There's been some discussion about MHL adapters recently so I thought I'd share the one I got since it works well and is affordable. It's a VicTsing MHL 2.0 Micro usb to HDMI adapter I got off of amazon for $10 shipped.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ENETITI/ref=cm_cr_mts_prod_img
http://youtu.be/GSetj1ehv5Q
It's the 11-pin version so it supports the Note 3. I had some screen cropping issues at first (not shown in video), but alittle tweaking of the TV settings fixed this. Also you may notice that it disconnected while I initially connected it, but that was because I wasn't pushing it in very much (user error). I've played real racing (tilt steering) without disconnection problems.

Ya it looks the same. Odd that it isn't free shipping for you on Amazon, says free for me.
The amazon listing he provides shows free shipping to me. it is from the seller, not Amazon.
Mine stopped working. It only works now when you plug it in with a power source.

The Apple charger is only 1200mA when used with an Apple device. It's probably outputting 450 or 500mA (USB standard) because it doesn't recognize the charge capabilities of the connected device. Unfortunately, they only support proprietary signaling for Apple device charging capabilities. You should have known considering how notorious Apple is for such things! Granted, a standardized way for microUSB chargers didn't exist when they first needed it, but I doubt they ever added support in any of the revisions. FWIW, the HP TouchPad uses proprietary signaling as well.
I wonder if the MHL adapter is using 100-150mA or if the charger outputs even less than 450mA for non-Apple devices. Apple was notorious for doing just that on Macs back when they wanted to push their IEEE 1394 Firewire iSight camera and it continues today where Macs can charge an iPad but not a 10" Android tablet.

Amazon does give free 2 day shipping when you have Amazon Prime. That was the main reason I signed up for Prime. I buy stuff on amazon very frequently so it made sense:good:

Ya I remember reading about it but didn't know if the propriety thing was still an issue, I use that Apple adapter as my travel charger for my n3 and still pull 1200mA at least according to galaxy charge current.

Just heard back from customer service. They say that it is supposed to work with and cannot be used without a power supply. I told them that it worked without a power supply and even showed them the video. They insisted that the unit I received wasn't defective. I'll be returning this and I'm picking up the Samsung one instead.

The one I received does not work at all, even with the power connected. I'm not sure if I should try and get a replacement or just get a refund since they state it DOES NOT work without power, even though the video shows that it can.

Didn't know that proprietary thing was still an issue, figured it'd be the same since I do get 1200mah (according to galaxy charging current) charging from it using the N3. I'll grab my roommates s2 charger when I get a chance and see if it makes a difference.

Sorry to hear that guys, guess it's a really inconsistent product. I've had a good experience using it, but I wouldn't have recommended it knowing it had could have such issues.Customer service for me was quick to replace my first one which didn't charge but worked without a power adapter. Also on the product description it says that it works without a power adapter for some phones "Supports use without connecting the charger with some smartphones." so maybe you could use that as an argument if you didn't decide to just return it.
I tried the Apple charger and I get 1200mA too. I guess they did add standard signaling for device charge capabilities. Once I even measured 1800mA (immediately went back down to 1200mA)!
They are sending me a new one. Hope this one works like the one in the video :fingers-crossed:
I just received the replacement and it still needs power to function. I'll be getting my $10 back and grab me the Samsung one. I heard theirs didn't need a power supply.

100% confirmed that the Official Samsung MHL cable works without an extra power cord.
There's a lot of these circling around eBay. Made to look like Samsung. Even has the Samsung logo and Samsung box. But just like previous mhl it still requires power. Complained to the seller and maybe a few others dud as well so they've taken it off their site. Maybe due to copyright thing as well.
In my review it, it's not a bad unit but some TVs it will only out put 720p but less stutter. At home on my Samsung it outputs at 1080p but stutters.
I wonder how well the OEM version handles 1080p. And I do like that OEM ones do not require power.

I also have a mhl adapter from pny but I did not connect power to the adapter and the external display worked. Was your display on the phone and tv laggy or smooth after you connected the adapter? Were your videos in sync with the image produced on the phone itself?
MHL adapter kit
The MHL adapter for HTC DNA from iBOLT features a 2 meter (6ft) extension cable so you can stand in front of the TV and play Angry Bird, racing or whatever other games you prefer. With licensed MHL technology it is a real 30 frames per second so there's no delay and the sound quality is great when playing even advanced games. My kids love MHL, they only want to watch Netflix kids programs now without painful commercial interruptions.
The only thing to be aware of with Android MHL is that some sites block the HDMI port out. Two examples are Hulu+ and HBO (they don't block it from iOS). Most others, like Netflix and almost all web streaming sites works perfect. Google Play has an amazing picture quality on the newer videos when you rent them, absolutely clear 1080p resolution if you have enough WiFi bandwidth. The best use of MHL is to show photos and videos though on the big screen TV. The quality with good adapter is near perfect and the phone is charging while you are doing it too.
The "cyber Monday" price for an iBOLT complete MHL adapter kit with 6ft HDMI cable and the required 1 amp microUSB wall charger is only $24.95. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll check back daily here. Here's a YouTube video showing the technology and the kit I was referring to. The Samsung OEM has a very good reputation if you don't like this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmaKIJ90Xz4&feature=plcp
The image and everything was in sync... Sounds were good I watched a little but of transformers... The picture looked like crap but that is because it's compressed over Google play... You tube looked great

I bought one and it works well, but the framerate seems a little slower. It is usable, but certain apps seem to not allow being shown via the HDMI such as NFL Mobile and Hulu Plus.
The Samsung adapter for GSIII works on the DNA.
I have experienced issues with hardware accelerated subtitles using the MHL cable. Viki shows video but no words and that is kind of useless for me. Fortunately downloaded subtitles play in MXplayer with the software subtitle option.

I think I know the answer to this question but I will ask anyway...lol
Is there any MHL to HDMI adapter cables that do NOT need an external power source for the adapter? Seems kinda crappy to have to plug power into the adapter,
If so, a link to one would be greatly appreciated
Just put my order in to upgrade from my Thunderbolt to the DNA. Figure I will want to get a wireless charging pad, the MHL to HDMI adapter, and a micro USB to USB to mount external storgae.
As an aside...I cannot believe no company has actually created a micro USB to Micro SD adpater cable! I saw some links to threads here where people actually built their own...pretty cool...but hard to believe no company has stepped up for this. With the form factor fo phones moving more towards the DNA, One X, etc, I would think those would sell like hotckaes!
While browsing this thread I came to wonder about the DNA's mirroring. So when the right cable is connected, mirroring becomes available? Makes me wonder if a cable exists that might be micros USB on one side and (don't laugh) RCA on the other. My car's head unit had an add-on that allows RCA video inputs to display on the nav screen. It worked back when I used an iPad occassionally.

Hi everyone,
I got a good few hours with the Galaxy Note 3 over the weekend, tried out a bunch of stuff and can answer a lot of the questions people have here in relation to what sorts of connectivity work and which don't (the USB 3.0 has people wondering whether their existing stuff will work).
A few findings of mine from the weekend:
External drives work, but unfortunately NTFS formatted drives still don't work on stock ROMs. It had the power to spin up a 1TB Seagate drive! Unfortunately the drive was NTFS formatted so couldn't do more to see how well it was working, but definitely was powered with a solid indicator light. Promising.
The Smart Dock works with the Note 3
The S3/Note 2 MHL adapters definitely work
The Samsung MHL 2.0 adapter works without needing a charging input plugged in and IS outputting at 60Hz
USB audio working, I tried several DACs. The ones that worked were the HiFimeDIY, Tiny-M, HeadAmp Pico. Unfortunately Apex Glacier did not work (did not work on the S4 either).
USB keyboards/mice working as they did with the older Samsungs
PS3 controller working over USB OTG
Ditto for the Xbox 360 for Microsoft controller (which required an app on older Samsungs in order to work)
Logitech F310 controller works too
Ditto the Logitech F710
It also worked with a cheapie gamepad from Ebay (like $6), although button mappings seemed limited and did not have time to try it in emulators etc to see whether all could be mapped.
BT keyboard and mouse working, as expected
IR blaster via the inbuilt app works great with my LG TV
MHL and USB OTG do not work together using the Samsung MHL 2.0 adapter
Moga Pro gamepad working well
Tried several ethernet adapters, none work.
Unfortunately the one I had did not have the USB 3.0 cable/charger, so could not benchmark read/write speeds or charging speeds using that connectivity.

This arrived for me this week, finally got around to testing it tonight and can confirm it works well, which is a great result for the $11USD it cost me from Ebay (including shipping). Considering it basically does everything the Samsung Smart Dock does I'm well pleased.
Few notes:
Yes, it is MHL 1.0 - I kind of expect them to revise these to MHL 2.0 before Samsung actually get around to releasing an updated dock.
USB OTG functions will not work without a 2A Samsung charger connected apparently, I was initially using a cheap charger that happened to be in the multi-board the TV was plugged into and was disappointed when nothing would work. Got of my lazy @$$ and grabbed my Samsung charger and all working. Plugged in my externally powered USB hub and then a Logitech K400 keyboard/mouse combo, card reader with a 16GB full-sized SD card in it and also a Logitech F710 controller. Happily watched some video from the card and then played some Dead Trigger 2 on the HDTV with the controller.
Thanks as always.
I am a bit sad that Samsung did not update the smart dock to MHL 2.0, in my opinion 60Hz is so much better. So for now, there is no option for simultaneous USB OG and MHL 2.0.
Oh and I am seriously tempted by Moga Pro, but it is so damn expensive to import and game support make it even more difficult to buy. I am hoping Google will follow Apple and announce some sort of API for game controllers.
i am also said we still can not do MHL with a USB keyboard+mouse and video out.
That could turn it into a portable laptop. Which is why I want a Note anyway. It's big. Ideally I'd also like it if the Flipcover had a built in bluetooth keyboard with hardware keys or perhaps someone made a QWERTY slider case for it. Yes I know it is big but yes it is what I ideally want.
How cool would it be to set your Note down, plug in keyboard, mouse, and to a monitor? Bam. Get to work (or surfing). Heck I'd probably stop using my laptop for a lot of things! Get a mini-USB hub for like 5 bucks and the possibilities are endless. Would be really cool if someone set up an easy dual-boot Linux and Android ROM too or maybe that is around. But the key is having video AND keyboard/mouse at the same time. I think over time Samsung will add this, though. They deliver on cool features like this. I bet it would be possible to add in an update of software to the Note 3??? USB 3 has so much bandwidth shouldn't it be possible?
Thank you very much!! I have been looking for someone to post this type of info. Has anyone seen anything that points to a OTG cable that supports 3.0 standards?
Thanks a lot. Happy to hear that smart dock works with it. With 2.3Ghz quad core, it definitely will replace my desktop.

I want this too. Something that you can hold without having to prop up the phone/screen. Slider would be ideal. I don't care if it adds a bit of bulk...just not as much as the one I tried for the S4. It was horrible, and didn't work well anyway. I'd love to see a really good solution put out for this.

The mhl adapter for the note 1 is different (pin count) than that of the note 2. The galaxy note 2 + s3 used a newer type of mhl. When searching look for mhl adapters that work for the galaxy s3 and note 2.

I got the Smart Dock Multimedia Hub since I've read that some of the aftermarket and knockoffs occasionally fry itself or the phone. I wasn't interested in risking it so I picked one up for $55 with my VZW account that I have suspended lines with grandfathered data I keep meaning to sell.
Like OP has listed it works. I does sit off center due to the USB 2.0 of the 3.0 portion not in the middle. Video runs fine with a slight delay over HDMI. One of the big things I wanted to do was emulated games. I have Animaonline SNES, SNESDroid, and Snes9x EX+ installed. While using a wired PS3 controller there is an obvious input lag on all three emulators. Snes9x EX+ went half speed and was unplayable. The other two ran, but still had an input lag. I was barely able to make it past the first course in F-Zero bouncing around like a noob and Mario World was a joke. Playing these with just an OTG cable works great and I've already beaten a couple of my old favorites; playing through Secret of Mana right now.
I can't imagine trying to use this with a keyboard and mouse and using a RDP client for some remote administration. I wonder if the Note 2 and S4 exhibit the same lag; I'll try and test if I get a chance. Frankly I'm a bit disappointed and think that MHL (for video) and OTG need to be separate on the Note 3 until lag is sorted out. It would be a real shame if the lag is there on the Note 2 and S4, which means no one knows about it or they don't care to fix it. I do look forward to the day when the phone is also the full on computer that just needs a dock or be near ones desk. I'll see if VZW will take it back after my vacation.

Buy it from the Samsung store, that's pretty much the only way right now to ensure you get the genuine article. It's $39.99 in the US but while placing the order I registered my phone with them, then used the 50% off coupon they mailed me for registering to get it for $19.99 plus shipping.
Sure beats playing Russian roulette on Amazon.

First of all, lemme say that I got mine last night and I love it!!!
I was just sitting here pondering what I would use my 50% off coupon for and after seeing your post, I think I'll do the same.
As a bit of an unrelated sidenote, I was just looking at the YouTube channel of a "reputable" reviewer who puts out weekly ratings of the top 5 phones as voted by consumers and then another list as voted by "experts".
As of this week, the iPhone 5s is atop the experts list and in 2nd place on the consumer list.
In what alternative world are the minuscule changes made to the 5, anywhere near substantial enough to rate it above the Note 3???
It boggles my mind how blindly devoted the Apple Nation truly are...
They're exactly like the guys in the band playing on the deck of the Titanic...the friggin' ship is damn near vertical, but the band plays on.
Go figure...
Rant completed...I now return you to your previously scheduled programming.

Ok but what about a regular MHL adapter would we need the 5 to 11 pin adapter I was looking at the http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EAM863M/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1381591510&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70.

Has anyone gotten their M8 to connect to a TV or monitor using a mhl adapter or cable? Ive tried two so far and have gotten little success. If so what are you using? do i need to find a certain brand of cable or adapter to mirror my One M8 on my TV screen?
the two I used were an auvio mhl adapter which i got to work mabey 10% of the time with a ton of unplugging and reconecting cables, I returned that one for a radioshack mhl to hdmi cable which i couldnt get to mirror at all but when plugged into the phone it allowed the phone to go into landscape but no video

I can confirm that the Samsung one works perfectly fine. I think I bought it for the galaxy S3. Here is a pic.

I've had decent luck with the 'Rocketfish' MHL adapters that are available at BestBuy. I'll have it work fine for a while and then all of a sudden I'll loose video but keep audio. I've since ordered a MHL adapter of Monoprice that had good reviews. I'll update if I get anywhere.

Samsung S3 uses a 12 pin connection (I also bought it) and that's not the one, from looking at the photo. Are you sure that's not the adapter from the S2 or something?
I still haven't found any info regarding if the HTC One m8 uses mhl 2.0 or 1.0
Any news regarding this matter?

it might be an S2, that is why I post a pic with the model number so people can search by it.
If you have an AV receiver that supports MHL, the best thing to use is a passive MHL cable. Fortunately my Onkyo TX-NR5010 supports MHL & it works perfectly using this Pipeline passive MHL cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EZ2KL76/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have never lost video or audio with it. *Please Note: If you do NOT have a receiver or a TV that supports MHL natively, then this will not work for you. It is a PASSIVE cable that transmits the raw MHL signal to the receiver or TV for native processing/decoding. If you DO have a TV or receiver that supports MHL though, then this is the way to go. Those little adapters will never match the reliability & quality of native decoding via an AVR or high-end TV.
I am also having trouble getting mhl adapter to work with my HTC One_M8. Tried two different ones already. The mhl symbol appears on the phone but no image on the TV. Anyone has any tips? I'm getting desperate
Thanks
MHL Works on HTC One (M8)
I bought 2 cheap cords on Amazon which took about 2 weeks to get to me because they came from China. In the beginning the order I plugged in the cords mattered. However, now I just plug them in, in any order and they work just fine. I am sorry you paid top dollar at radio shack for the cord. I almost did too. Here is a link to the one I bought. I was thinking about buying a few more to give to friends. I paid $3.78 with shipping each. Now they are even cheaper. They only utilize MHL 1.0 technology and our phone has 3.0 technology. Here is the link to the one I am currently using on a daily basis to watch movies I have downloaded in HD on my TV from my phone.
New user, so it won't let me post the link but add (amazon dot com forward slash) to the following : eForCity®-Compatible-Micro-HDMI-Adapter/dp/B00827EGG2/ref=pd_rhf_se_s_qp_10_0FRY?ie=UTF8&refRID=05W5ENJ6B2ZNZ2A6AR2Y
This is exactly the same one I found knocking around my house. Same serial number and everything it didn't work at first but after a few tries different hdmi ports and a cleaning of the ports got the adapter working. Took a bit of time to get connected but stuck with it and now I can view my phone on my TV to the post above showing the Samsung adapter

Our phone dosent use mhl 3.0. It uses 1.0
And I quit trying to make it work, after 4 different adapters, 2 HDMI cables and 2 TVs I just gave up
A Generic MHL HDMI adapter will work.

I've been using a general MHL adapter that came with the 5 to11 pin Galaxy add-on (which I don't use of course for my HTC). This has worked flawlessly for me no problem for years now. Make sure you have a good power source, the only problems I have had is my phone will say "slow charging", and the Media Device output will not work. Mine is pretty old, over a year & a half I've been using it, so I'm looking for a new one. They have one with a remote which is what led me to the review on here (a diff thread). However, they have the same one I have on Amazon or Walmart for a few bucks, you shouldn't have a problem. I'll add the links below...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00KPXI4S2/ref=olp_twister_child?ie=UTF8&mv_color_name=1
http://www.tvc-mall.com/details/MHL...TV-Adpater-Cable-with-Remote-Control-PCA-380/
Also, I'm on this thread beaise I plan to unlock & root my phone and am concerned that once I do that an adapter will no longer work Any suggestions or experience with this would be appreciated? Thx:fingers-crossed:
M8 mhl cable
I have the m8. I bought a Skiva mhl cable from Amazon. I believe it's hd-x2 cable. Works flawlessly only problem ive encountered is it will not play in 5.1 surround. It only transmits a 2.0 audio feed. Which I don't understand. If I use like all cast to cast the stream to my Xbox it transmits in 5.1. So if anyone knows how to get the cable to do 5.1 let me know.
Finally got my hands on the Magtron's Magnector X cable and adapter for the Z3. As promised, I would do a side-to-side comparison on these. Here we go!
The two boxes. It is interesting how the boxes say "for the Z1 and Ultra", but I am guessing they all have the same magnetic connections (?).

It is nice to see MADE IN KOREA instead of MADE IN CHINA, although I hope it is true.
Taking out of its plastic box, it's all plain and simple, no text labels anywhere.
Cable and adapter. Each came in a white pouch.
Cable.
Adapter.
Cable + adapter (NSFW!!! ).
Adapter mounted on the side of the Z3. The curve on the mounting area of the adapter makes it flow with the phone. So nice!
Close look of the adapter to show the gap. Hopefully this will help those decide on which case to buy.
Cable mounted on the side of the Z3. A close look to show the gap.
Photos showing the strong magnets. They are strong, even at 45deg tilt.
All I have to say is that these are very strong magnets! Fitment is very snug and easy on both. I would highly recommend this product to those looking for magnetic chargers to save you from opening or closing those USB flaps. The big deciding factors will depend on preferences such as portability and cases you buy for the phone.
Feel free to check out my Xperia Z3 battery life and recharge experiments thread as well for battery recharge and benchmarks.
Hope you find this helpful!
Can you please install Current Widget (free on Play Store) and report back
what charging current both items give compared to the regular charger
from shop set?
Thanks in advance!

I'm getting variable readings for mA in Current Widget. It appears to be constant around 1089mA. This is charging with the Magnector cable and Sony charger from the outlet.
Is there a good app I can use to log timestamps, battery percentage, and current (mA)?
hanime,
Current Widget can log to file timestamp, mA, %, V and centigrades.
Can you compare values from Magnetor with regular Sony charger?
thanks!
Sure! I'll try the logs on my new Z3 (it's currently getting exchanged due to a defective camera unit), or I can try it on my GF's Z3 if she ever gets it fully drained.
I'll update this thread when it's done.
this is a great post. was considering the magtron but guess this post have convinced me to get one :good:
I got one and have to admit it is a must have.

Current Widget app is not doing it for me. Can't get it to log when I checked the log box. The notification icon shows "no data" when I charged from 1-100%. Half of the time, I don't even know if the Current Widget is working because when I open the app, it goes into the configuration screen.

Hi, do you have the Xperia Z3 Dual (D6633)? I have that one and my camera unit was also defective. I ordered from GSM Nation and live in the US. Where did you buy yours and who is exchanging it? I wonder if I am out of luck due to me being in the US and this being an international phone.
Thanks in advance.
@wutsup, this thread is about Magnector products - stop off-topic posts. Thanks.
Anyone use these for more than a week or two? I have heard reports of them failing, just want to make sure.

To answer your question, mine is a D6603. I bought it from an eBay seller techno.trading.house. Very good service and friendly, as they advertised hassle-free returns/exchanges. I just hope the new one coming my way is not another defective piece. It seems to be a hit and miss with this phone, any model (rolls eyes at Sony QA). I would ask GSM Nation about their exchange policy.
Can you confirm if you connect this magnetic charger to the phone first and then connect it to the plug socket afterwards, does the phone detect the charger?
Thanks, Hanime. I will wait and see how it works out for you.

I can confirm that putting the magnetic charger to the phone first, then connect it to the plug socket afterwards does not charge. It does not detect it. I can see this might be a bad thing when the power goes out and comes back in the middle of the night or similar case scenario. Interesting indeed.

I don't know as I don't use a case. However, if the case supports the holes for the magnetic port, and its thickness can give clearance, it should work just fine. Please refer to the mounted photos to see whether it clears.

About a month ago I was browsing a website called "dudeiwantthat.com" that has all sorts of random cool stuff that I've often never heard of (I love that site). And I came across a reversible Micro-USB adapter, I believe the brand then was called McFlip, or something similar. I checked out and it didn't explain much, like whether it supported Quickcharge or anything like that. I was in the middle of something and kinda forgot about it. A couple days ago it popped back into my head and I asked a handful of friends if they've ever seen anything like that and they were all shocked to hear it existed. So I just googled the term to see if there were any others that ARE QuickCharge and found this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Cambond-Reversible-Charging-Braided-Connecting/dp/B00V3FRZPE
braided cable, QuickCharge, reversible Micro-USB adapter. I'll be picking up a few myself. But figured I'd let everybody else know in case some of you think it's as cool as I do. After having an S5 for so long, and what a pain it was just to plug that thing in, finding out there's a cable that i don't even need to worry about being upside down. And the pricing isn't bad for what looks like a durable cable that will be a cinch to use tired, in the dark, whatever. I plan to do a review for it when I get it. But if someone already has one, or gets one before me, please let me know how it is. IMO every micro-USB cable made now should be like this. Seems like common sense to me
I backed the MicFlip on Indegogo, and 1000 years later once I received the product, I was pretty disappointed. It was super finicky, only working if wiggled in my Nexus 6, and won't work in my s7 at all. Obviously other brands will vary, but that left a bad taste in my mouth for them.

sorry about that. I know the McFlip was the micro side, but aparently it was a good concept with **** execution. But it sounds like there are some companies making quality ones with the reversible micro plug. Though it's almost too ironic that they finally come up with something like that just in time for the death of Micro USB. And USB-A as a whole for that matter

Quick charge has nothing at all to do with the cable. It's negotiated between the phone and the charger. Any Micro USB cable will work.

It isn't possible to have a reversible micro USB plug. The female receptor is shape dependent, unlike the full sized USB connector which is non-shape dependent..

Not at all. The head rotates. It can still ONLY be inserted in one (and only one) orientation. It's the same thing as turning the cable upside down. You would simply be rotating by the head instead of the cable. If you try to insert the male micro USB head into the female receptor, it still will only work if it is turned the right way.
In contrast, the full sized USB head (in this case) can be inserted either way, without rotation.
The result is still that the micro USB connector side is still not reversible.

I have three of the McFlip cables. They all work fine. What I'm waiting on is one with a detachable magnetic tip. Hoping my ZNaps gets shipped soon!
I have the blitzwolf cable, and all I can say is WOW. I have had a lot micro usb cables, but never before such an awesome quality. The cable itself is so heavy and full of copper, you can bend it and then it stays that way. WOW.
The connectors, on both ends are reversible and of Mega high quality. not super-high, but mega-high. period
