Tip: Getting "knock off" effect on any ROM - G2 General

I don't know how many people actually know this, and if this is common knowledge I do apologize, but I thought I'd share how I did it.
Install Screen Off, launch it once to give it administrative rights. Go to Nova Settings, set up a double tap gesture to launch that app, and you have a pretty well-working "knock off" function.

Very nice. Thank you. Hadn't found a good solution for this using PA.

This is a very good solution if in fact, you are using Nova Launcher. The problem I ran into with this is the effect is really fast. I mean that sounds like a nitpicky gripe, but it bothered me immensely that Nova wasn't quite as smooth as the stock launcher and since the phone is so uber fast, this fix is kinda glitchy looking since the screen off speed seems more than doubled. I'm not sure how to explain what I mean, but it bothered me. There are things that I just preferred about the stock launcher. I know that may seem crazy, but to each his own I guess. I would prefer an AOSP ROM with working Netflix using the stock LG launcher with AOKP UI and custom framework. This is why I haven't changed my ROM at this point. I'm picky.

I know, Nova feels hacky. It's a hard tradeoff more smoothest launched I've tried so far is the stock launcher on my 4.4 n4.
I ran aosp for about two days, it wasn't a very good experience. Especially not if your eyes get sore by rough edges. You should try Rayglobe rom. Will reply when I've found a better solution.

Edit:
The knock-off effect appears identical to the LG animation for me. It just simply starts the standard fade-out animation instantly. It should be the same as tapping the status bar twice, up there is default LG behaviour.

Yeah thats a good solution but i prefer the pie way.I m using pacman rom with pie controls, the wake up knock on working and when i want to close the screen i put a power button to pie controls.more easy no hitting the screen

If you do this does a double tap anywhere trigger the action? I double tap to zoom on webpages, so I'd need it restricted to the status bar.

This only applies on home screen

No need for another app if you have tasker installed. Just do a task for System Lock. Then under nova, select that task.

It should work by default for any rom (as far as I'm aware). Double tap to zoom will still work as Nova is a launcher, not an UI. It's an app. Your browser is an app and if you're in your browser, then the app Nova will not take precedence over that open app.

[Q] Disable double press home view?

Hi,
I don't want the home button to give me a view of all my home screens when double pressed. I keep hitting it on accident. Is there a way to disable this?
I searched and searched and cannot find any settings to turn this feature off. There is a setting in the Applications submenu to change the home button double tap to launch an application of your choice, but this will not solve your problem. Short of downloading a replacement launcher home screen, I'm not sure there is any workaround. Just refrain the brain not to hit that button twice.

Would be nice to be able to disable that. it's pretty annoying.
Likely need a new launcher as this feature is probably "baked in" to the BLUR experience! I know that you can disable the "previews" (I think they are called that) in LauncherPro. I know many enjoy GO and ADW as well.

What are you two talking about? Go into Settings>Applications and then into Homescreen double tap. Choose NONE.

They're talking about the utterly useless homescreen overview feature, not the double tap app launcher. Go to the stock Blur launcher, head to the homescreen, then press home again. Behold, a pretty preview feature that doesn't do anything useful (like let you rearrange the screens).
Best solution is to use a different launcher, unfortunately. The Blur home is pretty, but its excessive animations and bloated app drawer make using the phone a much less efficient & pleasant experience than it should be.

Thanks. (It's later now. Lol)
Over engineering. Pull down the notifications bar, pull down the Quickly bar, then select app. I can find it in my app drawer faster than that with just one click and no swipes But to each his own!
OAN: Did anybody check out Vire launcher they documented on xda homepage? It's pretty sweet, but I'm so used to LauncherPro+ that I can't switch to it.
I like it ok but I tend to stick with sense, holo and go.

I think the idea is its supposed to be a solution for accessing app's while in other apps, eg. multi-tasking without going back to the home screen first and then app drawer(which is a minimum of two clicks and possible a swipe or two).
With that said, I think that pie launcher, lmt or something, is a much better solution.

Ahhh kind of like a long home press, except you can specify the apps instead of using recent apps. I'm not that big of a multitasker but that's not a bad idea

HOW TO (3 Methods): Turn off display without using the power button

Good: Double tap any blank area of any home screen
Better: Double tap status bar
Best IMO: Download and install LMT launcher from here to setup PIE controls. If you find the LMT settings intimidating watch this video. It'll walk you through setup. Go to settings>Set gesture input and choose #2. Under the PIE tab select your pie piece and then under advanced command options choose KEY and put the number 26. Now when you access your PIE shortcut labeled "KEY" it'll turn off the display.
Thanks to members trh1341 and _Sofos_ for helping me figure this out.
These are good tips guys. While I knew all of this. It's good someone got the word out a lot of people don't know!

Method #4: Lock/turn off your screen by tapping the Lock Screen App icon from your home screen, app drawer, or recent apps : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kennethcheng.com.lockscreen.free
I used this on all my phones before I got my G2 and it worked flawlessly.
Does the LMT Launcher allow you to hide the stock soft keys?

You can also just wait anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes and it will go off on its own, unless you have it on never turn off but I think it will eventually lol.
I am using nova launcher and double tap to turn on works fine but won't turn off. Double tap on the status bar is too tricky for me to operate on one hand.
Thanks to a xda user, to get it to turn off with double tap you will have to download /screen off/ app from play store and set the double tap quick key in nova to launch the app. Works like charm.

It's also easy to set up a Tasker task, and then call it on double tap from Apex or Nova
Elixir admin works too, but for some reason makes mine less responsive to double tap wakeup about 1/3 of the time
My favorite is Shake Off. A gentle twist or shake tturns the screen off and its adjustable sensitivity and direction options make it easy to keep from having the screen turn off too easily, pretty sure its free too. Very convenient and highly recommended.

[Apex] Vote for doubletap to turn screen off

Hey Guys,
I'm on the CM Nightly 10-23-2013 and i missed the feature to turn off Screen with double Tap. I am a big Fan of the Apexlauncher, so i googled and somebody already did a request to implement a feature to turn of screen with a double tap.
Would be nice if some of you who use Apex too, would chime in and vote for that Feature
Click the Link

I have used Apex for years and love it. Check under "Behavior settings". Under "Gestures" is Double tap desktop. Assign the app Screen off and lock to it. Now you have tap to sleep or knock off. It works flawlessly and may be even better than the stock LG implementation. Works with Nova also.
I'am currently using this solution, but i'am a fan of native solutions which doesn't require a third party app

Yup - its built into the Kernel that's why knock on still works.
While I think it would be a very good option to provide, I currently use double tap to open my app drawer. I also don't use Apex any more. I've converted to Action Launcher, Aviate, and Nova Prime.
Just providing some input though. Apex was my favorite launcher at one time. I moved away because there was a period when it started getting really laggy and buggy. Once I got comfortable with Nova I just never went back.

So then you know nova has the double tap off gesture as well
i want this implemented in apex too. been wanting it since day one. but for now i'm happy with using Lock Screen app and triggering the action with a double tap.

Yes as I said, I use that feature. Works like a champ.
you can already do that, install this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Then go into apex settings and set gestures, double tap, and set it to lunch the app.
Problem solved
Or if you have Greenify, which is one of my default apps. You can do double tap hibernate + lockscreen.
just install any "lock screen" app and assign it for doubletap gesture

Quick tip for rom users

If you cant stand that knock off is gone on your custom rom that you have happily flashed on your g2... ive noticed alot of people asking so here is a few solutions if you already dont have one! Got a better way? Suggest it! Will edit if necessary.
1. If you dont use google now from your home button swiping up... download the app in the link below!
{FOR CYANOGENMOD USERS} Your rom already comes with a toggle for this... accessible from SETTINGS>>INTERFACE>>QUICK LAUNCH SHORTCUTS... obviously slide up and set it as "Screen off" towards the bottom of the list.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en <<
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you have that downloaded you can now swipe up like you would normally access google now... it will now give you the option to set a default for the screen off application, do it and now you can swipe up from anywhere on your device (Even the lockscreen) to turn off your screen without having to touch the buttons on the back! (Now i noticed when i was running an AOKP rom this didnt work every time as due to the fact every time it would shut off it would turn right back on... if thats the case for you try out option 2!
2. [YOU WILL NEED THE SAME APPLICATION AS IN OPTION 1] This is a simple bit, but your rom might not have this capability... if you go to your navbar settings you should be able to enable long press actions for buttons... select any button you'd like and set the long press for the application you have downloaded!
3. [YOU WILL NEED THE SAME APPLICATION AS IN OPTION 1] And lastly your third option... this should be if neither option 1 nor 2 work for your custom rom which they should... This one however is not easily accesible from any screen on your device only your home screen... first things first download that application above, now you download a launcher such as Apex launcher which i would reccomend because it allows this without paying for the full version and i tend to like apex alot better, from there go straight into your apex settings and go to behaviour... check out those gestures and set that application as your gesture! Nova launcher's is pretty self explanitory if you have prime. after that your good to go! Easy accesable screen off techniques you cant live without on the g2, hope this helps some of you!
I have another idea. Use GMD gesture control and use the edge of your screen to turn off the phone, or even double tap the nav bar (the app is ridiculously useful)
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app
Another option for CM Roms is to use the app below which gives you the option to Knock Off from anywhere on the entire home screen when using Apex or Nova and then have a double tap set or any other gesture you like up to execute this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cillinsoft.scrnoff
thanks alot. due to that reason so many people dont want to jump custom rom as like me
GMD Gesture Control - > define 3 finger swipe down gesture anywhere to turn screen off. There you go, most comfortable solution.

My main reason for loving Knockon (and not jumping to any rom) is the wake up feature though. This is the first time that I have an android device where I don't rape the power button just to look at how pretty my lockscreen or launcher is.
