Here's hoping someone knows, cos getting no response from the devs...
Root Explorer can apparently view network folders... Can anyone tell me how? When I connect via VPN I can't see anyway to navigate past root, nor can I see any menu item to enter a pc name / IP address. Stuck.
If no one knows, then recommendations for file explorers that do would be welcome.
Cheers all
Edit: Manual...

I saw someone do it on youtube with ES file explorer. But I'm sure that you need the IP address of the network each time. So I don't think thats the solution you are looking for.
What about this?

Looks like it works out of the box... not sure as they are just screen shots.
I recommend Solid Explorer. Best file explorer out there.

X-plore File Manager is the best imho. Can do ftp and smb network share, even root access. Best of all it's free.

So can Solid Explorer It does FTP, SFTP, SMB/CIFT/WebDav and other cloud services like Dropbox, Box etc. In yo face!
But Solid Explorer is a paid app though, but you get a 14 day trial. It's totally worth the few bucks though.

Many thanks all, I will have a play around. Liking the look of solid.
Edit: just been playing with solid, impressive, even has ftpexplorer. Thanks all for your help. Bye bye root Explorer, it's been emotional.

Ah, good old Speed Software did reply... they sent me a user manual for Root Explorer which I thought may be useful for some people...

Doesn't help though, can't see anyway to connect to network.
Tried and tested "File manager" by Rhythm Software for years now.. It gets the job done in browsing network folders.. (not windows share folders though)
It can also share your device over the network and other droids or PCs can access it.. Has password protection too to prevent unauthorized access over the network..
Press the pluss sign for a new tab, select "Network (SMB) Tab"
Now press "scan" and select the network of your choice.
Was googling for this, found the answer AND what seemed to be a really old unanswered thread on XDA

I downloaded ES File Explorer and it works great. However when Im away from my Wifi I would still like to connect to my home network using 4g if need be. I do not want to use Dropbox, All share but would like to somehow use ES File Explorer with the FTP option. Are there any recommendations you guys have or any apps?
Try smart ftp I'm sure it's still free or better yet what version of windows are you running u could just enable iis

That's what vpn is for.
Many routers support Vpn Server capabilities out of the box. And even if yours does not, there is a high chance DD-Wrt can run on it.
Alternativerly you'd need to keep your computer running with a vpn-server on it.

3or4 clicks on windows 7 u have a fully functional ftp server I have dd-wrt on my router but you would still need the pc on to access your files do it all on one box

Also is there a app you can get to control your PS3 from your phone using bluetooth?
Hey guys, I wrote an article over on our site that shows a quick walkthrough on how to display full desktop websites permanently on Chrome for Android Mobile so that you don't have to visit the mobile site, then hit "request desktop site" button any more. Considering Chrome is an awesome browser with full sync, and works very well on Jelly Bean, this might be of use to all of you. I know I was sick of having to constantly click the button.
Article: How To – Permanently Have Desktop Mode on Chrome Mobile for Android
Rooted device Instructions:
Copy the chrome-command-line.txt file attached to the post, then paste it into /data/local/ making sure to set the permissions to 755 and to remove the '.txt' file extension.
Flashable .zip, for the lazy:
You should know how to use this by now. Grab the attached ChromeDE.zip provided by XDA user djmcnz and flash away! (Thanks!) You can also drop him a thanks by visiting a post of his later in this thread.
ADB Instructions (for non-rooted devices):
Place the chrome-command-line.txt file in the root directory of your PC and rename it to 'chrome-command-line', then make sure your device is connected to your computer. When connected, issue this command:
Code:
adb push /chrome-command-line /data/local/chrome-command-line
You can also set the path on your computer where the file is located by replacing the first '/chrome-command-line' with the file location.
Cheers! Hopefully we'll see a better implementation of this in the upcoming 4.2 release.
Very useful. Instructions were clear and precise, Nice one!
thank you very well apreciated is there any chance you can write 1 on how to make it more stable?

Thanks guys, glad I could help. Wish I knew how to make it more stable! It seems that it runs much better on Jelly Bean, but us ICS users are still stuck with it being really slow and buggy

it seems in the video you just tick different boxes, how does that relate to 755??

I'm using solid explorer off of the market (a free file manager) which allows you to set the permissions of a file. In solid explorer, they are set by ticking the correct boxes, whereas in other applications they are typed in by number..

Good tip but it can be improved.
You don't need root to write to /data/local/ so in theory this trick will work for everyone, might pay to update the article.

No? When testing with a Nexus 7 unrooted you cannot navigate to Data/local through Solid Explorer. Naturally I thought it had to be rooted. If you have had success with a different file manager (or pushed it through ADB) then letting me know what worked would be great.

You'll be able to get to it in a terminal window or adb - not sure what's up with Solid, equally an update.zip will work without root.
/data/local/ is r/w for the local user and shell.
try - echo test > /data/local/test.txt on a non-rooted device, it'll work.
Actually, now that think about it more - Solid probably can't list the contents of / (root) so you can't navigate to sub directories. Can you type a path into Solid? That should work.

I'll definitely test that out and put a guide for newbies on there. Solid displays the root directory, but will not allow you to navigate to a folder inside of it. I was thinking about ease of access for the user, and assumed they wouldn't want to go the adb route. My bad, but thank you for the heads up.

If you want it as easy as possible you could provide an update.zip for those with a custom recovery - that's going to be the simplest way. If you want to do that and need some help let me know.

No worries, I can whip one up in a few minutes when I get home.
In the meantime you can have a look at some here: http://djmcnz.batteryboss.org/GNexus/mods/StockLauncher/v4/
If you want to have a play and look at the script. It will need to be different for you of course, least of all because we'll be mounting /data instead.
I'll send you a PM later on once I'm home (I'm in Europe/CET).

Hey all, I have been looking everywhere for an app or method to remotely transfer files to AND from my android device from my pc, without the restriction of having to be on my local network wifi. I'm beginning to think there may not be one available, although I can't see why not.
Any Ideas?
If all you need is file transfering, try an FTP server.

Dropbox?
Pocketcloud, or teamviewer used with dropbox can accomplish this. Remote access your pc, copy file to dropbox, and download to sd card. A little tedious, but works for me.

Those all sound like they need WiFi, sounds like he's look to use Bluetooth? I mean you got to use something.
Agreed that dropbox or similar cloud storage may be your best bet. Just set up the desktop client to sync to a folder on your computer, and to go back to your phone, you can use a program like Dropsync, which offers two way syncing between phone and dropbox.

I wish somebody could get sshdroid or quicksshd to work over 3G or 4G, but I don't know enough about VZs network. If that works for somebody, then let me know.
One could use Tasker to maintain a VPN connection. I use VPNRoot.
Team viewer now can control droid remotely.
A phone as a PPTP server would be ultimate.

I would like to be able to copy and paste files to the SD card of my Note 2 from my computer over my home network. In windows 7, I am able to see other computers in my house and transfer files between them. Is this doable with my Note2? Currently my method is copy files to drop box, then open drop box and export to SD card...
Thanks.
Yes. You can download apps I like samba file sharing or you can use es file explorers lan function to transfer files...

Have you tried airdroid
Sent from my SCH-I605 (AKA NOTE 2)
SSHDroidPro and WinSCP. Or just use Samba Filesharing
You could ask a kernel dev to implement CIFS. I've seen it on other phones so it can be done.
Whether you can find one to do it or not is another story.
Sounds like Airdroid is for you.
Man, I realized that the Note 2 won't work with Samba filesharing apps. There is some issue with the wifi interface not being detected. Lame.
SSH and WinSCP may be the only solution I know of that works.
I have been trying with no success to get my ip address to display as something different on a global level so it even changes my ip while tethering.
Can anyone please explain how to do this with either tor or proxydroid or anything like that? i am rooted but nothing works it seems.

Yes. However it doesn't totally work for me...if i check the box "tor everything" then nothing works and i get 0 traffic. But it also has a seperate box you can check to tor the tethered connection...but that doesn't work for me either. At least not with the default android tethering program in 4.2.2
Does it work for anyone else?
*edit* i use a user agent spoofer on my chrome browser on my desktop...but I don't think that would mess up anything like this would it? the only thing that makes me think it might is i always see "waiting for proxy" at the bottom of the screen with the other loading messages. but i don't use a proxy...
