I would like to root simply for wifi tethering and such, but not looking to add custom roms (this is a friend's phone)
So is it possible to root only and leave locked?
No. Must be unlocked for root.

If there is not, can someone please kindly point me to a guide that tells you how to root this phone. Thank you.
Yes, ask your operator for an unlock code.
Rooting, easiest way if you're on a ROM with 2.3.5 or less is to use the zergRush exploit.

Would it be pretty simple to root, unlock SIM and then unroot?
Will this work and will there be any disadvantages to it?

Try it and find out. It'd probably take a total of 5 minutes.
Hi
I am on 23.0.1.A.0.167 4.4.4
how do I root? This guide says I need recovery...http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-creating-rooted-update-package-t2933155
but I dont have it as I am not rooted..
How can I root 4.4.4? I dont have any recovery. Is it not possible to root 4.4.4 without recovery?
Do I need to downgrade to 4.4.2?

I appreciate the guidance, but I, like the OP, would like to know if there is another way of doing this w/o having to downgrade... no need to belittle the question, after all this is a forum, where by definitions questions are expected...
BTW, anybody has found a way to root 4.4.4 w/o downgrade? Thanks!

Despite all the negative feedback you've gotten by asking your question, YES there is a way. I found it and then created a new thread with the step-by-step.
Unfortunately, it does require unlocking bootloader and a few other tradeoffs such as losing X-reality and your warranty.
For full details: ROOT without downgrade

Hi, is it possible to unlock the bootloader and/or root the Kindle Fire HDX (7") on software version 4.5.3?
If it is possible, how would I go about doing it?
Thanks.

No. You need to downgrade to x.3.2.8 (which wipes all user data in the process) and then manually update to 4.5.2 for root.

Allright.
A Phone always comes with a locked bootloader so if you don't unlocked it yourself it is still locked.
To flash twrp you will need a unlocked bootloader and to unlock a bootloader you need rootacess.
I used the app rlashr to flash twrp and boot in recovery. Don't forget to type 'su' in a terminal before you use it (at the guide how to unlock a bootloader)
This guide tells you how to do everything:
(Follow these steps: root -> bootloader-> recovery(twrp))

If you look at the bootloader thread, you'll see exactly what version you can use to unlock etc.
My old phone is on 11.3.A10, unlocked and rooted.
I'd like to return this phone to bone stock. No need to keep any data.
In my research the process seems quite difficult and the boot images hard to find. Is an simple automated reset not possible?
What about sending it into oneplus?
Any help would be appreciated.

I wish I knew how without bricking my phone. I dont have the stock version of the rom im using, or can I just flash any stock rom on top? I uninstalled Magisk, and multiple Root checking apps now say I am not rooted (or not properly rooted). I hope thats enough.
Are you sure I need to unroot before doing the guide?
Yes, because you can't lock bootloader
