Hi Guys!
I wanted to know if the screen, if set to its maximum brightness can be used as a sort of flashlight in a dark room? The reason is that, while I might not miss the led light for the camera, I do find having an LED as a flashlight EXTREMELY useful. Specifically, how far is the reach of the brightness of the screen (i.e. in meters or in feet)?
I'm going to buy a new phone and am deciding between the Z ultra and the Z1.

It's fairly bright if you disable "adapt to lighting conditions" and open a blank page in Chrome. I used to use my old iPhone's (first gen.) screen as a flashlight (it didn't have a flash), and it worked very well

Yeah it will work fine. Comparable to other smartphones. (larger screen, more lighting produced)
It will however depend on your night vision. So if you've been asleep for say 20-30 mins, (the time it takes for your vision to adjust to night) then using the screen will look very bright. But going from a well light environment and then using the screen in a dark room, wont really help much. That's just night vision for ya!
to compare with my one x its not as bright and for me no I can't use it as a flashlight.
I always have to use maximum brightness when going outdoor

I was just standing outiside and noticed that I couldn't read the screen of my new Galaxy S2 which I never noticed on my Nexus S. So I compared the two in direct sunlight.
Isn't the sAMOLED+ supposed to be brighter than the original sAMOLED screen?
Is my screen less bright than other sAMOLED+ screens?
My Galaxy S 2 is definatly brighter in sunlight than my Nexus S.
although i have turned off my auto brightness and whacked it right up on both..
At brightness zero the nexus s is brighter than the galaxy s 2.
I noticed that in bright sunlight, I can't see the screen at all on my SGSG2 with it set to zero, which causes a bit of a problem upping the brightness! On the Nexus, I could see well enough to change it.
I think at full brightness though, the SGS2 is brighter. My retinas haven't recovered from accidentally setting 100% whilst reading at night.
I've been wondering whether there is a way to boost the brightness, I was going to make a topic about it.
Some reviews I've seen say they had to turn the screen down to lowest brightness as the screen is so bright, etc. however my screen is nothing special in terms of brightness really and I have it on full, with auto adjust off colours are good though.

yes, I did that. the pictures are taken with both screens on 100%
I guess my screen is just not as bright as others :/
Also, under Settings -> Display, make sure that "Auto Adjust Screen power" is disabled... this option tries to save some battery by lowering the brightness when the image displayed is brighter : It can be useful in movies but it's just useless and annoying when you're browsing or reading.
PS : And SuperAMOLED+ is not supposed to be brighter than sAMOLED, it's the same without the pentile matrix. When samsung announced an improvement in battery life and brightness they were still comparing it to LCD screens from a few years ago.

and yes, your probably right about samsungs claims as well, I probably subconsciously interpreted samsungs claims the best way possible ... (so I had a reason to go buy it).

well it is possible to increase the brightness but it takes some development, like supercurrio did for the 2.3.3 kernel for the nexus s and cm7 sgs1 kernel with the voodoo app.
Dont know if hes gonna do the same for the sgs2, i really like it on my sgs1 for sure.

Ok, so when it's really bright outside my lcd is not bright enough to see and when I'm in my bedroom with the light on, the lcd is way to dark to see as well. The Auto brightness isn't really working I don't.... I want it to go to full dark when there's very very low light and full bright when there's a lot of light. That doesn't sound to difficult, right?

Comparing my G5 with my brothers Samsung J5 at the weekend and I was disappointed with my screen brightness. It was noticeably dimmer and harder to read in the bright sunlight.
Can this be improved?
Any information would be helpful. That's my biggest gripe with this phone

Have you thought it might be a problem with the hardware in your phone? There is no other phone that beats the sunlight readability than my G5, Amoled screens are awful to read in sunlight and other lcd screens even worse. The G5 in sunlight is perfectly readable in full summer sun at 75 % on mine.

Sunlight legibility on this is very very good....but it must be on AUTO brightness control. If you move into bright sunlight you can see the phone brightness jump into boost mode (Like latest gen samsung phones) and it is super readable in direct bright sunlight... As bright as my s7 edge in daylight (and it is BRIGHT). Had a nexus 6P and loved it, but its AMOLED panel was utter pants in bright daylight...lucky if it hit 350 nits. The G5 (and the S7 edge) have very good daylight screens. Recommended outdoor viewing phone.
I think that the software is still a bit buggy with this feature. It works, then it doesn't. I wish I could manually enable it or at least set it to start even if the sunlight is not directly aimed at the sensor. But when it works, it is extremely bright.

It doesn't make any sense.. 100% should have been the maximum. I guess LG didn't want people to use it often and drain the battery quickly.

My guess is that going over 100% it alters the colors to achieve visibility, otherwise it doesn't make any sense, I agree with you

Rate this thread to express how well you can see the LG G6's display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Well i have used the phone in direct sunlight and cant really say anything bad about it is readable so tha i can take calls, read texts but i wouldn't go out and start watching a video since when i say direct sunlight its like 90+°F lol but if i sit in a sunlight area with a bit of wind then yes phone is plenty bright enought for me to watch content on and enjoy it
For me it deserves 4 stars. LG G6 is more than sufficiently visible under direct sunlight.
It's pretty amazing to me that nobody other than Samsung has figured out oled for mobile screens. You know lg has been working on it for years, but for some reason they just can't mass produce it. Samsung has it mastered.
Actually LG isn't really starting to dabble in small OLED until next year.
As far as screen quality goes I saw a review stating measured 557 nits, as bright as the iPhone 7. Color accuracy was better than the iPhone and S7. Gamut was a little disappointing with 136% sRGB vs 197% for the S7. All in all a great display, probably the best LCD ever put in a phone.

i didnt know that... i guess i meant they are far, far ahead of anyone else in mobile oled displays
im very impressed with the lg g5's display. super bright, very rich in color. and crazy sharp.
It's summer season where I'm at and yesterday I was at the beach. Visibility is low in outdoor bright light.
Probably a weird question, but how is this phone when using with polarised sunglasses?
My Z2 turns to black in some angles in portrait mode and completely black in horizontal.

I will have pretty good comparison. HTC 10 was having highest ppi and regarded as the best lCD display. However outdoor visibility was extremely bad. I am not sure but I think it is a characteristics of LCD display . One thing I notice that even for camera HTC 10 was relying on display. Whenever I was opening camera app the screen was automatically turning 100% bright and then comeback to normal after closing the app. It happen with third party camera app as well. I will report once I get G6.

my experience: under sunlight (outdoor) in automatic brightness it is very difficult to see..... the always on display is completely invisible!!!!

Don't use auto brightness. Auto brightness is buggy in most devices. Try to do it manually.

You can see the display in all angles. Slightly worse with rainbow-effect in some angles, but still visible.
Anyone know how it compares with the LG V20 display?

Yes it may be buggy however according to http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-g6-review-752130/
the LG G6 display actually gets brighter than 100% when it is set to AUTO.
"Putting it through our testing, we found the display to have a max manual brightness of 556 nits, which is boosted to a very respectable 663 nits when auto brightness is engaged under direct light. In sunlight, this is likely to be even higher"
I have no way to test this myself. The display is just barely usable in direct sunlight. Better than my G3 though. I wish it was better in this regard since I use this as my motorcycle GPS sometimes.

Sorry for you but in the same condiction i see all very well and compared to my previous device (Samsung Galaxy s4, Redmi Note 2 and Lg G3) i think LG G6 is better of all of them, on automatic brightness too...

Do you use auto brightness and/or a screen protector? I guess some phones have brighter screens than others...
You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the LG G6's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
It could be a tad darker, but if you use the "Comfort view" setting in notification menu, you can turn down blue light which works just as well. This setting is highly customizable.
To me, this is the weak point of the screen. It will get acceptably dim, though, if you activate both battery saver and comfort view, but who wants to go through those steps each time you want to read at night? I've just been using one of the night shift apps to dim the screen during night hours.
Anyone notice the auto brightness toggle not sticking? AT&T model.

Thanks for the tip, this combo does make the screen acceptably dark enough.
Has anyone had any luck with automating lg's settings? I have not been successful with Tasker and would really like to schedule this based on time and ambient light sensor.

I personally didn't think the yellow tint that Comfort View offers helped me. Instead, I used System UI tuner (This app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zacharee1.systemuituner&hl=en) to enable the stock android night mode. If you want to try it, it essentially works the same but the tint is more red-ish and is more tolerable in my opinion. However, the intensity of the tint can't be adjusted.
Anyways, I do agree with you that the display should get a bit darker.
Coming from a GS4, the minimum brightness is amazing, especially if you use it combined with the battery saver option, it never seemed too bright, whilst on my S4, i often used the screen filter app to lower minimum brightness
