lights. You really have to look on the screen when your own eyes.
I've been getting around 80-85f with chrome browsing low brightness but goes up to 95 to 100f with pandora and higher brightness. Does get warm but not too hot.
The first and second day my device was prone to getting warm and got pretty hot during VR use. Today for some reason it remains cool to the touch even after about playing an hour of a 3D game and I used the Gear VR for about 30 minutes and it only got warm. I'm not sure what changed but the difference is really noticeable.
Exynos variant here, been playing Angry Birds 2 for like 15-20mins and the phone was getting quite warm close to camera area. Is that throttling?

I got the s7 edge when it officially releases. First 2 days, lte enabled and default settings. It's get little warm that you can notice it. If I were to rate it 1-10 on warn department, I would say 3, 10 being really warm, borderline hot like HTC m9. 3rd and 4th day, 4G only and default settings. It doesn't get warm at all. Relatively cool. Tested it on my way to work. An hour trip. Playing Clash Royale 5-6 matches, watching YouTube, browsing reddit using reddit sync pro and moderate chrome browsing. Plus, it's only drain 7%.
Tldr Samsung S7 edge is a keeper. Gorgeous design, longer battery life, SD card and quite honestly, I really love the AOD. Wished there were more options and 3rd party notifications.
anyone actually tested the temp using a temp gun? Otherwise, its all just speculation. I'll see if I can find mine to test while playing games or streaming video.

Same here. As in REALY cold to the touch at times, other than when charging.
Speedy and almost impossible to heat up even after long hours of gaming.

If "good shape" means no stalls, lags, freezes, or reboots, probably should. It depends what you plan on doing with it. It gets hot (upper right back corner) when web surfing. Great for videos, though. I don't do games so don't know about that.

When it works, its actually a very nice tablet to use. The issue is that it tends to get hot under the collar very quickly and then freezes meaning that a reboot is needed. It is normally at this point that I tend to launch it across the room or seek retribution in other ways. In testament to its build quality, it left a large hole in the plaster on the wall and came out of it unscathed, likewise, having been bounced off of the floor on numerous occasions and banged against counter tops, it doesn't appear to have suffered anything untoward!!!

Aaaaaaaand, some of us take tablet gaming a little bit too serious. Web surfing and media consumption don't warrant such extremes. Serves me well most of the time. Got some bubbles on the screen in the corner though so...
75 bucks is a good price for it though.
I like the N9 for the most part. The CPU is one of the fastest ARM processors and it renders web sites and PDF files quite well. That's mostly what I want out of a tablet.
It plays games alright, but it will inevitably throttle. It gets hot. It's really too hot of a chip for tablet gaming. This is not unique to the Nexus 9 though. Throttling and resulting erratic performance are pretty commonplace. The Nintendo Switch is an interesting showcase of solutions to that - a fan and low clock speeds for the Tegra X1.
My main complaints about the N9 would be that it really should have 4GB RAM and that the EMMC storage chip seems a bit slow. Slow storage performance is usually the cause of system hitches and stutters. The OS is waiting on reads/writes to complete. I've had lots of tablets/phones like this though and the Nexus 9 is definitely not bad. It's just not impressive when you compare it to a modern upper-end phone.
