[Q] Updating RUU questions - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

For the past two-three weeks, possibly longer, I noticed that I no longer have mobile data unless reboot my phone while not connected to Wi-Fi. It seems the phones doesn't want to find data after leaving Wi-Fi ranges. I've tried different ROMs and tried out new Kernels -- Nothing seems to correct this. I'm wanting to to try and update my RUU since I saw that someone was able to correct this issue by doing it.
I'm running HBoot 1.9 and 3.16
I've read up on Rum Rummer and ViperRUU -- and still unsure which I should use and really, how to. I'm just wanting to update the phone and radios and then re-flash a ROM to see if the issue resolved.
Any help will be greatful. If there's a how-to listed anywhere, sorry. but if you could lmgty, it would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't mention anything about what firmware version you're on, what ROM (or ROM's) you've tried. This could be very useful in helping track down your issue.
Typically, RUU isn't necessary unless you booger up a partition, or want to get your phone back to a relatively stock state. It stands for ROM Upgrade Utility or Repair Upgrade Utility.
Rumrunner is for gaining S-off with the newest OTA update. Not the same as VipeRUU.

Still need to know your firmware version. Go to Menu>Settings>About Phone>Software Info>More and list your baseband (firmware) version. As far as data issues, some AOSP ROM's are known for them (mostly older builds). The newer AOSP ROM's seem to have the issue more or less fixed. Do you have data issues with Sense ROM's or AOSP ROM's, or both?

Baseband version is 1.12.11.0809
I just flashed Viper to test with Sense based ROM, but still the same. If I walk out the house/work, it won't regain mobile data until I reboot or reconnect to wi-fi.
You have a rom suggestion I should try? I'll give a shot.

Could be an issue with the Sprint connections optimizer (which I don't use). You're a couple of firmware versions behind, also. If you're not S-off, I recommend you do so and update your firmware to the latest version. You can use Facepalm to get S-off in less than five minutes time. Are you by chance using a custom kernel with Viper? I've run Viper before and never encountered data issues. Do you only have data issues in and around your house, or do you have data issues in general?

Yeah, I'm S-Off currently. I'll have look into updating firmware, searching now. As far as the data issue. It's everywhere. The only fix I've noticed is either turn off wi-fi completely or reboot after I've lost wi-fi signal. For example, right now I'm connected to my home wi-fi, if I leave the house, it won't use cell data unless I reboot. But also, if I disable wireless and reboot while in my house, I'll get cell data. It seems it never kicks off to cell data when wi-fi lost.

Strange
I'd definitely look into updating your firmware. If the issue persists afterwards, you may need to use VipeRUU to go back completely stock, and if the issue is still there, you most likely have a hardware problem and need to get your device replaced.

Just wanted to update in case someone else runs into this issue.
I updated the lastest firmware with the link in the previous post and flashed to Sense 5 ROM. It's now working as it should. Been running for a few days now. I haven't tried another non-sense rom yet.
I really appreciate all the help.

Thunderbolt and 4G on custom ROMs

I've seen this question pop up here and there but all solid answers are dated back to Spring 2011 and Verizon has updated their software at least once since then so I don't know if those answers still apply.
Last night I rooted my TB and went through a bunch of custom ROMs to see what the fuzz is all about. Of course some worked, some - not so much, but my main issue remained the same throughout whole process. The phone/data signal was always an issue. In some cases I've got solid 5 (6) bars, in some cases - phone app crashed with Force Close message and I got none. IN any case - I NEVER got the 4G connection until I rolled back to stock ROM.
Questions: since I was trying Gingerbread ROMs but haven't touched my stock radio - could that be a problem? Is it mandatory to use GB radios with GB ROMs? Will I be able to roll back the radio (I know I can roll back the ROM now that I did it) if something doesn't work out?
Would appreciate your answers for newbie Thanks!
Yes you must use GB radios on the GB roms or your will not get data

Alright, I have just updated to GB OTA - both radio and ROM. According to this thread it should resolve my issues with other GB ROMS, I will try again tonight and see how that works.

OTA Battery Melting Issues

Edit 3: Well more news. I have found that it's a problem with OTA and the new base with ICS builds. Seems like the cpu settings aren't wanting to stick at all. It's min/max is set at 100%. Disabling Perflock with Antutu and Setcpu seem to not be working as well. I saw on a different forum that someone else was having this same problem and was suggested to flash BAMF's new sense boot img. This unfortunately did nothing. Am and two other people only having this issue? If so, man i'm unlucky
So I ran the OTA from Con247's thread here And now I am having crazy issues:
Code:
1) Battery is overheating like crazy. Staying at 114F consistently
2) Had the "Dead Battery + CWM" issue like seen [URL="forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1489687"]here[/URL]
Now I have resolved the second issue, pain in the ass but solved. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for the first problem? Or if running an older RUU I'm thinking RUU_Vigor_VERIZON_WWE_1.02.605.6_Radio_RS_0.95.00.1013r_3161E_9K_NV_8k_1.12_9k_1.83_V_APT_release_221502_signed.exe
Any issues with going back? Is it even possible? This is a good arguement for having S-off so I can flash whatever I want. Thanks for the help!
Edit1: After further testing I have found that I can run GB with the battery hovering around 88F-92F while doing nothing and about 94F-96F while syncing. (Just flashed CleanROM GBE 1.7.5 for testing) Stock (from RUU) is running cool at 82F-86F
Edit2: Can anyone also give me some insight to normal battery temperatures? OC, stock, Heavy Use w/4g, Heavy Use Wifi, Screenoff... ect.)
My experience was similar. I think something in the OTA kernel is eating battery and causing heat. When I used that same process it didn't work quite right for me. I ended up RUUing to the latest official build and that helped some. Con's process does update your boot loader though and the old RUU will see that and fail. Your mainver should be updated too... So that can cause problems going back too.
I went to an ICS from and that helped my overheat issue some. I recommend the RUU and checking out one of those . You should see some improvement.

So run the acutal RUU? The latest or an older version?
If you took the OTA, you have to run the latest RUU. 2.01.xxx.xx.
So it seems that running the older RUU wouldn't work because it detects your version and will tell you that you have a newer version.
There's a new tool from drellisdee that will change your mainver using a script.
HERE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526316
So... I think you can use that and put yourself back to 1.x and run the 1.x RUU. You might want to check in that thread though. Also, I don't know for sure that it will revert your hboot and radios and such by running the older RUU or not. Worth a try though.
I also think I've read something about being able to revert the radios back to the original ones, not sure where that was though, and may have just been a post of someone else who thought it was possible.
Yeah good idea, I was thinking that too. I unfortunately cannot find an older RUU that isn't uploaded to FileFactory. Man that place is the worst. So what if every other uploader has shutdown in fear of persecution. And because of that they're severely overloaded. I need my RUU's dammit.
Can anyone also give me some insight to normal battery temperatures? OC, stock, Heavy Use w/4g, Heavy Use Wifi, Screenoff... ect.)
I mis spoke above... When I used Con's manual method it updated my HBOOT (not bootloader) which caused the 1. RUU to fail (I was using an older method to rewrite my mainver to 1.000.00.000, or whatever).
I used the newest official RUU which I found on football's sticky'd post in the dev section. If that's missing now let me know and I can hook you up the flash able RUU file.
As for norms, there a a few threads on the topic, but I usually max out at like 125 when playing games or surfing on 3G 4G. That's too hot IMO, but I saw 140 once playing GTA when I was in the same place you are now.

Don't know what to tell you. You can't run the older RUU even if you set your main version back. It will see the newer hboot and fail.
I did not change anything from the OTA update package. I just added root and turned it into a flashable rom. Any problems that you have are likely due the new radios or the new OTA rom itself. Alot of people have had back luck with the OTA rom and new radios/firmware. That is HTC's fault. All I did was simplify the install for rooted users.

OP updated with more findings. Also I re-read some of what I posted. I wasn't trying to place any blame on any one. Especially con247. You've, from what I've been seeing, have been a huge help around the community and I meant no disrespect.
Also-- coming from the 3D forums have really made me post apologies just to make sure nothing is taken the wrong way. I don't want to piss anyone off and have them not participate anymore. Effin haters are driving devs from our forums..
i am having the same problem with new new radios and firmware. nothing i have tried has given me the good battery life and low temps i had before the new radios. i really want s-off or someway of flashing the old radios. i was even wondering if ou could add the radio from the old ota to the new leak ruu and trick it into flashing the old radios but i doubt that would work.
Try using Scotts super wipe tool and re flashing the ROM. That's what helped me, I think my manual wipes kept missing things and freaking my phone out. Also reinstall everything from the market, my experience with restoring backup apps on a new rom has caused problems. Anyway these are all just suggestions that have helped me! Good luck!
Edit: since doing the above steps my Rezound hardly ever goes above 100 unless I'm tethering on 4g. And my battery life is good enough to get me through the day on the stock battery

Releasing more ROMs? Are you referring to sense 5 ROMs based on the latest stock OTA? If not, there are plenty of great ROMs out there for the DNA. I've personally used ViperDNA (2.0.3), CM10.2, SlimBean 4.3.1, crDroid 4.3. They have all worked great, and there are plenty more to try. Thinking about making the jump to one of the 4.4 AOSP based ROMs (quite a few out now).

I am referring to the new ROMs (and ROMs, such as ViperDNA) that work with the new 3.06 firmware and are updated to work with it. I have seen several out there, but as for working with the new firmware, when I posted, there were few that were updated to work with it. I am not saying any of them are bad, or do not work, I am just looking for them to update and run on the new firmware, that is all.
I do not want to get something to try and run but not work because of firmware issues. For this reason, that is why I am running DNA Super Stock Sense5 released for the 3.06 firmware. I like it because it is unbloated stock with a few minor tweaks that really are nice (what is specifically coming to mind is the battery percentage on the notification bar, inlaid in the battery level).

10-4. I'm still new at this, so I was unaware that the new firmware would cause any issues with flashing a completely different ROM.

Your firmware shouldn't matter, the ROM you flash is your firmware. It includes the kernel, system, and apps. Radios are not flashed when you flash a rom, but all the radios work with all the ROMs.
I have never upgraded past the 1.15 firmware and I've been running a variety of ROMs. The only things I've changed are the radio and recovery (so I can flash 4.4 ROMs). No problems aside from the known bugs since I clean flash everything (system, cache, dalvik, and data).

Thanks for clearing that up! This was my understanding as well, so I was a bit confused when with the mention of the lack of ROMs compatible with the latest OTA. I hadn't heard of issues running any ROM after accepting the latest OTA and getting s-off through rumrunner.

[Q] Random reboots, forgets wi-fi passwords

So I'm on my 3rd M8. They all from day one (literally as I walked out of the AT&T store) would reboot randomly, usually in the afternoon, all stock running the latest OS. On my 3rd I've installed Cyanogenmod and have been running the M builds (currently on M11), but now besides still freezing and randomly rebooting my wi-fi passwords get forgotten at random.
I have no answer for why this is happening, all i can think of is that its bugs in the radio version. Since I'm on my 3rd phone I can't imagine it's hardware and I'm not alone on this...
Has any other device that connects to your router also dropping signal and passwords too,or just your device. The latest AT&T radio is 1.19. I'm pretty confident boot loader will tell you that..Try other ROMs,maybe its a bug with the latest milestone release
Ill try the new radio. Last i checked it was 1.16. Since it happens in both cyanogenmod (and just today) as well as stock...im pointing at the radio too.
Seems to not reboot/crash when Wi-Fi is off.

Did you try to update the entire firmware package, or just the radio? Just thinking of this, since WiFi is one of the updated firmware modules. It still doesn't explain why we haven't seen this issue impact others. But worth a try anyway.

I updated the radio to 1.19 hoping it would help. However it was still doing it. It's really strange that I would have this issue on 3 of the phones. Not sure about FIRMWARE package...?

Firmware package includes hboot, radio, WiFi, Bluetooth and other modules like media; as well as kernel and recovery. It get updated separately from the ROM, and also requires S-off to flash manually.
Wonders_Never_Cease has all the recent AT&T firmware packages and instructions to flash posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/development/att-4-4-3-2-22-1540-3-debloated-sense-6-t2837365
Again, it doesn't explain why you have this issue on the stock ROM or an AOSP ROM. But its worth trying, for lack of any better ideas.
What am I looking for? Since I'm running Cyanogenmod 11, am I installing
Download:
2.22.1540.4 firmware only unmodified

2.23.502.3 is the latest firmware released for AT&T. So I'd try that.

No!!! Instructions on flashing the firmware are given on the webpage I linked. You flash with fastboot, and s-off is required.

Actually, you will want this one: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23681161096069444
It includes WNC's debloated stock ROM. So the download is huge. But it has the whole firmware package.
The file you linked is hboot only.

Hboot number and radio number.
Hboot 3.16 indicates original (1.54/1.58) firmware. I believe the corresponding radio is 1.14xxx.

Nope. You can just flash the firmware by itself.
I only get rebos still with wi-fi on. I didn't try flashing one of those ROMs above...was slightly confused. However I did install the GPE 4.4.4 RUU. Hoping that radio/software combo will solve my woes.
I've flashed the GPE 4.4.4 RUU here, and changed the CID to GOOGL001.
No random reboots after 2 days! wi-fi seemed the be the big issue and it seems to be solved!
I hope this helps others who have had the same random reboots, seemingly caused by wi-fi problems.
Info:
GPE RUU 4.4.4 from above thread.
Kept my phone unlocked. and with S-off. (SU installed)

[Q] can you un-install ruu?

i installed it on mt htc evo 4g lte to get the the lastest sense roms, but all of the one i have tried have issues, particulary cm11. so what i really want is the v4a or acid audio engine and i can find them without the new partition. can i uninstall ruu and go back? im s-off got ct twrp 2.8 and hboot 10...
You're S-off so you can run a older RUU and downgrade to the old layout.

No separate flash required. If you have issues, I probably still wouldn't run the ruu. V4A should work on any AOSP ROM on npl or opl.
turn on wifi and lose moble internet
i can seem to find a fix for this issue either. every cm11 rom i load this happens. do you have any suggestions? i read a long thread from mower and it was supposed to be fix a couple month ago.... grrrrr..
