[Q] Android miscalculates total application size internal storage - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I am new here..
This is really bugging me so I decided to join here. First of, I am using a Galaxy Note 8 16gb N5100. The problem is that whenever I go to Settings -> Storage, the device shows an insane miscalculation of the total Application Size in the Internal storage. As you can see in the pic attachement, it showed that it takes 60+GB of memory which is impossible since the usable internal storage of the tablet is only 9.87GB. I tried restarting the device but to no avail. In addition to that, the reported memory taken up by Applications increases (by 1 or 2 GB) whenever I restart and check the storage.
I tried removing my 64GB microsd card for the reason that it somehow mistakenly reads the sd card storage and display it the 'Internal Storage' section. Again to no avail. Also, most of my applications are stored in the Internal Storage. I don't want to do restore factory settings since I have invested a lot of documents, notes, and application data esp. On games (I have Dead Trigger 1 and 2, Plants vs Zombies 2, Iron Man 3 that are already on a higher level). As experts, what do you think is causing this problem? My software is updated using Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and after I updated it to the latest months ago, it works just fine. I just notice this problem yesterday.
I hope there is a solution to this.... Your help would mean a lot. Thanks mate!

[Q] Device memory only 1.97Gb?

Hi,
I actually picked the S2 over the Sensation because of the slightly higher specs and the fact that phone has 16gb internal memory. Being new to android (switch from iPhone) I really don't get what device memory is and why it's filling up so fast. I have barely installed 5 tiny apps and already 140Mb out of the 1.97Gb has already been used. I installed loads of apps on my iPhone and I intend to do that same on my new one so could someone please explain this concept of device memory and what exactly is stored in there. Also, if I run out of device memory, how do I free it up or increase the 1.97Gb limit?
2GB /data rest as internal sd card, system partition, cache, etc.
You can move apps to sd card if the data partition is full.

Relax, there's plenty of space. I've more than 80 apps installed, and they uses 664MB, so around 240 apps before memory is filled up... Remember that large games like Gameloft games installs their main data on the 12GB partition. And there is also a possibility to move most of the apps to that area as well, but it is unlikely that you need that.
The 140MB used on your phone probably includes some pre-installed apps.
Phew! That's big relief... Thanks so much. Just one last small doubt, I realized that only some apps are allow to be moved to the SD card while others like facebook have the this option greyed out. Why is this exactly?
some apps have the ability to be moved to sd card while others dont due to the way they are built..
can use device internal memory to store app data?
guys is it possible to use the device internal memory (1.9gb) to store app data in absence of internal and external SD card? my camera/apps don't run in absence of the SD card any way to get around this by using the the device internal memory? ( i have 1.5gb free after installation of all the necessarily apps)

[Q] Mysterious internal storage usage

Hello all,
I have a very peculiar and troublesome problem on my hands. One of my family members has a Galaxy S II (international) running CM10.1, and the internal storage for apps and such is running very low, but I can't figure out why. She has only a handful of apps on the device, and even the internal SD card is more than half empty. The device is giving a "Storage space is running out" notification. I tried reinstalling CM10, but I left the data partition intact, so maybe I have to wipe it out to fix it. I'd prefer not to do that if at all possible, as we're on vacation right now. Any ideas?
Thanks!
I have the exact same problem.
i have 12 gig's of internal storage. 1gig used (if i add up the used files). and 899mb free.... ??
it doesnt add up.
i installed CM10.1.3 and cant figure out where all the data is.
cleared all cash and removed unused apps. it gives me a couple more MB's but no gigs extra....
i have a feeling i didnt clear the phone well enough before installing CM10.1.3
how do i get the missing ghost files back. and remove them?

[Q] Can someone please help me ?

Hello guys,
I'm absolutely furios right now... just bought a new SD card and guess what? Insufficient storage available.... I read like 50 articles, tried many ''solutions'' and nothing helped... I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace 5830i. If anyone can help me I'm even willing to pay. Just want to play games
Firstly, you have to check if the sdcard is fake:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730285
You could buy a 64 GB card and have the same message. The message is about the internal storage, not the SD card storage. Most apps and app data do not automatically save to the SD card (for a variety of reasons). This is not an issue with the phone (other than the fact that it's a budget phone and all the downsides that entails), as it's only made to do so much. If you are rooted, there are some options, possibly, such as Links2SD, swapping the mounting points to switch the internal and external storages, or something like one of the CronMod solutions. If you aren't rooted or don't want to, then your options are severely limited to basically moving some of the apps to SD, if supported, but it's not a great solution as it does not move much of the data over and doesn't support all apps, meaning don't put keyboards, live wallpapers, home launchers, or widgets on the SD card.
Hi, i had the same problem with the same phone and as es0tericcha0s say root is the solution, then you can do what you want you will see. if you have question you can ask me.

[Q]Galaxy Ace S5830 Storage Space Issues CM10.2

Hello Everyone.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Ace (S5830) and until 2 days ago i was running a CM7 on it until it suddenly just stopped working and the phone hung in some kind of boot loop. That's when i decided to "upgrade" to a newer version of CM and searched for everything necessary.
I tried some CM11 alpha but since it's pretty unstable (at least the version i had was) i tried others until i settled for a stable 10.2 version (cm-10.2-20140309-UNOFFICIAL-cooper++). So far i am pretty happy since it actually is running very smoothly on my phone and i did not expect that at all. But then i ran into the same issue that basically everyone owning this phone runs into - it's very limited internal space.
Fact is i do need some google apps since i'm using gmail and synchronizing my contacts through it. Also i want to use Whatsapp, basically the only reason for me having a smartphone right now. I Installed the Dolphin Browser aswell since a decent browser is also something i'd like to use from time to time, but it seems to be full on external anyways so it should not count towards the internal storage.
Problem is now, all that is already too much for the phone's internal storage to handle since whatsapp has to stay on internal - at least that's my experience - and the google-play services that are needed aswell are placed on internal too without option of moving them.
I tried some things but basically all of them failed on one or another weird way..
- titanium backup - uninstalled system apps that i am not using (radio, browser, google play voice things, etc.) but after a reboot they were all back again. Even before rebooting, uninstalling them seemed not to open up space at all.
- Link2SD - tried linking whatsapp to my SD card, failed since whatsapp wasn't running very stable anymore. If anyone has a solution for this i'd love to hear it!
- App2SD - didn't even show any internal apps, and wasn't helping at all.
Also something i've tried, i have a message backup for whatsapp that's ~14mb but lies on my SD card. Problem seems to be that Whatsapp on recovering these messages put's them somewhere on the internal storage, at least it takes those ~14mb away from it after it recovered them. I tried to change the path whatsapp uses for internal storing of data with the app 'FolderMount' (like i found tutorials on the internet for exactly this issue) but wasn't even able to locate the internal stored data :/ Not because i just didn't find it, but because it seems not to exist...
I know i can't really increase the size of the internal storage but i think there has to be something i can do. I can't even update whatsapp since i am just living on the edge of the "low storage space" message with 20-15mb left.
What i am hoping now through this thread is to get some ideas or options how i could free up some space, move some apps around to SD maybe (utilize Link2SD correctly) or in the end basically have the things i need but some free storage on internal so that i can use my phone, maybe even install apps on SD (without them touching internal space) and have some room to update the important apps like whatsapp.

[Q] Do all Android phones have split memory between phone storage and system storage?

Are all Android phones set out like this, with split memory between phone storage and internal storage?
My Gionee Elife e7 (3gb/32gb) has 570mb free system storage and about 18gb free phone storage. Sometimes I cannot download an application or update one because it returns an error message stating that I have insufficient memory. Some apps can be moved over to the phone storage but most cannot, so I am running out of space to store applications yet have so much left on phone storage.
If I had known that this phone split its memory up like this I would not have bought it because there is just so less memory to store applications on, and the excessive phone storage seems useless to me because I do not store a lot of music, photos or videos onto my phone.
Also, what about iPhones? I have never owned an iPhone before so I wouldn't know, are their memory components set out like this as well?
