[Q] efs backup/restore and safe rom change - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I know that i have to backup my EFS in order to change ROM's (I already have it backed up), but my question is, will efs folder be corrupt if i change only 4.1.2 ROM's, or is it just due to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.x.x.
I had my phone service twice because my efs was corrupt, and yes, i have restored my valid and good efs, when the signal was working, but it didn't help.
So I am just asking will i break my efs with changing from for ex. stock 4.1.2 to some custom 4.1.2 rom?
Also, I can't backup my efs via EFS professional, it cannot create the final step creating .tar file, I did efs backup with k-tool but when i restored my valid efs it was also no signal problem. Everything went good with backing up to PC.
Yes, I read other threads, but I am just asking for a direct opinion.
Thx in front.

Direct opinion is read the efs 'know this stuff' sticky -tells you everything you need to know.

Ok, so, if I am on XXEMG4 firmware i must stick to MG based basebands/firmwares in order for my efs to work, right?

XXEMG4 or later, any baseband/firmware after this will work with efs v2

So in order to flash my preferite modem without problem I have to
-restore backup of efs before the new format
-flash my preferite modem
Right?
From universe with my gs3
Is your efs in new format? Mg4 is but mg5 is older changelog so not sure that it changes format

Now I'm on mg5 but I have also flashed before mg4.
How we can check the format?
From universe with my gs3
If you went from mg4 to mg5 without restoring efs, it should be same format for both. So yes, flash your modem of choice and restore pre mg4 efs backup

This is from the Omega thread OP..
1. Make sure to make and keep in a safe place an efs backup - nadroid backup - titanium backup - etc, in case you ever need to restore!
2. With the new firmware from Samsung for the S3 they have changed some security code that will disable the use of older modems, the new update changes the EFS partition which makes it impossible for an older modem being use without upsetting your IMEI (No Phone Signal), please make sure you do have a backup of your EFS in a safe place before you flash to the latest Omega ROM.
This is what Samsung has done, and it seems that its being done to all the new Modems on all the high end devices.
More info
3. Flash with No Full Wipe only from v43.x and previous Omega 4.1.2 versions - if

[Q] efs and imei - all roms?

Hi
Just wondered about this efs and imei trouble, does this concern all newer (or older) roms? I've got ultimarom v12 on my international s3 going good, but wonder about changing to the newest ultimarom but then I read about problems with imei.
Is this something new you have to do with all roms now?
Frode
EFS and IMEI problems since day one especially for noobs who have not read the basic faqs and guides and have no EFS backup .
Current released firmware Samsung have changed the EFS Folder .

I have rooted and installed ultimarom without any problems. was I just lucky then? Do you have to take backup of efs folder every time? It's not good enough with backup of rom when you flash a new rom?

As written in the guides, you should make a backup of your efs at the very beginning one time and keep it somewhere safe. Without imei and efs backup otherwise you have to go back to Samsung...

I wanted to try Revolutionary S5 V3 Rom

Im coming from 4.1.2 stock rom XXEMA2. This is my first time moving into 4.3. I heard of the issues "no signal" or "IMEI Corrupted" and "sim card not detected". In my case, can someone provide me the instructions in installing your amazing rom safely? Thanks!
Follow the installation guide by your rom chef, backup your efs first.
Problems with imei relate to damage caused to the efs folder, only you know the history of your phone so it's a chance you must decide.

Most likely is your efs folder is corrupt and cannot be updated to v2. Take it to a repair centre.
