[Q] SCH-I545 VRUAMDK rooting and custom recovery help - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

HI all I need some with the device in the title, more specific rooting and custom recovery. I own a GT-I9070 running cyanogenmod and the device(S4) is of a friend who asked me to help him cause he can`t acces internet on his phone, he`s from Romania as I am too. I would be very grateful if someone can point me in the right direction. I am familiar with flashing, custom recovery, odin but for this device I found something with safetrap and I couldn`t understand exactly what to do so please treat me as a total noob as I have no idea how to custom this device.
Thank you in advance,
Robert

If it's MDK, you're in luck - the bootloader is locked on all of the I545 models, but the bootloader lock can be bypassed with Loki on MDK.
You don't need to use Safestrap.
Go to the "Android Development" forum and read the thread "[GUIDE] Root for Verizon Galaxy S4 ***VRUAMDK Build Only" at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
Once you're rooted, browse that forum for ROMs. Since you can install custom recovery, there's a wide range available.

If I flash those kernels with Odin it won't wipe data with factory reset checked, cause there says no wipe data ?

You need to install a custom recovery either TWRP or CWM and then flash the kernel from the recovery

You don't flash kernels in Odin, Odin is for gaining root, installing recoveries, returning to stock and fixing soft bricks, once you have root and a custom recovery you can flash kernels. You misread the post.

First, wrong place. This is a development forum. Post in the Q & A section next time.
Second, what Version of android are you on now? What method did you use to get CWM?
its android 4.1.2 right now and i had flashed CWM through odin.

And what error do you get when you try to flash a custom ROM?
something like root missing and also sometimes rom not flashes fully and it comes out in recovery.
Did you wiped data and cache in recovery?

Newbie planning to root

Hi I'm new here. I'm planning to root my Samsung Galaxy S III. Is there something I need to check or take note before proceeding? Everything in my device is in stock.
And by the way, do I need to root my device in order to flash stock/custom roms? Is there any differences between flashing updated stock roms and updating via software update? TIA
You need to read the basic stickied faqs and guides first.
Like backup EFS.
Why root when you dont know what its for ..?

You do not need root to flash stock roms whereas for custom ones yes.
Read the stickies for how tos, etc.

do it with Samsung Toolkit - its simple and quick and you dont have to install Kies, drivers etc...

[Q][I9300][XXELLA]Best way to root?

Hello everyone,
I got my new S3 and would like to root it. I am looking for the easiest way to do so. Currently I would like to stay on stock firmware, but only rooted. There seems to be so many ways to root the I9300, so I am looking for suggestions from user who have rooted already.
My S3 info:
Model number: GT-I9300
Android version: 4.1.2
Baseband version:I9300XXELLA
Build number: JZO54K.I9300XXEMA2
This method seems the easiest: [GT-I930x/T/N][SHV-E210*][SHW-M440S] CF-Auto-Root
Thank you,
CF-Autoroot or CF-Root 6.5 depending if you want to have a custom recovery or not. Follow the guides and make sure to flash the correct file for your device!
PhilZ Or TWRP .

Although I would recommend changing the recovery that comes with the latter anyway as we can't guarantee it's SDS safe, which means may as well do CF_Autoroot.
Then as JJE says, flash Philz or TWRP
I used cf auto root then put cwm recovery on. XXEMC2 also have stock rom at the min

Philz is like CWM but with way more features.
TWRP is a completely different experience but equally as good. Both of these are safe from SDS (See sticky in general for Sudden Death)
CWM is nto SDS safe
Just read thay thread..and I do suffer feom random bouts of the phone restarting itself.but this is an issue I had on stock rom before root
Have noticed since root my clock widget forgets to update so I have to delete it and replace again on hoke screen
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
We're talking about recovery now not rom. If you stick with cwm, when you flash a rom - we cannot tell you you're safe from brick due to sds. Only twrp or philz we can say you're safe. We've advised you. Follow or ignore our advice, its your call but you have been warned.

Like I just said DO NOT use this method. Chainfire no longer supports it but worse than that, cwm it comes with does not prevent SDS. Do NOT use this method.

Thanks, i flashed the new cwm that should have SDS fix
So i guess it should be fine to use the cf root and then just update the recovery, right? i mean there's not a big chance of sds on first recovery use

That's exactly the same as using cf auto root. So why not just use that?
Or just flash recovery if you don't need root. You don't need root if you're flashing a custom rom.

I guess the best thing is to check the main features of latest stable roms (based on stock firmware if you want all samsung features) and then try the ones you like the most..
I wanted to try android 4.3 and eliminate all the samsung (mostly useless for me) stuff, so i checked some threads in the forum and now i'm trying the supernexus 3 rom, it's pretty good, with not many customizations, but very lightweight..

[Q] Chaos/Hell opened up... should I unroot?

I opened up the gates of hell. First installed international MJ9 ROMs. Then erased my internal after backing up EFS to the internal... derp.
Now I don't have IMEI info. it's NULL.
I am growing tired of reading non-Verizon-GNII topics not helping much to solve this issue.
And for some reason my phone is keep spamming "FACTORY MODE ON"
I wonder if I unroot my phone and upgrade it to OTA 4.4.2 it will fix everything.
Any ideas?
What should I do to go back to stock 4.3 or 4.4.2?
P.S: Got out of Factory Mode.
I would try to odin back to factory for what ever you had prior to this. Don't take the ota or you'll be stuck there. . And if you weren't already on 4.3 don't go it either. Totally different hell if you do, one with locked bootloader and no root access...

Ah nice thank you!
Is this actually unrooting my phone? I mean will this lock my bootloader and prevent me from installing custom roms in the future?
Thanks so much for your advise.
Yes it will. That's why u wanna flash whatever u had before. If you had 4.3, flash 4.3. If you had an older image flash it. The thread has everything you need. If you can do 4.1 then you can unlock the bootloader again. If you flash 4.3 you can root but not unlock. If you flash 4.4 you are bone stock no root possibly forever

Sweet... I just installed rooted stock 4.3 by beanstown106 and everything's back to normal.
All thanks to you vlx600d.
I know I asked you this once before but I just want to double check:
- I am able to flash 4.4.2 ROM from my 4.3 ROM without a problem?
- Can I flash 4.3 back from 4.4.2 ROMs?
Thanks so much!
For anyone with my kind of problem, try installing Official Rooted Stock 4.3 and flash the modem via Odin per the instruction in the link.
