This is a development community for the Rezound, not the VZW Warranty Replacement department. The phone has been out 3 freaking days! Quit whining and moaning that you can't do this and you can't do that. If you NEEDED your backups so bad you should have waited until it was posted across the board we had real root. Things will come together, sorry you don't have your convenient tools yet. You wanted to jump on the bandwagon, deal with it until your conveniences are restored. It isn't that difficult to spend a little time restoring everything manually. I did it, and I am sure many others did so too.
Stop crying for a couple weeks, and lets let the Dev's not be discourage by this phone, being that is all you are really doing by stating, "I can't root yet! I am switching to the Nexus!" Stop the bull****.
Agreed. Chances are you bought it in the last few days and you have until sometime in January to switch due to a temporary verizon policy change. Just cool it for the time being.
I believe that only applied to phones bought 15th-29th.

Yeah that's a bummer. I got it ans switch from Sprint on launch day LOL....ahh well I'm not switching anyway. Anyway....AGREED!!

Not a bummer if you have no complaints, lol. Who wants to make bets the complainers pick up the Nexus and try to come back?
Anyways, CyanogenMod said CM9 is due out in ~2months. I didn't see what devices, but I am assuming this will be one to get it quick. About that same time frame ICS should be coming, MIUI goes hand in hand with CM, Big things happening! Not to mention this phone is a pretty big powerhouse without modifying it.
YEAH u make a good point LOL. Ahh cm9 would be great. I'm a MIUI Linda guy tho. No offense to any who are already Herr but I hope we can get the DEVs we need to port things over such as CM and such. I'm very curious if we get on that list. That would be huge for our Forum

amen sister.
i love this phone; yeah there's a couple quirks, but who cares, the phone performs outstandingly and gets the same battery performance, if not better, than my incredible got. that to me is awesome. it's fast, looks damn good, has an amazing screen, and the camera is GORGEOUS. what's NOT to like?
The screen is the biggest slap in the face to iPhone owners! lol, bigger AND better! Crushed another of their reasons why they think Apple products are godsend! I can't keep my hands off this phone, I am still learning Sense too!
Yeah the screen is Incredible. My wifes wants to ditch sprint altogether now and get one herself. Looks like I'm headed back to Verizon.

wait, don't you already have it if you have a rezound?
Not all bad, except you won't have unlimited data. But, just like I stated in the X2 forums a while back, it is all a strategy to make money. They went tiered because they knew they would still draw customers, they have the better network, and now they offer double the data on a faster network with better phones. Eventually we will work our way back to unlimited, or damn near unlimited. Albeit might be more expensive, and there may still be plans under the unlimited plan.
Look like I got across to everyone This is going to be a GREAT community! Nowhere near the bickering of the X2 forum!
Hello,
As a former HTC EVO3D Owner from the "First to Buy" opportunity in June before Sprint sold their soul to get the iPhone and before that an EVO 4G, I gotta say I absolutely am blown away by the Photon. I was quite intrigued by it when it was released, but Sprint staggered the release so that it was past 30 Days between when the 2 Phones were released.
I had so many issues with my 3D that I literally had 4 Replacement Handsets sent. I was finally so fed up that I told them either give me a Photon or I am cancelling.
The one thing I did not want to do is give up my last Annual Upgrade which they offered to move up if I paid $55 due to LTE coming and actually having a real chance of Nationwide availability.
Back to the Photon, while it took about 45 minutes to get used to the UI, I am really liking this phone more and more each day. And the Speaker is absurdly better than the one in the 3D. As in I can finally hear Netflix and all the Music on my Phone.
While I hope there is an official ICS Release, there are obviously ways around it. Moreover, with the vastly better Call Quality, Speaker, and just how much better it works in low signal strength areas, I am pretty much positive I will be getting whatever Motorola LTE device that comes out around June. Hopefully, it will be similar to the Razr.
It is weird, I have been with Sprint since 1999 and one of my all time favorite Phones was the StarTac I had around a decade ago. Unfortunately, my ex GF's Dog took it and digged a hole in the Yard. (found years later) Since then, there have been very few Motorola Handsets. I can only hope Sprint maintains at least cordial relations with Moto.
Cheers,
JJ
Welcome dude! You think its fast now, try unlocking and running CM7/CM9(ics) it will blow your mind. I'm pretty sure it's getting an official ICS update but the ics build we have now is phenomenal even at alpha stage.

Welcome! Hang out! I'm rooted, but not unlocked. Funny Kenny, I had my Evo for a year, I got Photon August 2nd 2011. I have used 4G EXACTLY 3 times!!!
Hello,
My most sincerest thanks again for the warm welcome. I have been with Sprint since 1999 and must say this is my favorite Handset by a Country Mile. Next comes Rooting and all that fun stuff.
I also love that when using ADW EX that the Motorola Widgets are available whereas the HTC Sense Widgets are not. And the difference with 4G staying connected is amazing. I was in Tampa/St. Pete today and the Photon never dropped Wimax whereas the 3D constantly did.
Cheers,
J

Out of curiosity, what don't you like about it?
Not to hijack but I'm totally opposite OP. Coming from Evo4g I think the Photon is a POS...I've had 3 replacements (reboot issues) and the 3rd still has trouble...mind you, all my issues are in heavy roam/no signal areas which I believe to be the factor but these probs didn't exist for my evo.
However, I recently flashed jokers cm9/ics and can vouch for Kenny's claims...this rom is sick as hell and so far my phone feels like a new unit. No crashes or issues yet in my roaming state, I can only cross my fingers at this point.
I'll likely jump ship if the Nexus hits anytime soon.
@cclarck, nothing personal, but do you think maybe it's you? you stated you flashed it, maybe your area does not like your radio? You also stated roaming?
Just saying. I have been reading for @ week on the Nexus, not impressed at all. (and if you have problems with Photon, good luck with the Samsung!)
Me specifically? No I don't believe so...now my photon in relation to my area...yes most likely. As you can see I'm a lurker but I have quite a bit of experience trying new roms/kernels on all my phones but the Photon has been nothing but frustrations to this point. That being said, it's not like there was a disclaimer on the Photon when I upgraded saying that it's radio would be complete sh!t compared to my evo while roaming, all while causing shutdowns requiring a battery pull/plugin.
I'd like to reinforce that cm9/ics so far is phenomenal, but 2 days soak is hardly extensive testing yet...
edit: Oh and I am certainly very scared to go to a Sammy, I think their build quality is the worst and I hate the plastic feel. My main reason for jumping aside from my photon history is wanting that huge screen; and I like the nex over the touch. Sprint needs more phones =(
If you want a huge screen skip the galaxy nexus and wait for the galaxy note. Sprint's definitely getting and that screen is even bigger. If you don't know what the galaxy note is check this out....

Yeah I don't like sammy either but this phone looks cool. I'm not going to get it as my contract expires this Feb. I may move my 2 lines somewhere else don't know yet. Sprints future looks promising with lte and all the hot devices launching but I simply can't wait till 2013 lol. I want to go back to gsm so I can swap sim cards as I please lol. God I hate cdma! I'm thinking att, definitely not t-mobile I worked there previously for almost 4 years. (I hate those bastards)
I've had att and never ever again, I've been through every carrier and they were the most frustrating with dropped calls and such. Unfortunately, my area is predominately Verizon but I missed the grandfathered data so no thanks to that too.
I dunno, every phone has it's fan base that disses on other brands and what-not so I get it. I haven't had Sammy experience since the Incredibad so maybe their build quality is better than I give credit...I def see a love/hate for every brand though, not just sammy.
I was in love with my photon when I first had it, even ignoring all the launch issues and replacements but it all eventually wore me down to never wanting a moto again =(

And it may be GSM/CDMA, who knows. @ the poster before me, yes all phones have their good and bad and you have individuals that talk negative about other phones, but each phone I look up, EVERYONE has a negative comment on Sammy's radios!! Perhaps you may want to look into this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211157
It's a bit of a pain to set up at first but once you do it's worth it. My calls drop all the time in my apartment with Sprint, but not at all using a Verizon PRL.
There's a danger of roaming too much and getting noticed by Sprint, but for most people it seems to take 3+ months for Sprint to notice, and even then you'll more than likely receive a warning letter first.
I've been using this over over 6 months and I've gotten 1 warning letter but when I inquired about it with a Sprint chat rep, he said I was not in danger of being cut.
So YMVM, but it'd help at least short-term.
Hello,
For some reason, I cannot stand Samsung. This extends to their TV's and other Home Theater Components. I am a Moderator on a Moderator on a AV Forum with close to 100,000 Members and find it hard to recommend them.
For whatever reason, I lump them in with Hyundai (I must say they have made huge strides over the past years since the $3,999 Hyundai Excel) Regardless, I tend to prefer the Japanese and American Companies. I know everything is manufactured in China or Malaysia.
Cheers,
JJ
I am ALSO Rooted but NOT Unlocked. My area is Saturated with 4G and I use it ALOT. I have Unlimited Mobile Hotspot (GrandFathered in since I have been a customer since 1997) and use it on my Samsung Galaxy Player5.0 and HTC EVO View 4G (while out and about). I only use WiFi on the HTC EVO View (Did Not want ANOTHER Data Contract) and just Tether to my Photon.
I received a call yesterday from an HTC wanting to discuss a rather critical customer support feedback survey I recently submitted. In the course of the conversation he mentioned the ICS upgrade and I asked him when they expect that to happen. His answer:
"It'll be late May or the second half of this year."
I asked him to repeat it, and whether he had any evidence to confirm that. He said he was sure of the time frame. Make of it what you will, but I've suspected for a while we really got boned in the butt with this one. Give up on an official ICS release in any timely manner.
That's what I figured. When I was researching buying this phone and they said "Late Q1", I was skeptical and said it would probably be more like May. We got confirmation that they were blowing smoke when they announced the Rezound wouldn't be until "later this year".
The CS rep you spoke with seems to align with "later this year".
There has to be a way to get faster updates. What happened to the Google Android Update Alliance?
So basically what he said is sometime this year. That's a pretty big window, so basically we will see an official ICS build within the next 9 months. This is the very reason I root my phone. We already have very stable fully functional ICS builds thanks to our Devs. I don't understand how our Devs can get a great build for us, but yet the "professionals" can't seem to make it happen.

Because they aren't concerned with us getting updates. They just work on the next phone and get around to us if they feel like it.

I'm betting it has something to do with Verizon ,not htc. Id blame Verizon for slowing down any update or rom upgrade. Simply because Verizon is testing it to find all the software bugs and tricks embedded in the ROM. And they are determining what bloatware and/or cripplrware they want to stuff in it before its release. Thats why the date keeps getting pushed ahead. Srnd it back to htc devs after vzw is done. Htc tweaks it more, vzw wants to do more to it...and back to htc yet again... :/
The alliance is a joke.
More marketing bs. Great phone though

I'm still sticking to the summer, but yea, rooting is the way to go.
Even sadder ICS news
http://phandroid.com/2012/03/06/htc-sensation-line-to-get-android-4-0-but-only-sense-3-6/
I think if this is the case with the Rezound rooting will be a must.
Thank goodness for the leaks. They have certainly gotten to the point of being solid and give me most of what I want out of the update. But it doesn't change the fact that Android/Sense 4.0 is ready and working on other phones and they clearly don't have much respect for their previous promises or customers.
I'm sure VZW gets partial blame here, but they are all hurting their reputations together. The extra wait better result in us getting Sense 4! If we just get a bloated official 3.6 I say we get the pitchforks!
Funny, gingerbread with sense 3.5 looks and acts basically like ics with sense 3.6. I tried Joel's sense 4.0 rom and it was pretty cool. This is why we root folks. Never trust the carrier or manufacturers. Stick with the developers!
I'm sure VZW puts HTC through hell with the roms for VZW phones. Definately sucks, but IMO, the longer its put off the more likely we are to get sense 4.0

welcome to retail. HTC/Verizon already has your money. They sold you a phone with whatever software is had on it at the time. They aren't obgliated to update it at all. they do so in order to keep customers happy. its not just HTC either, motorola, samsung, LG, company x; all the same with software updates. Their policy is update the newest first then work their way back. it cost money to develop updates for every single phone model, thats just the way it is. I have learned to not worr or wait for official updates and just use what this great development community has provided to us....4 months early.
the ICS ROMS out right now are honestly magical. Try them out.
I predict that we won't see anything until the "one" is out for at least a month and the buying of that device begins slowing.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.

I've been following these threads but refraining from posting in them .
I understand your point, however, Android 4.0 was released/announced just prior to the release of the Rezound. If potential customers of the Rezound knew they would not be updated for close to another year (likely when Android 5.0 will be out) I'm sure that would've swayed many buyers.
I myself as well as most of us users on here aren't too hurt about this thanks to our awesome Devs but it sucks to know a lot of people dropped some nice coin for phone that HTC/Verizon have obviously not held their end of the deal of "Will receive ICS in early 2012". This was stated in red lettering on the spec list of the Rezound on the Verizon website.

I don't really agree & I'm not trying to argue at all.
My point is that the average VZ customer could care less about updates to a phone that basically worked just fine out of the box.
I am the head of our corporate cell phone account with almost 200 phones & if you said "ICS update" to any of our users you would be met with a blank stare as they wouldn't have the first clue what you where talking about. As long as they can turn on their phones & it functions as it's supposed to, they are perfectly happy with it.

you are def right and i agree. it sucks that consumers are fed lies to sell products. honestly though you have to think of it as a numbers game for VZW.
How many people bought the rezound? 1 million (for ease of math)
How many of those people actually care what OS their phone has? maybe 10%?
of that 100000, how many really know the advantages of ICS vs GB? maybe another 10%?
i mean its a small piece of the VZW pie when you think about it.
plus when the next big HTC phone hits the shelves for sale VZW can advertise is as the "first 4.0 HTC device"
it will be summer before we see this. all i want ice cream for is so the devs can finally get us aosp.

That is exactly the point I was making.
It is only posters to sites like this who really care about things like ICS updates & we are such a tiny fraction of Verizons 100 million customers. If every single XDA poster switched to Sprint tomorrow, VZ wouldn't even notice the hit........
This isn't anything new. The HTC Droid Eris was stuck on Android 1.5 forever. I'm pretty sure Android 2.2 Froyo was out already by the time the Droid Eris got its official Android 2.1 update. Based on the past, I wouldn't be surprised if we see the official release of Jelly Bean sometime before we get the official ICS update for the Rezound. I was also fully prepared for the possibility that we'd have an AOSP port working before we get the official ICS update from Verizon. The Droid Eris already has a mostly working AOSP ICS port and they haven't had an official update since Android 2.1 to base anything off of, so I know its possible with the right amount of time and patience.
Anyways, going forward its very possible we are only going to have AOSP ports for the Rezound, because it is entirely possible at this point that ICS will be the last officially supported version of Android for this phone.

Hehe. Hehehe. Yeah, I remember that happening too. That was cute.
But yeah, honestly, they didn't attach any teeth to this agreement so there's no incentive for any of the manufacturers to honor it.
So been honestly thinking if JB takes til next yr which is pretty much when the new HTC will come out to get to the EVO this will be my last HTC device, I really love HTC and have been with them since the touch pro. Howeva the build quality has seemed to go up immensely. And yet the software quality has dropped. I can honestly say that I have had progressively more n more trouble out of the phones from the OG EVO up. Not to mention how we have to wait so long to get a update. Especially when that update was known and out on a few devices b4 our were released, then they can't tell us if or when we will get it. I mean really even phones released after ours have been verified to be getting it and yet we wait. I'm sry but I have bought my phones off contract and if I'm spending $850 plus for a device I don't want it to be obsolete the day I get it. Some people will argue that ics is not obsolete. But look how long its been out. And key lime pie is Otw. So we are almost 2 os's behind. And they get to select who gets upgrades and when? Didn't I pay them? If HTC don't pick it up I'm afraid my next phone will be the galaxy s4 anyone else feel this way or not chime in I wanna hear thoughts on this situation!

I'm honestly not sure this has much to do with HTC. They intend on getting other One X variants JB at some time this month, which could be a positive sign for the EVO LTE, but it all lies in Sprint's hands, ultimately. That's who you should be pointing your finger at.
I agree totally. With HTC's recent earnings miss, I don't see why they can't see their current "support model" isn't working. If it weren't for the dev's here, I'd be even more pissed. HTC needs to embrace the developers as opposed to working against them by not actively releasing updates for a product that they sold me on. I've stuck with HTC devices since my old HTC Mogul but I'm starting to feel the same way. HTC needs to get their **** together or they'll lose a community of people that have helped keep them relevant over the past 5-7 years.

Everyone says sprint sprint sprint but is it not the manufacturer's that say what device they wanna tweak the os for? Besides if it was sprint that was delaying it why would the s3 already be confirmed to be getting the jelly bean update? HTC says they don't know if they will be updating it. And Idt sprint would hurt their own pockets like that. 2 have 2 flagship phones on the latest os faster and far less problems they would/should be jizzin in their pants for that chance.

Sprint can't work on getting updates out if HTC hasn't given them anything to work with. I point my finger at both of them. A phone that's behind in updates on a network that's behind can destroy what little patience people have left.

I payed more for my phone than I did my laptop or tablet. Yet they get updates damn near everyday. And if android is open source I should be ableto get the updates on anyphone that runs Android as long as the specs are up to par for free correct. Just like linux. So y do they get to choose what we get so they can make money. I mean we do it here. So y can't they. Lol sry just rantin clearin my chest.
Me and the wife love HTC but we both agreed that even though we dislike the build quality of Samsung it may be our next phone just because things get updated and fixed a lot more frequently. Besides our phones stay deep inside great looking cases so how much does build quality mean to us anyway.

Sprint can't work on getting updates out if HTC hasn't given them anything to work with. I point my finger at both of them. A phone that's behind in updates on a network that's behind can destroy what little patience people have left.

The update comes from HTC pending a request from Sprint. If Sprint doesn't request it, it will never come. Once Sprint receives it, they add all of their bloat and send it for testing. After that, you already know what happens.
Either way, I am hoping for an HTC Nexus device based on all these multi-OEM Nexus rumors.

Point taken. Bottom line is that "we" the customer, gets screwed. I would find it hard to believe that HTC and Sprint both "don't know" what people want. HTC makes great phones and the developers help us love them. Developers maximize the potential of our devices but if they're not getting what they need, it's a moot point and I'll probably leave Sprint and HTC altogether when I'm due for an upgrade. I'm sure I'm not the only one either. Patience only goes so far.
Not to mention still can't have caller id tones since last update n they can't fix that. Bs and I don't wanna switch roms cuz something always never works in roms.
have to admit if it wasn't for custom roms and the hard work of devs here I would have tossed this phone by now.

Having been an android owner for the last three years (and an evo owner for the last 2), I've gotten used to the slower updates. It's always been explained away by saying that first HTC has to produce an update, then Sprint has to tweak the update, before we ever get the OTA. I know it's not a solution to the problem presented in the OP, but has anyone noticed that we have fantastic devs for this phone? The roms, kernels, and tweaks are not only being produced on a daily basis, but are frequently updated and provided with fantastic support. I can live with slow manufacture and provider updates as long we continue to have great devs.
Yes, but in a different way. I will not be purchasing another HTC product ever due to their slow update roll outs as well as their locking of the boot loaders. While they finally relented and let people unlock their bootloaders through their website, their previous and current stance on the issue is unacceptable to me.
You got robbed if you paid $850 for the phone, lol.
Everyone always thinks the grass is greener someplace else. If you're not happy with sprint then go somewhere else.
But just know that the verizon Gnex, a Google phone, didn't get the JB update for 2 months after it was released on GSM phones.
Also I don't think KLP has been released yet.

KLP isn't out yet. I never said i was leaving sprint just may leave HTC. for me sprint is the best deal besides pre-paid. if pre-paid got the hottest phones as well. I think the big 3 would be outta biz or would have to lower prices to compete. lol

not really that is what they run off contract. bout $800 plus tax
this phone will probably be the last HTC phone I purchase... unless they change their policy on source and start to release it to dev's faster... it seems like there is a lot more activity for the S3....
If I get another HTC device it will be a nexus. If they dont make a nexus device im not getting it. I love htc build quality, it feels like a real device in my hand, but the lack of updates really turns me off.
Sorry to hear you paid $850 for this mech.. got mine free without upgrading because the 3ds were on backorder when mine broke... and i got that free also...
With an unlocked bootloader I thought we would have alot more roms by now than what we do.....maybe im wrong. Im not criticizing anyone or any developer's. Just thought there would be a wider variety by now. Thoughts???

For one, the phone has only been out for a month and a half for Verizon. I'm not familiar development processes are from carrier versions but I'd imagine you have to specially make a rom based on the device you're using it on. Although, with it being such a popular device around the world that it's only a matter of time before more developers move over to the CDMA version.
Does Verizon and Sprint use the same version of the phone?
yup
thats how all newer phones start out... was same way for my galaxy nexus when it came out...
I think considering the late year release date (devs enjoy the holidays too) plus the additional bootloader lockdown issue that development is coming along nicely. We have 2 great roms that are daily drivers now and from what I see on the other threads another slew in alpha now. This is a flagship phone for sure, which I think makes for a bright future.

It hasn't been the case with any of my Motorola phones even with a locked bootloader. There was always more roms within about 3 days of getting cwm via bootstrap, than there has been on this device. I think a big reason is that not many people have the Verizon variant. I didn't get a GNex, but I did look at the development after a few weeks when I was still considering it, and there was a lot of roms, and mods.
It takes time for all devices. For those of us in Japan using the Japanese Galaxy Note 2, we have only just had root this week! :good:
(Thanks for the help of a few here at XDA). So in time I'm sure more ROMS will be available for the Verizon Note 2 also.

ive owned a few android phones, starting with the droid.... and with as many carriers with so many devices im shocked we have as many as we do.
and lets be honest, how many versions of cmod do we really need.

We are getting a lot more devices, which is probably diluting how many users are running each device. My first Android phone was the Droid X, and it had a ton of development at the beginning and lasted for about 7-8 months before it started to slow down. My other devices had a lot of development right away (but not as much as the X) but start to slow down after just 3 months or so.
Honestly with how awesome this device is, stock. The desire for mods is probably reduced significantly..
I've owned a Samsung captivate and droid x2. This device is so smooth and fluid I am willing to pay postpaid plan prices to have it.. (Was using page plus 55$/month with dx20

Interestingly enough I was thinking the same thing. Coming from Sprint where there are soo many more roms then there are here with Verizon I was surprised to see there was such a difference. The roms developed already are great but there just doesn't seem to be the variety as on Sprint...In my opinion only...Why?

Huh.
Sprint released in October.
Sprint didn't have a locked bootloader.
Sprint has 12334234123 roms that are mostly the same with different kitchen devs running them (this is the main reason).
The reason I think we aren't seeing as much activity is because:
1. People are still recovering from the holiday season and the Note II released during the holiday season.
2. There are some of us that simply don't have time, and have no desire to release a zip rom that is more of the same. Like for me, I only have time to do mods and advise others.
3. Verizon has scared off a lot of talent.
So if anyone has a problem with this, I recommend they jump ship and change to Sprint. Personally, I feel that those who complain about this should suck it up and learn how to do this stuff. They can then proactively help fix the problem.
I think there is enough ROMs

Exactly my plan
i see it this way... the less roms.. the easier it is to choose which rom to flash lol

Wow, observations don't necessarily equate to complaining. People are soo sensitive these days. The truth is, if you are developing this stuff, I couldn't respect you more for doing it. It is something I don't have the knowledge to do. But that doesn't mean that someone who is new to Verizon and used to flashing roms weekly can't question why there is a difference in the participation between the two. You are correct, there are two or three base roms and many variations of them but there "appears" to be more.
I think answer # 3 you gave is what I was expecting to hear and with all the limitations Verizon puts on the phones it doesn't surprise.
So personally I feel....if you don't care to ask why the question is being asked...dont' answer it either...with all due respect.
Keep in mind Vzw took their merry time releasing this phone that those that had to have it first went to other carriers.
