[Solved] I think I killed it - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hey guys. I was using my phone to check email, browse facebook, normal stuff. When all of the sudden it emitted a high-pitch squeal and shut off. That was an hour ago. I've been unable to get it to come back on. If i pull the battery and reinsert, it'll show the Samsung logo before beginning and endless series of vibration pulses. It won't stop unless I pull the battery. I've tried getting into recovery, no luck. I tried putting it into Odin mode, but as soon as the Odin screen loaded, the phone went black and back into the vibration pulsing. I've tried pulling the SIM, memory card, new batteries, anything I can think of. I've got plenty of backups on my SD card, so wiping it isn't an issue if i could just get to a recovery screen.
Any ideas what the hell this is??

Bad battery.
Stuck power button.

Your power button may be stuck. Try flicking it with your finger.

Well, i tried booting it with only the wall power connected, no battery, but nothing. I tried flicking the power button to loosen it, but no joy there either. It feels like the power button is releasing itself like it should, doesn't feel stuck. I could possible spray a tiny bit of switch cleaner in there to loosen things up.
EDIT: What is a stuck power supply supposed to feel like? Mine feels like it's making a full movement. There's a solid click on a full press and a smaller click when releasing it. Feels like it's working. I'm tempted to just crack her open and get a better look. I'm on a replacement Blackberry while my note is down and this dumbphone is KILLING me! Gotta get the note back up and running.

The power button looks like this on the inside.
It's a tiny micro switch. Sometimes the tiny mechanics get stuck on the inside. When it's stuck, it constantly reboots. It's a very common problem and sometimes an easy fix.
Parts of your problem resemble a bad battery like capt mentioned. As well as the stuck power button symptom. You can take the phone apart and try to clean it. It's not hard to do. Spraying in the external button probably won't reach the actual button though. Sorry if our first two ideas aren't fixing your issue. Maybe someone else will come along with another idea.

I'm pretty sure we are correct.

It's the power button mine does that when it sticks high pitched noise then the black screen with vibrations

This is EXACTLY what I experienced, noise and all. Sounds like I need to take my phone apart and examine that switch. Is it as easy as blowing compressed air (PC cleaner type) through it to clear it?
EDIT: Well, I gotta give it to you guys. You were spot on. I took the phone apart and really did nothing more than tap on the switch directly and it booted right up. I hit it with some canned air just to be safe and clean it all out. It's currently charging back up and looking fantastic at this point! Thank you guys so much. You've saved me from having to go any longer with a Blackberry!!

Glad to hear you're up and running again! This pesky power button issue has plagued many.
Please edit the subject line to say [solved] so others searching may be saved.

Thanks!! In the spirit of helping others plagued by this issue, it's interesting to note that my power button always "clicked" like it was making good contact, but never worked. As soon as I cleaned the switch, it started working, the click stayed the same either way. Moral is, even though the power button feels like it's working, CHECK IT!! :highfive:

Overly sensitive power button?

Has anyone noticed the power button being extra sensitive? That is to say, on the Hero/Evo, you had to hold the power button for at least 2 seconds before the pop-up Power Options menu would display. On my 3vo, it pops up in less than a second. I'm finding it slightly annoying, because the space between "sleep" and "power options menu" is too narrow.
Not mine....

work on reseating the back shell of the phone, i had the issue too at first and i thought it was a defect, but i played with it a couple times and got it to work like a normal power button
Nope not at all, I actually have to press it more than once sometimes and harder the second time for it to work......
yea mine is a lil sensitive...cant have it my pocket because of it..pulled it out a couple times and the phone bouncing around in my pocket opened apps and almost called ppl
Throw an OtterBox on there....
you have to give it a little lovin- WON"T happen by accident.
Also - saved my3D from a nice 5 foot drop courtesy of some Crazy 3 yr olds on the 4th.
mine is like that and I hate it!!!
U guys have cases on the phone? I guess not

I actually find the new power button a little bit better to my liking, a lot easier to find in a blind poweron. But I do agree that it might be a little too sensitive. I've found that the phone turns itself on while in my pocket - which is a bad thing because on shake the led flashlight turns on lol! Of course that kills the battery...
Also when trying to turn on or off... sometimes i see the turn off, reboot menu pop up which just simply put, never happened with the evo og. And while i like the ease of use and how fast it reacts to turning off/on, it seems to be a bit of a problem ATM
not not at all sensitive. it's actually under sensitive. some time i get frustrated because i have to push it so hard in the exact sweet spot just to get it to turn on. after having it for over a week now it's getting better, but at first i couldn't even get the thing turned on.
Not mine in fact mine is kinda hard to push. I'm going to the Sprint store I bought mine from this weekend to see if I can get it switched out because I have light leaking through the ring that surrounds the search key, and it bugs the hell out of me lol. So I hope my new one is gonna be normal.
This happens to me with or without the case. I did have a very brief time where the power button would not respond at all, and discovered that the back was causing it (I had swapped the OEM 8G card for my 32).
I don't think this is a big enough problem for me to try and swap the phone out, although it is a little annoying. I suppose in time I'll learn not to push the power button too long.
I have the same problem with the sensitive power button but I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S. I'm wondering if there is dust in the way... Anybody ever find a fix or diagnose the problem for this? I've seen the same problem across multiple devices on the forums so I am starting to believe its a wear and tear type of thing.
Mine is kinda sensitive. But not as sensitive as the one I saw at my local sprint store. Interesting how it seems like no two EVOS are the same.
Good thing though is that since the button is built into the backcover... Maybe picking up another one can deliver a more sensitive/stiff experience.

Power Button

Hi everyone,
Has anyone noticed that holding the power button down for sometime actually turns the phone off? like its meant to (I guess) but even when the screen is locked? I've managed to do this accidently a few times while the phone has been in my pocket! quite annoying.
any tweaks over here ... ? im already rooted my phone...plz developers help me
It turns off if you continuously hold it for 7-8 seconds. That can't happen normally in pocket or anywhere unless you manually do it.
Regards.

Don't put your phone perpendicular to your leg whilst in your pocket.
Agree.
It is also a 1-in-a-1000 case for me so I don't really care. It takes me less than a minute to fully boot from totall off.
I hope OP gets a fix either way.
My advice for him is to buy a case which keeps the power button free from being pressed.

I reckon this feature is meant to be a fail-safe in case your device becomes unresponsive or trapped in a bootloop. Means you won't have to pull your battery. So it would probably be in your best interest to not disable this feature...
but its a good if we got disable feature ...
anyway thanks alot and waiting for a tweak

Got my Prime, but its not perfect

Hello again, I got the Prime today but the screen has a bow at the top in the middle. It is not flush with the rest of the tablet. The other problem is it doesn't seem to be charging so I am a bit confused about that. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
First thought is you should maybe think about swapping it out. It shouldn't bow in the middle at all. Mine is flat as are all the ones I've played with in stores.. Second thought is it should also be charging lol .. what's your plan for when the battery dies???
Sounds like a dud to me. I'd swap it if I were you maybe
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
Ok, seems to be charging now but the bow seems a worry.
Yeah.. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a bow in the middle
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
Exchange it where you bought it from.
Its going back tomorrow. There is nothing wrong with the tablet other than GPS. Wi Fi is great. Seems like its just a loose clip or something.
Swap it out. There shouldn't be any bow in it. Tablet should be flat. Don't wait and swap it out immediately.
lol how is this even a question? we all know Asus QC is crap, any imperfections swap it out ASAP!
Hey... mine didn't come with a bow?!?
Wonder if it's too late to exchange it for one with a bow on top.
Got my second one and from what I have seen it has no light bleed and the frame is all good. I haven't really tuned it on I only saw the screen when it was showing me it needed charging.
Well the second one is great,b but with bith of mine I occasionally get a faint clicking noise whenever I hit the back, home or multitasking button and when I pick up an app on the home screens. Anyone else get this?

a faint clicking noise when hitting an onscreen software button? if so, cut off the sound for onscreen touches and such. doesn't really make sense. just sounds like you have it to make sounds when you press something on the screen. this can be cut off in the settings.
Ok, thanks for that. The last thing seems to be the battery. I read the instructions for once and it said to charge it all up. So i charged it till it was green and then powered it up for the first time. So as the instructions say i need to break the battery in. At the moment i am getting about 5-6 hours. The pad is on balanced with auto brightness. Does this seem normal for new battery. I would hope to end up with 9-10 or are my expeditions too high?
I will do a new topic cos its a new question

broken power button?

So I've been playing with my phone for the last couple of days and recently I've been getting random reboots. I thought it was the ROM so I rolled back to a ROM I wasn't getting the issue and experienced the same. I did switch from CWM to TWRP and started getting the problem right around the same time. What happens is the phone goes dark like it's going to reboot, it does it's vibrate to say it's awake and repeats the vibrate roughly once a second until I push the power button a few times or until I pull the battery. I've been able to replicate this by holding the power button down.
Has anyone experienced this issue?

it still functions but it feels touchy. it's very easy to activate it. I'm wondering if the hardware switch is loose and out of place. I'm still debating on tearing it down or calling Samsung and getting it replaced, but I'm not sure if I really want a referb or some tech playing with my phone.
A referb word be preferable to a broken power button.

haha I doubt it, I'll call them tomorrow to find out and if it's going to be too long I'll just tear it down and take a look at it. I have been meaning to look at the possibilities of adding an inductive charger to the phone, maybe this is the opportunity.
I'm having exact same problem. power buttong gets stuck if I press it. phone reboots and just vibrates after reboot without going to recovery or samsung logo. I have stopped using power button and enabled wakeup screen on volume button (SlimROM). Also added "Power" to power widgets in notification drawer settings. I try to avoid pressing power as much as possible.
i'm thinking of calling Samsung support or open phone myself to check it out. let me know if you got it fixed by Samsung. how long did it take to get the phone back? did you restore phone to stock rom before sending it? was it covered under warrenty?

I have an issue similar to this, im thinking my issue is loose connections. what mine does is turn on for a bit and then restart. I've been able to resolve mine by flashing this rom.

I would try taking your phone apart and cleaning the power button with a q-tip and a LITTLE alcohol. if that fails i'd try to flash the rom. Good Luck
attends nimeno
did flashing the rom every fix it op? or did you just go ahead and replace the power button? if the rom did fix it, can someone repost the link? the link is broken.
Again i would try cleaning the power button off first.
to do so:
there should be 9 small phillips screws around the battery -remove those
then the metallic looking rim around the phone has clips that clip the back portion to the rest of the phone. use a finger nail and seperate the grey from the white around the phone, unlatching the clips. remove the back cover and locate the power button(on the left when looking at it from the back. dap the q-tip in a tiny bit of alcohol barely moistening the cotton. apply the q-tip to the button getting a small amount on it and press the button until it clicks smoothly. on the cover you took off you can remove the button it has a little rubber angle on each end holding it in. clean around that also. reassemble and test.

Personally I wouldn't ever Odin with this issue, a reboot while flashing a new bootloader potentially boom. My issue was persistent through all roms and even in recovery which lead me to believe it was hardware. What I did to solve the issue was I pulled the case off, battery out and just played with the button for an hour or so. Felt how it clicked and if it was clicking funny. After that it worked fine. By playing with it I don't mean mashing on it, I mean gently and normal clicking, feeling where it caught and didn't. What it felt like to me was some lint under the button which eventually worked it's way out. Hope this helps

I had this issue of my power button sticking today. I took the phone apart and used some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip to get some on the button and pressed it repeatedly. I did that a few times and used some canned air to dry it out a few times. Put it all back together and button is working like new again.

If its not staying on at all then i agree with you. But if the problem is off and on and you've already tried cleaning the button thats really one of your last resorts. if the phone reboots during a flash you will get a firmware download error and you will have to reflash. may take a few tries but if the phone eventually stays on it'll be fine.

As I agree with you. Glad we're on the same page with a power issue like that, I'd check via the recovery image to see if it happened there and continue troubleshooting.

So I've confirmed it is the power switch. Any way to replace it?
dweezy you must have super tough fingernails. I recommend two guitar picks, working them as a pair -- one pixk to separate the bezel from the body, the other to hold the place as you move around the bezel.

Phone is stuck in a boot loop and this is what I know so far. Phone is on stock ROM, power button is working fine, I can get to recovery and OS and download mode, and while phone was charging I took the battery out and the phone keeps vibrating. I now know it's a hardware problem for me (I think), but I can not pin point where. Any advise would be helpful cause I really love my note and this is just breaking my heart. :crying:

When you get into recovery does the phone stay on? If so how long 10 mins? Hours? If it stays on I would assume its software.
Phone stays on forever in those modes, I'm gonna flash a different ROM to see what happens .... so I'm back to say it's a hardware problem. Same exact thing happens with liquid JB, paranadroid, and CM 10...did a clean wipe before installing each one too. Friend pointed me to some sites talking about a battery failure causing phones to do that so I'm gonna order a new one and see what happens...if this fails I have to get a new phone...and continue to work on my baby.

Phone reboot before finishing flash and/or download

Hi,
My note has started to act weirdly not too long ago. i had a custom firmware installed on it and it was working fine. i decided to change the firmware to put it back on stock Rogers and again it worked fine. maybe 1 week or 2 after the phone started to go into boot loop, even keeping the display off and just vibrating. i've been able to get into the recovery and download mode. i tried several way to fix the boot loop but in vain. i left the phone on my desk for a couple of weeks since i didnt had much time to work on it. now i'm trying to start working on it but i ended up with more errors!
now:
- my phone does get in download mode but reboot by itself even before i have time to flash anything with odin.
- i've only been able to get in recovery mode once, tryied to wipe to factory, but then rebooted by itself again.
whatever i do now i can't stay in any modes more than 5 sec until the phone restarts by itself...
Any tips and trick to have my phone working again?
Thanks in advance!
It sounds like the infamous stuck power button has plagued your device.
Try flicking the back of your phone by the power button with your finger. That's been a common fix. Another one is flicking the power button itself. If those methods fail you can try taking it apart and cleaning it. It is a very small tiny microswitch. Spraying cleaners or anything from the outside won't work. It's not hard to take apart, but I hope flicking it helps.

Hey guys thanks for the quick answer. i really happy to know that it's a kind of common problem. the things is, could you explain me what you mean by flicking my phone? english is not my first language so i don't fully understand what i need to do :s like i should swiftly hit my finger with my phone by the power button to "unstuck" the button?
hummm don't mind that, i just took it appart, pretty easy job. so now, i spray contact cleaner on the switch itself?
