There is no magic in format, it's not different from writing the system.ext4 image to the partition.
With that said, it depends what recovery you are using and if it had been tested to format the right partitions, becase if for example it formats the TA partition instead of system u may be in trouble.
In any case don't install anything if you don't know what you are doing and certainly not before you have everything backed up and ready for recovery.

Do a recovery before flashing, it can be useful later.
If you brick your phone, try to flash stock or other ROM.
Of course if you want a clean install you have to format but you need the .zip to flash the ROM, don't make the same mistake as I did.

Format the sdcard with the .zip in it, cannot boot, PC doesn't recognized the phone so I used other phone to get the .zip in the SDCard to flash eXperience and reflash CM11 again.
I got panic that day, but I've learned something, backup EVERYTIME before flashing. It's like an "anti-bricker".
And yes, I can enter to CWM, no problems.
Just back-up, follow the instructions and you're be fine.

Hi.
I don't have Xperia Sola, but if you have access to your CWM it's a good ting if you before flash anything you made a backup of your phone using CWM.
Maybe you haven't made any backup of your phone, than you can try to download some custom rom's from this forum for Xperia Sola, if not you can try to find a stock rom for your phone. I'm sure it has been posted lot of Xperia Sola stock rom here, and you flash it by using flashtool.
Maybe you will found something here:

[TUTORIAL] How to install Xperia Ultimate HD 3.0.2 for UNlocked bootloader

Hello people
First i wanna apologize for my bad English, but i know you will try understand me
After some hours of bootloop on my Neo MT15i i finally makes it to work This is my way to install Xperia Ultimate HD 3.0.2:
First you will need those files Flashtool 0.9.10.1... last one
Those files too from my dropbox, screenshot for flashing options, nearly stock kernel and MT11i_4.1.B.0.587_Customized_NCB_Nordic.ftf (yes i know is for MT11i, and i'm with MT15i).
1. Flash boot_ICS_plus_v5.img KERNEL
2. Flash MT11i_4.1.B.0.587_Customized_NCB_Nordic.ftf as i show it in screenshot and you will have increased /System and /Data partitions (thanks to MaxWorks with his thread
3. Boot to CWM and Wipe Data/Factory Reset
4. Mount and Storage, then Format /System
5. Advanced then Wipe Battery Stats
6. Install zip Xperia Ultimate HD 3.0.2.zip
7. Choose your options on AROMA
8. It's WORKS now
Shame on me, but is my first post and i can't post it at Xperia Ultimate HD Developer section thread
Good Luck
You could've posted in Ultimate HD q and A thread!
And this is pretty much known that
NEO users have to do this for any Rom normally so it was not quite required!
My point is :why create a thread for this?
You're trying to help I get it,but still!

Ok people i got it. If it useless let moderator delete it or stop comment it to go bottom and fade to archives. But let me tell you something: increasing /system and /data is not important for all ROMs. UHD 2 doesn't require it and when i have tried to update it with 3.0.2 my phone was bootlooped. At Dev section every 5th post was about the same, and some people aways says "Its working for me, which kernel you are using?", not so helpful right? When i tried to find firmware that i need to fix my phone, all the links was dead. Finally i have do my post, share working link and you people critic me. I'm newbie, most of people at this forum too and really want to help them.
BR
I respect your intention buddy...i think u should change the title...let this tutorial be universal...i.e...for all roms...and modify the instructions in a way to help install all roms.

I'm sorry if I post in the wrong topic, but I can't seem to install xperia ultimate hd (3.0.2 ) on my NEO and I can't post in the developer section.
I have a Xperia NEO with a LOCKED bootloader.
I have tried two times, and I get the bootloop after the SONY logo, also the leds of the buttons get switched on and I have to reflash the original firmare using flashtool.
The steps I use:
-Flash MT15i_4.1.B.0.587_Global.ftf with flashtool
-Flash MT15I_4.1.A.0.562_Kernel
-Root using DooMLoRD_v1_Xperia-2011-ICS-ROOT-emu-busybox-su
-Flash MT15i_4.1.B.0.587_kernel
-Install CWM (install-cwm1.cmd)
-Boot to CWM
-Wipe Data/Factory Reset
-Mounts and Storage --> Format /System
-Advanced > Wipe Battery Stats
-Install zip from SD card
-Follow instructions from AROMA (always careful to chose NEO as phone model and Locked Booloader)
-Tick the "reboot" option from aroma
-BOOTLOOP
Some people say that I should not tick the reboot box and reboot from cwm (but, from what I've seen, it exists Aroma installer and reboots from CWM).
Plase tell me what I do wrong, I hate to do this again and still get the booloop I mean, if it's 100% the reboot box from aroma, I will try it.. but if I do this and another bootloop then I will get very frustrated because its time consuming to reflash, reroot etc.
Thank you!

I've wiped all my system, data, cache, and all using CWM. Now the device detected, but there's a new problem. It says the phone is not rooted. What? I'm VERY sure I rooted my phone. Even before installing CWM I made sure my phone is rooted.
What can I do now, My phone is stuck at Sony Ericson logo. I even cannot enter the CWM. Please....... TT:crying:

Thanks a lot, man. :good:
I've downloaded stock rom. But still cannot flash kernel, it says I haven't root the device. Even though I've rooted it and I'm sure.
Anyway, thanks again!

Sir, when flashtool says the device is not rooted it means bootloader isn't unlocked... for now flash stock ftf using flashmode in flashtool and then make sure the bootloader is unlocked then only install jb with PROPER INSTRUCTIONS Best of luck
Cheers,
AJ
Thank you all! I finally succeeded installing super jelly bean 6.0 after unlocking phone officially! Thanks!

[Q] backup current kernel on Neo V

Dear all,
I would like to backup the kernel currently installed on this Neo V. I don't see such an option in Flashtool, therefore I'm asking for you help!
The scenario is quite simple: I'm running a stock ICS with root and custom kernel, and I would like to backup everything (kernel + clockworkmod backup), install "Super Jelly Bean rom", and -just in case- be able to roll back to the current system.
Thanks in advance!

U cant backup and restore a kernel..
its not ROM to do like that..
the only way to change kernel is through flashtool and some kernel flashers via computer..

Is it possible to export it like a .img file? Like any custom kernel you can flash..

There is no use even if u export it to .img.. Because it will the same kernel that you have flashed..
seee.. u cant flash a kernel through Neo V.. it needs a pc/laptop to do that..
but in many of samsung galaxy series phones u can flash kernel.through phone and no need of pc for that.. but that privilege is not there for our xperia devices..
hope you got it now.

Thanks.
Anyway, I don't have any problem in using a PC to backup the kernel. And use it to restore it, too.

While you use a ROM no changes are made in kernel. All changes you do is in your system. So no need to backup a kernel as it will be the same. As much as you recovery is concerned, it is included in the ramdisk of a kernel so re flashing the kernel will have recovery. But just in case you did some changes to kernel, just unpack the ramdisk and edit it accordingly, repack and done! You'll have the required kernel. Flash it anytime you want
Cheers,
AJ
