I switched from a Samsung rom to an Aosp rom a week or so ago, and while I'm loving most things about it, I really find the default Android camera lacking compared to the Samsung one. The Samsung camera has better focusing, much, much easier to navigate menus, takes better night shots, has stabilization, and seems to consistently take better pictures. Is there any way to get it to work on aosp? I remember there being a way to do it on the s3. If not, what camera apps do you guys use?

Unfortunately you will be unable to use the samsung camera app on aosp. I purchased camera zoom fx and use that. I also have heard people recommending snap hd camera but I haven't personally tried it. The picture quality doesn't seem to be as good on aosp as touchwiz. It's a trade off of running aosp but worth it imo.

i reccommend the motorola one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387369
i also like the Camera Zoom app. But the motox one is best.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll give your ideas a try. I've used HDR camera before with good results, but I'd like an all around good app. I think I'll try the moto one first. EDIT: I tried the moto one. I love the interface, but there are no settings for anything such as video or picture quality, or storage location.

I am using CM 7 with my G Tablet and like this the best overall of the available ROM's for use. My only issue is with the camera. I know it's not meant to be a replacement for a more standard camera (digital, or good phone camera like my Vibrant), but when I view the saved pictures it's pretty appalling. They look so bad that they could almost be .gif files rather than "Super Fine" setting jpg's. Is there a way to optimize the camera for better (or at least decent) pictures?
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.
Curious too. I'd like to get away from the stock cam/corder since it crashes if you take a image, take a video, then back to try and take another image.
Hey Guys!
I've tried my best searching the web and xda before making this thread but I really want some opinions here. I've been switching between MIUI and Simple&Clean. I've read stock TW Cam is better quality than MIUI and I felt that too when I was using MIUI.
Funny thing is though, the camera hardware remains the same doesn't it?
So my big question is, if I run MIUI (which supposedly has bad camera quality) and download a good camera app, say ZOOM FX, it should technically work as well as a stock rom's TW camera right? (since it's the same hardware)
Sorry if I'm confusing but I really find this problem weird!

MIUI still doesn't implement good drivers for correct video playback! hence, video stutters...normally 1080p video stutter...! and MIUI camera is also good!
You do mean the still Photo camera and not video right?
I see, but is it the same reason for camera photo quality? That the drivers aren't implemented properly too?
So if the drivers for the camera isn't as good, technically if I'm on MIUI Rom and install Camera Zoom Fx, the quality would still be bad right?

People, I also, go for 3rd party camera apps, they do work good!
Like lgcamera...but i don't really compare the miui camera with stock one! i suffer from placebos
Damn haha, you're exactly like me, I buy a third party app or get influenced by MIUI's camera and think it's not that bad.
Hopefully others can give a more accurate opinion
The one thing holding me back from flashing cm10 is the fact that I lose the TW camera. The HDR function in it works _so_ well.
I've tried a few free versions of various HDR apps and they all suck compared to the TW one.
Does anyone have experience with any of the ones on the market and can maybe share their settings?
HDR/MDR
I don't consider any mobile camera good. Any cheapest point-n-shoot will punch it in face. If u got SGS3 for camera - u r wrong.
I heard Photoshop can do HDR - so look into that. Also PlayMarket is a good source of information.
I disagree. The camera on this phone is more than adequate, and HDR is impressive

meh, camera is great for my neeeds.
as for ps doing hdr, you need an hdr image first for ps to be able to manipulate the exposure and b/w settings.
what is PlayMarket? Something that reviews playstore apps?

Do you have anything to back that up, or is it just your POV?
Check out vignette. I'm pretty sure it has an HDR function in it.

Any recent cheap point in shoot will do better in terms of IQ.
Having said that even cell phone cameras vary in quality and if you use them then you'd be silly not to take that into account if it is important to you, even if you've got another camera that is better.... nothing wrong with buying the S3 for the camera. Not sure how that would be "wrong".
the camera was like 70% of my interest in getting the S3. I have a nikon d7000 DSLR and know that the cell camera will never be able to get close to that beast but sometimes I don't want to lug around my dslr and having a cell that can take great pictures is a huge plus especially if you don't want to carry a point and shoot and a cell phone at the same time.

I had previously used PRO HDR on the OG EVO, and it worked great. The EVO 3D didn't support HDR apps at all. The GS3 has a great built-in HDR option, and tried PRO HDR again - the native one is better!
So for now I'm sticking with the stock camera (I'm rooted, but running stock until CM10 has a semi-stable build..).

Get Camera360! I love this camera, its free and so many effects and you can actually choose between a couple different HDR modes.
Kind of a nub question regarding aosp camera v. TW - when one refers to the TW camera as being superior to aosp, is that because of the features offered or pic quality/software? In other words, does the software make a difference when you have the same processor, same lens, etc.?

It's mostly the features, but yes there is software processing that happens when you take a pic. For example when the HTC One came out it had overexposure issue, and they pushed out a firmware update to correct this. So basically since the TW camera app was written specifically for Galaxy devices it'll use the camera in a better way than AOSP which is designed to work with pretty much any camera.
The TW camera app has proprietary stuff that only works with touchwiz. Samsung paid good money for it, and will never give it out.
So, basic if you want the most out of the camera, you'll get it from TW because it can fully optimize it.

Using it as well and I am happy with it
Try: Focus or Cyanogenmod camera app, they're pretty similar but I prefer CMcamera.
Open camera is the best by far.
i really like the stock camera. And bec of it i am coming back to stock rom from cm12.1, i really like cm12.1 Rom. i am sometime go for it but come back to stock rom because of camera. Will never happen. As source for this has never been released by Samsung. Has been this way for ALL custom ROMs since ever. The camera is the main reason I keep going back to stock. Focus is horrible on pretty much all custom ROMs. But because of major security flaws in stock OS I'll be switching back to CM.
Maybe auto focus is terrible but manual is damn good for macros. I used to make macros of smartphone motherboards, mostly after water damage to show clients that they phones wasn't stop working just by themselves. I can tell You on stock pictures from my phone was a lot worse than my coworker iPhone 5 and now they are a lot sharper and brighter than on his iPhone. I never tested outside photos on CM but I think it's only matter to feel manual focus.
Snap on CM11
Also using 12.1 on s4 mini, I've tried all cameras but have settled on Snap Camera HDR. Focuses fast and accurately, and doesn't lag. Also works well in lower light.
I just came back from CM 12.1 to CM11 in my S4 Mini Duos and switched to snap Camera HDR. Far better than built in CM11 camera app. The only thing I miss is the capturing with on/off button...
I use A Better Camera
Google Camera is pretty fast.
I've settled on A Better Camera (running on CM12.1) as I like layout etc., admittedly auto focus is not as good as CM app in some lighting conditions but a quick tap on the screen and it will focus perfectly.
Try the Ucamera application.
It is very good and it has many effects. It s available on play store
Google Camera is a pretty good choice.
It is not so simple. You can not have the same quality stock cam because any cam app is working with generic drivers in CMs or any other ROM CM based . For the same reason , the audio (mostly capture) also will never have the same quality.
It is a price to pay: Camera and audio quality worse.
Some apps can even do a good job, but difficult to achieve equal quality.
Until the other day I used CM13 and even liked, but needed quality to scan a document on an emergency. I had to restore Stock Backup. I lost the desire to again change the ROM and stayed in Stock. Unfortunately it is a reality.
Some apps can even do a good job, but difficult to achieve equal quality.
One consolation is to use some Xposed Modules and other tools that make Stock ROM ... Less outdated, I would say.
