I know that the camera is decent. Heck look at this guy's album on Google+

No matter how hard I try, the pictures I take, almost always look washed out. In most of the reviews the camera was praised for colour accuracy and reproduction. I'm not talking about perfectly lit scenarios but more or less like the ones I've posted above. Do you guys leave yours at Auto , Intelligent Auto etc. Whatever tips and tricks you can share I'm sure will greatly benefit the community.
[I know there is a thread regarding the slow shutter and focus but that's not the point over here.]
Cheers !
Mine look as good if not better. I use AI most, normal and manual otherwise. Focus isn't slow for me, shutter speed regarding moving items in less than full blast light are and get blurry easy. Software fixes needed. My still shots are incredibly brilliant and accurate for a smartphone camera.

Thanks for your reply. The cat wasn't pleased though .
my two cents
I just took two pictures, one using normal and one using IA. the IA is FAR better for focus, speed of shot, etc. But there is some serious work that needs to be done on the software for this camera.

I personally feel on the stock camera app , the auto ISO is a little bit too sensitive, causing unnecessary noise. I usually set the ISO to 800 (the max it allows in manual control) and the shot turns out significantly better.
Using IA pictures are somewhat better ! . BTW can someone modify the camera to save the settings ? because it always starts on Normal mode !
I used Intelligent Auto for the pics of my Spigen Case, seems to have worked well.
These pics are actually lower quality than the ones on my computer because there was probably some compression done during uploading/
Does anyone know of a way to make the IA setting stick? Every time I leave the camera app I have to mess with settings to get it back. I've tried just hitting the home button and leaving the app open but it reverts. Annoying! !
I agree about always leaving it in hdr mode but I also can't find a way to set it to stick

I came from the HTC One and that camera was a joke, i used the lenovo super camera and always had better results, apparently it works on the G2 also, its a big improvement over the stock camera from what I've seen so far. Ill probably get a better look at it tomorrow during the day.

Edit: took some pictures around the house, major improvement folks.
I'm going to Paris in about a month and will take dslr camera as main photo device, but I will also take pictures with G2.
For various shots I find iA and night mode in low light fine, but what mode do you recommend for city sights? Is it sports in the day and night mode in low light or should I use iA and will be fine?

I was browsing the SGSII i9000 dev threads and found this little jem, which is now supported on the i777. What this will do is enable you to be able to get rid of Sammy's nasty contrast settings and fix banding, which it does beautifully.
All credit's go to supercurio!
You can also download it in market as Voodooscreentuning.
*after doing this and adding the roboto font, I got to say i'm very pleased with the way the SGSII looks. I've been a little upset about the way it was calibrated. Never understood why devices don't come professionally calibrated, tv's out of the box for the matter as well. I suppose they want to exaggerate color saturation , contrast and what not to give it that "pop".
Here is the link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241590
and to thank supercurio, I will honor him like this kid did in memory of steve jobs by shaving your face into my head!

Only difference I noticed was the sharpness changed....
Really? Wow, it's clear as night and day. I'm running unnamed too. When you use the app you can see right there that the gradient is all banded looking while on samsung settings, it is totally obvious when you switch to native.
Supercurio is a beast!

I did notice that, but I also noticed the sharpness on pictures seemed to have blurred. That may just be a by product to fix the banding. I'm no screen calibrator.
exactly when you watch movies you will notice that their is no more artifacts, because when you artificially add/enhance contrast/sharpness you create noise it becomes apparent when you are watching movies on your phone. So what you see now is a calibrated native experience. I do graphic design and invested a lot of money on sensors to calibrate my monitor and TVs. It makes a world of difference when you get it right. I notice it most when watching a scene where there is a lot of shadows, the blacks don't crush out all the dark grays.

That's something I never really noticed in the first place with movies. Everything just looked crisp.
The app is cool, but I would like a little more control as opposed to 2 buttons. Know what i mean? At any rate, it's free, and you can NEVER hate on free
I agree, more options is probably the one common denominator we share. From his thread this is going to be "huge". That little app took him 4 months of calibrations so I think he is going in the right directions. Curio is the most OCD person I have ever met, which is a good thing in this case! LOL
* I did notice when i got the phone that things looked a little cartoonie! I was still flattered with the screen. I love how everything is a little more natural to the eye.
FYI for those using CM7 on the AT&T SGS2: support will be coming later next week for our device name. Right now it will show as "model not recognized" when you try and run it.
This app is nice. Kudos to SuperCurio

I think it sticks. I just rebooted and it looks like it's still working.

Yes you hit native. If you notice the gradient it looks less banded. Trust me super curio had done a lot of work on this, he is a legend. If you dont notice anything then you really don't need the app. It works you just aren't that particular about the calibration. SOme people are some people are not.

I think that most people don't realize is that thanks to the pentile display pictures don't look as good as they really are, if you transfer your pics to your computer you will see how good they truly are..
I would say that 75% (or maybe more) of the pictures I take with my photon are pretty good.. and 25% are great!
Using apps like Camera ZOOM FX, Camera 360 ultimate and HDR+ (not really a fan of the Vignette app)
You can improve your results.

in my opinion its best to take the picture without any effects and add the effect after with a program or something cause think about it this way ,take a picture in black and white (or any other effect ) and you lose some of the details about the picture that you never get back !
I like the camera on the Photon but I find that my battery life starts plummeting when I'm walking around snapping shots here and there all day. I don't know if it's the camera or maybe just the increased time the screen is on to take pictures. I try to keep my brightness as low as possible. Either way, I don't have to carry a separate camera on me to take pictures so I'm happy. Just need to remember to bring the charger.

The blur is probably because a phone's shape doesn't lend itself to taking a shot AND holding the phone still. Also, the sensor is teensy tiny, and it doesn't have a very fast "shutter speed". So, it's like taking pics with an SLR in dim light with a 1/30 second shutter: it's going to have motion blur w/o a stand. If you want crystal clear shots, use a vise/stand of some kind.
Maybe Canon's or Nikon's next pro-sumer DSLR will make/receive calls, texts, and play Angry Birds.
I use CameraZoomFX which lets me prop the phone and 'tell' the camera to take the picture hands-free. Those shots are always very clear. Handheld shots, not so much.

Oh will be nice to have a call with a 70-200 2.8 in hand
Okay, I'm lost....
Can anyone who still had pics prior to the leaks and NOW have one of the leaks post comparison pics? I mean seriously, as crisp as the photos are on GB, I can't see how there's such a need for enhancement to the razr's photo quality that it warrants a full thread. lol I'm still on a totally stock GB rom (anxiously biting my nails waiting for the update) and I'm ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHED at how crisp and detailed the camera's photos are.
Lol. Calls will be short with that lens on there. It would be funny though, seeing how huge people's arms get from holding a 4 kilo phone all day. They'd look like hermit crabs.
yeah its with ics leaks .204 let me look at my fb pictures maybe i got one with GB
i found one with GB
BTW - I've tried all of the "pro" camera apps available, and Camera FV-5 is easily the best one.
As to pictures on ICS vs GB, at least on .79, there isn't a huge change. It's all in the app you use.
The stock camera app on ICS seems to focus better prior to capture.
A good camera app should be able to take the same quality pic on GB as it would on ICS unless there was a flaw in the camera drivers under GB, which I don't think there was.
The Razr seems to have a decent sensor, but cheap / small optics. Don't get me wrong, it does take pretty good shots, but not like you'd see on a newer device with bigger, higher quality lenses. The sensor is only half of the battle, but people give the megapixel count all of their attention.
Some of the newer cams (like the OneX) have better optics and you can tell the difference right away. Plus a bigger lens helps keep noise down in dark shots.
I've been using my Rezound to take lots of pictures and I like the HTC camera app. So I'm wondering what would be comparable to it to use with an AOSP variant.
One feature I would like to have that HTC doesn't is some type of manual focus. Maybe something that will focus in small steps + or - would be nice.
Thanks!

Vignette is a good camera app. It's also on sale on the market right now for $.99. Go check it out!
I also use vignette. Still not as good as HTC's camera app, but looks better than the default CM9 one.
Thanks for the replies but I tried vignette when it went on sale and was very disappointed. For normal shooting I guess it's ok but I do a lot of macro shots and it's nearly impossible to focus up close.

Is there a way to install the sense camera app on AOSP/CM9? I would assume not, since it probably needs a bunch of HTC/sense libraries, but I suppose there's a chance everything non-AOSP that the camera app needs is bundled inside the APK.

Did you try a long press instead of just a tap? Also make sure you choose Macro in Frame-average -> Focus distance. https://www.dropbox.com/s/hr2tth7xbbxmm7q/2012-09-04 14.12.27.JPG (that's a AAA battery so it's pretty small)

I did do the long press but I didn't see a macro setting, I may have to check that out. Also when I was doing the long press does it always take the picture immediately when you let go? That was kinda aggravating since It seems to take vignette a long time to process the picture and you're not sure if you even got it to focus correctly until after it's done. I may give vignette another shot since I did pay for it(even though it was $.99) but I'm doubting it will be up to my standards.

That was kinda aggravating since It seems to take vignette a long time to process the picture and you're not sure if you even got it to focus correctly until after it's done. I may give vignette another shot since I did pay for it(even though it was $.99) but I'm doubting it will be up to my standards.

ya, camera zoom FX may help in some of those things... but like others have said, I'm using sense so I have no reason to need anything else.
Edit:
was thinking about this and I remember that Camera zoom FX also had a super fast response. I'm currently on sense 4, which is blazing fast on shutter speed etc, but before that cz FX was easily in the running for speed... just giving more info.
Rock on.
Camera FV-5 is pretty fun to use. You can do long-exposures with it as well. They come out all funky most of the time, but they always look very cool. I can also vouch for Camera Zoom FX.
Sense camera is the thing that's keeping me from aosp right now. I like it too much!

Thanks for the replies but I tried vignette when it went on sale and was very disappointed. For normal shooting I guess it's ok but I do a lot of macro shots and it's nearly impossible to focus up close.

If you're a fan of macro shots, then might I suggest a $6 addition to the phone: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wide-Angle-...395?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4844d51083
Yes, you do need to affix the metal ring on the outside of the phone. But, it produces pretty amazing results:

Also if you're rooted I'd suggest upgrading the camera app. The stock app compresses images and it becomes blatantly obvious when showing an image at it's native resolution on a larger screen.
sense camera
i love the 2x video mode for sense camera. I do some coaching of gymnastics and olympic lifting so being able to record and playback in slow motion right away is fantastic.
Can anyone say what it would take to get the sense camera on AOSP/AOKP?
you should really check out UCam

Anyone else not satisfied with the camera?
I already took a great shot but most of them just feel soft and not sharp at all!
A lot of noise as well when zooming in.
I'm quite shocked as my OnePlus 3 takes better pictures (GCam).
The selfie cam is the worst. On OP3 I can basically see all of my skins pores, beard hair etc.
On the mate it's just soft(no matter the setting).
I'm on firmware 122 btw.
Would be good to know if that's just my taste or a wrong setting maybe?
Thanks!
In general:
Very satisified with the back camera.
But the selfiecam is kind of 'boring'.
You should provide pics to make your case as the question is so broad and the answers are so many.
Took a few pics today and really impressed with the back camera. The front camera isn't great and beautifies every image and looks soft. Hopefully a software update could fix this. Came from a pixel 2 which I think are the ones to beat at moment for camera phones.
Back camera is really great. In selfie camera there is an option to switch off beauty mode. Try with that option and you will get better selfies than Samsung Galaxy flagships.
I just posted to a similar thread over in news aand discussion.....
I too am disappointed with the M20 pro camera, mostly indoors in not so good (but hardly terrible) light the images are really quite soft
Looking at the exif it always seems to choose a really low shutter speed and as others have said no OIS on the main camera. Like I said disappointing, I am on .238, no idea if there are any camera improvements to come on .266 or 9.1?
Light can change your thoughts
Yes the mate 20p camera tends to take soft and sometimes blurry photos. I blame the lack of OIS.
With a little extra effort you can take awesome photos, but for point and shoot many other phones do that better.
I just moved from op3 to mate 20 pro, principally for the camera and... I'm disappointed, my ops3 photo's with gcam are a lot better! All photos in middle light (and hdr condition) look like they are painted!
I tried to make some side by died) side comparison and one plus 3 photos are better in everything

Me is not possibile, I was keeping one phone in a hand and the other one in the other, setting i don't know maybe.. M but I just opened the camera and chosen hdr..., have you some setting to suggest?
Some photos are good but others no..., color are a little bit more ok and grass looks painted
Now in no more at home, this weekend I'm coming to post some comparisons if needed

Are you using vivid mode? Try turning that to standard
I'm very satisfied with the camera, I think this is all about setting, not the camera or the phone.

I tried that setting but it doesn't look to influence the "painted effect"
This weekend on going to make a more detailed test and on case I'm going to post some photos

Turn off AI maybe. Honestly if you're trying to tell us one of the best rated phone cameras of all time gets bested by one of the most mediocre, you'd better have some valid evidence lol
My only gripe is the AI sometimes gets confused like when it thought this shot was winter and it changed the images completely

That is a totally feasible complaint as I have had this happen as well. Sometimes AI is better off for certain shots for sure
That's why it is handy on the latest 9.1 update to turn on and off without going into settings. You can also of course click the X when it detects what it think it is. I have had no issues with the camera in default mode and actually find it performs better after the last update, especially the transition when going to 3x zoom.
what bugs me is the "hold steady while camera sharpens the image".
Is there a way to avoid this?

Nope, The phone is taking a auto hdr(thats even more extreme than the HDR mode btw) photo, generally it doesnt matter if you move or take another photo while the camera tells you that, i just ignore it.
