Google play has been second on my battery use list for the last day or two. Keep awake for the last day and five hours. This is just out of nowhere, anyone else having this issue?
I battle with that app daily. Every month my data usage from Google Play Services is over a gig, even though I have no idea what it is doing. I have it disabled, but it turns itself on and I constantly have to "force stop" the app. I suspect it is tracking everything I do and using that data for marketing reasons.
I asked a similar question months ago and received no responses. I am out of ideas on how to prevent this thing from chugging away at data usage and the battery. I guess if you want to be Android then you accept that this thing is going to suck the life out of our phones.
For me it goes away for a while and then out of the blue decides to fire up and peg the throttle at full speed. Happens on my phone and tablet. Do not want!
Late but hopefully useful?
Researched this a lot, found some solutions, bad and good fixes and after trying some different twists on it after two days this is what I found to be the best, and I decided since this is just as bad as 4.0/4.1 and the mediaserver battery drain I might as well try and help at least 1 person by mass posting this reply I wrote else where to other threads, so here you go:
"Hey- I don't know if you, or anyone else has found a working solution, but here is the way I found best:
Note- I am on galaxy s4 [sgh-i337] running a 4.4 KitKat rom. I have found the following work around to work best for me:
1 Google now & Hotword detection=OFF,
2 GPS = OFF and turned on only when needed, eg maps/checkin on facebook/whatever needs location.
3 Settings-> Manage Apps -> Google Play Services -> Manage Space -> Clear All Data.
**Optional:After this [root only] I go into KT tweaker and make sure my phone cpu is set to a max of 810 Mhz when screen off.**
This fix usually works until I reset the phone. I ALWAYS follow those 3 steps when rebooting. AND always check that after I've used GPS that Google Play Services isn't keeping my phone awake. [Eg, after 30 minutes I check if the phone ever went to sleep again when the screen was off.] IF it does act up, I repeat steps 1, 2 &3. I still get notifications and all, and this is the least feature disabling way I've found that works with the cost of a little micro-management of your phone.
With this fix I can idle for an estimated 5-6days. As I take off my phone from charge at 8am and at noon with minimal usage [maybe 4 or 5 texts] I am at 97%. With WiFi on & connected.
OTHER: I personally keep NFC&Android beam&Bluetooth OFF, and turn ON when I need it on. Other- WiFi is always ON, and "Scanning Always Available" & "WiFi Optimization" is checked ON for me. And for location mode when I do have it on, I keep it at EDIT: Device only. Using only gps to find my location.
All in all, I hope this gets fixed."
I can post screen shots and all if somebody wants them or if there is need for one

This has been driving me nuts for weeks, so I figured I'd share the info.
Recent releases of Google Maps has been causing intermittent problems for lots of people recently, and seems to especially affect users of CyanogenMod 7. What I kept wondering was why several instances of Google Maps would show up in Advanced Task Manager. But what really confused me, was why my battery stats showed Google Maps drawing almost as much battery usage as my WiFi, which is basically on all day.
It's not exact, but with nothing else going on, WiFi seems to drain about 2% per hour. So basically Google Maps was doubling my non-screen related battery drain for no reason. The part that made this hard to track down is that it went away after a reboot, and only seemed to start lagging after the phone had been on for a few hours during the day, where it would start lagging like it was continuously starting and stopping a CPU-hungry process in the background.
Based on an offhand comment someone said in the GSB thread, I went into Menu -> Settings -> Location & security, and unchecked 'Use wireless networks'. I saw that the Google Maps battery drain was still going, so I rebooted. I mean... it's CM7, so you can put a satellite toggle in the notification area if you need location data. No need to keep it on all the time, right?
So far this reboot has been up for 40-hours, and I'm at 83% after being unplugged for 7 hours with mixed usage. Google Maps isn't even in my list of apps that have used battery power. I'm not going to declare this "problem solved!" but it might work out for you if you've been having similar problems.
I'm using gsb 3.6 and haven't had any of the problems with navigation that other people have had. I keep location turned off and set it like that whenever I install a new rom. You may be on to something.

I tried this a few days ago. I have seen an increase in battery performance. Thanks trifthen!
Thanks this helped a lot
Sorry if this has done the rounds, but im new to forumn and none of the posts seem to have all my symtpoms.
I bought a few weeks ago a tf201. everything is great, bar two points.
1) - battery life is emmense when docked on the keyboard and in use, and undocked. BUT when i leave it docked it just seems to refuse to go to sleep and manages to chew up just about all the battery overnight. from the battery monitor in settings the wifi and screen stay on overnight so it loose 5-10% or so an hour.. not great
2) not sure if this is related to the above, but again only happens when docked. if it does go to sleep (i think). when i come to wake it, nothing happens. in the end i have to press the power and volume buttons to reset it, then it wakes back up again. interestingly when its dones this it doesnt appear to have lost much battery charge.
So it seems that either it doesnt want to sleep, or if it sleeps, it sleeps a little too much.
im running the latest OTA ICS update as of last week and havent got that much installed widget wise etc. Ive been pouring over the forums for people with similar issues and the nearest i can find is people recomending using flight mode apps to keep the tablet from completely sleeping. this sort of works but the batteries then need charging every 2-3 days, which is better than daily but not great.
any pearls of wisdom as this for me is ruining an otherwise great device...

Email Accounts set to "push"
Email clients connecting to Exchange usually have a "push" option that continuously syncs with the mail server. Some of them (like Touch down which is what I use) allow you to set off work times when it won't be polling the server so I set it not to poll between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
Also, look at the accounts and sync area in the settings and see what other stuff is being synced. I had no idea until I looked just now how much stuff is getting synced under my gmail account. It's not just mail and calendars like I thought but also a long list of other things.
Then, looking under "Backup and Restore" in the settings, I'm seeing that it's doing a "backup app data, wifi passwords, and other data to google servers". I'm assuming that means all my mail etc. When I first set up the tablet a couple of days ago I noticed that all the wifi connections from my Droid 3 showed up so that was the first time I realized that my phone must be doing this too...
That's a security issue in that by my employer's rules, sensitive company data isn't supposed to be stored on other people's servers so my exchange data really should not be backed up to google. And it doesn't make any sense to do that anyway. If one of my devices dies and gets replaced, when I configure the account on the new device, all the data will sync from the mail server anyway.
The point being that I'm discovering that there is a huge amount of stuff being synced from my android devices that I didn't even realize. That could be bogging down the network (particularly if on a connection that's slow to begin with) and also causing battery drain.
I'm experimenting with turning a lot of stuff off that I don't figure I need - both for the phone and the tablet - to see what difference it makes.

The exchange DATA, meaning your actual mail does not get backed up explicitly anywhere with vanilla Asus/Google ICS Firmware. What it backs up is account settings, and the options you select. Backing up all your mail would be awesome (under the right circumstances, such as when you need that backed up, and some apps will do so, but generally for a fee.
OP, for battery concerns, make sure that in settings, Asus Customized setting that "Mobile Dock Battery Saving and "Disconnect network during sleep are both selected. The latter option stops most or all synching when sleeping.
It sounds like you are experiencing SOD (Sleep of Death) not quite as horrible as it sounds, but if you have to push power button and or/ Power + Volume for 8-10 seconds to get it bac, does it then vibrate and reboot, or just come back to the Homescreen imediately? If it's the first one, look up SOD. I have had only ONE event since .28 rolled, and before that perhaps a dozen on .21, and NONE before that so it's due to SOME recent changes to firmware, at least in my case. Interestingly, I was able to stop it on .21 by disabling the same option we have been discussing. The two battery savers in Asus customized, and WiFi, Advanced: "Keep WiFi on during sleep" (You have to hit the "three dot" menu and choose advanced from WiFi Settings.
Anyway keep us posted, and let me know if you have SOD, or just a deep sleep - if you REALLY want to know how often and how long your tablet spends in deep sleep get CPU Spy (no root require, I believe) and after several hours, it will let you know what the CPU has been doing, for what percent of that time. it is an AWESOME way to determine how much deep sleep you are experiencing with the device.

10% in one hour of using?? so 10 hours???
I guess you should be more than satisfied........:good:
possible win
Many thanks for the suggestions.
I think i was get the dreaded sleep of death as when it slept to 'wake' it i had to reboot it.
Ive run through all the suggestions here + a few suggestions from the forumns, setting wifi to never, adjusting the dock battery usage, checking my sync options. In sheer frustration i removed all widgets and removed a shed load of apps (both pre-installed and ones that i had installed) installed cpu spy and tested. interesting that it appears to be ok now. charged the dock and transformer up on firday night and its still got juice today, all be it that dock is nearly dead and the transformer has 80%+ thats with 2-3hrs use every day and obviously sleeping...
one thing i did note. when it was docked before and 'sleeping' in the transformer battery was low it would charge for long period when it was sleeping? it doesnt seem to do that now. if the transformer battery is low and i sleep it. the power \ charge light stays on for 10-15 mnutes then goes off.. so def looks like something was keepign it awake.
go to settings/asus customized settings and scroll down to battery saving and check the two power saving settings :good:
My Galaxy S3 Battery Life Sucks Please Help! 15% After Only 7 Hours.
I’ve been having this same problem sense I got my phone about 2 months ago but now I’m finally just tired of it! My phone is rooted, using the stock ROM.
What I do to help battery life:
- Every morning I hold the home button and kill multitasking and kill all running aps in the background then I open autokill which automatically kills running apps in the background that are not needed.
- I have power saving enabled
- Easy Battery Saver running
After 7 hours of use I’m already at 15% and through out the day I barley use my phone. Its like this just about everyday. I use my phone about an hour of the entire day of web surfing and Facebook usage etc. The rest of the day I’m only texting and maybe taking 3 or 4 phone calls that last 10 mins. How much battery could that possibly take? A flip phone can do that and last 3 days..
I used my iPhone 4S much more during the day then I do the galaxy S3 because the S3 has terrible battery life.
On my iPhone I would have about 22% after everyday of using it for 11 hours down time = sleep and 4 hours of usage = texting, , phone calls, web surfing, games etc.
I don’t play games or watch movies on my S3. Only texting, instagram, facebook, websurfing which is about an hour a day usage. Also a couple minutes of GPS usage on some days.
What can I do to fix this? I don’t want a bigger battery that will make my phone any thicker.
I have pictures below showing usage through out the day and usage under battery.
Please help!
Thanks!
You screen is using most of your battery. Check the brightness levels. Are they on max or close to it? Switch it to auto

Oh thats easy.
You're phone is always "Awake". It doesn't go into Deep sleep like everyone elses. If you take a look at the first picture you linked with the graph, it shows that the phone is always AWAKE.
For comparison, I have attached mine as a reference but something is DEFINITELY keeping your phone awake.

Can't really see anything that stands out per say...
If you see anything on that thread or any apps on your phone that you think could be keeping it awake, just uninstall them. I would suggest trying to remove them a few at a time just to narrow down which ones are keeping the phone awake.
Also, apparently this app helps a lot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy) and Better Battery stats should give you a better idea of which apps use the CPU while your phone is trying to sleep.
Oh and remove any task managers you have installed.. Those tend to be the worst offenders.
One last thing, found this on another forum:
- Don't use an automatic task killer--not even the one that comes with the phone. Reboot your phone and look at what's running. If anything that you've installed is running and there's no reason for it, then uninstall it and find an alternative that behaves. Ignore any stock apps that run on boot as I've found them to be more or less benign.
- Weather widgets, live wallpapers, news/social feeds, any app or service that you use that runs--do without it if you can. If you can’t do without it, lengthen it’s refresh time.
- Don't use antivirus
- Set your WIFI sleep policy to never. The default is "turn off when screen turns off". This will cause the wifi to reconnect every time you open the phone. From any Home Screen select Menu/Settings/Wireless & Networks/ and then use the Menu button to see some new options - select Advanced. Then select Wifi Sleep Policy and set it to Never. Home key to return to Home Screen.
- If you have access to wifi, leave it toggled on as it is more efficient than 3G. Wifi consumes less battery power than 3G.
- I leave GPS toggled on too by the way. Apps use it as needed. When I'm done with Maps or an app that uses it, I'm sure to return to the home screen so GPS can stop. Under wireless settings turn on "Google location services" so that an app is able to use network resources to get your location instead of GPS. I have "VZW location services" turned off--don't know why that option is even there. By the way, I increase the speed of voice output > text to speech > speech rate because I like the directions to get spit out faster. That saves a bit of battery. Turning off the display and just listening for directions help. Also, often I just get the directions and then exit back to the home screen: GPS uses so much battery I try to get it over with ASAP.
- Under Accounts, click on any account listed and turn off sync for any items that you're not interested in syncing. For example, Google Books if you don't use it. Don't use Backup Assistant--I prefer syncing my contacts with Google. You don't need both. Also go into your contacts > menu > display options > backup assistant > UNCHECK. Also do contacts > menu > more > settings > contact storage > and select your Google account and "remember this choice"
Are you on the 3G network a lot or weak signal areas? Is your phone hot around the bottom? If yes to both, most likely it's because of the system attempting to find a better signal. When I was swapping out my SIMs, in various countries, I only have 3G network and my battery fully drains in 7hrs at idle. The only way i can go a whole day is to place my phone into airplane mode or wifi only to conserve the battery.
my battery runs at-most 13 hrs........................

maybe you have to flash a new rom
If you want, you could try to flash a custom ROM. I had the same problem that you have, and I flashed Revolutionary S5, and now my phone lasts minimum two days with the same usage, maybe a bit more.
Too bad Tony Stark hasn't gotten involved

Titanium Backup will assist a little bit. When you do a backup of an apk it will tell you if the application is running. You can find all kinds of sneaky apps this way. Many of them were ones I didn't use and didn't really want. That will probably yield minimal results, though. Keeping a black background helps on my S3. Colors, widgets, and live backgrounds will drain the battery. Turn off the menu and back key lights. You know the buttons are there. Turn off all haptic feedback and key press sounds. Of course, try to lower the screen brightness. Leaving my data and sync on hasn't caused me any problems, but you will save some battery by turning them off when not in use. I also read a post about hidden menu options that ran even when they weren't meant to. That was an issue that destroyed battery life. Some ROMs also have settings for data connection type. You'll save power by telling your phone to not worry about gaining signals like 4g, 3g, etc. As other people have said, try out some ROMs that make battery life a big priority.
it CAN get better
if you want to have a good battery life, use custom rom and kernel (or a modified stock like omega rom), watch out for wakelocks + apply these settings:

Hey guys,
On my second samsung device and my fifth rom (including eclipse TW, eclipse AOSP, aokp, CM10, now hyperdrive). Have to say thay I'm satisfied with pretty much everything Hyperdrive has to offer, its freaking amazing! One issue doesn't seem to be resolving despite many attempts. My phone stays awake nearly 100% of the time with a wlan_wake wakelock. This isnt the well documented wlan_rx_wake wakelock, which I've also had in the past but managed to squash. I'll recount my findings in some order below.
I installed Hyperdrive, restored some some vital apps. Waited a couple days and found the battery wasn't what I'd hoped it'd be. I usually run with auto sync enabled for total 8 mins per hour (via Tasker) and wifi and mobile data on. I've also used a script that disables IPv6 whenever it connects to a wifi network -- work network has tons of IPv6 broadcasts that were triggering massive wlan_rx_wake wakelocks which were vastly reduced with this fix. Even with these throttles, I noticed that some time after boot (10-15 minutes) on my work as well as home network (10 mixed devices on a belkin router), a wlan_wake wakelock would start triggering and my phone would then stay awake 90-100% of the time, screen on or off.
I went ahead factory reset the phone, loaded just my google account, and found the same problem with autosync on, autosync off, GPS was off, Wifi "always allow scanning" option was disabled in the advanced menu, Google's Wifi network location was disabled, and no 3rd party apps except for BBS installed. Of course, with Wifi disabled, the issue abated but 3g/4g doesn't offer much better battery life than the phone staying awake the whole time. During this time, I used Network Logger and Shark for Root to attempt to identify Wifi traffic and found that a few apps were transmitting frequently, but not enough to keep the phone awake for the amount of time the wakelock indicated. Total battery drain is up to 8-10%/hour with absolutely minimal use. I've never had this particular issue with any other OS i've installed, any ideas what could be going on? Really looking forward to being able to rip through days without charging on Hyperdrive!
I have a Samsung Note 3 and I too have this same problem (except that a factory reset solves it). Can't seem to find a fix. People on internet suggest that it's because of some rogue app but my phone starts behaving like this randomly until I do a factory reset.
I get this daily notification to enable location services so it can update the network time even though I already have the system setting to update network time automatically.
It is coming from the phone as you can see and it still rings and vibrates even though i have them off.
I spent an hour on the phone with huawei today and they said it must be an app requesting the location which doesn't make sense to me as it says it is to update the network time (which I already have on).
I have never had a phone insist I turn on location services with a daily reminder before.
Just turn it on and leave it...it helps with many things that the phone does...maps, third party apps that find cell towers and WiFi hot spots, and of course what time zone you are in.
thanks, but I want to know how to stop the phone from asking me to turn it on every day, I don't want my gps on 24/7

Same here. On my mate 20 x. I googled this and found this thread.
Any luck?
I'm also experiencing this, I tried the same things as other posters here but still haven't found a way to stop this annoying daily notification. I'm on a Huawei P20 Pro.
Try turning off automatic time zone (whatever it's called in your settings)
Wrong.
I, too, am having this problem (also - as yet - without resolution) on Huawei.
I believe this problem (for me) is BECAUSE I have "automatic update" for Time/Clock turned off, and GPS turned off, BUT Google Services wants it/them turned on (by default). Indeed, I am lead to believe that you cannot remove Google Services from Android, while disabling Google Services is not effective. Love, Fred (not my real name).
