Editing an .apk - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know how to edit an .apk? Specifically I want to edit the mythmote app, to change its glaring light button colors to something darker and suitable for a home theater.
I suspect the apk has an image file for each button, so it should be a matter of extracting those, editing in Gimp, and reassembling the apk.
But I've never done this before. Any guidance?

I would recommend taking a look at APK Multi-Tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1310151. It will allow you to easily decompile, edit the graphics you want, and then sign and re-compile the apk. Let me know if you have any questions or need help in the process.

Thanks, but I'm a Linux type and can't even successfully install or run MultiTool. I realized I lack Java in my XP install in VirtualBox, so I went to the Java site and tried to install that. Hit Agree and Download, choose a different install directory, and *POP* it goes away and does nothing more. The install dir is empty.

I would recommend trying to install it in the default directory the installer presents you with, also keep in mind Windows XP has alot of compatibility issues if you can I would use Windows 7 for your virtual machine.

Winduhs just doesn't make sense, so I installed Eclipse and the Android programming plugin. Imported the MythMote source code and banged away at it.
I am very happy with the result. I run this app on a 10" tablet to control my home theater and before, it would shine as bright as the Sun, forcing me to turn the tablet down while watching TV. The button backgrounds are drawables (not pngs), so I had to figure out gradients, change linear to radius gradient, replace the icons with better ones, put radii on corners, etc. I still have some tweaking to do, like figuring out how to change the text color in the number pad, and replace the TVGuide button with a Delete function (which I use all the time). No idea where to find these...

Very nicely done, you did a good job modifying things you might even consider sharking the apk file with others who may want similar features to the changes you made :good:.

apktool for windows

Thanks Shimp. I've made a patch, but they're not going to want it because I also develop the MythTV patch for the R5000 digital recorder. Long story, but the R5000 is Very Disapproved Of (for purely political reasons) and is Frowned Upon with extreme predudice by Myth devs. I know one of them specifically asked for a darker MythMote like this, but at the same time told the MythMote dev to not give me any info as I also work on the R5000.
So, no soup for him. Politics cuts both ways.

NeoRose Theme OEM+SYS Packadge.

Ok following the thread here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3475070#post3475070
I have managed to get my hands on the OEM and SYS packadges for Neorose. If someone could please incorporate it into korands clean 3.1 rom for me i would greatly appreciate it. this theme looks awsome and i'm dying to use it on my prophet and i'm sure many others would like to give it a spin too.
BEST OF ALL : its only 3.3MB big, think about it, you will have an awsome rom with Loads of space availible ....

Does that mean you gonna put it into a rom ?
even if some tweaking and editing has to be done, it will be worth it
Nice theme looks like a change from m2d and it should run well on the prophet less clutter
yes it is a nice change from M2D...
you should really check out the youtube vid here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xgziG6G-Xo
Thing about the prophet is that it has no number pad and while driving it is hard to use with one hand, you practicly have to take out the stylus to do anything with it.
Whereas with this theme your whole desktop is controlled via the d-pad. Up and down moves thru the menu's and left and right thru the sub menus. the middle button is to open any app. the icons are nice and big so it is easy to see what you are doing, the sofkeys change according to the menu. you can also run apps directly from inside java as if they had shortcuts on your desktop without having to open java first.
the theme is very customisable, it has a chome configurator app that allows you to add any app into the menu, you can give it your own personal name, you can assign any icon you want or use the default one, the icon can even be a jpg, bmp or png pic. you can even link apps from the system folder or the connections menu.
there are also hundreds of different customised themes for neorose at freyedeys website.
Lets just hold thumbs and hope someone can cook it into a rom for us
where there's a will, there's a way....
thanks raymerjacque for your concern....

I think it's possible to do something work like this as a theme for SPB Mobile Shell...
Maybe someone could try...
Anyway, where did you find it? I would realy like to get my hands on the CAB file!
The files are OEM and they don't work in build 21015 also it might need some work as it's for none touch screen phone i am sure this theme has been ported to spb mobile shell so that could be a option

the idea is not to make it into a touchscreen version. the idea is to keep it the way it is and just fix it to work with the prophet roms.
this UI will allow you to work your whole desktop with just one hand via your D-pad, what more can a person ask for ? All you gotta do is press up, down, left, right and enter. the UI runs very smooth and is very easy to operate.
I dont think putting this into spb mobile is such a great idea, it has too many features that spb just cannot replicate.
Question is, is there anyone skilled enough to make this work on existing roms or build a new rom for it ??
ok, after much digging and asking NOOB questions and reading about a thousand threads in hundreds of different forums i finaly managed to figure all of this out.
this theme needs 2 items to run.
1. sliding panels - it is a built in homescreen gui that is designed by microsoft on the smartphone WM6.1 ( windows mobile standard edition ).
2. Chome, which is the customiser that allows you to tweak sliding panels and manipulate it the way you want it.
so if anyone out there wants to make this work, you gonna first have to port sliding panels from a wm6.1 smart phone rom.
Chome is availible for download here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=393104
but without sliding panels homescreen, chome is usseless.
Well Id like to help but i have no idea how...
Im a total noob but if there is something easy to do id be more than happy to do it...
I may help asking the noob questions but as i see you have already done it all
But really nice program though and im glad that youre that ambitious to make it work.
Just keep it up and lets hope something will come out after all

[APP] Lolcats viewer - UPDATE 15/08/09

Just a little application I've been working on to get back into programming, using xml (it uses the rss feed from icanhascheezburger.com), some image processing (scaling mainly) and threading (to make the interface able respond and update while downloading).
This is the first functional release of this program, I think without any (major) bugs. The next releases will focus on cleaning up the code to the point where I can release the source for all to tinker with.
It's built for devices with the .NET Compact Framework 3.5, so if it doesn't work, make sure you have the right version of the compact framework installed.
Features:
- resolution independant, will work on all possible resolutions (even unconventional ones) because the interface is scaled (though there is not much of an interface).
- works on both touchscreen and non-touchscreen devices: swipe left/right to switch images and tap the image to open it with the native viewer (to zoom and/or save it to disk), or do the same with the hardware dpad left/right/enter.
Ofcourse, if you find any bugs, feel free to drop a message inhere.
UPDATES:
Version 1.0.1 now available for download!
Changes:
- New right softkey menu allows for updating the RSS feed and exiting
- Left softkey brings a random lolcat for you to laugh at
Great stuff now I can haz lolz on ma fone
hahaha great app
edit: a randomization would be nice ...
Definitely gonna grab this.
But what I have been wanting is an app that lets you create your own. Take a picture, caption it (with different font syles, and placements) and save it, or send it... or even reopen it and re-edit it.
I see way too many funny things in my daily travels, and wanna share it.
Screens would be nice.
nice tiny 14k app
the other day i came across a 250k app that just turns wifi on/off. kudos mate
rofl i always wondered where to get these picz, now i has da link
nice app, hilarious indeed
Great app!
I was going to point out a bug where the latest post wasnt showing in the app, but I checked and it seems that it's not in the rss feed so it's all good.
I'd love to see the source code, I'm working on an app which would really benefit from being able to swipe left and right between forms, and I'm interested in how the images are scaled. If it's not too much trouble, I'd love to have a peek at it
Excellent idea!
Im am sorry in advance, but I just HAD to... ^Yº

Actually, I think I just had a brainwave - I'm going to play about with MouseUp and MouseDown and recording MousePositon to detect a gesture.
It worked, thanks for the inspiration
WOW Great idea I always wanted a wall mounted screen dedicated to lolcats, until that happens pocket size will do
Thanks all for the replies. I doubted if I should post this as I only made it as a test for myself, but now I'm glad I did. In the next few days I'll be cleaning up the code, and per request I'll add a random lolcat-function.
Oh, and StarMonkee: that's exactly what I did, when MouseDown is triggered I record the position, and when MouseUp is triggered I check the difference and if the difference is bigger than 20 (or something like that) I go to the next, if it's smaller than -20 I go to the previous. If it's in between those two the movement is not big enough and it's recognized as a tap. I'm not sure on if the values were 20 and -20, but it's something like that I think

[WIP/MOD] - SeePU / SeePU++ for ICS - (Devs/Coders Please Apply!)

[WIP/MOD] - SeePU / SeePU++ - ICS Fully Compatible Version

}
(Picture from my HTC Evo 4G LTE - ICS)
[Note the same blue bar in the statusbar, but NO red circle and NO white number - the same should appear in the green bar directly to the left of the blue bar]
---
Is there anyone up for the challenge of making a FULLY working ICS compatible version of SeePU / SeePU++?
All other features already work in ICS, except the one deal-breaking feature (for me at least - and is the whole reason for my post!) is the numbers in the statusbar (the small red circles with white numbers inside) - they are not working in ICS.
As far as I know, it has to do with some files (the red circles) that are in Gingerbread's framework-res.apk, but not in ICS's framework-res.apk
I'm thinking that SeePU calls upon these small circle images directly from the framework-res.apk file, and since they are not in ICS's framework, they don't show up at all.
Now, my thought was: maybe I could just Ninja/Metamorph the files needed (which I think just be the red circle images - .png files I believe) into ICS's framework-apk.res, then it would work (but again, I'm skeptical it would be this easy...)
---
Now, if memory serves me correctly, these red circles are located in Gingerbread's framework-res.apk - and I can pull them from it if someone needs them. (My OG Evo with CM7 is still working, running GB 2.3.7)
Another method I believe will work (But the coding aspect that I have no experience in doing), is by adding the circles directly into the SeePU .apk file, and have them called upon from within SeePU's .apk (as opposed to having them called upon from the framework-res.apk)
---
And I want to mention, every other aspect of this app works 100%. The only part missing (and to me, it's the biggest deal-breaker of the app that I miss the most, and the reason I haven't used this app since, is because of that. Thess red circles and white numbers inside that represent either 1.) the Total CPU RAM MB and/or 2.) the Total Network KB/s Download.
---
So please, if an experienced coder wants to help me work on this it would be greatly appreciated! - zmag
---
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: I will only provide copies of this app to serious devs/coders. (I will not be posting public links. I do not condone piracy whatsoever.) I need some sort of proof of your previous coding experience. (i.e. Any apps you've worked on etc.) before I even consider sending these app to you. ("I'll help!" is not good enough, unless I recognize you from here) - Just simple proof you are a coder and willing to help me out will suffice.
I'm asking for help because I'm sure someone here has the expertise to tackle this seemingly small project. I only want to use this is a personal version for myself and will not be releasing it to anyone. The only people that would be allowed to use this mod would be whoever helps me create it, and myself. That's IT!. Period. And again, I can't stress enough I will only provide these apps to serious devs/coders; (I would prefer people who are already familiar with this app, and already have it purchased; but I'm desperate (I really, really miss this app, and have waited for an update for far too long. Which I know 2 years have passed, so that's not going to happen.) So anyone who thinks they're up to the challenge, please respond.
This is an app I used to use religiously every day, and after having to switch to ICS (and the fact this app has been discontinued from further development) - I would greatly appreciate anyone who is willing to help accept the challenge.
I don't believe this will require a ton of work, in regards to coding etc. I really believe that the circles & numbers aren't showing up is because it's calling on files directly from the framework-res.apk file - and since they don't seem to be in ICS's framework-res.apk, that's why they aren't showing up in the statusbar. But I'm not -that- experienced with coding, so I need the help of someone(s) with more experience.
Please, thank you for reading my plea! If you're interested, I hope to see some interest from anyone who's up to the challenge! - zmag

Love this app.now if there was just some way to add the date.
Love the White face. So easy to read even when screen is dimmed.
The app doesn't work for me, don't know why
@_MinusZero_ how the heck did you do that?! Get pics from Google and piece em together!?
@_MinusZero_, thank you for the first watch face . I used it and edited it to fit my needs and wanted to share with everyone. I just used gimp, and this website: cooltext.com to create the numbers and I put my last name there instead of android. I might put something else. I used Batman Forever font from the cooltext selection. Enjoy .
It's very easy to edit everyone. Just use gimp or photoshop to change the HUE of the colors. That way all the cyan color can change to whatever color you like. Also, I didn't have the best lighting, but the watch face looks even better/brighter in person.
PNG Files for you to use:
Just thought someone might want to see the white face you did.
Really like it, easy to read, might change the 3 and 9 to black also.
Simple one I made:
Would love if this included the option to include a second hand and a date as well.
Phew only took me 4 hours xD I'm finally done creating my own watchface with photos from my old watch. Looks pretty neat in my opinion!
Some pretty cool WearFaces there guys!
I'll add them to the list once I'm able to get to a computer later.

The only images from Google are the Ornate hands. Everything else is from scratch. The "android" text is from dafont.com
A few ideas for future faces will need Google to make them a reality, though.
Here's another. I decided to work on the one from the Dev Request Watch Face thread. Credit goes to the guys who posted the pictures. The colors are much brighter/better in person. For some reason, the centers aren't exactly overlapping correctly. I think it is because I used _MinusZero_'s hour and minute hand png background file and tried to match them up according to that since I wasn't sure how high or low I was supposed to center those. Can anyone tell me or feel free to correct this? Thank you .

At this point in time, it's not possible with this app.
Although, I wouldn't be surprised if such features get implemented at some point.

This is the website specific link for that detailed text: http://cooltext.com/Logo-Design-Gunmetal. I used Batman Forever font.
You can color it from the website. I got rid of the Shadow Type and also unchecked Texture Fill. That way it uses color fill. I then edited the png image with Gimp/Photoshop (I used Gimp, you can use any software) after downloading it.
my attempt, though it's a work in progress.

[CHALLENGE] Person Of Interest Mesh Phone Theme...

I didn't know where to post this, so here goes...
I am a huge fan of the show "Person of Interest" and I've been looking for a theme for my phone that makes it look like the mesh phones from season 4. Unfortunately, I cannot find anything even remotely like that out there!
So here is my theme Challenge: use screenshots from season 4 of the show, starting with the episode "Panopticon" and create a homescreen series (3-5 screens) that are visually similar/identical to the ones seen in the show.
Good Luck!
Here are some images to get you started:

NOTE: Finding actual shots of the phones from the show is next to impossible, so you'll probably have to watch the episodes to get a better look. I've included what I can below... In addition, there are a dialer, and a general purpose screen, which could be used for a music player, or a weather forecast section.

The resource files I just grabbed from various places across the web, because they most resembled the icons and indicators from the show. And sorry, but I don't have a gdrive of the resources to share. The thumbnails of the device from the show I screencapped myself, so you're free to use them. I captured them from the episode "Panopticon"
Also, feel free to use the attached images, I grabbed them off royalty-free sites.
And Thank You very much for taking an interest! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks for the flattering, I've created that theme long ago and I kept it mostly for myself for over a year. It was really not that difficult to make, moslty is a background image, some Zooper Widgets and an icon text app that i downloaded for free from the PlayStore. To prove that I'm the creator of it I'll give it free to everyone here:

If you like it and you started using it, please share a photo of it to me via tweeter (@Fre4k4zoid) !
So I made a theme based on those pictures only to find out I can't post links here because I'm new (Always been a lurker). Made another theme and figured I'd take a shot at this since it's been sitting here for so damn long.

Go there to check it out. I Might add some more to it later. Right now the center button just opens the app drawer, but would like it to go to a second themer screen with some app categories. Maybe if people like it.
