[Q]Headphone button not working - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
My current phone is a Thl W200 and it's got Jelly Bean 4.2.1 and I'm rooted.
My problem is with the headphone button which does not work. Before I had a Sony Xperia J and the headphones that I have used to work with it( the button, when pressed, did various commands such as play/pause/next etc.) but now the button does absolutely nothing when I play a media file.
I've run a few tests and I found out that my smartphone has CTIA standard (just like the Xperia J) and my headphones are compatible so there's no problem there. I also tried with a CTIA to OMTP cable to see if it works and nothing, the button doesn't control the music player.
One strange thing that I noticed is that if I get a phone call and I press the headphone button the call is answered, so it must work, somehow; Plus if I keep the button pressed the screen is locked and unlocked.
So my question is, if anyone knows, what can I do in order to use that little headphone button in order to control the music player?
P.S- I've also tried a few apps such as button controller, philips headset manager etc but they didn't work, the click was not registered.
Oh and another thing, I installed the key test app and when I pressed the headphone button the app didin't register any keys being pressed.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!

iPhone headset on HTC Hero

hello,
i have HTC Hero with Villain ROM v. 13. i need to skip to next song with long press Vol UP, and previous with long press Vol DOWN, on EELinux ROM i can make this.
please help me to modify settings so go with long press Vol UP next song.
also i have iPhone 4 headset and work only play/pause button, i need to skip song or increase volume with headset buttons.
please help me and sorry for my english.
I am surprised to see that the vol up /down buttons did anything for you with the iPhone headset, the onlything I ever saw working was the middle button witch seems to have the same effect as the middle button on the HTC Headset.
maybe If you find out the intents the buttons on each specific headset triggers you can help devs implement it.
I unfortunatly cannot do this myself as both my apple and HTC Headsets broke.
Can you actually call with the Apple Headset? For me the apple mic never worked.
PS: AFAIK there is no Setting for the wired buttons, it either works or it doesn't.

iPhone headset volume control

I use the iPhone headset a lot when out and about, because I don't like the being insulated from the surrondings. The iPhone headset has volume controls as opposed to the SGS2's, that only has the play/pause button. Now, I would like to know, if it's technically possible to enable support for volume control on the iPhone headset?
I understand that one would have to alter the sec_jack.kl, which is found in system/usr/keylayout/. Something like this:
key 163 MEDIA_NEXT WAKE
key 165 MEDIA_PREVIOUS WAKE
key 226 HEADSETHOOK WAKE
key ??? VOLUME_UP WAKE
key ??? VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
However I have no clue how to find out the key mapping for the volume buttons on the remote control.
Help is much appreciated.
play/pause? take a look a the manual, i can switch tracks with my original headset.
I would HIGHLY appreciate it if this was solved. I have the Klipsch X10i headphone..amazing stuff..and the center button works, but obviously the volume buttons dont. It would be nice if it did!

You missunderstood, I know one can change tracks with the original headset. And even on the iPhone headset the middle button works. However, what does not work are the volume control buttons. And that's what I'd love to add sec_jack.kl file.
Changing the file won't work. Use logcat to check what keys are fired - no keys are fired in the Android system by the volume buttons. At all. So unlikely to get a fix using this method...
i got iPhone in-ear headset with one button..
but the microphone doesnt work at all in calls..
the button works 4 playing/pausing tracks..
but what to do 4 microphone..
can any1 help me plz????TIA
Did anyone ever come up with a creative solution to this?

The only solutions are the apps which allow you to use the middle button for volume. Volume buttons don't work.
Still no way to make it works ?
I'll really loved to...

Still no way. Even the new Klipsch Android earbuds have only a single button...
FYI, the Klipsch app in market which is designed to be used with their headphones to allow multi tap of dingle button to add volume and other functionality works on non klipsch headphones also, and is free!!!!!!!
As I know there are some possibilities with re-soldering some resistor inside HF remote control.
For now there are no any messages in kernel log for Iphone's volume keys.
I know this is a resurrection of an old thread, but this is relevant current information...... The stock S4 earphones have a volume control, and I have tested them working on my S2.......

Beats by Dr. Dre half working

I've tried my SoloHD headphones on Sony S Tablet, and I've seen that them work so well (differently from the Xperia MiniPro who has a different audio jack setting). The central button when is pressed, pauses the song, another press to play (in music app, youtube etc); but the volume buttons and the double click on the center don't work. I think is requested a root solution to modify the key mapping, but until now is a great feature using this headphone on S1

Why the audio control doesn't work in Xperia Z2 ?

In my previous phone LG G2, any headphone with audio control would work without a problem (that have three buttons (Vol +, pause , Vol -), double clicking Vol+ will skip to the next song, and Vol- to get to the previous song.
In my xperia Z2, that is not the issue, pause button will raise the volume up, the same thing to Vol+ button.
even the headhpones with the only mic and one button will raise the song volume instead of pausing.
Is there any way to fix this ?
Never had this issue, and I've used many types of headsets with my device (htc, samsung, sony, nokia) and even bt stereo headsets.
is this happening with the Walkman app only, or with any audio app you use ? have you tested other apps ?
Yes, it is universal, some people mentioned because Z2 use connector CTIA instead of the older OMTP standard, but apperantly is not that, some people get to headset to work and others not.

volume not working with S21 headphone

The Samsung Galaxy S21 got rid of the phone jack from previous models and now has only a USB-C connection. I bought a USB-C-to-phonejack converter so I could use the headphones I had from my S7 phone. It works when I am using the headphones to listen to music or watch videos. By "works" I mean not only do I hear sound through them, but I can control the volume either using the phones controls or the built-in controls on the headphones. EXCEPT! Except when on a phone call. When I use the headphones when using the phone, the volume control does nothing. Neither the controls on the phone itself, or the controls on the headphones. I end up deafened because the volume is at max and can't be turned down. Again, this is only while speaking on the phone; other apps let me use the volume controls.
Any ideas on ways to fix this?
Thank you,
S.

I can't guarantee that this will work. But often what seems obvious to me is something other people miss completely. (And the other way around too.)
When you press the volume down or up rocker on the phone, have you noticed the three horizontal dots at the top of the onscreen volume indicator? If you tap on that 3-dot menu, multiple vertical volume indicators appear. I haven't tested with a USB-C audio jack dongle but I am betting that if you have the dongle plugged in (regardless of whether the earphones are plugged into the dongle), one of those vertical volume sliders will be specifically for the dongle/USB-C output.
Give this a try and let us know if this works. If it does, I realize this might be annoying to do every time. But maybe then you can find a utility in the Play store that allows you to set individual volume levels.
Good luck.
P.S. I fully understand if you prefer the wired earphones. But I can tell you that when I use bluetooth earphones of various kinds, simply pressing the volume rocker does reduce/increase phone call volume.

Thank you. I never really noticed those dots in the volume control; just ignored them all this time! I pressed them and see the extra options. I haven't tried the USB-C dongle yet... I just packed it away for a trip this week. I'll keep it in mind though and try it as soon as I unpack.
