HI everyone... I have a question:
I have an at&t sgh i717 with a virgin sim (Im outside of the us), and I need to choose a new modem (I think) because currently I have this t989 uvle1 for tmobile that I had to use to unlock my phone. I'm getting three bars in the signal so my question is or are: do I really need to change the modem? Does the signal have to show more bars so that one can be sure that the modem fits the phone? And, a modem has to be chosen depending on your phone and on your location (since I'm in southamerica)? does having a 2.6.3 kernel affect any of this, should I upgrade it?
I hope I'm not asking too much, sorry,
thanks
Wrong forum, belongs here. I've asked mods to move your post, sit tight.
Edit - You mean i777, right ? (I717 is the AT&T Note).

Since you have an i717, normally you would probably want to flash back to an AT&T based modem. However, since you're probably not on AT&T's network, your best bet is to try several modems and see which one works best with the provider in your area. My recommendation is to at least base your tests on signal strength and speed tests.

OK, I'm going to try several because just yesterday I found out that my gps didn't work and I think that's related to not having a suitable modem.
Additionally, I performed a speed test and whereas I get 12 mbps for download in my laptop I got 10 mbps in my phone, not much of a deal though.
Regarding signal, I get from three to four bars which isn't that bad and I've made a couple of calls and everything seems to be fine.
Since the gps thing is a real setback I'll flash another modem but I'm also thinking on upgrading to ics because right know I'm on gingerbread 2.3.6 with 2.6.3 kernel so I wanted to know if It's better to flash the modem before or after upgrading.
Thank you for your answers
You will probably have better luck if you upgrade to an ICS or jelly bean based rom.

The gps not working isn't always antenna issues. You can try to update the gps data file. Go to the market and get a gps fix app. You're looking for an app that will replace your gps configuration file with an updated file.

Thanks, good to know that.. it's just that when I received the phone it was working and based on that and some comments on internet I attributed this error to the switch in modem/baseband/radio...
Anyways, I'm installing a rooted ics rom and I'll come back to comment, hopefully positive things

To All, This is a new thread dedicated to trying to resolve the known problems with the current Hacked Radio/modems we all have experienced.
Please do not post already known issues over and over I will delete them. The Effort is to keep this thread clean and up to date with newly discovered fixes an/or new bugs.
Both Allgamer and I have a Note so any developer that needs something tested pm us and we will assist you as best we can
The issues we all seem to have experienced Are:
1. Dropped calls, this is a big issue... need to phone to never fail us..... especially for those who are business dependent.
2. Low up load speeds
3. Inconsistent data speed issues
4. Data dropping
5. Battery Drain/heat issues
If there are other specific issues that arise please post and I will itemize in the OP. Let's see if we can draft the assistance of a developer (s) who are excellent with radio/modem hacking. We are close to a final fix let's try to get across the finish line to 100% success.
Thanks to All who have to date helped in the quest of finding a perfect fix.
SPECIAL THANKS to All who paid the bounty..... kept your word....... and helped in any other way...... It REALLY warms the soul to know our community can come together and follow through on commitments......... Thank you all.... Oka1
Allgamer posted this for a fix for some : In case anyone still have the drop call issues, here's a good work around http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...77&postcount=2
RESERVED.....
Thank You
I just wanted to give Thanks to the guy that made this happen! I wasn't part of the initial bounty, but I sent him some cash! I love this device and just wanted to say Thank you!
can't wait to see
what comes out here.
Wasn't there a few people who started a new bounty for the 100% properly working radio fix? Could the OP please add them to the first post and maybe keep a running total with names like the original bounty?
Also, are there any radio/modem developers who could give me a few tips on how to start working on this? I opened the radio files all gung-ho like but as they are binary I have no idea what's what in there
(Or, if a radio/modem developer is considering working on this, let me know and I would like to help and donate $20 if we are successful )
I just wanted to say thanks for making this happen first.
Second, I used the updated build.prop that was posted from the guy who figured this all out and then flashed my phone with the Telus radio even though I'm on T-Mobile. I am pleased to say this combo works PERFECT for ME.
I am getting download speeds of around 10Mbps and upload speeds are usually around 2 to 3Mbps. This is plenty fast enough. Also the data switching is instant between edge and 4g if I go out of a 4g area. My signal is also just as strong as other T-Mobile branded phones by looking at the dB level of the signal.
If you are having issues I would encourage you to try this combo. I am perfectly happy with my Notes performance.
The OP is a forum moderator and as per their rules, they cannot condone or participate in bounty threads. A separate thread would have to be started.

i agree it's working pretty good for me as well
i'm still undecided which radio is better KID or Telus
they both seems o be doing great
in my end the limitations is mainly due the service provider, even on my T989 i can't get good upload speed, and download speed is the same on both my T989 and i717
so from my point of view, it's as good as it'll get
the only bug i frequently encounter is the data getting hung
which thanks fully the NoBar took care of that issue for me, if there is no signal for more than X amount of minutes it'll restart the radio for me to catch a new signal

Silly question, I gues not all AT&T Notes are created equal? I tried flashing the KID modem and my Note was very unhappy. It started up but it was stuck in an unholy lag. I tried everything but it was not until I flashed one of the other 2 modems that it went back to normal. I am trying the Telus/build.prop combo and the download is a LITTLE better at just under 4Mps with still the lousy upload speed. I live in northern Delaware.

Shouldn't have any lag in the operation of the phone. It is likely that the KID modem you are using was the original T-Mobile zip and not the modded one.

I don't notice any kind of heat issues with this device on any combo I've tried, however I don't play games for hours or anything.
As for battery life, it seems just a tad worse on battery with the build.prop modification and Telus radio but even with worse battery it is still the best life of any android device I've owned. With the data speeds I'm getting the battery life is an ok trade off.

I have successfully installed this rom. I think it's the most amazing jelly bean rom for galaxy s2 at the moment. I like its smoothing and quick response. feel a bit warm at the back and the battery is losing 1% at every minute while wifi is on. Over all is great. Cheers!
Actually, I've been experiencing data connection problems. My phone works, but it won't connect to 2g/3g for internet.
Should I try switching radios?
If so, which one is recommended? Or do you just try them at random?
Thanks again
On first boot normally can't get mobile data to work because APN was not configured properly (or the list empty), after a reboot mobile data will work again. If it doesn't, then you have to key in the APN manually.
For radio/modem, since there are no changelog released and nobody know what are the differences among them, it is assumed that the latest one will be better.

first and foremost asking or recomending which ROM/KERNEL/MODEM ,is against XDA rules, since all phones are different due to various reasons , hence if u have a an issue with ur modem u have to try a cpl of them on ur own and see the one suits u the best.

It sounds like your apn settings are messed up. Try to reboot twice and then try. If that doesn't work, you will have to find the settings and input them manually.

I flashed this radio:

Now, the data, 3G, works great.
I've been experiencing an issue and have read several post about RADIOS on the SGS2.
I flashed my mobile with the nightly 10.2 CM and after that it started to ask me for "SIM network UNLOCK" Which I can't unlocked, thought it was the version issue so I dl a the newest one and same issue, I tried the ICS stable 9.1 and same issue.
I've read something like radios on the CM support part. Which I dunno where is it yet . If I need to flash it and u guys can help me out to pick up the correct one I'll appreciate it. my model of SGS2 is the i777 from AT&T.
May I install NELP on my CM 9.1? how? where can I get the files to do it?

What phone do you have? This is the thread for the i777 S2 variant, and at least one of the modems you mentioned are for the i9100 variant (don't recognize the others you list).
You can only use modems designed for your device, so if you have an i777 see the link directly above your post.

Amigo, please try it. You might get a good result.
Since they are galaxy s phones you can flash the modems but not all will work. I was trying other modems Thursday, and even though I got bars and I could enter the APN and activate data, the phone was sooo laggy.
Many users tried the new modem and had the same lag problems. But exeriment and report back. If you get a bad result you only have to flash your old modem, not restore your system.
thats the one I tried, it totally lagged my phone out
Why can't it work? Maddening, I know. The US t-mobile frequencies and the two bands used is the issue. They went rogue with that two band scheme and now there's always issues using any hardware on their network.
Would it be possible to swap out the hardware, specifically the modem chip, or is it soldered on there?
Sent from the Jelly Way Galaxy
The mainboard contains the processors, video, modem, and sound. Not possible to swap chips.
It seems like trading hardware with other xda'ers would be easier and more sure. xda has a sale or trade section.
so do even know if it will be possible to generate a working, better modem from the tmo more at all, or is it just a really difficult task?

the modem file is a binary file that seems like nobody is able to decompile or whatever.
Its always like this throughout the forums --people get a phone made for one network then struggle to make it work on the other.

So when you say "seems" and "struggle" I take that as being very difficult but not necessarily impossible¿

Nothing is impossible ...
But unless a serious interest is taken by developers who know and understand the coding, and how this code integrates into the chipset,
Then you probably won't see progress.
I'm guessing it would take development at the manufacturer level ....to pull it off.
And carrier/manufacturer relationships are often set in stone. It's amazing that our talented developers are able to glean so much for us, given the fact that often times, they have little or nothing to work with, yet they manage to give us some pretty awesome work ..g
I have a Samsung Galaxy SII, the i777. I have rooted it and loaded ShoStock3. I love the ROM except I'm having trouble downloading apps from Google Play. The research I have done suggests that I need a better modem. I have downloaded and flashed six different modems. Each one just as slow as the last. I'm in Salt Lake City, Utah. I know that the location can have something to do with the modem as well. Does anyone have a suggestion on which modem would work the best? Also, if you happen to know that there is a separate problem and that it's not the modem, will you please let me know? Everything else seems to load fine, it's just trying to load apps from the market that I'm really noticing it is really slow. Thank you everyone in advance.

Modems are good in different places. What's good for me might be awful for you. Have you done a speed test?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
You've already flashed 6 different modems, you should know by now which one is the best for you out of those 6.
If you don't like them all, try some more and pick out the best.
Have you tried KH7 or LL6?
Side note: why can't you use Wifi for Google Play?
You are I assume flashing modems for this device right? I only ask because obviously the i9100 modems wouldn't work for us. (And I'm pretty sure calls don't work with them) also, if you are flashing all these modems and they ARE for our device, and NONE are working properly, I would look at a fresh flash of the rom of your choice wiping everything again or going back to stock to eliminate hardware error possibility.
I did verify that they were all for my model and network. None of the six were any better than any other. I also noticed none of them worked on the 4G network. I tried to download an app to do a speed test but after 30ish minutes waiting for it to download on each modem so I could test it, I gave up.
Shoman94 changed to UCLL6 modem on his latest build. Are you using this one now?
Or you can select all the modems from here:

Okay, so, I've done a fair amount of reading and searching about modems and RILs, including other forums, but I've still yet to find the specific information I'm looking for. (Most of the stuff that I've found relates to the i9100.) So if I missed the relevant post, I apologize, please direct me there.
That said, here's the deal. I've got an i777, which I have unlocked and am currently using on T-Mobile. I've flashed the stable CM 10.1.3 (Android 4.2.2). Its baseband is UCLE5. It's running well. I have few complaints, except for occasional low signal.
I've already seen this thread, with the different modems available: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336958
I lost the link, but I also found a thread, possibly on another forum, where a T-Mobile user reported better performance with baseband UCMD8. I'd like to try it. I think I can manage flashing it on my own via CWM.
However, I've read in a bunch of places that it's also important to have a RIL matching the baseband version. I found a thread that gives a terminal emulator command to find your current RIL version (getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl"), and mine is "Samsung RIL(IPC) v2.0", which is apparently from Gingerbread.
So, my question is this: Should I also change my RIL? If so, 1) where would I get the appropriate RIL for the i777 with CM10.1.3, and 2) how would I install it, preferably without performing another wipe, reset and ROM installation?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You have nothing to worry about - just flash the i777 modem you want via recovery; you don't have to wipe anything, it will work fine. I wouldn't worry too much about RIL; over the two years of changing modems back and forth I've never encountered any problems regarding RIL (except for some wakelocks, but that's more to do with bad/weak signal than anything else).
To be clear, I'd still be happy for input from anyone regarding the i777's RIL, but I did go ahead and flash UCMD8. I've already noticed something new; my phone now seems to drop from H+ to 3G fairly aggressively when I'm not actually using it, then go back to H+ when I do, where since flashing CM10.1.3, it previously connected only at H+ or E. I imagine this is a battery saving measure. I'll have to see how it behaves for a few days.
Thanks for your response SteveMurphy. By the way, what baseband/RIL version do you use, if I may ask?

I imagine this is a battery saving measure. I'll have to see how it behaves for a few days.
Thanks for your response SteveMurphy. By the way, what baseband/RIL version do you use, if I may ask?

I'm on UCMD8,
The reason you're seeing 3G more often is because with the newer roms you have the ability to better control your network modes. For instance, if you want to use Edge you can manually switch to 2G mode. It's possible the older firmwares (GB, ICS...) had this option but I really can't remember.
Galaxy S Backdoor
So it seems my question about RILs was unintentionally timely, as Samsung's RIL for Galaxy S devices contains a backdoor that's been verified with proof of concept.

I'm not sure which version of Samsung's RIL they tested, or whether they tested the I777, but it seems most Galaxy phones are affected.
Hope someone gets to work on this soon.

Suspiciously timely, yes.
here's another take on the back-door claim:
