[Q] Need to clarify difference between Droid Razr & Droid Razr Maxx - Motorola Droid RAZR

I have just recently bought a Droid Razr maxx, and wanted to know what are the difference between Droid Razr Maxx & Droid Razr?
1. Can i use all roms of Razr on Razr Maxx?
2. I live in India and have the Verizon model, so are there any optimised baseband or radio drivers for India?
3. How do i backup my stock rom, i mean which recovery is best for this phone.
4. Lastly has there been any issue with dead phone or hard bricks with any roms or procedure ??

1. Yes u can!
2. Not sure, but I think u can only flash vzw basebands
3. If u r new, I recommend safestrap, read the tutorials
4. Never heard about a hard brick, was able to solve any wrong flash procedures I did.

Hey, thanx for quick reply...
I am not new to android, have used nexus one and gnex before this, but am new to razr hence wanted to get a quick know how...
Also can you recommend some good roms frm speed and stability perspective, to get me started...
If you can provide a short summary(one line review) of your favored Roms, would appreciate that a lot..

Hi!
Maybe its too late to give you an answer but I wish to give you my oppinion about your doubts:
First: Yes, you can use every single ROM from the XT910 into your RAZR MAXX. The only difference between both devices is the 3200 mph of the Maxx.
Second: As I know there a common radio version running for the XT910 and the same for the XT912.
Thirth: everybody says Safetrap is the easyier recovery but in my experience (and I'm not a super high level user) BMM is almost perfect. One recomendation: keep the stock ROM on the slot #1, that's your safehouse in case anything happens. Play with the other 5 slots.
Fourth: It's harder to brake your phone than keeping it alive. But in case that something happens, don't worry, this razr is almost inmortal.
Regards

Thanx for the reply, any knowledge and insight is appreciated...
I too found bmm better, espc as it allows to use webtop partition, But unfortunately aokp doesn't work on bmm, so which roms would you suggest, that are feature rich and stable... currently am on cm, but need more features like aokp...
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk

Just be sure to check your model number and flash the correct rom. Under "about phone" under settings, check the model number to determine if it's XT912 or XT910. XT910 = GSM = UMTS_Spyder. XT912 = CDMA = Spyder.

I have spyder, am sure about it...
Also tried flashing a umts rom, and it works properly for gsm network...
But aokp and bmm arent compatible for some reason..
Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk

Managed to flash aokp jb mr1 milestone 2 on bmm, but have a network issue, I am using it on India gsm network, when I move from one area to another, it loses signal and can't find signal again till restart. Have the same problem on 4.2 cm also.
Had no problem on 4.3.
Any idea what is causing these problem on android 4.2? Is it a ril or baseband issue?

Hey Pix3l Viru5,
I just started using this phone as well. Here's the thread with the videos I followed to root my device. It also has links to the software you'll need to do it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342567
Before rooting, I also installed the Motorola Tools as drivers for the phone. You can find those at http://www.mymotocast.com/
After rooting, you'll want to install SafeStrap. It's a different recovery that will allow you to safely flash ROMs. There's a basic tutorial here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847599
And the newest version of SafeStrap is linked to in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391900
I think this is the video I watched that showed how to install SafeStrap http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8KOcnHJjHM
The ROM you choose will depend on which version of the phone you have (GSM or CDMA, also referred to as XT910 and XT912 respectively). If you're in the US with Verizon Wireless or Cellcom, odds are that you're using a CDMA phone, otherwise it's probably GSM. If you're not sure, you should be able to find other resources that will help show you which phone you have. Just make sure that you install the proper ROM for your phone.
Enjoy the Razr MAXX! Also, feel free to use the search tool provided by xda. It's quite handy!
And if you manage to brick your device, you only have yourself to hold accountable. Be forewarned that rooting can invalidate your warranty.

Razr V (XT885) Custom recovery BMM

Hey guys I have a Razr V and I know there is basically no support for it on here but having a look around I managed to install Boot Menu Manager (BMM) recovery on it and it seams to be working fine.
Foolishly I tried to flash a CM10.1 ROM on it that is hardcoded to only work on Safestrap ROM slot 1. I can still access the recovery though and I was wondering if someone can point me to a ROM they may work with this phone (its stuck on ICS kernel and I'm not sure if there is a JB kernel I could flash)
This is good progress for us guys with this phone, I think its available in Canada, China and Australia. Anyway I'm trying to get a custo ROM on here and was wondering if some of you guys might be able to help me out.
Would I be able to flash a JB kernel for the XT910? The phones are very similar, but I don't want to try it if it will certainly brick my phone.
EDIT: at the moment my phone is boot looping on the CM10 screen so it is good news we may be close to getting a custom ROM on here, or maybe I'm just an idiot and have ruined my phone
Cheers
SUCCESS!!! I managed to boot into D-WIZ 3.01 ROM but I have no software buttons anyone Know a patch for this?

What were the problems with the rom you installed. Also to port roms you need a base like cm10 otherwise its pointless. Every custom rom not based on stock is cyanogen based. All roms like miui, pac, etc are all based on cyanogen. So if we can get a cyanogen mod built rom to boot on our phone we can then start modifying it get all the broken things to work once we have done that we can then create a devtree then compile our roms from source. Its a bit backwards but way quicker than starting from nothing.
The soft buttons was an easy fix but the other problems where the SD card wouldn't mount properly. (File manager and storage recognised it but the phone said it was damaged) and the camera force closed.

Hey, I too have a RAZR V, and I live in Canada. For MONTHS I've been waiting for JB, anything higher than 4.0.4, but Motorola is taking their sweet ass time with it.
I'm not very tech savvy, so I was wondering if you could post a tutorial, or a walkthrough of how you flashed CM10 onto your phone?
I can provide any information you might need, please let me know
I managed to get it to boot once but other attempts have been unsuccesfull. I sent RAZR V device info to whirleyes the developer of BMM and hopefully he can improve compatibility.
At the moment the only thing working properly is flashing zips. I've soft bricked my phone several times this week and I'm about to go on vacation for a month so i might try out again when I get back.
In guess the good thing about a locked boot loader is that it is almost impossible to fully brick
At the moment its trial and error sorry, I'm not sure how I got it to boot the first time and also camera and SD card didn't work.

CM10.1 compatibility
Hi everyone,
I was wondering it it's possible to install the Motorola RAZR/RAZR MAXX (GSM) CyanogenMod 10.1 on my Motorola RAZR V X885?
I checked that both devices have the same specs.
The version that I want to try to install is the RC5. I would post the link, but, "ALL new users prevented from posting outside links in their messages". hahaha
Do u think I will get some trouble with this?
Thanks!

I was thinking exactly about doing the same thing, but I'm concern about using a ICS kernel with a JB rom. We should first try to flash a JB kernel. But I'm a bit loss with SafeStrap. Has anyone been able to boot something else in Slot 2+ ? I've tried to copy my existing system over these slot and it doesn't work. But I guess it has something to do with the kExec thing.
You can't do so. Your bootloader only allows you to install the system with the same signature. It won't pass the signature check to boot unless you backup and wipe mmcblk1p16(cid)

I previously had the atrix2 but gave it to my dad. I'm planning on getting the droid razr maxx (from the us as the battery life is a lot better) and i would like to know if BMM and the other roms here are compatible with it like cm and sokp as well as jbx kernel and also if the droid razr maxx is gsm compatible.
XT 912 and XT 912m only differ in the battery, everything that works for the Droid Razr will work for Droid Razr Maxx.

Sorry for asking again but bmm and the roms will work for the xt912MXX too (because once i get it i cant return the phone) ?? Especially bmm because i love to mess around with multiple roms
Does it also support gsm (on stock and custom roms) ??? Because some say it doesn't but others say it does on ics and above.
Yes, everything works. The variants are not different regarding anything s/w related.
BMM, SS both works.

First tip: don't upgrade to JB via OTA, cause you still have bootloader unlocked;
The best rom's i've been using on my XT910 are:
Omni Rom;
cm11;
Paranoid Android;
AOSP;
AICP;
AOSB (link's expired, hope to find some more in soon);
MIUI (I've been using it, but due performances issues I'm on cm11 now);
I'm on cm11 by now cause it's the most updated so far, I'd also recomend to you Omni Rom due it's amazinha extra features as multiview Windows, recente apps list and some more others
already It is possible update to 4.4 in the razr maxx? how I can know if my device is updateable?

bloatware is preinstalled apps, that are unnecessary and can cause the device to run slow.
I don't have a link for the xt912 at the moment, but the xt894/droid 4 is basically the same.

Ok Thanks Let me Try
I believe its a Jelly Bean thing. My RAZR's (XT912) and also my RAZR HD (XT926 still on Jelly Bean) will occasionally bog down for no reason, usually when opening Maps for navigation purposes. I strongly recommend using safestrap and upgrading your RAZR by using one of the fantastic Kit Kat ROM's available.
I cant recommend the Lollipop ROM's because I have not tried one yet but have read many good things about them

Yeah I Have Remove Bloatware let me test my phone atleast 3 days then if my phone still lag then i m gonna install kit kat rom actually i afraid coz i never install rom thats why installation of rom will not effect my phone right ?
I have a XT912 still on 4.1.2 that I have de-bloated and it will help your phone but I still find that it will slow down significantly while multi-tasking from time to time.
If you do use safestrap to install a ROM, make sure you get the safestrap version specific to your phone (spyder for CDMA XT912 and umts spyder for GSM XT910)

there are over a dozen different devices that have their own safestrap version.
use the correct version for your device.

I am using both Mokee ROM 4.4.4 and Liquid Smooth 4.4.4. These are the finest ROM's for the Droid RAZR that I have used. I am not saying they are the best, I just prefer them to the others I have used

If I remember correctly, I had a problem with either 3.75 or 3.72 in regards to wifi tethering/hotspot. In other words, it would not allow me to tether/hotspot another device (PS Vita) to my Droid RAZR. For that reason, I started using 3.65 again.
I cant remember, but I'm pretty sure that I was not the only one with this issue

I bought my XT910 on Nov 2011 and for the past 1.5 years I've been using it only for HDMI (to watch old movies which I've downloaded in the past). I had a defective earpiece, I received the spare and came here looking for any tutorial (then went to youtube).. Saw this list, so decided to debloat it... App Quarantine app does the freezing for free (you need to enable advanced in settings)
never felt any significant lag, may be because I gave it less work... Rooted and running European Retail 4.1.2 on Asia retail XT910..
