Does Google Chrome eat a lot of data? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed that Default browser eats up a lot more data than I'd like it to, so I switched to Opera Mini, which is absolutely amazing in how it takes up next to no data..however Opera Mini is pretty terrible. Is there some in between ground with Chrome?

Chrome beta with data compression then...

yep, Chrome do eats a lot of data like any other standard browser. Like Lim suggest, try Chrome Beta with data compression and see how its goes.

[Q] Web browsers for the vibrant...

I know about sky fire, fire fox, dolphin. But honestly it doesn't seem like any of these are a better alternative to the stock web browser. Dolphins ability to view desktop pages is cool though. Can anyone recommend a browser that is actually all around better than stock or does such a thing exist?
XScope is not bad. I use DolphinHD myself.
http://androidandme.com/2010/04/app...-the-fastest-alternative-browser-for-android/
I like Miren Browser the best out of all I have tried. It's a very simple UI with tabbed browsing, and I find it to be the fastest of the browsers I have used (I'm sure many people would disagree with this, but on my phone this is what I've found). Hope this helps!
xscope and miren are the best. xscope is due for another major update.....cant wait.
My vote is going to have to go with Miren as well. I have been using it for the past week and a half and i have to say, it's slightly faster, and it fits well with my blue theme. Simple UI, advanced features when I need it, all around solid browser. Dolphin HD seemed a little slow for me all the time, but then again, other people may have diff experiences.
To me it's a toss-up between Dolphin HD 4 and Miren. Both are fast and feature packed. Dolphin mini was ok but lacked add-ons that I use with HD.
Opera Mobile 10 seems to work best for download sites such as filesonic, etc. but is a little slower and usually re-directs you to mobile websites even when setting the 'Mobile View' option off.
Xscope 6.x seemed to be the most feature-packed and perhaps the most bloated. It was considerably slower in loading AND rendering pages than all the other I've used.
Don't even waste your time with Firefox - it's the slowest of them all and has a lot more development to go before it can be a usable browser on android.
Skyfire is different than the above because it uses proxy servers to render content so it appears faster because of this and also has video capabilities. Since it doesn't connect to websites directly and instead uses proxies you may experience slow connections or no connections (happened to me a few times). The main advantage is you can view flash video content from sites like CNN.COM and ESPN.COM. If you are running Android 2.2 or higher you can view flash content directly and therefore Skyfire it not really needed.
Opera Mini works similar to Skyfire in that it uses proxy servers to view websites but doesn't have video capabilities (last time I checked).
I don't really like browsers that use proxies (UCWEB is another), I want a direct connection to websites just like on my PC.
I haven't really found the 'perfect android browser' since I sometimes I find a site that works better with one browser than the other which is why I keep Dolphin HD, Miren and Opera Mobile. I guess my main browser would have to be Dolphin HD.

Dolphin mini is my favorite. its about the same speed for me on the vibrant but on my girls mt3g slide it is super fast. dolphin mini not dolphin hd
Opera mobile is my fav. Reminds me of Firefox for desktop.
My second is Firefox mobile.it jusy doesn't seem as fast as Opera IMO.

I have a little problem. I love the opera mobile browser....but each time when I am browsing and decided to switch to another application on my vibrant, for e.g messages, yahoo messenger e.t.c. when I try returning back to opera mobile to continue from where I stopped using the task manager it just open opera mobile afresh with all the tabs I was reading gone. does any one know the solution to this?
xScope is fast but the UI is hideous. (no offence but I really hate the UI).
I was using Dolphin Mini for a very long time, it's lighter and faster than HD. I've just switched to Opera Web recently but I haven't decided if I want to keep it yet.

Are you using any task killer? If you are, stop using it.
If programs still get killed too fast, get minfree memory manager, set it to a value that gives you more room for apps running at the same time.
Maxthon was posted in the main android dev forum on here a couple weeks ago. I have been using it some and like it so far.

I use Dolphin HD and love it. As a LastPass user, it has the built in browser plugin that is essential for me.
Try the Miren browser, it's nice, can do flash just like the stock google browser, and home pages when opened up.

[Q] Opera Mobile 11.1

I use (used ) Opera Mobile 11.1 .
It's a great brower, with everything I could wish, but it seems unstable to me:
- Sometimes the standard-settings are deleted, so the phone asks to open links with browser a, browser b etc. again, although I have set Opera as standard.
- If I multitask (i.e. holding home button, pressing home button, selecting app from status bar), the browser sometimes shuts down, and when I restart Opera, not all tabs are restored. EDIT: same with standard browser.
- Browser needed reinstall several times, because it wouldn't start, freezes at "Opera Mobile" logo.
- Opera doesn't support cookies, so you have to log in every time again
Are there other people with this problem, or does anyone know how to solve it?
What will be the second best browser if I like Opera Mobile (not Opera Mini derp )?
I use standard ROM latest version on a Xperia Neo, non-rooted.
Im having trouble on the latest UK Rom fir the arc if I install any extra browser, but it only starts to happen once I set one as the default then all sorts of things happen black screens freezes keep having to uninstall the downloaded browsers have tried opera and a couple more. Back to standard browser again :-(

No problems at all with any of the browsere.

opera mobile is my main browser (& that's all)
maybe have some glitches, but why i'm stay:
1. among fastest browser (i found maxhton is the fastest yet not most stable)
2. best text reflow (but not for photo/picture reflow)
3. easier multi tab management (easier to reach, tab at bottom, rather than dolphin on top & very small or stock that i think very long way to reach)
4. rightest download server application (expecially server that will popup when start downloading, like multi-upload etc)
5. very lightweight
my setup:
1. depend on website, i'm switching between mobile or desktop (mainly mobile, desktop as last resort)
2. flash on click (don't really need it, rather use proper apps)
3. navigation bar & status bar always on
4. single column view off
5. text wrapping on
when my best browsing experience on my lappy, i'm using my arc browser (opera of course) for ad hoc info, find some idea, download small size file (<50mb maybe, that needed by my arc, too lazy to plug in my arc to my lappy), before-bed browsing & other simple task. don't expect too much from 4" browsing experience, it will never replace real computer browsing experience. use proper application for exec task (like youtube, twitter, fb, email, vevo, stream radio, games etc)
Netfront browser works really well.
Better than most.
Plus it has some cool UI features and great looks.
Also fast and low on ram.
https://market.android.com/details?...roid.nflifebrowser.lite&feature=search_result
Opera (not mini) is the best for me, by far. It has great synchronization with my desktop, smoothest scrolling, good loading speeds, good multitab controls. The downside is it uses a lot of resources so you should have a latest generation 1GHz smartphone or dual core with at least 512MB Ram, preferably more when you want to multitask.

Is it more stable than Opera Mobile 11? Any cons?
& forgot to say what the biggest reason why i'm stick to opera mobile: link press/selection prediction are most true & auto zoom when more than 1 link pressed at the same time. other browser, either you're sniper, or really have small finger, or will doing much zoom in&out.
when not the most eye pleasure ui, opera just most matured browser that easier to use no matter what.
I have used both of them (Opera and Dolphin) for a few weeks, and I conclude:
- Dolphin is loaded with options and functions
- Opera has nice animations, is easier to use, but slower for large pages and faster and smoother for normal/small pages.
So I decided to make Dolphin my main browser, and use Opera for the quick browsing sessions. None of them is the best, though they're all way better than the stock browser.

Try reinstalling if you have not done it already, or phone reset as a final step.
opera don't have latest interface from google (or youtube), but i found it usefull since i just want google as search engine, not really care what the appearence.
turn off opera turbo to high quality image (turn on will save some bandwidth-if you really care & save some time loading page).
turn off navigation bar to hiding lower bar (menu key to popup). but i personally turn on to fastest access to all function (tab, back, stop, refresh). maybe we can start customizing nav bar for better appearance?
since i'm not big fan of phone browsing (mainly on my lappy, i'm just using dedicated applications for specific purpose since they are optimize to the screen phone (eg: tapatalk, ym, fb, youtube, streaming radio, games etc). so far opera give rightest way to browse. i can rightly download from download server, better than other browser link selection prediction, best text reflow (better than stock), light & fast, tab management at bottom (tired with dolphin far top, small tab) - meeting my requirement to mobile browsing.

personally i don't know what is the real benefit of opera mini (i just found one, better graphics reflow). unless the connection really slow (30kbps?), use other browser. overall i feel opera mini slower than opera mobile, less function & less engine. downloading files also slower on mini (& many times end-up with error).
here on latest firmware it chrashes very soon
going to use another browser

Browsers

Lets decide what launcher to use
No browser is smooth if you don't tweak the phone, it is a **** phone, no chance flash will work also.. only opera's are smooth on non rooted **** phones
Waiting for a tweaked browser specially for us
1. Boat Browser
I use it right now, very fast startup and great, maybe(sure) you will like it
Flash support, this is based on fastness, while not missing anything
Save Data starts here(if you still want to browse, others have crappy data savers)
___________________________________________
2. Opera Mobile
Very smooth, use this if you need no flash, but warning: Facebook sucks on it....
Downloads are the most reliable here, use this for long downloads
Java and flash lite go best with this one, but flash player won't work
Very slow startup!!!
3. Opera Mini
I am sure you heard of it...
You will get the fastest experience on 2G, with the crappiest image quality and the most smooth browsing ever
This is not a full one!!! You get the same quality as on 10 years grand-grand-parents-aged phones
______________________________________________(and here it ends...)
4. Dolphin HD
Absolutely awesome, but do not get it do background when downloads are "starting"...
I have a bug on it, made it useless, can't open any link...
5. Dolphin Mini
Fast start, cool UI, but, like any Mini browsers, I guarantee you will not have more than half of the screen usable...
6. Boat Mini
This is a "blue Dolphin Mini", the base of the Boat browser, but same half screen **** like Dolphin Mini... not optimized for small screens....
Probably a market search would be better than this... but they only say the good parts
More on the way
Suggestions are welcome

its worth the revisit. still haven't used a browser faster than this. now that flash is working really well on it, this will become the fav. again. getting tired of stock or ICS+ browser FC. I have boat also. its a nice browser, ill admit.
Opera Next (beta) is not bad either
Had a look on the Opera site. Saw you could download Opera Next (beta).
I must say real smooth and not bad.
Will give it a try for a while
what is Opera Next beta? what are new features or difference from opera mobile on android? I might check it out.
edit: seems like its just a new opera mini. opera mini usually doesn't have flash support. I saw opera mini next. is that the one you talking about?

Really fast and good to get flash support.
And I think Opera Mobile is the only browser that you can use the little search button on XDA.

yeah, opera mobile always yells the fastest sunspider results. you see the screen flashing so fast on opera. on any other browser the test seems to take its time. plus I've gotten even faster time than you showed on opera before.
I had many freezes with the stock browser, I installed opera mobile and freezes no longer occur, this browser is very fast and fluid, is my favorite.
opera mobile needs the hardware acceleration and smoothness of opera mini next currently has. Opera mobile's scrolling is way too choppy in framerate.
digressing a little from the main topic... does Opera have adblock extension support for android?
not sure exactly what you mean. if you mean within the browser itself, not sure. haven't seen anything like that. But if rooted, you could just use AdAway and it'll block all ads period. works very well and speeds up browsers even more because it not loading flash ads.
Sorry, yeah, I meant extension for the browser itself. I tried AdAway, it works, but as soon as I add more hosts file (totalling roughly 8megs of hosts file), the app crashed with out of memory error (which surprised me because it works on my samsung galaxy s phone running CM7). So currently I am manually copying the hosts file from my linux to ATP's /system/etc; with just minor alterations to make - a little of a hassle.
Thanks for reply.
Op are you sure this update on Opera Mobile gives us flash.I looked at it last night but the update said nothing about flash. It did say something about having better support for the Samsung 7.7 or something.Another thing what is up with all the new permissions Opera wants now (being able to take video & pictures of what's on your phone)..they're getting a lot of complaints about it too.I love Opera but what gives?
Yes Opera Mobile 12 have working flash on ICS 4.0 DEVICE.
Maybe Iam late to the party but with Opera i can run a video in the browser and the open a second window and i continue to hear the audio from the video playing on the first window.

Opera mobile freezing after update
I have been lucky enough to have no problems until now with my Prime or the apps on it.
Unfortunately this update has made my Opera Mobile unusable. Within three minutes it freezes, usually after I've clicked on a link.
I've restarted the tablet to no avail. Will uninstall and reinstall Opera now.
Update: After reinstall the freezes continue, this time even sooner. Anyway, this problem along with their new permissions makes it an easy choice for me. I'm looking for something to replace it. Currently using Dolphin HD but keeping my options open.

It entirely depends on what phone you're using, what you want to use it for and what you think is most important, e.g. speed, feature rich, etc.
IMO Opera Mini is the best, but that's cause I'm using a G1 and it's the only decent viable option.
I don't know about many others therefore, but for HTML5 Chrome tops it, for speed I don't see why Opera Mini shouldn't beat everything (it uses compression). If you have a decent phone with ICS+ I reckon Chrome's probably the best.

Be careful. Check out this thread for how browsers track you. It's an invasion of privacy and it wastes bandwidth, battery power, and CPU cycles. I know Boat Browser is specifically mentioned in that thread and I'd stay away from it. Opera Mini does have the option to send all of your data through Opera's servers so be aware of that. QQ Browser looks to have some intrusive permissions so I wouldn't trust it either.
