I recently got AT&T S2 and I noticed that "4G" icon is always there even when I'm connected to Wifi and my data is also being used. Is there a way to check which application is causing this and how can I get rid of this? I have to keep data turned off otherwise it just eats it up (even when connected to Wifi). I'm running stock 4.1.2.
The application Better Battery Stats, which you can get free on XDA, will tell you what is using your battery. You should review the Known identified battery drainers thread in the General forum.
When you are in a low signal area, with data turned on the phone will always be searching for a signal, which uses extra battery.

Has anyone managed to find a fix for the cell standby battery drain? As for the people not suffering from it, what rom and kernel are you using?

Thanks! I don't have the issue anymore with hypergalaxy!

has become much better since i flashed XXALF2 baseband and Franco r2 kernel. Standby (mobile data on) drop was around 4-5% per hour before, now its around 2.5% per hour
Stock LF2 no problem .

Cell standby drain cannot be confirmed by all people and is related to the 3G setup, antennas and location of your provider.
Here the network show a very bad case of hopping when switching to/from IDLE (fast dormancy) which drains the battery in no time.
I'm currently running Juicedefender Ultimate beta with AOSP helper which switches to 2G when the screen is off and no data is transferred. Only issue is that you'll loose connectivity twice (3G->2G and 2G->3G) for a very short time but other than that it seems to work fine and has solved my battery drain problem.
I've been used to switch back to 2G as soon as I don't need 3G/HSPA with my S1 as it's drain is even worse, so it's no big change for me

i conquer on this.
i do use now 2x battery saver, which does the same thing as the juicedefender, but even before that, my battery is very well managed. I would assume that the fact of cell standby being on the top of the list when you havent been using the phone for anything else is logical to be there. That IS what will be draining the battery. I would only see the problem on those handsets that this drain is not within acceptable limits, ie, whatever people have measured as normal drain for these circomstances.
I use juicedefender and with the latest update the battery drain is less than 2% an hour, im happy with that
Ive always found by the the biggest drain in standby being data always being on
That's not totally correct. Data is not what is actually draining your battery (at least it never was for me).
It's 3G not being in IDLE due to sending/receiving data, fast dormancy not being (properly) supported by the network or the network provider having a badly configured/balanced network.
If you switch to 2G, you'll find that your phone can run 2 days with data enabled if not heavily used.
Big exception seems to be Exchange's ActiveSync which is, when an account is configured (whether enabled or not) always top-of-the-list in BetterBatteryStats. But well... Exchange sucks anyway =)
I should have typed 3g data, this single act of letting the 3g connection be managed by juicedefender doubled my battery life
Yeh i have no idea for the technical reason but managing the 3g connection makes a big difference to me
hmm i am not aware of the actual network causing problems with the drain issue during 3g/2g signal. I only knew that when the signal is bad in general or you get no signal at all, then the phone is wasting too much energy trying to log on to a network itself.
i have the 3g swap on my 2x battery saver to rotate every 5min when the screen is off. Its the smallest amount of time you can apply. However i dont know if im the average phone user, as i see here lots of people doing a lot more things with their handsets during a day.
Not so sure about the 3G data thing but I'm only using the phone on wifi with data disabled and I still got the battery drain.

Wifi is another issue, especially when you have the 5Ghz band enabled and your phone hops between both. Try checking if your Wifi's channel is crowded and configuring the router to another less crowded one.
Then force your phone to use either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz band depending on your setup; drain should've gone away.

hi. ii dont know how to use better battery stats so im attaching pics also why my cell stand by is so hogh?? plz check my battrey stats and tell me is it fine?? and what to do with cell stand by?? i m using omega 5.2 rom and xlf2 kernel
After my last few posts I’ve been trying various things to reduce the cell standby battery drain on my Samsung Galaxy S3. Here is a list of the things I’ve tried.
1) Turning off wifi
2)Turning off packet data
3)Turning off sync
4)Turning off GPS
5)Flight mode
6)Monitoring background processes
7)Trying wifi off during sleep
8)Stopping all processes I don’t require (s-voice, chat, talk etc)
Yes some of them do improve the usage but none of them allow me to use my phone as it is intended. So other than continuing to try different configurations to see if I can get my head around the cause there isn’t much I can do.
It does seem like it is an issue with the phone not allowing the data connection to sleep correctly. As this is a large spread issue other than Samsung releasing a fix it maybe something a developer will be able to resolve.

all of them are always off except wifi which is also used when needed. anyhow wht about my battrey stats?
Its not drain. Its not actually using the % of battery it says it is. Its a reporting error.
Samsung have told the battery stats to report the radio uses 34mA of power. It uses this to make that into a 5 of total mA used over the period of time.
This appears to be massively wrong. The SGS2 was 2mA.
This is all answered in the various cell standby threads that the search function would have found for you.
Can I also point out that I wish I was getting 18 hours with over 50% battery left... :good:
Hei,
With mobile data on, the batter drains like anything.
The 3G coverage in my area is not so good and hence it switches continuously between H, 3G & 2G.
Can this be a reason?
If not this, what else can be a reason?
Is there any app that measures battey drain, mentioning the usage when data is on?
Am using Galaxy S3, GT-I9300.
It is now with Jellybean 4.1.2, which is not yet officially available here in India.

That is a very big battery drain. If it is constantly trying to get one signal or another it will drain the hell out of your battery.

i thought that you are able to check your battery usage under your settings
betterbatterystats would help you find any wakelocks. I have experienced a massive drain with low mobile data signal as well. It was actually more efficient to keep my wifi on all day rather than data. You should also check out juice defender. I mainly use it to automatically turn my wifi/data on and off.

He already stated what is draining the battery. No need to look any further then the signal fluctuations

Hei,
Is there any app which logs the mobile data connection signal strength?

Hello everyone.
Recently I acquired a Cube U9GTV tablet. When it comes to value for money, it's quite okay. However, I think that something drains its battery.
This is my first tablet so obviously I have no idea what to expect, but I have a Samsung I9000 running 4.2.2 and compared to it, tablet's battery is out of the league. My phone can stay up to 3 days being idle, taking no more than 1% per hour (of course without wifi/3g/gps, just cell signal). When it comes to my tablet, it can hardly last a day without charging, eating 2-4% of battery per hour. No wifi, no synchronization, no location access.
Maybe I just expect too much, but I some other users of this device report that their device can stay alive up to 3 days, while being completely idle. Mine cannot make it to a day.
Things I have done so far:
Clean ROM install, no Google account, no Synchronization, no Wifi, no BT
Deleted Phone.apk, TelephonyProvider.apk, MMS.apk -> the Mobile network signal bar in Battery status changed from red to yellow, battery drain decreased a bit
Disabled Media Scanning by Rescan Media Root
Stopped Google services running in the background (but didn't touch the cached ones)
My tablet enters Deep Sleep with no issues. But I noticed that the battery drop rate is not a constant, it varies and it seems that sometimes it drains the 1% per hour, but then something happens and hops to 4%/h.
The thing that concerns me is the Mobile network signal, which is completely useless cause my tablet is only a Wifi version, and I do not use external 3G modems.
I am unable to see battery usage in Settings, it just says it's unavailable. So I got myself Better Battery Stats, made a test and screenshotted results (see Attachments).
Why does it show No or Unknown Signal and No data connection at 100%?
If you have any suggestions or tips, share them with me please.
Thank you in advance.
Bumpety bump.

I am having some serious battery drain with my Galaxy S5 G900F.
The problem only occurs when i am connected to mobile data. When i'm on wifi, I get about 5 hours screen on time. But when mobile data is running (like when i'm not home) my phone drains like 1-2% percent without the screen even being on! and it gets really really hot even if its just in my pocket! I can probably get about 1-2 hours screen on time with data enabled, which is really bad. I'm wondering if there is any known wakelock hat only runs with mobile data running...
I really need help. Does anyone have any suggestions?
All devices in lollipop have this issue. The sulution is to get back at 4.4.4 ... its called "mobile radio active" ...aplications keep using data even after you close them. Example check fb viber chrome. Check connection time.it shows the exact time you where in data plan. So i really suggest you to get back at 4.4.4 like i did. Bcoze i use 4g/lte 80% of the time
