Okay, so you installed Win 8.1 and are having driver issues. You are not alone, 8.1 does not recognize your phone, so what to do right? Do you want to wait until HTC releases a driver that works? Sure you could, but you want a fix now don't you. Well, you are left with only 2 choices. Either downgrade to Win 8 or dual boot Ubuntu, or your favorite Linux distro. I tried both, and both solutions work. So, for all the 8.1 fastboot questions, there it is. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is what it is. none of this works well, or at all on 8.1. I am back to Win 8, and it's all good again. Don't upgrade if you want to play for now.

your right but HTC has already fixed the problem it's called hboot 1.55. If your already s-off and on hboot 1.55 windows 8.1 is no problem at all. getting your phone to 1.55 s-off on a 8.1 pc is the problem. I had to return to windows 8 only long enough to get the newest firmware flashed and immediately returned to windows 8.1 and fastboot works fine.
Note: I use acronis true image to backup and restore my windows drive between windows 7 - 8 - 8.1, it only takes about 15-20min to fully change OS from one to the other and back. I have windows on a 120gig SSD and all my programs installed to D:\ and E:\ drives, it works really well.
Great news on the 1.55, there have been so many questions about it, I felt the need to post something to help. I wonder then if the converted GPE's that are on 1.54 will get the new Hboot. My converted Dev Edition already has it. Would certainly solve a lot of problems.

How do I run OS, and rom loaders on a MAC. I would like to load a rom that fixes the wifi problem with my Verizon XV6800. Please can someone help. Thanks
You don't.
Unless your Macintosh has an intel processor and has some sort of Windows emulation (bootcamp parallels, wine, etc.), you can't. There isn't a way to do this straight from OS X.
Syncing your PDA with Mac is easy with the help of The Missing Sync or PocketMAC but updating your firmware, you'll have to use the next best PC in your area.
Good luck
Windows XP
Can anyone send me windows XP so I can duel boot and flash my XV6800 rom? I have parallels but no windows. Thanks

No. That's asking for wares which is against forum policy. You can download a trial from Microsoft and use it that way.
Be careful when running ROM upgrade tools within a VM on a mac. I got stuck in bootloader and the VM wouldn't see my phone at all. I had to find a PC in my closet to break it out I can only say this is true with Parallels though - VMWare may work better in this case but I've got no way of knowing.
try flashing from your microSD card

I had the same trouble.....funny my old treo could be flashed in a Parallels VM with no problem, and ESN repairs on sanyos also work in it.
I noticed that if you keeep the mouse moving, it will be more likely to complete the flash....however that makes no sense!
Thanks
Thanks for the replys. Sorry for asking for wares.
I've heard people say they have gotten Odin to work on their 64 bit versions of windows, but I cant. I am able to use it on a computer running Windows 7 - 32bit, but not either of the computers I've got running 64 bit.
I've definitely installed the 64 bit the drivers. I can access the phone in ADB on these computers. Odin sees the phone and throws up a com port, but I get a weird error message with Chinese characters when I try to move forward with the flash.
Anyone have a definitive answer? Is it possible to use Odin on Win 7 64bit?
I flashed the leaked J12 with Odin on my 64bit Windows 7 laptop without any trouble.
I flashed with Odin on my W7 64bit desktop. Had a little trouble with it sticking on the verifying files at the beginning, but restarted it and it ran fine the second time. That's the only experience I've had with Odin. Just though I'd let you know that it works on my 64bit machine.
Thanks guys. I dont know what the hiccup is on my end. I might go through my drivers again just to make sure that isnt the issue.
I would highly suspect that the drivers are the issue as have used Odin on 2 separate 64bit machines. Make Sue that after u download the Sammy drivers, that they are installed, and installed correctly.
they call me...kick ass
I was never able to make any win7 system recognize my vibrant in dl mode at all, 32 or 64 bit, no matter what drivers i tried. I even tried to extract the 64 bit drivers to the 32 bit Os as I had seen mentioned in a thread some people had success with. Xp ran it like a champ on the first attempt.

I know were talking about different phones here but I've been scouring the internet trying to find a solution to a problem I'm having right now. when switching from 1 custom ROM to another, it was required that I flash to stock EC05, then flash to EE?? my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 wouldnt work properly (kept getting stuck in boot.bin in ODIN0 but my old faithful Netbook with Windows XP Home SP3 (x86) workd flawlessly!
I'm talking 3 HOURS of trying to get the Win7x64 to work properly and had my Epic reflashed with XP in 3minutes and 27 seconds, not counting time to install Samsung Drivers into XP (30-45 seconds)
Granted this is my experiance, but before I got x64 I was running with Win7 X86 and still never had problems. I have read through Google search that other people with x64 Windows 7 had problems. This is my story only, best of luck to ya, but I am now ONLY going to use my ol Netbook (or x86 virsion of Windows) to ODIN my phone.
Never Stop Wanting More from your devices.
Im using 64 windows OS and i don't have a problem. If your device is not recognize by your PC just reinstall the samsung drivers and you are good to go.
Sometimes you have to go into the safe mode options and disable driver enforcement policy. Then it will work.

I have to have all the drivers correct as I have used this PC to unlock the bootloader and flash all my boot.img files, but the RUU won't find my DNA and gives me error 170 I believe it is. Windows 7 64bit ultimate.
try putting it in fastboot mode and as long as device manager says My HTC instead of android 1.0 and your phone reads fastboot usb then just run the RUU and it should work fine

In fastboot. In fact I can't get out of fastboot. I relocked bootloader fine, but can't seem to get the RUU to run. In DM it reads as "Android ADB device."

Could be it's 64 bit related as I recently tried flashing some files that were cake in win 7 32 bit but would not budge in win 8 64 bit. i have not figured out the issue as of yet but since I had another machine I just used that and it was fine. Think it's related to adb driver that either is not there or isn't working the same way in 64 bit...just a thought.

I'm going to try and run in VMware I guess. This is seriously frustrating I need to get this phone to stock to ship on ebay.
EDIT: Okay I ran it again after uninstalling/installing drivers for the millionth time and it worked somehow... Well I'm happy
I was working on restoring my HTC one to stock since my SIM slot happened to break. In the process I must have messed something up and I can no longer get into any version of android, I am stuck at the bootloader screen.
My thinking is that if I run the RUU I will be able to kick myself out of this and have a functioning device, my problem is that I can't get windows 8 to identify my phone in fastboot to run the RUU.
Has anyone had any luck with wine on OS X or is there another way I can flash a firmware to my phone?

VMWare or Virtualbox works far better on OSX and I'd trust that vs Wine any day of the week. Got an old windows xp disc laying around?
I don't think XP would work since I have USB 3 drives on the MBP, but if it would thats an easy fix. I think I can find one laying around my house.
I just got a new laptop with Windows 8.1 64 bit. When I plug in my Evo LTE, nothing happens. It does not show up as new hardware and there is no trace of it in the device manager. The charge light is on, but that's it.
I've tried installing HTC sync & drivers only but I get the same results. I've dug around on this site and on the web for a couple of days before starting this thread just in case I could find something. No luck.
My phone:
Evo LTE S-Off
CM 10.2
My laptop:
Acer V5 122P
1 USB 3.0, 1 USB 2.0
I've tried plugging it into both ports with the same above results. I'm stuck.
Seems to be a common issue with 8.1. The consensus seems to be either downgrade to 8 or find a Windows 7 machine to use.

oops. Double post.
Thanks. She's my baby.
I was afraid of that.. My Windows 7 machine has been retired. I've been reading about downgrading to 8.0 and it looks like it's a PITA as far as having to completely reset the machine.
So far everything but my phone works through the USB ports. I guess I'll just have to wait for a fix.
I spent countless hours trying to get ADB/Fastboot drivers to work on 8.1 and there was no fix.
I was able to find a fix for it!
Using a Live CD of Ubuntu and boot that. ADB/Fastboot work from there.
If you need help with that, I can guide you
Try a different USB cable - some will do charge only, others will give full access to communicate with phone.
If using an Intel chipset, go to Intel's webpage and download their USB 3.0 drivers and use those instead of Microsoft's - these are a must if trying to flash/root phone when using windows 8/USB3 drivers.

This is my favorite solution. Ubuntu (Linux) is the bets when handling Android. Sometimes, ADB on Windows tends not to recognize devices that are booted into recovery, for example. Never a problem with Ubuntu.
I have a 32gb flash drive which I installed the complete Ubuntu package onto. So I simply boot from my USB whenever I want to use it. And this method is better than a Live CD because all of my files/settings are saved. Live CDs require setting up ADB and fastboot each time, to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please inform me.

How did you do this? I can't use 8.1 with fastboot. Would love to use one of my old thumb drives and try.
Download Ubuntu here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
Download the Live USB creator here (instructions included):
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
Some might find my method to be a bit cumbersome, but it got the job done. I experienced a lot of problems trying to dual-boot Windows 7 & Ubuntu, so I used 2 flash drives. I used the 2gb drive as the Live USB install, rebooted using my new Ubuntu Live USB, then I installed Ubuntu onto my 32gb drive. In Windows, you might be able to run the installer, and install Ubuntu to the flash drive that way, but for some reason that I don't know, it would force me to try or install Ubuntu as my only option.
I will continue to edit this post as I find more tips, and clearer instructions.
If your win8 system only has USB 3.0 ports, try installing the intel usb3.0 drivers instead of the Microsoft ones. This is what I did to get around adb and htc sync connection issues - I have no problem connecting my win8.1 system w/intel usb3.0 drivers to communicate and flash rom's to my evo since I made the switch over. do a search and you will find all the information about intel vs. Microsoft usb drivers on this and other sites.
