Wow the selection of ROMs for my shiny new SG2 is amazing. I got mine from Expansys and was going to stick with the stock ROM but the constant switching from 3G to H+ was driving me nuts and I would lose data connectivity every few seconds. As a result I decided to give a custom rom a try. Right now I have the Cognition S2 rom installed and will test it out for a few days but I was wondering if some of you have already gone down this path and found a good/stable rom for AT&T. Most important to me is stability, battery life and reliable data/call connectivity.
Turn off fast dormancy *#9900# been with Cog for awhile and loving it.
There is no Best ROM, different stokes for different folks and all. You really should just test around and see what works best for you.

I guess I shouldn't have said "best" - what I really meant what - looking for some success reports from people running particular roms/modems with AT&T. More often than not reply posts are from users outside of the USA so I was finding it tough to gauge issues here in the states. Of course this is to be expected since none of our carriers are selling the phone yet.
Illicit Hero - thanks I did turn off fast dormancy based on the recommendation in the Cognition instructions.
im with fido, which is rogers which is AT&T and I cant say there are any problems with any of the roms. I am however using Criskelo at the moment without a single problem
ROMs are generally non region specific and the most you may have todo is put in the correct apn settings for Internet and mms, but there is a thread for at&t apn settings so you should be covered there.
As far as modems, just work your way though them till you find one that works well for you, your best bet is starting the with newest and working down till you find a good one.

^ what he said. There is no region specific roms. All roms work fine, just enter the apn if it doesn't register automatically.
I use leomar rom for stock, it has every possible customization and theme available thru rom kitchen app. And then there is cm 7 for pure android fun.

Well said! I'm on AT&T and KH3 modem is working very well, then again, I can't remember a modem that wasn't good with the exception of KG1.

On 3UK I have found all but KE7 and KH1 have been trash for me
Download speed wouldnt top 100Kbps vs 200Kbps up! and poor signal.
My girlfriend recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S 4G (SGH-T959V). I enjoy all the features I get from rooting, etc on my G2. I saw the Gingerbread update from T-Mobile and have installed it for her. I wanted her to be able to have root, remove bloatware and have the lagfix (voodoo, assuming it is still needed) working. As I was getting ready to find her a good ROM this CM 911 dustup happened. It's ok if she keeps the Samsung ROM, my question is where is this 911 "feature" stored? In other words, what can be done to her phone without destroying emergancy calling? I am pretty sure just rooting it is fine. Removing bloatware after rooting should be good also. I believe the lagfix replaces the kernel. If the kernel gets replaced will that break 911 calls? Is anyone working on a stock GB ROM (as officially released Nov 15) that would have root, removed bloat, and anything else safe that keeps 911 working? I would be glad to wipe the phone, root, remove bloat, (lagfix?) myself and post. I just do not know what is safe to play with. Is this just a radio issue, library issue or kernel issue? Any information would be appriciated. I would like to make her android experiance a good one that still allows her to call 911. I have searched the forums and the web but can't seem to nail down a good answer of what can be changed and what must be left alone to allow 911 to work.
911 operators are drunks anyways... here's some proof, provided from a random Google search.
This is the vibrant forum,sgh-t959 not t959v... very different..
From my understanding, cm7 is the only one with the 911 problem (and any rom coming from cm7)
. Stick to samsung roms and your good. Also the 911 thing isnt the end of the world.. you call them, they cant hear you.. hang up and theyll call you back

Ah, since the download for the updater said "Vibrant" (offical from Samsung) and the model number is so close I assumed they were mostly the same. I see now there is a S 4G forum. Sorry for the mix up. I would assume this phone could have the same issues if CM was ported. Currently it is listed as not supported. I'll move to the right forum and dig some more. Sorry for the waste of space. If anyone knows if these are affected by the 911 issue feel free to chime in. Or if a moderator wants to move this to the othe forum feel free.
Thanks
Lol the waste of space is no big deal and your right, id forgotten that they call yours the vibrant 4g. But still the two phones are very different hardwarewise, idk why.

You cant use vibrant rom. Both phone have different hardware. BTW you know the T959v 4g have Official Gingerbread.
I know this may sound weird but i have issues sending and receiving mms and my data can be a little spotty since moving to Red Pocket. The sim card installs a sim toolkit, not sure what it installs but when clicking the app it wants to show your account balance. So i did a little experimenting, i returned my phone back to bone stock, wouldnt you know i can send mms without any issues. So next ill apply root and see what happens, then use titanium to remove the sim toolkit.
Just want some thoughts, rom? Kerenel? Aliens in my phone?
Having a brain fart, I believe some of the roms increase then size of the mms that can be sent, wondering if the file size is too large?
Ok so far i can only run stock rooted, unnmaed, and TASK650's ICS'd OUT allow me to send mms on a consistent basis What am i missing?
Prbly having to do something with the hellraised i9100/AOSP ROMs.
Would a bad sim cause this? I'm on Unnamed 1.3.2 without any issues. Thinking heading to the man (att) to get signed up.

I'm sure it has to do with tweaks made to the mms in these roms, something the redpocket network doesn't like. Might make a trip the att store to see what one of their plans will cost me.

Most likely it's the CSC or the APNs.
I use my i777 also with other carriers, and what i have found is that some roms don't read the APN's that the sim have. So i would suggest you to double check the APN values.
That Sim Toolkit is just a shortcut for service that your sim would have, in my case is check balance, horoscope, new promotions and some more services.

Yeah I found that different roms setup the apn differently. Right now I have the apn type set to internet+mms+supl, not sure if the supl has anything to do with it.

I have found on many ROMs if I try to send the MMS from the camera or gallery app they won't send. But, if I go into messages and attach from there they send fine. I'm on shostock currenty, on att. I've tried every variation possible for the apns. The only time I can send a MMS from the camera or gallery is on complete stock, or MIUI. I gave up trying to figure it out long ago.

That sucks, I'm on unnamed right now and have no issues sending mms from gallery or camera. But I also had no issues sending from Gophone or h2o wireless. Just since switching to red pocket.

I could send from the gallery and camera just fine on unnamed too ... until I flashed S8. Since then even if I go back to unnamed it doesn't work. I don't want to blame S8 for it, but I was not the only one that had it happen just like that. Check the posts in the S8 thread. It was kind of a big thing. There was a ton of posts of people that had MMS break after flashing S8, no matter what they tried or what other ROMs they flashed. While I don't blame S8, one thing is sure .... I'll never flash it again.

I'm no android programmer, rom guru,...but i just found something interesting. What i thought might be a rom issue may be a kernel issue, at least for me. I had been running unnamed with DD12/08/11 kernel, great kernel. I had tried siyah 2.6.11 with unnamed and had issues sending mms. I did my little experiment, installed shostock 1.9.3 last night, this comes with DD2/18a, i was able to send 1 mms then after that failed attempts. So i went back to the 12/8/11 DD kernel and shostock 1.9.3 and wouldn't you know i'm sending mms again. So for me what kernel im running effects whether or not im able to send mms. That seems really odd to me, or should it?
I am on cricket and i flash a lot of ROMs I also flash a lot of phones to cricket and the one thing that is always an issue is mms. On a sense ROM this is very easy on AOSP and CM ROMs you have to edit the APNs. That said Im always looking for an easier way while searching XDA I foend this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1649508 is was written for the samsung epic but I tried on my 3D with Mazdas AOKP ROM and wow amazing. Many thanks to the OP
Edit I have also tested this on pacman and cm10 flawless
Just wanted to ask if anyone has been successful installing ROMs from other Note 3 devices. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 forum has lots of great options but I've not been able to get data on any of them. Just wondering if anybody has been successful with this and can provide detailed instructions on how you got it to work. I'm familiar with swapping APNs and overall decompiling compiling apks and some theming options so I feel like I can do most things fairly simply but this one I've been unable to figure out. I've swapped build. Prop files as well but I'm still unable to get 3G or LTE to work at all. Thanks for any info for our abandoned device.
I'm using darkera13's 6.0.1 s7 edge port. Works very well on my sprint note 3. Very minor bugs. It did break 3g/lte. Manually setting the APN used to work, and can work for other generic note 3 roms, but in this case, it wouldn't work anymore. It would either work shortly before automatically choosing another apn, or not work at all. Then I found this great app called mvnoslayer. It sets the apn to sprint or any of its mvno's(i'm on ringplus). Even then, I only connected at 3G. I had to edit the apns-conf.xml from the app myself and delete every reference to the number "13" from it (13 refers to 3g and 14 refers to lte). In the end, it connects at LTE(4G icon), and only goes to 3G when LTE is not available.
Here's the link to mvnobuzbee, a modified mvnoslayer, and will still need to edit out the 13, or you'll be stuck at 3G http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65917850&postcount=30

Why don't you just back it all up to a computer and format then copy back? I have 128gb card too and it doesn't take that long to backup.
Thanks for the info on your work around to install darklord's new port. I actually use do not disturb mode so it's kind of a deal breaker for me. I might give it a shot though. I tried using your method on phronis rom and could never get pass no Sim card no matter what I did. I had data one time then rebooted and it was gone again. Not worth the hassle... I copied a modified sprint apn xml file and changed to all 14 as well still no go. Using Sacs note 5 port atm so it's all good. Just itching to try something new. Can't wait for note 6..as long as they bring sdcard back!

S7 port rom does not support exfat so you can use something like guiformat to format your 128GB to fat32 with no problems.
Also, if you want something like sacs note 5 port, you can try music of life note 5 port from the main note 3 forum. It's also based from darkera's note 5 port and more updated.
Oh, and phronesis sucked for me. Not sure why it's popular. I tried it once and didn't detect my sim, felt silly, and never went back to it again. No other rom has given me that issue..

Thank you both, I wouldn't mind backing up and reformatting, it just sounded like I wouldn't be able to, like anything over 32gb had to be exfat and there wasn't another option. Have you noticed any stability issues after converting to fat32? Also I kinda had my eye on [ROM-6.0.1][DarkWolf_FW][Galaxy S7 Edge Port][V2] until I heard about the SD issue with MM, do you have an opinion on that ROM? It sounded pretty stable. And @xsisbest how is Sac's Note5 port? Is there any of the LP lag that most of the other ports had?

I haven't tried darkwolf's rom. I've only used Darkera's since that seems to work for the most part. Whatever problems his rom has usually the rest do as well. The new update fixed the battery life, which was irritating me. It's also smoother than the note 5 lp roms i was using. All s7 ports are a wip from every dev working on it. The first port came out a few weeks ago.
I tried life rom and aryamod and neither would get data even using the tool you mentioned. I'm sure there is a magic combo but I've yet to find it. I can wait till the note 6. I lasted almost 3 years with the note 3...3 more months will be a piece of cake!

man, you had me so excited. I have tried MOL's & Darkwolf's ports but couldn't get any data. I downloaded darkera13's port you linked and the mvno tool and I still can't get service. not even 3g. What CSC did you use in aroma when flashing the rom? Also, I notice in the xml files that option 4 (the sprint one) isn't structured the same as the others at the top so it might not actually be getting selected from the aroma installer.

I used the sprint csc SPR. I've only used the ringplus apn setting in mvnoslayer so I'm not sure about the sprint setting. You can try an app called 4g switcher to check if it's on "lte/gsm/CDMA auto prl". That works for me. Having it on "lte/cdma auto prl" would sometimes switch to the verizon network for some odd reason...
Edit: Of course, make sure your bootloader/modem are on latest! I updated mine the slow way, which is by going back to stock and updating that way. I guess you can look around for bl/modem packages around here as well.

Same here. I used Odin and went to OK2 official. Then flashed TWRP and tried this and a couple other s7 ports. I forgot about good ol' 4G Switcher. Thanx for that. I was then able to at least get 3G but still no LTE. Gonna try XAS CSC (also Sprint) and some other APN edits. I'll keep tinkering and let you know if I finger anything out.
Same. I'm gonna try Norma rom with this tool. I had the best luck with that rom.
So I wiped everything but data coming from sacs note 5 rom then flashed Norma rom. I then flashed the zip mentioned in this post and low and behold I have data! I didn't initially until I went to mobile networks and set my apn to sprint CDMA and boom! 4g lit up. Gonna reboot and install xposed. If you don't hear from me all went well!
Edit : after reboot I had to turn mobile data on again but it fired right back up. I also choose lte only as the network mode. Can't believe it's working!

XAS csc was only useful in Music of life LP note5 port since that allowed you to edit/add apn's. The SPR csc wouldnt let you do that for some odd reason. SPR is fine for s7 ports..well at least darkera's. If youre using mvnobuzbee and not getting LTE, read my first post on editing mvnobuzbee to force it on LTE. You don't need mvnobuzbee for note5 ports.

Ok, so I just noticed something. In that MVNO aroma installer, in the aroma directory inside the .zip, inside 4.apns-conf.xml (that's the one that gets flashed when you select SPRINT during aroma install, they used the wrong apn on the last line.
it should look like this:
<apn carrier="Sprint LTE" numeric="310120" mcc="310" mnc="120" apn="n.ispsn" user="Sprint" server="" password="*" proxy="null" port="null" mmsproxy="68.28.31.7" mmsport="80" mmsprotocol="null" mmsc="http://mms.sprintpcs.com" type="default,supl,mms,fota,dun" bearer_bitmask="13|14" />
once i made that change, i reflashed and 2 different s7 rom ports i had backed up now get LTE. I tried it first with the 13's removed as Dark suggested but after i FINALLY (i feel so stupid now) noticed that one apn was wrong and changed it, everything works fine even with the 13's in there. I put them back in so that it should step down properly to 3G if LTE is not available. It might have still done that with the 13's removed but now it def shouldn't be a prob.
anyway, sorry it took me so long. been working. hope this helps you as well.
oh, and i just tested sms, mms, & calls. no probs here.

That would make sense why I couldn't use Sprint Lte apn. CDMA worked but again only for Internet and not message and phone calls. I could give it another go but not sure it will do much good. I appreciate you getting us fixed up though!
there are updated versions of mvnobuzbee btw but one of them bricked my note 3 when testing. Youre free to try later versions or ask buzbee himself for something thatll work on our note 3's.
Edit: for me, not removing the 13 would get me stuck on 3g no matter what i'd do. After i removed them, I thought I'd be stuck with LTE but it did switch to 3g where there was no LTE. I'm experimenting just like you guys. Near zero experience with this stuff. Just a desperate guy who wants his damn phone working. If one of you guys gets buzbee to make a special version please paste it in here
