Need to restore to stock Firmware, but cant connect to PC - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have some kind of physical fault with my phone where it is not recognised when it is connected to a computer by USB. A device is acknowledged but it cannot be properly connected. The phone charges but does not mount. I have tried all trouble shooting guides and now it is been reduced to a hardware fault with the handset.
I have been running a rooted phone with Omega Rom for a long time, but I need to revert it to stock, unrooted for warranty repair.
I have two problems:
1. I cannot use ODIN as cannot connect to a PC,
2. I don't have a backup of the original firmware and ROM for my phone. I did have it, but over 18 months it has been lost (my fault I know).
So, I am looking for:
A copy of a 'Three Mobile Stock S2 ROM & Kernel'. A torrent location for all the files I need (as this is the only way I can get them onto the phone with no USB)
& Instructions for how to flash the kernel and ROM and then Unroot the phone. I think I can use Mobile Odin for this.
Is there somewhere I can look up the right firmware and Kernel for my phone?
Any advice welcome,
Cheers Guys

try to use another pc.

cheers for the advice. Same problem with all PCs. Its def a hardware issue with the Phone.
Edit: Mods.. please can you delete this thread. I have posted correctly in the troubleshooting forum now. sorry for the inconvenience.
Cheers

[Q] 7 MAJOR ISSUES WITH SGS II.....Does anyone know?

I have a few points to discuss here:
1. The phone is not connecting with Kies on my laptop via Bluetooth. It is connecting only via USB Cable. Why so?
2. The phone is not pairing with my Dell BH200 Bluetooth headset. It just doesn't find it when Bluetooth is turned on.....why so?
3. The Phone ringer is erratic when you use custom ringtones (mp3 files which you copied to the phone from the laptop). When I get a call, sometimes the phone rings and sometimes it doesn't. I'm sure that there is no problem with the hardware of the phone, but this is a software issue. Maybe the phone sometimes fails to load the mp3 files from the media folder (where I copied my mp3 songs) OR maybe some app installed on the phone is interfering with the ringer......any ideas? I am getting this notification a number of times : "FAIL TO ADD MEDIA TRANSPORT" and "FAIL TO CREATE TRANSPORT". Usually when someone calls me for the first time, the phone ringer does not ring (is muted)....then only on second try it rings.
4. Is there any firewall app which can block internet connections of apps which I don't wan't to get connected to the internet without my permission? The apps that I know of require Rooting. Is there an app for unrooted phones?
5. If we Root our phone, will we get future Updates from Samsung (via the phone internet and via Kies) or will they block future updates to our phone? And will the warranty become void if we root our phone???
6. I tried to root today, but when I connect the phone (in download mode) to the laptop via USB, Odin fails to show the connection (the box meant to turn yellow on connecting, does not do so). Any ideas why?
7. Can somebody who successfully rooted their phone with KE8 kernel, post a STEP BY STEP ROOTING GUIDE specially for all the INDIAN OWNERS OF SGS II???
Will appreciate if I get point wise answers to all my questions. Thanks in advance.

But you'll have to solve your Odin issues first.
STOP those eye-catching titles for getting attention !
No firewall for unrooted phones, to take one, IS NOT A MAJOR ISSUE.
And 5 is a question, WTF has it to do with being an issue.

@B3311: Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am trying to solve my Odin not working issue with Intratech right now.
@Electrox666: Thanks for your reply. Yes, I agree #5 is a question........do you have the answer? Any answer/solution for the other issues posted in my list of issues? Any genuine solution/help will be appreciated.
Other than these issues, I am very happy with my SGS II and can proudly say that I own the best phone in the world (at present).
Cheers!
And will the warranty become void if we root our phone???
Yes as per Samsungs letter .
jje
@JJEgan: Ok, thanks for letting me know that the warranty will become void after rooting as per the official notification from Samsung. That's a downer indeed! Does it also mean that Samsung will not Update any phone software/firmware after rooting? I think under normal circumstances, Samsung updates the phone automatically via the phone internet or via Kies, whenever an update is available....am I right?

Update is via product code on Kies some update some do not i have never been able to update a custom rom .
jje
lol I had/have NONE of those issues.
All the Issues are your own fault.. because you don't know how to handle it.
check out my signature about the firewall question!
@JJEgan: Ok, so it's safe to presume that I won't get updates from Kies after flashing a custom rom? But my purpose is only to get root access so that I can run apps like Droidwall and Titanium Backup. I want to be as close to my original stock rom as possible. Also, I believe, if I want to get rid of that yellow triangle on boot, I will have to re-flash the original rom thru Odin? So my question is will I get updates from Kies (say for example, updates for Gingerbread future versions) after I re-flash the Original Kernel? Pls advise.
If you flash the original full firmware that came with the phone then yes Kies updates that when their is an update for it but that can be many weeks after stock firmware released .

By stock firmware, do you mean the stock rom? One stock rom (file size 557 MB) is available at samfirmware website....is that it?
I've downloaded two files from XDA-developers :
GT-I9100_XWKE8_insecure.tar (insecure kernel) and
KERNEL_I9100XWKE8_CL214845_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5 (Original file)
Do I have to flash the Insecure file when I use Odin & Super One Click for the first time to root? And then to remove the yellow triangle, I have repeat the same procedure to flash the Original file? But I am confused about the second (original) file which I've download coz it has the extension .md5 ...... is that the correct file type?

why not follow the instructions on the thread that you downloaded the files from?
the extension md5 means that the file will just perform an integrity check to make sure it is a 'good' download, i.e. nothing missing, etc. just use it as normal.
Thanks for your reply, Stoney73........ am going to do just that, that is follow the steps given in the thread from where I downloaded those two files from. Just got doubtful because of the different file extensions of the INSECURE (.TAR) file and the ORIGINAL (.MD5) file. Asked the same question in another forum (androidforums) and someone replied that the .md5 file is not a correct file and something bad will happen if I flash it with Odin. That's why wanted to make sure before I root my phone. So you are saying that Odin will flash both the files (.tar and .md5) in the same way and I should go ahead with rooting my phone?
@JJEgan: Ok, so I rooted my phone following the instructions given here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126522 using Chainfire's method.
Now to remove the yellow triangle, the instructions say I have to extract the zImage file from the CF-Root-SGS2_XW_ODD_KE8-v4.0-CWM4.tar file and paste this zImage file to the SD Card of the phone. But how to do that? I am now unable to view the files on the phone when connected to the laptop via USB cable. When I connect now, My Computer doesn't show the GTi9100 like it used to show earlier. I am seeing the SAMSUNG_android under Devices and Printers and can only see the properties. I cannot open it or view the files on it. Now what to do? Pls help.
Mate, you've had a lot of help here, but now it's time to stand on your own two feet. Search! Do the research! If you don't, you'll get no help.
You know how to extract a file. Do it.

I got no help from you, all right! And did u even read what I wrote before shooting off your mouth! I have already extracted the zImage file from the CF-Root-SGS2_XW_ODD_KE8-v4.0-CWM4.tar file .... what I don't know is where to paste it in the phone COZ the Phone is not showing up on My Computer like it used to earlier when connected via USB cable. Now all I am seeing in My Computer is two new "Removable Disks" which I cannot open. The phone is now showing as SAMSUNG_android in the Devices & Printers of my laptop, but I am unable to open it. So if I am unable to open it, then how to paste the zImage file in the phone!
And I didn't address my question to you, so please don't bother to answer. Thanks but no thanks!
I actually see no reason in rooting and keeping the original rom. Battery life is incredible on certain custom roms!

Like many others, I also want to remove that yellow triangle from my boot up screen. That is the reason Chainfire has given instructions on how to do it. But if somebody tells me what are the benefits of keeping the custom rom which I just flashed, then I might keep it. But the issue at hand is that after rooting, how to connect the phone to the laptop (for file transfer etc.) via USB cable. At present, when I connect the phone to the laptop, it is not showing up as it used to earlier. Now all I am seeing in My Computer is two new "Removable Disks" which I cannot open. Kies is also no longer connecting to the phone. So how to manage the files on the phone via the computer? That is the question.
is your phone set on usb debugging?
if not go to settings->Applications->Development and switch usb debugging on.
you should be able view your file in windows then

I gave you the step-by-step root guide earlier - you thanked me for that.
I told you that you had to solve your Odin issues first, which, after you telling Intratech that his "guide doesn't work", proved to be nothing more than you being incapable of reading instructions and thus couldn't put your phone into download mode. Hilarious.
I'll "bother to answer" whenever I feel like it sunshine.

[Q] Galaxy SII almost bricked please help.

I have a problem with Galaxy s2. Basically it started to drain my battery like hell.
It gets empty in about 10 hours.
Now when I want to flash the phone once again in order to get everything back as it was when I bought it I cannot. This is due to MTP connection activating itself as soon as I turn on the phone. And I cannot enable usb debugging due to that as it says that I have to remove the USB cable.
In addition my phone charges itself really fast about 2 hours. And when I try to power it on without charger plugged in it gives me charging image and yellow triangle with ! in it and thermometer aside flickering. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix my phone?
Have you tried using CWM to wipe all data + clear all cache, then do a fresh re-install?
Yes I tried it now. It still says my USB is connected when its not. And now it doesnt unlock my sim card.
Factory reset that dont work return phone to a service centre ..

Well thats the case I have voided warranty already. Wondering if there are any chances I could put old rom back before returning it?
Make a DIY USB JIG then flash it back to stock rom and have it checked.

Not sure what do you mean by DIY USB JIG but I cannot flash it because I cannot switch USB debugging on... Thats the case it shows me that USB is always connected when it isnt and when USB is connected it doesnt let to switch on USB debugging.
Route is source stock rom and Odin load stock rom into Odin enter download mode on phone and then connect cable and flash rom .
No download mode

Thank you all who have replied. I have now managed to get over the USB issue somehow but still something is wrong either with battery sensor or battery. When I power off my phone it switches on automatically and shows the thermometer and battery charge icon. Anyone else have had this problem? It also charges up to 95% and it bursts to 100% very quickly.
EDIT: Now I tried my friends battery and I did not get the flickering temp error and my friend didnt get it with my battery as well. So something now I'm totally out of ideas.

I am having the same issues here, wonder if the topic creator resolved this in any way? I am thinking of getting a new battery?
Just FYI wear a condom or something on your galaxy S II. As it turns out from service my phone supposedly has liquid damage which does not the warranty apply. I have to pay 240 euros in order to get it fixed :S
Hey Guys.
I had an S1 7 months prior to buying the S2, and have upgraded/fresh installed ROMS many many times over the past year. Once the S1 bricked during an upgrade and I was able to get it into Download Mode without using a micro-USB jig from instructions on this website. If my memory serves me correctly, it was a procedure something fairly simple like hold the Home, Volume Up and Power buttons continuously until the phone goes into forced Download Mode.
However, this procedure doesn't work with the S2 or I'm remembering it incorrectly, and I'm unable to find that instruction webpage again. Now my S2 is almost bricked showing a message I've not seen before, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
So far, I cannot get past this message and Kies 2.0.2.11071_128 doesn't recognize the device nor that emergency recovery is needed.
Unfortunately Samsung programmers haven't been quite smart enough or forward thinking enough to make Kies work from behind a proxy which requires authentication (I live and work on a university campus and the only way to the internet is via proxy and authentication) and it has never shown in the past 9 months of usage that it needs to update itself nor finds any official ROM releases. Therefore I've been forced to use Odin and ROMs from here or samfirmware.com for my updates. Until now, there has never been any major problems that I couldn't get around.
Do any of you have instructions on how I can get my S2 into download mode so as to get Odin to recognize the device? It is not possible for me to make my own JIG here in Thailand as there is nowhere for me to go purchase electronic equipment and parts such as soldering irons and resistors. I am a computer engineer and could easily build such if it were possible to get needed parts.
Thanks hugely in advance for any help offered.

Well kiss my rosy red butt-cheeks! Speaking from personal experience as tech support, I know empirically to replicate something 52 times prior to asking for assistance. This instance shouldn't have been an exception!
Directly after posting this request for assistance, I decided to try Odin once again and DANGED if this time it found my device even with the "Firmware encountered" error showing. Odin stopped around 90% and forced me to reset my S2, but this time it went right into Download mode with nary a fuss. Now Odin just successfully installed KG6.
So if there is anything to be learned from this experience, either by other users with similar issues or myself, it is "if at 1st you don't succeed, try again and again and again and again."

[Q] help please stuck on xxkp8

Hey guys, wondering if you can help me.
I got my sgs2 soon after release and got rid of all carrier info, rooted it, installed a rom and been using happily ever since.
However, about two weeks ago over on sammobile news of ics kernels appeared xxkp4 and xxkp8.
I downloaded and paid for chainfires excellent mobile odin, grabbed xxkp8 and flashed away.
At first everything seemed fine, but a couple of my favourite and most useful apps wouldn't work with ics. So, I decided to change the rom.
Hooked up the phone to a windows xp machine and the usb utility is just giving me a choice between mtp and ptp, both of which wont allow me to copy files between xp and the phone's sd card.
Under settings > wireless & networks> more > usb utilities, I can choose usb mass storage, yet when i select to turn on usb storage, it just doesn't register it clicks and nothing happens.
Additionally, even though i set all permissions when first installed, mobile odin won't load saying superuser access could not be acquired. So i go into superuser and indeed it shows zero apps with superuser access.
I am at a loss as to how to go about getting this xxkp8 off my phone given that the phone no longer wants to exchange files and folders with my pc?
Please give me a clue, even if its a nod to a thread which will help me, I am suffering from information overload trying to find what i need through the forum.
If any more info is required please don't hesitate to ask.
I will include the following info if it helps:
android 4.0.3
baseband 19100XXKE7
kernel 3.0 13 - 19100XXKP8 - CL42141
build IML74K
Have a look at the CM9 development thread. There are driver downloads (first post) available. MTP not working is a known problem. As a last resort flash a stock ROM through Odin and start again?
Many thanks for the heads up mate, trying to sift through the information on here is a proper challenge for one small of brain lol
appreciate the patience and the help!!
If you simply want to go back. Instead of flashing via Cwm. Flash via odin. I had similar problem. My mass storage would not mount but it paired with odin.

[Q] SuperSU Binary Update bricked phone

Updating SuperSU app as suggested through CWM by clicking link on the app. Phone rebooted and stuck at "Samsung". Cannot get into recovery (Power and Vol */- ). Can get into Download to but my SG2 hasn't been able to connect to a PC for a long long time (yeah, switched ports, batteries, cables, and PC's). Doesn't appear that phone wants to charge either. Usually when turned off during charging the battery is partially green and below the battery the dots light up. Now when off and charging battery is gray and rotation swirl doesn't swirl....frozen too. Phone was working without any problems prior to updating the binary (other than not connecting to PC).
Any suggestion appreciated.

The remedy is to flash stock and start over. If you have a bad usb port in the phone, then you probably need to replace that and get usb working so you can flash from Odin. Or send it to a reliable repair shop like Mobile Tech Videos.
I have read a few posts that associate Framaroot and loosing PC connection/usb mass storage on the I77. Any insight on that?

I havn't seen anything about that. Have you read anything about how to fix it? Is this issue supposed to affect hardware or firmware?
Anyway, this should have nothing to do with whether Odin will see your phone. Have you tried to enter download mode with Odin open on the desktop? You need to have "USB driver for Samsung Phones" installed on the pc in order for Odin to recognize the phone when you enter Download mode.
The Framaroot developer responds to this question. I don't understand the inference but maybe you can simplify it for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43507992#post43507992
You have brought up the changes in firmware since 4.0 to system property /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config. I needed to fix the string but didn't know how. Was on to do list.....procrastination killed my phone.....bummer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2488186
And I can't find the other thread with the post about loosing usb with Framaroot but you gave a thumbs up in this thread (not the specific post). The topic was Framaroot and you were recommending using the apk.
Also, another I777 had the same problem (bootloop) with the SU update( #4327)

I'd suggest you flash back to the latest stock, ucmd8, unless you are reluctant to use framaroot. Otherwise you could use the stock UCLL6, 4.0.4 plus root package. See the links in my signature. I assume you want something rooted so you can use Mobile Odin to install a custom kernel with CWM recovery, and then flash the firmware of your choice.
I looked at those links, but I didn't find the developer's response. Not enough information to respond to, but interesting to know.
As far as /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config, that is a text file. As long as you have root access, you just open it in a text editor and change the text string, then save the file and reboot.

[Q] Help Pls: Odin Fail

Hi
I just can't seem to get Odin to flash my S2. I am new to android hacking but I'm no 'tech-tard'. I have read a lot the Odin related threads on here and on google and can't seem to get it to work. I'll explain what I'm trying to do and what I have done so far.
What I want to do is to setup my old S2 for my mum, she is Vietnamese and would be great to have Vietnamese Language support so that menus, etc..are in Vietnamese! I have tried some locale apps but they're very limited. So basically I want to flash the phone with a firmware which has Vietnamese.
My phone is a UK Vodafone S2 and it's fully updated. The info on the phone is as follows:
Model Number GT-I9100
Android Version 4.1.2
Baseband Version I9100BULS3
Kernel Version 3.1.31-1484249
[email protected]#3
SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 3 20:24:29
KST 2013
Build Number JZ054K.I9100XWMS2
I have installed Kies, have got MTP drivers installed and have got samsung usb drivers installed (v1.5.33.0). I have Odin 1.85, 3.07 and 3.09. One thing to note is that I have never been able to connect to Kies even though all the drivers are installed and working as I can access the phone via windows explorer.
The firmware I've been trying to flash is I9100DXLSD_I9100OLBLSD_I9100DXLS8_HOME.tar.md5 This firmware also came with SS_DL.dll (i'm not sure what I'm suppose to do with this file)
I have tried using the original S2 usb cable, S4 usb cable, HTC usb cable and Nexus 7 usb cable. I have tried the front and rear USB ports on my pc (although have yet to try every single rear usb port)
I think I have done clean installs of Kies and the USB drivers, by using YourUninstaller to remove them and clean up the registry, reboot. Reinstalling Kies and USB drivers and rebooting again.
I've turned on USB debugging on the phone. The phone is in download mode. I start up Odin as admin, plug the phone in and Odin sees the phone and I get the messages 'Added!' and COMx where x is 3, 4 or 5. In Odin 3.07 or 3.09 when loading the firmware, the firmware is confirmed ok but when flash is started it stalls at 'SetupConnection'. I've left it for about 15 mins and still stuck there. In Odin 1.85 it's similar except I eventually get a FAIL after the SetupConnection step.
I'm not sure what else I can do, apart form try another computer. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Yeah, I've read that and followed it and still no luck.
That thread is the 'Bible' for these situations; there really isn't much else that isn't in the thread which can be suggested in these situations.
So...Your options are:-
*Try everything (you haven't done that yet) in the thread over and over and over and over until you get a successful flash. When these are recoverable (and the majority are), they're almost always fixed with perseverance.
*Give up & take your phone to a Samsung service centre (who will take a lot of your money) or a local mobile repair shop (who will charge you a bit less money) for diagnosis/repair. Obviously you're in their hands with regard to trusting them to honestly diagnose what's wrong & charge you accordingly.
The only other thing which comes to mind in this situation is an idea KeithRoss39 has bandied about recently; flash fails in this situation are sometimes caused by a malfunctioning USB board in the phone (this has become a very common fault with this phone as the time since it's initial release has increased).
Thing is, if this is indeed the case here, it's possible that your previous attempts at flashing have already corrupted the NAND, and only a motherboard replacement is fixing this. If this hasn't already happened & the board is faulty, any further flashing attempts might give you this result. But unless you know how to diagnose electronics like this, you have no way of knowing whether this is the case or not.
So, you can proceed as above, or you can stop attempting to flash right now & replace the USB board/port yourself before you attempt any further flashes. Keith has a guide in General (not stickied, there's a link in Hopper's thread) which will enable you to get this done quickly/easily/cheaply yourself if you decide to go down this path.

I don't think the USB board is faulty. It charges fine and I can access the phone via windows explorer, transferring and copying files.
You try uninstall all drivers (kies and samsung usb) ,and install again only a usb drivers (without kies).

Download Odin v3.07 And Connect your phone to pc using download mode. ( Power + Vol. D + Home ). And in odin click pda and choose ur downloaded tar file. Just let it flash. And see. Try Splitting that .tar file to CSC, PDA, MODEM using splitfus. Check google for further help.

I'll give that a shot.
Been reading about the default recovery console. Is it possible to flash the vietnamese 4.1.2 firmware over my uk 4.1.2 firmware using ADB? From what I've ready you could transfer the firmware to a memory card and use the apply update from external storage? Is this correct or would would it have to be done via ADB sideload from the SDK?
Thanks
Can't be done with stock on the S2 to the best of my knowledge (can with some other phones).
