So, i've had wifi issues with my galaxy player 5.0 US model ever since I got it. I thought rooting it and flashing a new kernal and custom
rom would fix it but i've still been encountering the same issues. After I connect to wifi (anywhere) It will randomly turn itself off and then back
on and reconnect, I've set up a static ip on the device and that fixes the problem, but the static ip only seems to work when I connect at my house
and my girlfriends, anywhere else I have to turn off the static ip and just deal with the wifi problem. Is there a fix I don't know about?
Well, this was a well known bug talked about during the first few months of the galaxy player. It was decided it mainly had to do with Belkin routers. One fix for some was to change the router timout. You would need router access to do so.I think it was fixed in the 2.3.6 update. If you could find a custom Rom based on 2.3.6, that might solve it.

Yes and try to re-flash the custom kernel if you use a ROM without a kernel inside (after the first installation), always by CWM; I solved this problem with 2.3.6 GB custom rom based or 2.3.6 stock ROM + custom kernel.
Me Too !!
I too had the same problem with the stock SGP 5 and my Verizon FIOS ActionTec router. It works fine with a static IP address, and without it, it would drop the connection. Changing the router timeout did not work for me. I've concluded that certain devices don't play well with each other. In my case, it was the SGP5 and Actiontec router. By the way, my girlfriend's IPAD has the same problem (and same solution) with the Actiontec router, so it's not just a problem with the SGP5.
Hello all, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 with Stock 4.1.2 unrooted and baseband version I9300DXEMB1. The problem I have is when I try to connect with my home WiFi from my room, it says Authentication Error Occurred. I have to be directly infront of the router then it'll connect and allow me to load webpages.
If I stand in front of the router and connect, It will get connected without any problems but as soon as I return back to my room or any other place that is more than 3 feet away from the router, it wouldnt load any webpages or anything that requires an Internet connection. Then when I toggle WiFi off and on again, the authentication error occurred problem will be back. It's like my phone can only connect and load webpages when it is 1cm in front of the router. Does anyone here have any suggestion on how to help me? I'm pretty sure that it is not my router's problem because my computer and Galaxy S4 in my room can connect just fine and load webpages just fine. I've tried searching the Internet for solutions but have not found anyone with the exact same problem with range/signal strength hence I started this thread.

Rooted the phone and installed Siyah kernel. Problem still persist. Any other possible fixes? Continued my search and found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/galaxy-s3-wont-connect-to-wifi-t1779535 Same problem with what OP is experiencing. (Post #10)
I once had the same problem and fixed it by deleting the .cid.info file in /data.

I did the exact same thing and still no improvement. Could it be a hardware issue?. I've tried rebooting router, forgetting network, turning off Wifi power safe mode in *#0011# menu but to no avail

Suggest wipe phone install stock rom and test .
If it connects to other routers/ wifi its your router a problem .
I had these kinds of problems with two stock ROMs, do not remember the exact versions, but when I upgraded the problems were gone. That was while using the exact same Yank kernel, so it doesn't seem kernel related. It is a very annoying bug though! But upgrading ROM will fix it, I know for a fact that GNA5 doesn't have this bug.
Have you tried using wifi on other places on the same phone?

Since I saw that lots of people have the same problem. I like many other, I have done everything said here, and all over the web.
Here is what I did to fix my problem...
1 - Check if you have any special char on the wi-fi SSID like "!,@,',ã,á,~,ç,ã" etc...
and Remove it.
2 - On your router check if you have ip adress ranged configured like: 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150, and change it to the wide range: 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254
This two steps solved my problem after I have tried everything stated here and over the web
I just registered to share this and hope to help someone.
Sorry for my bad english...

The thread also highlighted using static IP to solve the issue.
Plus, you can try to change the router transmission channel to a lower number and see if it works.

Thanks for the reply, hard resetted the phone back to everything stock and tried 2 different stock firmwares but still no luck. I also went to format /data and cache in stock recovery just to make sure but still same problem.

Yeah, I'm suffering from OCD and just to make sure the bug doesn't carry over to the next ROM i flash, I formatted my phone through recovery before flashing the .tar firmware in ODIN. And I tried 2 different firmwares and still same thing. Now on MF6 stock 4.1.2 and trying to avoid stock 4.3 because of Knox bootloader.

I've tried other Unsecured networks around my area. Same problem. Very sure it is not my router problem as my other phone and computer can connect just fine and even getting at least 20mbps speed. This S3 can only connect when I'm physically beside the router.

Thanks for suggestions, I've also tried Static IP and checked my router settings and that it doesnt have those punctuations in the SSID and also the start and end IP is pretty wide from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.253 (I don't think that 1 difference from .254 could make a difference could it?) I'm really starting to believe that It's a hardware issue. I'm probably going to contact a person to diagnose the phone tomorrow. Maybe it could be a malfunction of the WiFi chips in the phone.

If there is authentication error then that means that the phone can detect the wireless network so the hardware seems ok. Did you try to change the router channel? And even try changing the transmission from a/b/g/n to "G only" or "N only".

That's exactly what I thought too. Why can't it connect if it can detect the network? And I've since tried changing channels only for it to return to the same result, authentication error. And my router settings do not have an option to change the radio type. I can't remember exactly where but it might be Android forums or something (read too many different forums over the past few days) and this guy said that maybe it was some power management failure thing. I'm not an expert with hardware and can't provide any explanation or theory. Maybe there's some other component that manages the power to use that'll enable the phone to receive data from the router and that thing malfunctions while the main wifi chip still works that explains why I can still detect wifi networks?
[Edit]I'm also thinking that maybe because this Imaginary power management component inside the phone is malfunctioning/not receiving enough power, that's why when im in a room different from where the router is, i cannot connect because the phone isn't receiving enough power to validate the data from the radio waves and also because when Im standing beside the router then can load webpages just fine because the Signal strength is high and probably the radio waves from the router is emitting high energy so the power management component doesn't require as much energy to receive data compared to when Im in my room. Something like the router shouting and your phone needs a certain amount of energy to hear the voice from the room otherwise you cant but if you're standing beside it you can hear it no matter what. (This is just my theory and what Im thinking the problem is. It is not an explanation but just my opinion. This information could be totally wrong for all I know.)

@Hazerm, can you try WPS setup if your router supports it?
On your phone: Settings > WiFi > Menu > WPS
Rebooting the router is also recommended. Maybe you can also try changing the security on the router to WPA/WPA2

Yep, WPS is supported and enabled on my router. Use it cause I was too lazy to retype my password everytime i flashed a firmware on the phone haha. And same thing. when I try to connect using WPS, the phone (in my room or any location 10cm or more away from router) doesnt react even after pushing the button on the router. But if I were to stand beside the router, WPS works without any problems.

No improvement, unfortunately The progress bar just crawls to the end and the phone just says WPS failed. This was approximately 1 meter away from the router, I have to be less than 1 metre from the router to get a connection. Btw, router was rebooted several times and Security has always been WPA/WPA2-PSK, not very interested in changing the security to other types like WEP. Just not very trustable

I can understand that this is very frustrating for you. Believe me, I've had issues with phones and wifi
Ok, so I found 2 short threads that you could read:
Link 1
Link 2
Summary:
- try the steps in Link 1
- Change phone frequency from 2.4ghz to 5GHz (had this option in Omega ROM 4.3-based)
- 2 users report that the issue is fixed in CM9 (or even other CM roms)
- Might be a mainboard issue after all.
PS: Surprisingly, some of the people reporting the issue have used Omega rom in the past and faced the issues since then. (I didn't have any issues though so I cant blame the rom)

Don't worry about Knox, it is not present in 4.3, so you can just flash GNA5 and be done with it! I do recommend Nova or Apex launcher though, way smoother!
For all the other people here, this is a known bug with certain routers that are not 100% compliant with the WiFi standard and therefor do not confirm the handshake. I have had these problems with certain ROMs as well (cannot exactly remember which ones) and after flashing another ROM (at the moment I am on GNA5) Samsung fixed it, while it is not even their issue, the issue/bug lies within the routers that pose problems.

Really? Because with the Galaxy S4, late 4.2.2 firmwares and all 4.3 and above firmwares had new Knox bootloaders which means no turning back to old 4.2.2 ROMs and also the Knox 0x1 flag which to my knowledge is not resettable at the time of this writing.

S3 wifi not working
(repost this to this section, adviced from xda assist)
I just purchased second-handed Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300 (international ver) to replace my old Samsung Galaxy Mini (GT-S5770). I purchased this cuz the price tag on one of local stores is just too tempting me to buy one, plus, giving me free true leather phone case! (though my target was Acer Liquid Z410, but not available on local stores and i dont know how to buy online as well)
The phone conditions, well, do have some minor scratches at the sides but the previous owner was middle-age man, and im not so picky with that detail.
The phone is great, well, except, the WiFi isnt in good condition in normal uses. (means, i can still uses them. details in below)
The S3 properties,
Android 4.3
International ver, GT-I9300
16 GB ver (which i found out some cases with unbootable S3, with 16GB ver only)
unroot
all related to network setting (includes mobile network, Bluetooth network, WiFi) is in default
The problem is, the WiFi.
The phone does detects WiFi hotspots or access points from far (in fact, it can detect my neighbour's home wifi even though is quite far, well, maybe around 20-30m, well, the signal was weak though).
SInce my home wifi is hidden, i pre-set the wifi. but, it wont even connect or even detect my wifi. My Internet TV with WiFI Direct do detected though (no internet connection since it wont host internet to devices who connect to the TV)
But, when i place my S3 like below 700cm range, my S3 detects my wifi and connects like normal devices. But when it get like further than 1m, the WiFi does not receives any data at all and after a while, the WiFi disconnected.
After i bought this phone, i hard factory reset my S3 (before reset, i didnt test WiFi and also from my uncle's advice cuz my phone seems a bit slow, well, he used to have S3). I didnt had a chance to test WiFi until i got home and tried to connect my WiFi.
I've tried many method i found online, (again, the WiFi only works if i put my S3 side by side with the access point/s)
Reboot router (I always reboot them cuz the router sometimes bugging) = not working.
Forget the network in S3 and preset. = not working
Tied with static IP address (connecting to my hidden network)(with google DNS) = not working
Enabled unhidden, open wifi profile on my router, try connect. = not working)
Connect to my TV's WIFi with WPA security = not working (tried to connect but just fails)
Tried *#0011#, Wifi, turn off power saving = not working
Things i havent tried,
reset again the S3
revert to factory firmware (actually, i tried but Kies 3 just wont work at all... it said that the device cannto be initiated or similar... so, the S3 didnt do anything)
using Odin to revert to stock factory rom
using Odin to update to unofficial kitkat rom
before im going to use Odin, which i dont ever done before, do you think that reset this phone to factory setting will fix this problem?

if you mean router channel, the N radio, G radio and B radio,
sorry,
mine only supports G. (or maybe B and G. but for sure, no N)(dont forget that i did tried with my tv as well, since my tv has wifi direct but also be connected with usual wpa security. by the way, im pretty sure the tv radio channel supports b, g and n, and usually, they uses N channel for devices that supports N channel).
if thats not the case, then what do you mean?
Is anyone facing issue of Random internet drop (both WiFi & LTE) and it doesn't connect until you restart the phone (works everytime) or toggle WiFi/Data (works sometimes)
This keeps happening to me for a long time now and happens across the ROMs as far as i remember. I'm on MiRoom 11.0.5 for now but had same issue on Stock as well as Custom ROMs in past. Persist on Stock kernel as well as custom kernel
Mostly happens on waking device after sometime so i guess radio devices are not waking properly that's why above work around works
In MIUI i already tried toggling battery scenario options (attached) to disabled but no help

If its happened with almost roms which you had tried, so i think its because of the hardware. I dont hope so. Try change ur vendor and firmwares.
I made similar observations with other manufacturer's phones. The following measures could solve those problems:
LTE:
Temporarily try to exclude LTE an change your preferred network mode from 2g/3g/4g to 2g/3g. Network speed should be fine for most tasks.
I have the impression that some network provider limit their lte/4g infrastructure to gain ressources for 5g preparations ...
Wifi:
Applies to 2.4GHz.
Does your router have an option to provide channels 12-13 and is it activated? If so, turn it off and see if there is a change in networking behavior ...
Those channels are not tolerated in some countries and could be insufficiently implemented in the router's or phone's software.
5GHz
If you live near a hospital or a military base try to deactivate the extended channels. They get temporarily automatically deactivated and prioritized for some public or infrastructural institutions ...
Good luck!
