Hello all, I'm currently using a Nexus One on T-Mo but am probably going to jump back to Sprint here soon. I had been looking to get the Evo3D, but fear that it's going to be locked down as the Thuderbolt was. I understand you guy were able to gain root on the Thunderbolt recently, but only because you got an engineering something or other, I don't remember exactly. My question here is, what would the chances have been of the phone being rooted the normal brute force way. Would we have been looking at possibly months or more, or was it just a matter of days. I ask cause if the Evo3D is going to be locked down and may take months or more to crack, I may just go with the Nexus S for now.
Well it looks like HTCs phones are going to be locked up tight. Not really sure about the EVO3D but I wouldn't be surprised if it had a locked bootloader etc.

Yeah... HTC makes me sad all day for locking their bootloaders, samsung is looking more and more attractive. Sammy's phones don't even put up a fight, sometimes getting root before they're even released to general public

Cause the TB wasn't rooted before it came out right?
Samsung is looking attractive just because they don't lock their bootloaders? What kind of logic is that? Look at the Galaxy series, those phones were crap, full of lag, horrible GPS, etc.

Ah, where to begin I'm guessing that you misunderstood what I said, or maybe I worded it wrong. In my previous post I was merely making a gross generalization. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love HTC for their build quality and the fact that my G2 (being over a year old) STILL puts up a decent fight against new devices. What I meant was that given a choice I will always support a manufacturer that keeps their devices unlocked (like samsung). Yes, samsung has had some pretty dismal failures in the phone department, but what about the Nexus S 4G? Not to mention the fact that according to a few websites, they seem to be learning from their mistakes and putting out great devices recently (matter of opinion though). I can't really see how my logic is flawed for wanting MY device to have an unlocked bootloader, it's just a standard I'm developing. As far as the thunderbolt getting root before release.... stuff happens unexpectedly and I'm glad the TB got root so soon. Newer HTC devices however are looking at much better lockups on their bootloaders though and I would rather not have to risk a brick to flash my heart out. But these are all my own opinions, you have yours but these are mine.

I was just referring to the first "Galaxy" set that came out. The S 4G, S II, and their releases this year have been stellar. But neither of those are on VZW . I would snatch up the SII in a second if it was on VZW.

I'm in the same boat. I'm not going to buy a phone that's locked up tight. HTC better learn real quick that there are a lot of people like this. I was going to buy a honeycomb tablet if they came out with one because based on their phones I figured it would be pretty open. Now it looks like I'll have to go elsewhere. Maybe since a tablet won't be tied to a carrier they'll be more relaxed. I hope anyway...

It seems we've gone a bit off topic. I have been reading all the comments and have learned that Sammy isn't doing what HTC is starting to do with locking their bootloaders, something I didn't know before this thread, good to know. But the question I presented hasn't really been answered yet. How long, rough gestimation, would it take to crack the bootloader of the new phones HTC is coming out with. Are we talking weeks or months or more. I know this a question that can't be easily answered with a specific answer, but I'm looking more for how likely they are to be cracked in a timely manner. I'm not a hacker, cracker or code breaker so I really don't even know where to begin with trying to answer this question, hence why I put it forth here, on the forum of a phone that was locked and got unlocked hoping a dev could give me some info on weather getting the forthcoming Evo3D is a good idea for someone who want's to root the phone. I am however leaning back towards the Nexus s 4G because of this thread, but since money won't allow that at the moment, I'm exploring my options until the time I can afford a new phone.
The thunderbolt was rooted becuase we reverted to an older leaked rom which allowed us to bypass the whole signed bootloader. (I think) You might want to look into the incredible s which was released several months ago and has yet to me cracked. The security measures taken to lock down the G2 are not the same as the ones used on newer HTC devices. I don't think we'll be seeing any permanent root access HTC in a long time. Months at the very least.

Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for. Sad news indeed. I'm guessing the Nexus S 4G is where I'm headed then, unless a Galaxy S 2 is slated to come out on sprint anytime soon that is. I'd really like to get a root-able, dual core, high resolution, bad ass phone if I'm going to be upgrading from my N1.

I've been reading around about this (disappointing) news of HTC's lockdown using signed bootloaders, etc. and from what I have read, it seems like the crackers have indicated they are going to have a helluva time. A few tweets from jcase's twiiter page (whose opinions I personally value, YMMV):
If you want root, don't buy an yet to be rooted phone
[email protected] signed recovery, signed kernel, signed hboot, and write protection. won't buy [email protected] devices like that

Looks pretty dreary for new HTC phones.
Droid, which has signed bootloader, is still locked, and it's pretty long on the market. It's a matter of years, if not eternity. It's f***ing hard to crack those keys.
What I don't understand is why HTC is doing this. You might think that it's the carriers pressuring them, but if Sammy, Sony Erricson, and Moto are or are soon going to be releasing phone without locked bootloaders, why does HTC feel the need to start now when they haven't in the past?

Is anyone else thinking that they might hold off on rooting there Evo lte? I mean, amazing camera, beats audio, screen shots, the latest sense, and ics? What extra purpose would rooting do? It has me thinking i might hold off on rooting my evo when i get it, but was wondering if anyone else had the same thoughts?
Yeah, the stock experience will be great, but I'll be needing root to remove bloat. Just seeing one sprint app on my phone makes me want to kill a squirrel or something...
rooting doesnt necessarily mean going straight to aosp. especially right at the beginning there will be root + stock to remove bloat while keeping all the Sense perks. I know im gonna be flashing a stock rom
i'll be rooting not only to remove apps i don't want; but also to tether.

Totally agree on that however I do see one large benefit to rooting... Battery life. That's what drove me to rooting in the first place. I would love a new kernel, SetCPU, and a stock-like ROM that had no bloatware.

Never really thought of the extras, I rooted my evo on the first day i got it to sense 3.0, never really been on stock longer than a day, i forgot you had to pay for tethering. lol, the only sprint app i keep is sprint zone to check my usage and upgrade even though i have unlimited. So i guess i will be rooting. I guess im gonna use my early upgrade, the galaxy iii kinda looks cheaply built.
In order of importance WiFi tether, landscape rosie, custom kernel (I got ideas), restore angry bird scores, and restore my lake navigation app (no longer in market)

Was just reading a thread in one X forum pointing out how HTC is now essentially using the dev unlock 'may' void your warranty to avoid doing any repairs to unlocked phones. Even HW repairs, pretty shady. It doesn't matter so much in the US, as we generally handle issues thru service providers, but I thought it was an informative read about HTCs policies moving forward.

Wasn't this an AT&T only thing? That they are making HTC lock the bootloader and not allowing dev unlock?
Part right. Yra. AT&T is forcing HTC to make unavailable HTCdev unlock. The point of that thread is that HTC realized that if they allow for bootloader unlock they can ignore any warrantee claim of any unlocked or relocked phone, even if issue is busted power button or screen. Read the thread. You'll see what I mean.

Does anyone here know if the HTC EVO LTE for sprint will be rootable, or will it at least work with HTCDev? Thanks.
Any answer to that question will be a complete guess. That will not be answerable until the phone comes out.
It can be assumed that ALL android phones are rootable. Some just take more work then others. Other then that, we won't know anything until it exists.

But I just decided that I'm going to preorder the phone and cross my finger that some root will come out for the phone. How close are we to gaining S-off/root? The only threads that are being posted in in the past 2 weeks are the rom threads, and those are for the unlocked phones only.
So, how close are we to getting our phones rooted and such?

So there's literally nothing that can happen until verizon allows s-off? I'm probably completely incorrect in thinking this so correct me if so but, isn't s-off just unlocking the bootloader? Motorola phones always have their bootloader locked, but they have plenty of roms available, as well as root...

no unlocking does not give s-off, but when unlocked you can flash roms and kernels using adb, you can't flash radios though. with s-off you don't need to use adb or a computer to flash, and you can flash anything
basicly all you need adb for is to flash the boot.img of the rom after flashing with recovery

Yea it doesn't make sense, it flat out pisses me off as I'm sure the rest of you guys. I don't have the damn phone, but I really want it for the form factor that it is and phablet that it's not. I mean, hell the guys over on the gsiii got that unlocked, not sure if it was VZ or the developers over there but it's rocking and rolling, no reason why they shouldn't allow us the same.
Even their stupid data plans are out now which make it so convenient to share your data, legally tether in other words, so it's not like were just looking to root it to take advantage of their phones. The Crapple 5 is on the shelf, so what's the hold up VZ. Sorry just frustrated with those clowns at VZ.

I love the phone. It's absolutely better than my original Incredible, but I would love this phone all that much more if I could root it. I don't care about S-OFF or unlocked bootloader as much as having root and being able to do some of the stuff I could on my Incredible. Like Andy has said, as soon as we get any form of root, even temp root, we'll have S-OFF. We just need that little step first.
I gotta say I feel really bad for you guys. I was strongly considering this phone, even though I pre-ordered a GS3 to keep my unlimited data in tact. I planned to either sell the GS3 on eBay or exchange it for the Dinc 4G but I ended up sticking with the GS3 out of laziness. I was jealous that you guys had an unlocked bootloader from launch but what a dirty move on Verizon's part making HTC take it down. Really horrible.
So I've been following progress here ever since. I'm glad there are people doing work on it, as perhaps someday I'll have the upgrade I originally wanted; one I can comfortably hold. I basically have to two-hand this thing.
Here's to hope for the future!

^ That is exactly why I wanted the Dinc4g. The signal is solid, it's very fast - both processor and 4G internet ...and it fits in my pocket nicely.
it. just. needs. root.
It maybe because there is no htcdev unlock too. I plan on getting this phone, but my upgrade isn't for awhile. I'm confident it will get s-off soon, but i'll enjoy my S-OFF Inc2 until this phone is S-OFF.
even though this phone is pretty nice i wouldn't pick it up down the road... it's a ghost town for forums and with no root and half the apps not utilizing the google intended extended menu there is a black bar a lot of the time using the app. If you want something small and locked down the Razr M smacks this around i think. I'm tempted to go to it just for the soft keys alone.
Hi, I currently own HTC One X..would like to upgrade to 1080p screens..
was thinking of getting Droid DNA as it is cheap and affordable.. Is it worth buying now?
I know the phone is awesome...But I am worried about the development.
I would atleast use the phone for another year. Development is one of the main criteria for me.
Thank you
I was in the same boat as you mulling over the DNA or the ONE X+. After noticing the resale value was less for the better offering (DNA) I got it. Development is above average with 3 major builds having multiple offerings (Sense 4+, Sense 5 & AOSP/CM) Everything pretty much works in all roms except BT headset audio for cars in AOSP which I'm bummed about because I recently discovered my inner AOSP and would rather be running it than Sense but its a dealbreaker for me as I'm an audio enthusiast. If you do decide to upgrade another obvious choice is the ONE but it will be a bit pricier outright as it is still a new phone. The screen on it is smaller but it has boomsound speakers. The DNA has curved glass like the OX. it has a soft touch back which I prefer over the metal of the ONE.

The DNA will lose some developers to the One, but its safe to say it will keep a handful; at least through their 2 year contract. The development right now is pretty strong and I'm confident we will have a 4.3 and 5.0 port.

Perosnally I think you're the only one who can make the decision you're looking for on some of the questions you've asked. The DNA is a phenomenal phone and it's still holding it's own with current phones. However, when the new snapdragon phones get released it will be much slower comparitively. Developement is fine and we have been getting many many ports from the HTC One so as long as that stays true then we should have no trouble getting updated versions of android. Also keep in mind that HTC has said that our phone will be getting updated to 4.2 and you can assume it will get one more update to 4.3. With the Developer Version of the One being released we can also speculate that we will benefit from that as well.
I would personally hold out unless you got a steal on a DNA. I was going to hold out but we took advantage of the free DNA's that verizon was giving out. Very happy with my decision but at this point you have the One coming to Verizon as well as the Butterfly S which may be the DNA 2.
If its a choice between phones available now I would go with the DNA over the ONE just because its kinda the same phone minus the boomsound, and I don't mean that spec for spec but generally speaking. If you wait there will always be better options but you have release dates to consider as well as contracts. DNA can be used on prepaid GSM so that's a plus for no contract people. Also you can always sell your current phone for a new phone that you aim to buy used. After selling my EVO LTE I only paid $150 for the DNA so its a smart way to always get the phone you desire for cheaper. I've never owned multiple superphones but maybe ill get an S4 unlocked when the price comes down a bit.
The only thing I would buy the one for is zoe. I'm no professional photographer so the 8 megapixelcamera the DNA has is fine for me. Um other than and that it comes with stock sense5 the DNA and the one are similar. Honestly I would wait for the phone that's supposedly the one and the DNA combined, if anything

Thank you

Get DNA. U wont regret it. Advise from a fellow indian
HTC ONE is priced highly and it has build issues.
As far as rom dev is concerned, DNA is best positioned among all htc phones if devs stay with it.
We have sense 4+ roms like viper, sense5 port, and whole host of aosp roms. Should be getting sense5 officially atleast as well.
Hell i have compiled 3 roms namely jellybeer, slimrom, baked
We have all major roms also. Chk orig. android section.

Hey guys, I still got the good ol' HD2 or should I say I got two working and one touchscreen defective HD2?
Is the Droid DNA a successor of the HD2?
I'm lovin' this old companion but I think it's time to move on.
What about the battery, is it detachable?
edit: Yeah, I see, it's not removable. What does this mean? How complex is it to remove the battery?

You'd have to open the phone up, not super easy. Buy why would you want to get at the battery.

So the phone is that good, that there's ne reason to reboot it hard via removing the battery? Great.
Ummm one question, maybe because of my english comprehension: BT Headset Audio isn't working with CM10.1 JB4.2.2 So what's that meaning? I won't be able to use my BT Headset for calls? Any Chances for a fix or finding the cause of this?

If you need to hard reboot you hold the power button for 10 seconds, just like every other device with a non removable battery.
And yes, your headset won't work fie now. There's a good chance it will be fixed eventually.

Nothing like the HD2 really... That would be the Evo or Thunderbolt really... Plus didn't the HD2 run winmo?
That's why I'll try to fix my fellow HD2, but it's old, even the Thunderbolt and Evo are kinda old. I want to buy a new device, use it till it's exhausted like the HD2 (Old digitizer died, replaced it, now it's dead again, or the buttons are bad).
The HD2, WinMo6.5 from stock. The question is: Is there an OS the HD2 couldn't handle? But this discussion belongs somewhere else.
They are starting to crack down now on how OTA's Will be downloaded and used...

It'll be like the apple system, you have to have a shsh blob unique to your device so you can restore to older firmware, just a guess, the brilliant minds will figure it out somehow. Don't be scared... let's be positive!

Well, now instead of uploading the entire file, people can just upload the decrypted image files. Problem solved.
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Nothing more. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.
HTC is really turning me away with the lack of SD card slot, non removable battery, and now this. Yea, I'm sure our talented devs will be able to overcome this obstacle, but when will HTC stop trying to make their devices more and more secure!!?? I had bought nothing but HTC phones for the last 7 years! A few months back though I decided to make my white Evo LTE (Also have a black one that I pre-ordered) a backup phone and purchase a Note 2, since the HTC One didn't impress me and I had new phone fever, which I always catch every 10-14 months. This was a big change for me! I've been using nothing but HTC since my WinMo days, and HTC was the only brand Android phone I've owned!! I was shocked at how easy Samsung is to root. After rooting, I searched for hours to see if there was anything else that I needed to do before flashing. I'm so used to worrying about achieving S-Off that it just seemed to quick and easy to already be done, and I was just certain that I had to be missing something! I had heard that Samsung doesn't lock down their phones like HTC does, but just had to make sure before moving on. Anyway, I honestly expected to really miss HTC and quickly regret my purchase. I have to say though, the Note 2 is by far my favorite Android phone that I've owned! Still though, I'm really hoping to see HTC announce a phone with a mid 5" display, SD card slot, AND a removable battery!! I've read some rumors about upcoming phones, and I've already got my hopes up! I think HTC giving Verizon the J Butterfly (Droid DNA) was a Huge mistake!! HTC has gotta start putting their phones on EVERY carrier! Not only that, but they've gotta give the customers the features that they want! Lastly, put an end to this locking bootloaders and making OTA's more difficult to share/flash!! If the carrier wants to lock the bootloader, then let them do it (like Verizon and AT&T both have done previously)!! HTC has to start becoming more dev friendly though, as that's a big part of the Android community!! Sure, there are users who never flash and have no idea what S-Off even means, so having an unlocked bootloader won't affect them in any way whatsoever anyways. They'll have no clue whether it's locked or not, nor will it matter to them! The users who do modify their phones and do want their bootloader unlocked will be much more likely to buy an HTC phone knowing that it isn't locked down!! Heck, the Droid DNA is having trouble even gaining root access after its last update!! I know a dev, who's roms I(and I'm sure many of you did as well) used to run on my OG Evo and Evo 3D, who has a DNA and is anything but happy with HTC right now!
Anyway, sorry for the rant, I'm just a huge HTC fan and have been for many many years, and I'm just truly disappointed by their approach to the Android community at trying to make their phones less developer and user friendly!!! If they would just give the users what they want then I think we'd see HTC battling Samsung for the #1 spot instead of struggling to keep their head above water like they are now. I would LOVE to see HTC be the top phone manufacturer, but I'm afraid that day won't come unless they start to loosen up their restraints........

I switched from the Evo LTE to the GS4 and haven't regretted it for a second. The One looks like a really nice phone, but I've decided that I'm done with HTC for good. The GS4 is ridiculously easy to root and it's so nice not having to mess around with s-off and different hboots and all the other extra crap that comes with HTC phones.

Not a Samsung fan-boy by any means, however, after a long relationship with HTC, I decided to try the GS4. Very Happy!
Still have my LTE as a media player.
My main gripe with Samsung and there amoled screens is the blue tint, I cannot stand it. And as much as HTC has been letting me down more and more, I can't deal with how awful the colors are on the Samsung screens.

I've had every htc device dating back to the 6700 apache. To the evo lte. Lots in between Wm to android. Looks like this is the end for me. I'm jumping ship on my upgrade in Feb if dev can't get a work around. No SD and no removable battery already left bad feelings. This just is the steam on the pile of poop

I like being able to modify the things I purchase as I please.
I've been happy with HTC (my last two phones), but I will probably move on for my next purchase.
