Shark Masq, new app & developer, feedback welcome. - Your Portfolio

Just finished creating my first app for Android called Shark Mask. It's a utility that lets you run DNSMasq on your phone to serve as a dns caching server, which lets you select DNS servers, block unwanted address and select a DNS server per address. I've tested that last part to use pandora outside of the States via Tunlr and it worked great. The works on phones and tablets and has binaries for DNSMasq to work on intel, mips and arm based devices. The only major requirement is the device be rooted.
Looking for other ideas for the app and places to promote it on. I've got it on Google Play so far and looking at placing it on Amazon as well.
Here's the Google Play Link, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.draekko.sharkmasq
Thanks in advance

Can you check if your tool works on lollipop or if you can make it work on lollipop? You would be the first to support lollipop for DNS modification I think. I would gladly pay the 5 bucks for that.

Hope you can make it as universal as possible. Id prefer maximum configurability instead of hard presets.

Mike, there has been an offer to dev this for free! unless you are going to make it yourself i suggest you either keep quiet or provide some constructive input. Something tells me a dev will be less likely to make something for a bunch of whinging aholes!

Yea but apparently they were not able to make a Linphone client that can run in background (like Viber for example).

Actually it can run in background if you are using a linphone.org account. If you use your own sip server, indeed it wont work in background (your server won't send push notifications).

This app seems crashy. I start it, it sits at the loading screen and proceeds to crash to the start screen. I don't think its my sip server. At least OctroTalk partially worked.

Strange. I have been using this app for 2 weeks with my own server and it has never crashed..
Unfortunately, the app won't receive any calls if running in the background. However, it's still my best option for voip in WP8.
This one works good for making SIP calls. Don't work in the background though but it's better than nothing.

[Q] New device, new binary?

Ok, I am looking at an online Android/iPhone app builder. They either offer the option to build one for free with unlimited downloads or you can pay yearly with different tiers for different download limits. The difference being that the free one has ads.
Anyways, when asked about just creating the app with their site, then hosting it on your own server and having everyone download it from there instead of paying the yearly fees, the site owner made this statement.
" my personal opinion in the long run you will pay more in this case because every time when apple releaes new iOS (like 6 now) or android has new phone (like samsung galaxy S 3 now) you will have to purchase new binary code from us that supports the latest updates/fixes."
Is this true? I don't see how each new device that comes out will require an update in your app.
Also, as stated, if you pay the yearly fee for the lowest amount of downloads, I assume they can only track downloads from Google Play or the Apple app store. I don't see any way they can track downloads from my own server hosting the .apk file. Anyone have any insight on this to correct me if I'm wrong?
For the record, I'm just looking to develop an app to play my Shoutcast Streaming audio station. I make no profit on the station, so have no capital to spend over $1K a year to have an Android and iPhone app. I mainly want to give it to my friends, and make it available to anyone who visits my Website. I really like the design that I did with this site, and am willing to pay something for it, just not worth $1K./year....
Anybody?
Have you tried installing the official Android Software Development Kit on your computer, and making the app yourself? You don't need to use an online service, and you choose exactly what gets compiled into the apk (ads, Google analytics, etc.).

Yes, it's kind of like Appinventor, all visual, just assemble the parts and stuff.
It's nice, just kinda pricey. I once posted the job on freelancer.com and got offers for about as much as this company is asking, and with freelancer I would have owned the app afterwards.
But, again, it's kinda hard to foot the bill when it's a non profit app.
Ok, I'm off to learn XML and Java.......
Oh, almost forgot.... the original questions...
" my personal opinion in the long run you will pay more in this case because every time when apple releaes new iOS (like 6 now) or android has new phone (like samsung galaxy S 3 now) you will have to purchase new binary code from us that supports the latest updates/fixes."

any ideas anyone?
I think he means every time Google releases an update to Android (updated OS, not new device). So, for example, you build your app to run on Jelly Bean. But when Key Lime Pie comes out, your app may not work as expected on those devices running KLP. Then, you'd have to pay them to recompile your app with updated binaries, or risk losing market share.
If your app is really simple and would run fine on Android 2.2 and up, then that "purchase new binary" thing is not applicable.
But, hell, if you're willing to learn XML & Java... go for it!

Old thread but this comes up in searches so here's some info.
You guy's can also make your own free VPN using Amazon ec2 instance free tier level. You need any credit card to sign up, and it's free for like 750hrs per month. If you don't have a card, then use bitcoins or Liberty Reserve/WMZ to buy a prepaid online visa. There's also plenty of CashU prepaid visa sites around http://www.prepaidvcard.com/cashu.php (note, i have no idea if site is legit or not.. do due diligence)
You can get Bitcoins for CashU using Okpay in Syria, or you can use localbitcoins.com and see if anybody local is selling/buying coins. https://localbitcoins.com/country/SY
If you want a secure wallet, set up 2 factor ID using blockchain.info and download android app
https://blockchain.info/wallet/android-app
http://aws.amazon.com/free/
https://github.com/sarfata/voodooprivacy - script to start PSec/L2TP VPN.
I run Tor bridges for free using amazon, that are using obfsproxy so users in blocked countries like China/Syria can access it.
There's also JonDoNym which is a mixmaster high security 'vpn' https://shop.anonymous-proxy-servers.net/bin/testcoupon?lang=en
It has a free trial if you want to try it out (and an Android app), at least good enough so you can access google play store and download whatever you need, like TextSecure or Redphone or just to encrypt communications. You can also edit Torrc file on phone to change number of Tor hops to just one instead of usual 3 if you wanted a free VPN with no anonymity
Lot's of vendors on the bitcoin wiki provide a free version of their VPN too https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade#Connectivity
http://www.securitykiss.com/
And of course there's Torrentfreak lists of VPN providers: http://torrentfreak.com/vpn-services-that-take-your-anonymity-seriously-2013-edition-130302/

[Q] How to change the 4G DNS servers on Verizon Galaxy S4 android 4.3

I need the OpenDNS Family Shield servers on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, version 4.3 and it is rooted. I looked for the typical Linux files and found none. There are paid apps on Google Play that do it, but why that when I'm a Linux user and I should be able to do it manually.
Remember that we common folk own the OS as it is open source and that means I have the right to change the DNS servers to the ones I want. Can anyone help me

I have a Verizon SCH-i545. /system/etc/resolv.conf most definitely exists. However, some Google searches lead me to wonder if that's actually used.
However, it can't actually hurt to try creating a /system/etc/resolv.conf to see if it gets used or not.
Tried SetDNS Pro from app store, No go

I tried SetDNS Pro from the app store. It correctly sets the DNS servers to the ones I want. However using # getprop shows 4 nameservers. My two that I want and two IPV6 nameservers. Android must be prefering the IPV6 servers over the IPV4 servers. It's possible that the IPV6 servers are simply faster and android is falling back to them. I now need a way to tell android to not set IPV6 servers in the DNS settings. I'm almost there!
k1mu I created a resolv.conf file and it's possible that is why my servers are now listed by # getprop and it may be that app had nothing to do with it. For the longest time SetDNS Pro worked. Verizon did something sneaky.

Adblockers for Pixel 3 Root and Non-root recommendations.

Any favorites recommended that work well with the pixel 3? Looking for a non-rooted option (for now).
Blokada is the best option I can find. It's available on f-droid as well as directly from their website. Totally free and very configurable. No root required as it's using the built-in VPN functionality.
WITH ROOT, the king is Adaway for sure. Simple, lightweight and works great.
WITHOUT ROOT I'd personally recommend DNS66. Blocks host names via DNS through Android's VPN interface. Without ROOT that's as good as it gets, or another app very similar like sirebral123 mentioned above. Both are available on F-droid site.
How about just using the Brave browser? Built on chromium, faster than chrome, doesn't track you around, and it has ad blocking built in. Available in the play store and I use it on my desktop as well.

That doesn't remove ads that appear in apps.
Blokada is working pretty well. Thanks. Any preferences on hosts or dns servers to select or add? I was able to download it here on xda labs app. Same version available in fdroid.
To people recommending VPN apps to block ads.... you realize you are then funneling all of your phone's network traffic through their servers, right? That would make me wildly uncomfortable.

Yeah but not every app has a "pay to make the ads go away" feature.
I'm rooted but prefer using Adguard. Being to disable ads for individual apps or website is a plus. Also, the app has a feature to allow the use of custom DNS which I have changed to use Cloudflare DNS. The VPN it creates is a local VPN, data DOES not get funneled to their site. i've been using adguard for over 2 years and paid lifetime. They do have a free trial
I can speak to both options. My phone and my wife's (Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 3) are both rooted and use AdAway. My sons' two phones (Huawei Mate SEs) and their tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8") are not rooted and each have a lifetime licence of AdGuard. I notice pretty much no difference in terms of what they block. I can't do an A/B spead comparison, but none of their devices seem adversely impacted by AdGuard. I very seriously considered going to the OP6T for my wife and I and going with AdGuard and no root since I am on T-Mobile and would have used the OG Pixel XL and Pixel both as trade-ins. My decision to stay with Google phones and root had nothing to do with ad blocking. In fact, the three devices with AdGuard are easy enough to root. The Mates are BL unlocked, and the S2 is pretty easy already. Any difference between AdGuard and AdAway is simply not worth giving them root access that they don't need.
How do the VPN ad-blockers (like AdGuard) affect battery life? I assume they use more than Adaway or other root methods.

Me too. Pi Hole is really good. Easy to install on a Raspberry Pi and it blocks ads and spyware on all devices connected to your network. Should you encounter a web site which doesn't work it is easy to suspend Pi Hole for a predertermined time, or until you re-enable it. A nice little project on very cheap hardware. You don't need the most expensive Raspberry Pi either - but I would recomment connecting it via ethernet so if anyone is interested make sure you buy a Pi with an ethernet socket.
