Just purchased a Galaxy S4. When I recieved the phone I did an update to Android 4.3. I then tried to root it using CF Auto Root and Motochopper. Both tools failed and I received the following error:
Security Notice: An attempt to access a secure area on your phone has been blocked.
I think the error is coming from the KNOX app, but can't disable it or clear the data. Anyone know of a work around?
I don't believe those rooting tools you mentioned work with our S4...not yet anyways...There is no root method in the US that has been proven to work...you can use VROOT... If you don't mind a Chinese superuser apk

You needed to root before you updated to 4.3 now you have to wait.
At the moment there is no publicly-known way to root your phone unless you're rooted on MI1 and use the persistence option in supersu. Sorry buddy, you're going to have to wait it out.

Since you've done this - especially trying CF Auto-Root, please try this so we can learn something from what you tried.
Start your phone in download mode - power it off, then power it up by holding the volume down, home, and then power buttons. Hold power until the phone vibrates, then let power go. You'll get a message starting with "Warning!!" about a custom OS. Press volume up to continue.
What does the line "KNOX WARRANTY VOID" say? 0x0 or 0x1?
Once you've read that, hold power down for 10 seconds to restart normally.

Those tools do not work.
On 4.2.2 MI1, root_de_la_vega was the method.
On 4.3 MJ7 there are no known working root methods.
KNOX isn't preventing root.

As stated above, there is a root method that works for MJ7 but some believe there's a risk in using it. Others like myself have done it regardless and were successful.

There is no safe and reliable root method. The root is buried in a Windows executable of questionable origin. Numerous threads telling people to use it and posting the link have been closed. I know those methods exist, but I won't take the chance on anything where I can't peek under the hood. Why not post the source if nothing strange is going on?

Open the development forum for this phone here.
Then, on your phone, use Settings/More/About phone. Read the "Build number". The last 3 characters are how we describe what version your phone is using.
Now, in the development forum, in the "Search this forum" put the word "Root", a space, and the build number.
For example, "Root MI1".
Look for threads on rooting. For example, "How to Root your Verizon Galaxy S4 (Builds: MDK, ME7, MI1)"
or "Saferoot: Root for VRUEMJ7, MK2, and Android 4.3".
One of those two threads will point you to ways to root your phone. Using Kingo or Vroot is really a bad idea.

I can't find any threads on this device but it is a really good phone and it was just on sale for Black Friday at Walmart.
I have tried everything to root this phone but to no avail. From what I can see, this phone is identical to the Galaxy Stellar except it is for Verizon Prepaid. Any ideas?
I have the same curiosity!
I forgot some details. I have tried the Bin4ry root tool and DebugFS. Both gave me "Permission Denied" errors which seems to indicate that this phone has a new security patch to work around.
I finally found the solution. Use Cydia Impactor. I can't post a link but just google it.

If you have received the MK2 patch and lost root or just now thinking about rooting your Legend, There is still a way.
It's called Safe Root. It's designed for the S4 but it works on the Legend just fine. I failed to do restore root when the patch went to my phone, I consequently lost root, tried to root again with Cydia and V Root, and they both failed. After going through the search process again, I found Safe Root here:

When I connected my phone via USB it initially was "Connected as an installer". Running the saferoot script in this mode didn't work as it would revert to MTP mode midway through. Putting the connection into MTP mode before running the saferoot script worked like a charm.
Thanks to all involved in making this happen and finding out that it works for the Galaxy Legend.

I have a samsung sch-I200pp factory os, trying to get familar w drop box to help out where I was having the same problem. Tips?
Prepaid to postpaid
I ended up getting a Samsung Galaxy Legend, but of course it is a Prepaid phone and I'm on postpaid. Does anyone know by chance, if I root this phone, is there a way to reprogram it or unlock it from prepaid so I can use it on postpaid? Thanks for your help...There's gotta be a way, right? It's just unlocking it, I think all Verizon does is put in a code. Thanks in advance!
Anyone with a rooted SCH-i200PP can please provide me with a copy of the /system/etc ??
I have been searching all over to find any information on this new kitkat update for the Note 2. I haven't found much. I think the main thing I found was Knox 2.0 or whatever. Is it possible, or is anyone working on a way to at least get root back on here? I didn't do the update yet, but it's bugging me. I would like kitkat and I like this phone, but samsung/verizon locking this thing down is driving me nuts. To the point that I want to sell this phone. So yeah, is anyone aware of any information on the 4.4.2 update and the possibilities to root it at least. I don't even care to install ROMS.

Yeah this is unfortunate. I would try it if I could flash back to 4.3. Has anyone attempted that? I would gladly chip in and help with this, but I'm new and don't know much about rooting and what not. If there are people working on it I would like to find them.
So... I can confirm that this root does not work for the VZW Galaxy note II running the latest update 4.4.2 (ND7). I tried it several times. Not sure if I am doing anything wrong, but from what I gathered, its pretty straight forward. Just run the app. Also, I can tell you that once you download the OTA you WILL NOT be able to go back to a previous version. I tried to Odin back to MJ9 4.3 and that failed. So, essentially, once you do the kitkat update, you're screwed, and stuck. I can't root, can't go back now. Hopefully someone else can figure this out. Or chime in?
Please try these steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784138
Rooted wife's S4. Ran towelroot. Tried the play store supersu but it couldn't install su binaries so I thought it wasn't rooted until I tried an app that needed root. It got root via supersu even tho it kept complaining about binaries. I then followed the steps in that post and the phone is now rooted with safestrap.
Also try app called root checker from play store.
Towel root does not work. The phone just reboots almost immediately after pressing make it ra1n. Once it boots back up I have checked with root checker. I am not root. Tried it several times. It appears that the exploit gets past the enforce SELinux but for some reason it doesn't on this phone. Or maybe it's Knox that is knocking it down and rebooting the phone.

after reading the thread on towel with the drastic high usage is disappointing. Im seeing now where someone suggested puttting SuperSU on before the the towel exploit .. however it questionable. RIght now most talk seems to steam from shutting off knox which seems to be the issue.
Unfortunately putting supersu on before you use the towel exploit does nothing. Supersu needs root in order to run or do anything. And even so. I ran the exploit several times. First time with with supersu. Second time with out. Then I reinstalled the latest and ran it again. Still nothing. Phone just reboots and is unrooted. Also, you can't disable Knox with out root. Whether that be from supersu disabling it or freezing and/or uninstalling Knox files. You need root in order to do these things. I ended up emailing geohot a few days ago about it, but he never got back to me. Like I said I am willing to try things and help on a project. But, I am no programmer.

I will post a snippit of my log on here for anyone to see if they can make sense of it. Hoping Geohot or someone can respond and shed some light on this, as to why this doesn't work for us, and if it can. After the last line the phone just reboots, no root.

It's unlikely to brick but I don't even want it to trip the Knox flag, let alone bricking!
My main focus as of now is I527M (Canadian variation). I can say that I527M uses logic board of I527, so I'm guessing it's just a matter of software issue that people are having so much trouble rooting I527 at all.

Hello all, I found a few articles that lead no where, Then I saw this forum talking about using Package Disabler. Download it from the google play store. Kill any process looking like Knox Icon. One will not allow it as Package Disabler will need Admin access to your phone and remove Knox Admin privileges, Disable last Knox Package. Then Boot into Download mode with Odin 3.09 on. Root your phone as normal, except for the Reboot automatically option. Uncheck that feature as you want to boot into Bootloader first. Once your into the CW custom recovery or the recovery that comes with your choice of rooting, Install latest version of SuperSU. Finish and boot back into Android. Get Root Checker to verify or Titanium Backup. I used Titanium Backup to un install everything related to Knox. No more Nagging Knox popping up and phone is rooted.

Well, rooting SGH-I527M was possible and pretty simple to be honest. What I wanted to achieve was to root it without tripping Knox.
I'm sure your Knox flag is tripped, right?
I have root!!! I527 4.4.2
Kingroot latest version 4.1.0.249 (From androidxda) successfully rooted my phone. Knox didn't get tripped until I tried to do a custom recovery on my own, which admittedly, I don't know what I'm doing. But other than that, it did disable knox and worked perfectly. I do have screenshots, but it won't let me post outside links because I have less than 10 posts.

That would be a no too. the bootloader was changed when the S4 was upgraded to OC1
and it seems to be the same for OF1 blocking downgrade to OC1 as well.
check your current firmware version. if you're on OC1 try to do kingroot again, as that one is a hit or miss, but OF1 it can't do currently.

You need to use kingroot on windows desktop from what I heard. it also seems to be a hit or miss and might need multiple attempts.
Can you NOT hijack my thread????
And my buildnumber is LRX22C1545VrRUGOF1.
So,,,I guess rooting my device is not possible.
Can I do it own my own, as I said in title? Without programs like Kingo root etc.
I saw people doing it using command window, TWRP, etc etc

okay, here's the thing
i soft bricked my verizon s4 couple of days ago trying to downgrade from OC1 (5.0.1) to MDK (4.2.x) via Odin. before doing that i tried various root methods via pc , king root & towelroot apk , king root desktop, none of it worked. but after i flashed the stock OC1 via odin to recover my device, the first exploit i tried to root was Kingroot desktop app (it was all in chinese i used google translator on android) and it worked! i replaced the knigroot app with supersu using terminal ( http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html ) . though you cant flash any custom recoveries on OC1 . i hope if this is any help.
PC KingRoof worked afted enabling debugging mode and also changing the USB cable.
0F1 can be rooted
The kernel can be downgraded from 0F1 to 0C1, flashing with Odin. (Search for that....) Success is shown if the DATE on the build goes from July to March. It will still say "0F1" but don't let that worry you. From that point I got frustrated with Kingroot language barrier and used MobileGo program (on PC, with 15-day trial period) "one-click Root" option. After that the kernel can be flashed back to 0F1. (You don't have to, but if not you keep getting annoying notifications: "Unauthorized actions have been detected, etc")
I also use the desktop kingroot app to root my gs4 because wondershare does not work on my pc

Huge thanks to vadosnake for discovering this !
It's been a wait of 2 years, and King root has finally achieved root on this device. This method was tested on the Lollipop firmware, and others have said it works on KitKat as well. To root the G850A, follow these steps:
1.) Download the two APKs provided below, which we'll need for later
2.) Enable Unknown Sources by going to Settings, then Security, and the option should be right there
3.) Now install KingRoot 4.81. A message will pop up saying that the app is malicious, but just click "Install Anyway"
4.) Now enter the King root app and click Root. The phone will reboot, but that is normal. Go back into the app again and the process should continue until it's complete. Voila, your phone is now rooted. However, we will be replacing KingRoot with SuperSU.
5.) Install the second APK called SuperSume. After it's done, click the big green button, give it root access, and it will replace KingRoot with SuperSU in 1 minute.
6.) Go into the Play Store and update SuperSU. After it's done updating, go into the app and it will pop up with a message saying to update the binaries. Click continue then "Normal". DO NOT CLICK TWRP/CWM, OR IT WILL SOFTBRICK YOUR DEVICE.
7.) After that., you're done. You now have root with SuperSU.
Please make sure to show this to AT&T Galaxy Alpha users. Especially developers, so we can get some roms
Did anyone try this? Why does King Root need internet access to root? I'm afraid to turn on the internet in case it tries to steal data.

It needs Internet access to search in their database for a root solution.
I got SuperSU to install, but it can't update the binaries. It says "Installation failed! Please reboot and try again." after trying to update the binaries. The Root Checker app did confirm that it was rooted.

For now, I tend to leave the app closed, and just wait until root prompts appear for root apps
Yeah, I'm doing that too.

No Luck
I just ran the included 4.8.1 and online 5.0.1 versions, neither worked. So I tried the 4.8.1 a few times (including restarts) and the Super-SuMe anyway, but it didn't do anything past "Preparing environment" for 20 minutes.
Additional note, the 4.8.1 seems to have problems in general. After trying to root and failing, it'll continue using 80% of my cpu on some other processes within it's directory (mostly Schrodinger).
I'm running Android 5.0.2 (G850AUCU1BOC7), Kernel 3.4.0-4486597, Build LRX22G. It's the last update ATT gave us.

Same, tried both 4.8.1 and 5.0.1, neither worked. Same android and baseband version as yours.
Thanks so much for this. I'm curious exactly which version of Lollipop on the g850a this was tested and working on? Was it specifically 5.0.1 or 5.0.2 something like that? I just want to make sure I can follow it exactly so it works.
Root access was lost after a couple of days. I'm on 4.4.4.

Well this is strange, I followed this exact tutorial about 1 month ago and everything worked fine, now the app just freezes and after 5 minutes gives off a "Root Fail" message. I'm still running v4.8.1 on the app and still running on the KitKat firmware. This makes no sense at all.
Edit: The phone is no longer supported by Kingroot
Hey guys, sorry for not replying, my internet has been down for the past two weeks . It seems that everyone is having problems keeping root after a while. I might not be a developer, but here's my advice: Once root is obtained, do what you want to do (ie. change emojis or install ViperAudio), then don't touch the SuperSU app until some more skilled developers put this root to full use . I'm sorry for not being more useful, but I just want everyone to know that this device isn't dead. What we need right now is something like SafeStrap for some some-what custom roms.
Any one having issue getting this to work?

Yeah, Kingroot pulled support from it after people started using supersu-me to get supersu on their devices instead of kingroot. Well, to me, it sounds like a jealousy problem on Kingroots end. It's not like everyone is buying the pro version of the app. Their main source of money is ad revenue. They also pulled support from the Galaxy S5 and many other devices mainly because of people using supersu-me. Kingroot has got to get the stick that is in it's butt right now out ASAP. A 'friend' of mine literally sold his S5 because it couldn't be rooted anymore, and i'm thinking about selling my G850A because it can't be rooted anymore.
Just to clarify this, there's absolutely no way on the internet that the G850A can be rooted, ever?

Not anymore. It only had root for like 1 month then Kingroot removed support, you can blame them. Unless someone is exploit something so we can have root back, there is no way to root this phone anymore. I know, it sucks, just like the Kingroot developers, but that's just life.

Hi
Im doing that and 100% complete but i check root by root check not request from super user
Solution found!
Hi guys. I think I found the trick. Just disable Internet connection (Mobile data and WiFi) just before lunching kingroot app this would evade the app from "searching the best root solution" which is "nothing found".
I used the exact same files uploaded in the OP and it works great, including the supersume part.
Good luck.
