Flashing Kernel makes back/menu button disabled - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I don't know why, I have tried this on two different roms. Flashing the 8/25 ktoonsez kernel makes my back and and menu button not work at all, doesn't light up or vibrate or anything. I followed the instructions exactly but they don't work . Currently on the latest hyperdrive rom.

[Q] Vanilla Gingerbread rom

Ok, so I flashed JT's Vanilla gingerbread rom using CWR 4 and everything seemed fine. I then flashed B Boy Blizzard theme and everthing ran fine for about twenty mintes, then I got what I thought was the sleep of death (only when I pressed the sleep button). I pulled the battery and powered the phone back on. The phone booted into recovery and I got and error 7 cache recovery unable to mount message. I really like what little of the rom I saw and the theme. I sure at this point I'll have to Odin back to stock as I can't do a recovery either (same error message). What I'd like to know is this just a problem I'm having or is there something wrong with the rom or theme? Please advise. Thx in advance.
I have had alot of problems with that rom aswell...not really sure whats going on. Sometimes the rom will install with cwm 4 other times it just boot loops. I have tried every install method for that rom and nothing yet seems reliable. I have no problems flashing other roms, so idk... just chillin with powerwash right now until the bugs get worked out w/ VGB(hopefully).
All of his themes (at this moment) are based on 080211 v2 VGB. And between v2 and v3 there were framework and other apk changes i.e. settings. So flashing that theme on top of v3 will surely lead to issues. Just reflash rom. And make sure the theme you try only says for v3.
good day.
Also, you wont boot into the right recovery using the 3 finger method. you need to use adb or the reboot options

[Q] All soft buttons stopped working on CM7

I installed Cyanogenmod 7 a week ago, and everything was pretty much working fine.
Randomly today, all 4 of the soft buttons stopped working in the middle of me using my phone. I believe I was checking scores on an NFL app. Regardless, reapplying the CM7 zip didn't fix it. I tried factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. Nothing.
Decided to try to reroot. Reapplied ED05, which is what I did before I installed CM7. Got back to essentially factory... soft buttons still don't work. Reinstalled CM7... took, but soft buttons won't work.
I thought I read somewhere that this is an issue with gapps, but I can't seem to find that page or people discussing it again. Installing gapps again didn't work.
I'm willing to get my phone back to it's most basic level, and even erase the SD card if I need to, but not sure how to clear my phone moreso than my reverting back to ED05.
Thanks for your input guys.
Also, I had reinstalled my apps using Titanium, but not the app data. Again, everything was just fine for a week.
Also, having done a bunch of flashing and what not, I dont' know what happened, but now when I long press the power button, the menu comes up. When I try to use volume up/down to navigate to power off, all I get is volume going up and down
So, i know this thread is sort of dead, but this happened to my fascinate a while back with a version of CM7 mtd (55 maybe?)... I'm fairly convinced that the sensors for the buttons (and the lights for that matter) are completely shot, but I can't really test that. I have flashed back to stock, re-rooted it,and done everything I can think of to fix it.
You probably messed the phone up for good... my advice (if you haven't already done it): get a new phone.
I've noticed that when I revert back to stock ED05, and flash CM7 on top of that, it doesn't work right. minor to major glitches appear...
What i did was flash back to stock ED05, then ran the update to Gingerbread EH03... Then flashed CM7 with Glitch v13 kernel. seemed to fix a lot of my issues.
idk if this helps or it's just a flook, but just sayin...
Will try this out

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm having the same issues as the OP with failing soft keys after flashing through CM7 to an android 4.1 based ROM, Paranoid Android. Is the Glitch kernel built into Cyanogenmod 7 or did you load it separately?

If you are already on ICS just wipe cache and dalvik cache and flash. If not just flash up to ICS and flash kernel with ROM (same cwm session). You may want to do some reading in that thread first to make sure you get right version for your ROM.

[Q] LED buttons no longer working?

My buttons won't work when i press them not exactly sure whats wrong but this began happening within the past few days. I've been running WTSB 3.5 latest update of 2.4 and Olympus Prime both of which use's a chad kernel which i'm not sure may or may not be the source of the problem. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

By LED buttons I'm going to assume you're referring to the 4 capacitive buttons across the bottom, Home, Menu, Back and Search.
Never really heard of any software disabling these buttons, either intentionally or accidently but doesn't mean it couldn't happen!
Quick shorter term and temporary approach: boot into the custom recovery and see if their lights flash or they work at all in the custom recovery. I remember at one point during TWRP development we had the lights flashing on them. Not sure what kinda support ended up but you should be able to get some type of response to at least indicate the hardware is working.
Long but thorough approach:
Since you are running a custom ROM and kernel, I would suggest first reverting back to Stock and wipe /data and /cache.
If everything works on a Stock ROM and kernel, then you know it has something to do with either the custom ROM, custom kernel or a custom setting configuration. From a known working stock configuration, you can customize one piece at a time checking after each customization step to make sure the buttons work.
Ideally, the buttons will break after a specific customization step and you'll be able to narrow it down to that step and approach the appropriate developer with your results who will then be able to dig into their code and look at the issue.
Hope that helps!

Update to ICS 4.0.3 -> Menu and Back button not working

Hi everyone,
I ran into some trouble by upgrading Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 to the latest ICS 4.0.3
Alpha Relase from codeworkx (Build 02122012; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410400).
After upgrading, I noticed the menu and back button are not receiptive to
touch any more and dont work. The background light of the two buttons still
shines. But when I hit either of them nothing happens. The home butten works
though.
While upgrading to ICS 4.0.3 I also upgraded the modem version to XXLPB
Modem (just in case, it matters).
To fix the issue, I tried to go back to Cyanogenmod 7 again, but strangely, here
the buttons dont work now anymore either. I am lost.
Does anyone have a clue, what happend? Its really hard to use Android without
any menu and back button (I installed the virtual button app to have at least
on screen buttons).
Robert
Try to make a clean install of a custom rom through recovery(no AOSP)... If this doesn't help, try to flash an official gingerbread firmware using ODIN....

If your home button doesn't work after ICS ugrade..
If your home button doesn't work after ICS ugrade..
please do it.
1) You must do rooting.
2) install "Root Explorer" application.
3) run "Root Explorer"
4) go to "/efs/imei".
5) you have to make "keystr" file
6) just write down it "ON"
- please use capital "ON" ... not "on"
7) save and rebooting
8) enjoy
I installed several official Firmware ROMs via Odin. Since I got my phone from Vodafone, I used the official Vodafone ROMs. Unforunately without success. The update process went fine (although some ROMs produced bootloops after update), the menu and back button still dont work.
It kind of seems they are physically broken. But how, I cannot explain. Or could it still be a software issue?

Well, the home button does work. Its the menu and back button who dont.
I had a look at the keystr file anyway. Its there and it already contains "ON". Still no function...

Shouldn't full wipe and installation of an official rom be sufficient? How would rooting and installing a custom rom again be of additional use to make the buttons work?

Your basic problem is you have installed Alpha and Beta roms and have lost buttons .
Probability is its software not hardware .Custom roms are of no use .
You need to wipe the lot and determine if its hardware or firmware .
....................................
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Still problems use usb jig to set rom counter to zero .
Return to service centre .
jje
If nothing is left to do yet with the possibility of Odin rootet firmware.
Of course, the best 3 piece set ...
I guess I am out of luck and have to send the phone to repair.
All the phone wipes and re-flashes with various custom and official roms (tried 1 part and 3 part roms; also with re-partitioning in odin) didnt fix the buttons.
I guess the phone really is broken.
Thanks for your replies.
i have the similiar problem but my home button works but my back button doesnt. it has actually switched and my home button has been doing the functions of the back button and the back button does nothing. it lights up to touch but no haptic feedback or functions. i tried the steps listed above with writing the script to ON and rebooted and still same issue. worked fine until i flashed the rootbox aokp ics rom. only thing i havent done to try to fix it is to factory reset and re-install rom. any suggestions on another alternative?

Yes it looks like your already have, but go to the AT&T Galaxy S II (SGH-I777) forum to get ROMs and such. This is the forum for the GT-I9100. A different model phone.
The two phones are very close, but there are differences, such as the i777 having 4 capacitive buttons, and the i9100 having only 2 with 1 hardware button.

[Q] Volume rocker no wake

I recently reverted back to stock Bell Atrix firmware (rooted) . I cannot find a setting to stop the volume keys from waking the screen up. Is this not part of the stock firmware? Is there a. MOD that I could use? Everything I search for shows me enabling mods, but not disabling.
Thanks
To my knowledge no stock firmware has the wake-on-volume feature by default. You must've either flashed a mod or flashed a ROM that has the mod included. Try looking for an unmodded fruitcake.

I didnt flash any mods. Just flashed the stock atrix firmware and rooted. Then i noticed that the volume keys wake the screen up.Thanks
You are right. I did install "no lock" from the market. That is waking up the phone with volume key. So I guess this is only possible on a custom rom?
