My camera is rubbish with the stock ICS app. I can get slightly better quality with other app's. The best I've tried so far is ProCapture but it's still not up to much. And the poor image quality isn't helped at all by the dreadful over-processing that's going on behind the scenes.
If I go to engineering mode/camera, the quality seems better and also has settings for AF mode, raw capture mode, unprocessed and such. But these settings don't stick outside of engineering mode and I can't even find the pictures I've taken in engineering mode. So what's the point?
Does anyone know if it's possible to use these settings for anything useful? I can't find any relevant settings with getprop so I wouldn't no what to try in the build.prop.

Hey everyone. I was just wondering what was everyone's take on the settings for the camera. I'm still undecided on the Anti-Shake usage in camera mode. It seems that it has a tendency to add more grain/noise to the picture (you can even notice it by carefully looking on the screen when you enable and disable it). Does it really help reduce blurry photos (since the phone does have digital image stabilization)? Also, same thing for video mode using video stabilization. Is it really beneficial to have it enabled? Since if you take pictures while recording, I think the resolution of the photo alters. Just wanted to know what would be the best settings in overall day-to-day usage.
I was just coming in here to complain about the camera myself and see what others are saying for best settings. I cannot either seem to get mine to take pictures without being blurry - in any type of light or with the flash.
I noticed while using the camera that there are no controls for contrast, sharpness ..saturation etc. So I decided to download other camera apps and use those functions in them. The only problem is, those controls have no effect on the image. I can adjust them ...say...in Camera360 or lgcamera but nothing happens. I can tell they are not preset values in the apps because say for Contrast, in all apps the contrast shows a value of 5. It can be changed but nothing ever happens. Is there a way to unlock these settings in the kernel maybe? Has anyone messed with this? Im just so used to always having control over these functions on my HTC phones. It seem kind of silly to lock them out on an amazing phone like the GS4
Bumpity....
Nobody knows anything huh?
I don't know about the third party apps but I know different options are available when you set the camera to different modes. Like in the beauty face mode the you can change iso

ISO is normally available in Auto mode as well as Exposure adjustments. But even in the Auto mode, there are none of the adjustments mentioned at the top of this thread. The only thing im really looking to control is contrast.....otherwise I have to edit most of my photos. The images are really good but because of the ultra high contrast preset in the camera, the whites/highlights get easily blown out.
Ahh.. guess not
No biggie I guess. Im not complaining about this phone or camera. Just kinda wish it had access to those controls.
So I just tried some settings in Snap Camera. Brightness, Contrast and Saturation have NO effect on the image at all. And also the Scene modes do absolutely nothing either. Is this some kind of bug with the GS4's camera software? Ive never used a phone and not had half the stuff working in the camera that typically works on other phones.
Or HDR mode really. Both the hdr mode and the pro mode's raw files result in better quality images than the regular photos.
I know we can quickly start the camera app with 2x volume down, but it always starts in regular mode.
Does anyone here know of any way to change the default mode?
There is no way to do what you said, maybe some tools with root... (I do not know anyone but they could exist)
I think like many, I've disabled all the beautification effects and lightning effects in portrait mode.
Wondering in that case if anyone is aware of a difference between both modes? I've kept using portrait but actually wondering if I should use aperture instead since it allows to change the point of focus and aperture strength effect afterwards which would be beneficial when portrait mode fails to blur some stuff or blurs too much stuff.
Just wondering what others have tried, thoughts, etc.
Aperture is more like a real DSLR. Portrait mode will try and keep faces in focus whilst also having bokeh.
Personally I prefer aperture mode. This allows you to edit after the fact and is better quality.
Maybe you can select different bokeh-types in portrait mode.
I don't get the soft effect.. tried the suggested on other thread.. disable all beauty effects and choose the darkest skin tone finally choose the the shapes (the star icon) of the lights on the background
Hi,
Since HDR in camera app is producing more or less watercolor like paintings (and don't get me started with the "funny" AI option) is there a way to permanently disable it? It's really annoying to manually disable it every time I start camera app. I usually forget to turn it off anyway and end up with unusable images. And yes, I'm using gcam too but this one has it's own set of problems.
Really, how hard is it to make a normal camera app? Camera hardware is clearly capable of good results but software is so bad it's frustrating.
I agree, the HDR implementation is a mess ! And it's very frustrating because without HDR enabled the app delivers pretty amazing pictures .
As a workaround for now I only use the camera in the expert mode (with all the settings in auto) because in this mode the HDR is never enabled and the picture quality is the same as the standard mode.
