XT912 - CM 10.1.3
CM has the all-white message threads. Is there anyway to easily make small changes to it (such as have the threads simply be a different color for sent/received) or a theme that accomplishes this without being too dramtic and completely changing everything else on the phone?
I know I can install a third-party app, but I'd rather not go that route.
The dark theme doesn't work for me. I check it in settings and nothing. Is that working for you? That has been the case with several different nightly loads for me. CM 11 now.

What's the name of the .apk for the stock messaging app? I can't find it. I want to replace it with Textra.

I've flashed around a bit with different roms and as much as I enjoy touchwiz, I love the stock mms app that comes in AOKP/ vanilla android ICS and was just wondering if anyone had made any type of universal port for touchwiz roms that work just as smoothly? Saw a couple on the play store but they were total rubbish and full of bugs. gonna stay on AOKP in the meantime. Just curious if anyone else shared the thought

I did see that but I read the actual ability to receive and download MMS is broken in it. And I'm not knocking the Samsung mms, I just personally prefer the overall UI and feel of the stock 4.0 one. Sammys is great though.

Serendipity Rom has Samsung stock feel with aosp as well. I know he uses the mms /sms app in his Rom yer looking for.

That's the problem. Even if you get a compatible full asop mms, you have to keep the default samsung app. If you delete it, it will cause problems and FCs.

Thank you phalanx, I hadn't realized serendipity incorporated aosp apps into touchwiz. That does further spark my curiosity as to if It's possible to pull the AOSP mms app as a stand alone apk that I could keep and install no matter what ROM I switch to since serendipity makes it seem possible if I just disable the stock mms app.

you could theme the Samsung mms.apk to look like the AOSP mms.apk if nothing else, if all you're looking for is the aesthetics of the AOSP mms.apk
Good point, jrod ! That's actually what i like about it is how it looks. I really kinda despise the stock Samsung sms app

How do you do this? I'm the same way as jrod. Love what TouchWiz offers aside from the messaging app. Favour the look of stock ICS one instead. (Because I like the pictures inside the message thread)

Simple way would be to change your pngs in your drawable-hdpi folder and change some xmls as well, not really all that difficult once you get started
Edit: sorry, completely forgot that Samsung's has text bubbles, so it would get a little trickier, I'll look into it
Edit: So, I've been real busy with school and stuff, so I haven't been able to look at the apk. Also, I don't have a Samsung Mms.apk since I like the AOSP feel of ICS better and have been on AOKP since it came out. So in trying to find a Samsung Mms.apk in our dev threads, I found that Serendipity 9 has an AOSP Mms.apk in it and is TW-based. It also has a lot of other AOSP apks in it, and it looks nice and runs pretty well. (flashed it to see everything first-hand). That might be an answer

not familiar with the app, but is it a different app or just a different resolution?
I think it is a samsung "improved" version that I dont like. The PA version can have much smaller font sizes and just looks much cleaner.

Why not change the font size in the settings of the app?
Changing the font within the default email app or within the global phone settings has no effect on the default mail app.
I should also mention that I don't like the default mail app. What I am looking to do is replace it with the email app that is included with the PA ROM.
Thanks

The PA email app is just the AOSP email forced into phone or tablet mode (whichever you choose in PA settings).
Here is a link to a thread I found in the Apps Section. I haven't tried this method since I prefer the TW email:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086298
Due to the DPI this will load in phone mode. If you want to change the DPI of just the email app, try Xposed or something similar. The Xposed information can be found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065644
This worked for the most part. I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. I now have Jelly Beans and the AOSP email app. However, it is not giving me the 2 column view in portrait or landscape. Any ideas?
I used this app to change my DPI: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/custom-dpi-without-upsetting-google-play/

I downloaded handcent from the playstore YEARS ago and have never wanted, nor needed to change applications. It's VERY customizable in every way shape and form.
How about the stock Rogers 4.1.2 JB version? Here is a deodexed version.
+1 on Handcent mentioned above.

Is anyone interested in a dark stock messaging app? In settings...Display > Background Styles does indeed allow for a dark background for the individual messaging threads but the main panel remains white and bright as my screenshot demonstrates.
So does anyone out there know how to change the background of this panel or could you instruct me how to do this myself?
Thanks in advance.

If you can flash in recovery (not Safestrap) then you could try this and black it all out. Though this might work with Safestrap flashing on one of the rom slots. Not sure. But I know this works on Hyperdrive me7.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I am ME7 stock rooted with SS recovery and I did flash that to the stock ROM and it created FC's. Had to restore from my backup unfortunately.
Would like to stick with my stock ROM if possible. Just want to black out the stock messaging app.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks again

I think that might be what would prevent what you want. The stock rom is Odexed. I'm pretty sure Most of the edits for the message app require a deodexed rom. Which is why your getting the FC's. It's all personal preferences in the end but if you have Safestrap up and running you should consider Hyperdrive, beans, or bonestock. All are excellent. And you can stay very close to stock. But maybe still have dark messaging.

There's probably a thread for this somewhere but I haven't been able to find it. I am looking to add nexus style on screen softbuttons to my razr. I am running paranoid android 4.2 beta pa_spyder-userdebugKVT49L. Is there a universal way of doing this though an app or a device specific mod?

You mean the navigation bar. I think its already present in PA Roms. You need to enable it in settings.
I've searched both google and this form as well as dug though my settings. I can't find it. Is there something in the build prop that could be edited?

Have you checked out pie control? Or checked to see if your ROM supports it? Don't mean to put words in neo.ank mouth but, it might be what he is talking about.
Many ROM's support it.
One thing you have to remember is that you are dealing with a device that still has hardware buttons
Slim kat has an option for it but I had a lot of issues with slim. I've always preferred asop ROMs but I'd like the full google experience. Pie control is OK but I'd prefer something persistent.

Hard buttons are persistent..... I mean, with a launcher like Nova or Apex.. something to that effect, and the right .png files you could get the same effect modifying your dock but really, all you will be doing is taking up screen real estate.
