Potential Buyer in need of some answers. - G2 General

Hello everyone.
I'm currently using my Sony Xperia Z but will be able to get a new phone on a contract with T-Mobile Germany in december.
I've read that this phone is the king of battery life. It's very important for me, as on my XZ i can barely get 4 hours of screen on time, even gimping it by downclocking, disabling stuff, using the lowest brightness possible etc.. It's driving me nuts.
1.
So, how is the battery life (SOT) using about 20-30 % brightness and LTE? Will i be able to get more than 4 Hours of SOT ? I don't play games, however i read alot and watch alot of youtube videos. The basic stuff.
2.
I don't like the LG UI, so i'm planning to use roms such as CM or AOSP based roms. Do i need to unlock the bootloader to flash CM just like on the Xperia Z? I've never used a different android phone except for the xperia arc, which uses the same procedure as the Z.
And would i be able to get the same battery life as on stock or is there some sort of LG software that optimizes battery?
3.
Hearing from friends that have owned LG phones in the past, is that updates from LG were kind of non existent. Is that still the case?
4.
The last thing would be the buttons on the back. Is it hard to get used to them ?
Thanks in advance.

1 SOT for me is easily in the 6-8hr range in a daily basis.
2 A T-Mobile phone will be easy. Just root and install recovery. Battery life on CM is comparable to stock.
3 To early to tell...
4 buttons on the back feel natural and easy to get used too.

6 hours ? Wow.
Anyway, that g2 would be the international? Version. LTE Bands are the same on all carriers in germany.

1. 6 hours easy at 30%.
2. Easy. The LG UI on the G2 is actually nice. Quote customizable with some awesome proprietary features. Coming from previous LG phones I have flashed, I feel no need to on this one.
3. They exist, they are just slow. It does happen at least.
4. They just feel right (with audio slider in notification for random quick things), wouldn't want to go back to side buttons.
The phone is just awesome IMO. Still works not trade it for any.

[Q] SGS 2 or L9?

Hey guys, is there anyone among you, who owns both phones? What I expect is simply a fluid experiance (mostly browsing, xda, music, fb, whatsapp,...) and most important: being able to go a full day, with a lot of screen on time, because i really text a lot so which of those 2 phones would you all go for? Oh i gotta add, I can get a L9 for free with my contract and the SII would cost around 100€ (around 130 $).
Thanks in advance

i can say one thing amoled is good for texting (my experiance) i had a old zte blade amoled version with cm7 and with a black sms app (only 2g and data on) 5% hole from 8h till 12h in class texting at end of day at home whe i go to bed hole evening texting girl friend 70% noting else then sms
so i thing galaxy s2 with amoled and a good black back ground in texting app should last a day.
the lg l9 i text thehole day with some girls. humm on 2g wifi i could hold it till evening. hole day. but yeah i also go on the web. fb. so if i'm awake a 10 am go to bed 12pm it may have 10% left.
but on 2d without wifi it's shorter and 3g veven less.i found out texting eats more battery then internet browsing.i still think amoled is best for texting, but i dont have the sgs2 or any samsung anymore. but a friend had sgs1 i had a custom rom gb with black sms app 5h screen on with some fb. i was shocked. later i installed JB Gamer edition. screen on tim 2-3h mainly because sms app would go in black so was white... and white killes battery on amoled faster then black^^
i wanted the sgs2 but was out of stock... so i toke the l9 wanted to have dual core noting less.
still l9 is a mid end phone, the sgs2 was once a high end phone. so is still better. auto brigness, gorila glass, mhl out, otg, 8mpx. things the L9 hasn't
ps:
if you get a galaxy s2 get the real one not the sgs2 plus. the real 1.2ghz x2 cpu, mali400 gpu, 16BG
u have the other one with same cpu 1ghz x2 and gpu(powervr540) same as the LG L9 (no the best one). or the sgs2 plus has a 1ghz x2 but with a broadcome IV gpu, 8gb. also not the best one. dont know why the [email protected] they made 3 versions guess cheaper. the old one is still better.

Well the first I d do would of course be, installing a custom ROM I d never live with the stock ROM, or only with a heavily tweaked one, but I could also make one on my own

Stock ROM on an l9 should last you a full day. Even with the new jelly bean ROM and with GPS on my phone last all day with moderate use. If you like trying out new Roms with lots of features then go for the s2 it has worse battery life but better development support. The l9 might be dead with support but having jelly bean is nice

Well so far custom ROMs have serious problems which make them quite unusable. It's echo during calls or mute calls. Noone knows why this happens. mikegapinski made MIUI and AOSP on stock kernel with all stock audio files but it still happens. PACMAN by adamz667 and official CM have the same problem (bug reported in jira a month ago but still nothing changed). Some people have kernel panic without a reason too with modded kernels.
I''ve got both (but mine is sgs2 t989) and I think sgs2 is more stable and smooth. I also like l9, but if you have to choose go for sgs2.

I've had the S2 and moved on to L9. The problem with S2 is its display, which consumes a lot of battery, and even more under direct sunlight (100% brightness). Also, because it is SAMOLED PLUS, the display will most probably get burnt really fast - I've had 2 GS2s, once had like half a year and the display was already slighly burnt, the other one was used for almost 2 years and the display was burnt really, really badly.
On the other side, the battery can last very long, if you don't use your phone at all - just for calls and texting. But who buys GS2 just for calling?
So I got myself an L9 and I am very, very satisfied. The stock firmware is really fast and LG also added some very good features. I've had custom roms on every phone I had to the day, but I really see no reason to flash the L9. It is smooth and has everything that I need. Battery life is also great. I've been abroad the past week and you can imagine, how often did I use my smartphone - GPS, Wifi, browsing the internet, listening to music, playing games, taking pictures, everything with maximum brightness - outdoors. I've had absolutely no problem, or no need to worry about my battery. When I came home after 13-14 hours each day, there was still 30ish percent of battery remaining.
However, there are two cons of the L9: It doesn't have brightness sensor, so you need to tinker with it. It's not a big deal, since LG includes a brightness slider in the notifications. Another one is the GPS. It takes very long to get a fix, and it usually doesn't hold the signal for very long. I think this is repairable, I just need to finally get myself root privileges. Oh yeah, here comes the third one, L9 doesn't root as easily as S2 does.
So overall, I was satisfied with both, but will keep the L9, if I manage to fix the GPS. Otherwise, it seems like maybe S4 Mini for me.

My Huawei tablet won't. My pna surely has the best gps receiver, but without a-gps capability it also fails.

About the gps, there are always tweaks for it and i also hardly ever use it... but did you guys already play with the settings in hidden menu? I guess you could see quite an improvement, if you add other gps servers and use lto or whatever it was called but thats too far off for now... well i really start to think, that your community will soon be able to count on me it's simply supercheap, looks good and got a grear battery backup, as far, as I can tell till now and maybe me and some of my friends will even be able to fix some bugs on your custom builds thanks a ton already guys and if there is any more criteria, that comes to your mind, just keep me posted!

The Test of Time?

Now that this phone has been out for over a year, does anybody have any complaints?
How's the battery life?
Has it, or does it ever randomly freeze?
Anything you hate about it now that you've been using it for some time?
Lastly, I found this phone and the Nexus 4 new for around the same price range, the Nexus 4 being around $20 more expensive. Aside from the removable SD card on this phone and LTE support, and the potentially removable battery on the Nexus 4, are there any other differences? If you had a choice to go with either phone once again, and neither the SD card, LTE support, nor battery being an issue in making your decision, which would you go with, and why? I believe the only other difference would be the Android support, with the Nexus 4 running 4.4.2, and the Optimus G running 4.1.2.
In other words, my friend is stuck between making a decision between the two and doesn't know which to go with.
Lastly, can you root to 4.4.2 using the stock kernel?
Thanks!
I've had mine since November 2012. I've been running custom aosp roms since then. I do not get freezes, but I do occasionally get hot reboots every few weeks. No, you can't use stock kernel on 4.4.2 or any other aosp rom. Your last question doesn't really make any sense. The battery comes out exactly like the n4 battery comes out. I get 12-72 hours between charges with 2-5.5 hours of screen on time depending on what I do with the phone. I am still pleased with it and unless I break it I will not be upgrading until next winter.

I would say, all things considered (and I've got an E973 without expandable storage) that the OG, especially now with all the AOSP ROMs available, is like a jacked up N4. We get official LTE, more storage, and because of the cap keys we get more screen real estate. I wouldn't pay more for a N4 at this point. With a quad core processor and 2 GB of RAM, we should be able to run the latest android for quite a while.
no matter what kind of phone you have, there may always be some kind of complains. First question is like asking if this phone is perfect while nothing is.
Battery's been great for me on PA 4.4.2. don't random freeze. Hate is a strong word for something like a phone, i dont hate anything about this phone. I'm running 4.4.2. battery is removable on this phone. I really prefer sd card, so i probably would have bought this phone again. Nexus 4 may have better resell value tho.
This phone rocks. I've had it since November 2012. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

This is the best phone I have ever owned. I have had it since April of last year and have been running custom aosp ROMs on it for almost as long. My battery life usually lasts 15 - 24 hours depending on usage and screen on time. No freezes ever since I have had it. I have never had a complaint for this phone. I would pick this phone again and again and again. Plus the developer support is amazing for this phone.

I agree with the last couple posters. Have had the LGOG roughly a year. Usually by this point, I'm looking pretty actively for a hardware upgrade. But right now, I don't see anything out there that is worth spending money on to upgrade. Certainly there are better devices. But not so much better that I'm ready to jump ship. Yesterday, with a sort of light usage day, I had the phone off charger for almost 17 hours, had 2 hours 7 minutes of screen on time, and when I plugged in when I went to bed, still had 49% battery left. I'm running a full featured 4.4.2. ROM. I'm having no stability problems. I'll be here a while.

this is the first phone that i havent wanted to throw at a wall after a year of owning it. With a cache cleaner, it still runs like day one. The roms are great, and i love the LG UI, its got no bloat, and everything on it works great. i love the notification shade.
would buy again
The only thing I don't like about this phone is that the back of the phone is not another screen. I like bling on my back screen or it doesn't matter which side i pick up in the dark cuz I have to screens.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
There isn't really anything to hate about it. Besides the non so good case choices for it and the less good camera then the international version has and also the blink notification on the front would be better. But it beats the nexus 4 in pretty much everything. The screen on the nexus had a worse color calibration for example. No LTE but wireless charging is nice. I give that to the nexus 4. If u run something like CM11 on ur LG G e970 u basically have a better version of the nexus 4 at ur disposal for less money.

Finally impressed.

All I can say is wow. Had this phone for a few days now and it really is the best I've had...
I've had Samsung S3, HTC Sensation, Google Nexus 4 amongst about 20 others.
Here is where I think the LG excels.
Screen. Obviously my first full HD screened phone but just wow. Looks great and just feels right. Decent brightness and viewing angle. Using it at 35 percent brightness suits my usage.
Software. Some of you may have strongly differing opinions here but here goes. Im waiting for official KitKat for UK g2 but I've installed the German Vodafone KitKat. Runs so smooth, nowhere near as bloated as sense or touchwiz. I like the white tabbed menus, I like the few customisation options like icons and the soft buttons. Knock on and off is fantastic less buttons equals less bezel.
Battery. Max screen on time I've come near in my usage on any other phone was maybe 5 hours tops with really light usage. With this phone I'm hitting 8 hours.
Camera. Not a huge user of the cam but compared to other phones I've had I'm getting fantastic results in general day to day. I'm sure low light is where some of you would dispute.

Yea LG G2 is a awesome phone indeed.

Yup really is.
Good thing is that it seems it will hold its own for a while. There aren't many new chipsets coming out. The SD800 is pretty much it. Even the next gen Galaxy phone is based on it. So we're right at the top as far as performance and compatibility.
i just got my LG G2 (T-MO) a few days ago and i love it even on stock which is rare for me. from what i can tell 4.4 has just rolled out recently which would explain the lack of root methods that do not involve reverting the OTAs and custom T-MO specific roms which is just more for me to look forward to. I even have my work cell forwarding calls to my G2 because of the handset love!

Awesome, awesome, awesome phone.
I'm running stock ROM with a few modifications. I did try PA 4.1 and whilst being more aesthetic it lacked important features for me.

At LG you can remove the bloatware. At least on KitKat froms for F320. I'm not sure it's the same for other variants.
LG is the next to rise IMO, the G2 is just the beginning. There needed to be a new leader anyways. HTC had their time and Samsung is done.
Do you think you will upgrade to the galaxy s5 or is it worth it. i dont think i will be but unsure right now

I have bought a g2 16Gb version 1 month ago and still feel very happy about my choice
Was about to get a nexus 5 but the battery and camera of G2 had me going in that direction..
A very good phone, it's worth buying the LG official quickwindow case as well
Im running stock LG unrooted rom and havent felt the need to tweak anything yet, which is weird since my previous phone was a galaxy nexus and during the last months I was used to trying a new ROM every afternoon
FYI 4 colleagues of mine also got a G2 after seeing mine during the last month
Specifically for the 16Gb version, you need to carry an OTG cable and a usb stick if you go on vacation (which may mean limited or no LTE coverage) and want to use the phone to get pictures and video, as video will get the available storage get full rather easy

VEEERY Happy so far. Its much faster, battery life is great, and it feels very good in my hands.
Oh and it looks awesome in white

G2 current state of play

My son has decided to get a G2 rather than Nexus 5 as the price is identical now. There are many discussions about bugs with 4.4.2 (knock on etc ) and voip not working. I just wondered what had now been fixed and what problems still remained? It seems a no-brainer getting the G2 at the current price over the Nexus 5 - is it the right decision?
Sent from my LG-D855 using Tapatalk
I was in the same scenario as you.
It all comes down to personal preference. Price-wise they are pretty equal now, some sites have the N5 priced higher than the G2 lol.
How I look at it: N5 for highest XDA support, guaranteed fast firmware updates and if you want a smaller screen. G2 for bigger battery and more features built in.
I went for G2 since I dont have anything against the LG UI so I havent even rooted mine. No lagg at all experienced with stock 4.4.2 for me and I'm enjoying the phone as it came out of the box. To me it seems like I got more value of my money since they are priced so equal now.
Plus, I have previouly owned a Nexus 4 and I just hated its screen colours. Personal preference as mentioned, but you cant really go wrong either way since both devices are great
Oh, and the knock on thing on KK bug only appears to some right after the update. Its fixed by updating the touch in the hidden menu. Takes a sec.

Unlike me, my son will just want it to work out of the box and has no interest in rooting etc, so I guess he has made the best choice.

Since the day I bought it (November 2013) I literally had 0 problems with this phone. Everything works (I can't say the same about VoIP, though, cause I don't use it).
NB: I own a D802
I had a Galaxy S3 (AT&T, not i9300 - wish the development community was even 1/5 of the size...) Basically used AOKP and my favorite KToonsez' KT747 Kernel with his own app KTweaker. Also used Quantum ROM, built ground up based on CM11 and was the first 4.3 aosp rom! Dude made it so sick it was way better than Samsung TouchWiz. Those were the days.
Now I run Cloudy S3 and use an lg based stock rom unlike EVER. Also Dorimanx 8.8 Kernel!

That's my only gripe about the g2...i miss my KT kernels...hated Samsung though and had cm on it from day 1
I vote N5 because it has better dev support, as do all Nexus devices. Honestly phones that aren't Galaxy S or Nexus see support die off quickly.
Transmitted via Geass
I also had Nexus 4, which obviously has better development support but with poor battery which always made feel incomplete. I was chasing all battery saving tips all the time.
I know Nexus 5 has better development support compared to G2 but has a battery that is 16%-20% smaller. So really you will have to decide whether development and ability to play with latest stuff is more important or longevity is more important.
For me choice is was straight forward so I chose G2.
I appreciate what people do for development but for me it also became overwhelming with Nexus4 with flashing and finding right ROM, which sort of became self-unfulfilling prophecy of right ROM .
I have VS980 and haven't moved from Stock in months, except for few root tweaks such ad Greenify and Xposed modules.
So in the end, you gotta decide for yourself what's important and make that a choice.
Haha I completely agree, thats the disadvantage of high XDA acitivity. I had the N4 when N5 was out. I remember some N4 users were starting to say that development for N4 was slowing down because of N5 and yet there were 20+ threads that had new replies every day lol. Flashaholics all over the place, I didnt know what to start with so I just went for the easy solution - famous custom stock ROM called Purity. In all my N4 time I probably flashed 4 out of 150 ROMs lol

I still gotta buy it but idd washed out colors we're bad but that could be fixed with Color profiles and or with The Tardis where 3 profiles were included i thought. RohanM I get your feeling also about batterylife & Camera especially in night but stock android that was also the huge Dissapointment for me because when you browse the N4 Android development forums there are only All stock android like roms only with some features more so i was getting annoyed of it and switched to miui although the batterylife was horrible there and late notifications.
Still gotta choose G2 Or N5. In my opinion with awesomeness G2 but with durability N5. With durability i mean the protection/flash risks/display problems maybe.
But philevy your son better needs to get the G2 cause its also more user friendly in my opinion then the N5 and if he doesnt like the G2 Stock then he could always change to something like Cyanogenmod or mokee idk.

Only the 3K battery and a better camera with FM radio would be my dream phone. I don't need amoled screen since i already had 2 phones with amoled screen and they got burn in's which couldn't go away.

Root and customs

I've recently bought this phone which I'm quite pleased with however I've noticed there's absolutely no Roms or tweaks for this phone. I'm really shocked as every previous moto phone had so much development it's unreal.
Why is that?
The first thing I thought I would do is root and try all the tweaks customise etc. But boy it's dry out there.
What's happened?
Is there any other forum which anyone can recommend?

There is one ROM so far based on stock, but no not a lot of open development for this device. I imagine its just lack of users really. It doesn't seem that this phone has the same adoption rate as say the Moto X, which had a ton of users because of its low price.
That being said, there IS a custom Kernel that sets the clock speed of the unlocked Moto Z, to be the same as the VZW moto z (significantly higher) which is a nice feature.
That's a real shame, moto priced themselves out. This phone missing couple of essential features like waterproof and wireless charging which would have made all the difference.
Real nice looking phone nevertheless, wish screen was slightly bigger 5.9" min.
Why would you even root this phone ? Battery life 12hours sot vibrant display is awesome and performance is like snapdragon 821 what would you need more? If you unlock the bootloader and root android pay and some apps don't work it's not worth the hassle and it will only get worse if somebody tries to tweak or mod it.

12 hours of SoT ?? ... You must be using a Moto Z Play.
