Android versions 4 and below had no support for emojis. Jelly Bean came along with some improved support using font like smileys which were completely indecipherable on a small screen phone.
Now, with Kitkat, Google has incorporated some better support for smileys that are, for the first time, actually usable.
However, what I feel is that the Whatsapp smileys are really better looking as compared to the Kitkat ones. The Whatsapp smileys have, sort of, become the default form of smileys for the respective ones. And the google smileys, be it JB or KK ones, look more like a side-variant to the default-whatsapp ones.
So what I want ask is whether is it possible to replace the KK smileys with whatsapp looking like ones. I believe it must be possible because both KK and whatsapp smileys are image ones. So if the image files of KK smileys are replaced with correclty resized whatsapp smileys, wouldn't it be possible to achieve it?
Further, some skilled and interested dev may make a CWM flashable zip out of it, that may be used with many devices. Obviously, that would be possible, only if the images in most ROMs are stored in some standard place and in a standard resolution, etc.
I am no developer and may be completely wrong. Any person knowledgeable enough to shed some light on my query as to whether it is actually possible?
Here, now that I've asked it... Please reply and let my itch go

Well, as a good XDA user, I did start with a search. But could not find any relevant result.
Going forward, the link you gave is of a Kitkat keyboard, backported to ICS. However, what I want is completely diffrerent.
Let me attempt to explain it in another manner.
See the screenshot below..
All across the Kitkat ROM, emojis would appear as (2). Be it stock messaging app, notification bar etc.
I want them to be replaced by images in (1)
I want it the other way around that the ugly Whatsapp emoticons get replaced by the awesome Google ones.

We're two, man! I love KK emoticons and looking for a way to replace whatsapp ones with those
It should not be difficult but will take some time.
1. Locate where the system emojis are. You can open the APKs as you would with ZIP files. I expect to find them in the framework.
2. Copy the system APK in which the emojis are to your computer.
3. Download Whatsapp.apk and extract the emojis from it.
4. Compare the resolution of whatsapp emojis to the ones in the system. Modify the ones from whatsapp and make sure they are similar to the system.
5. Rename whatsapp emojis so that they have the same name as their corresponding ones in the system apk .
6. Overwrite the ones in the system with the ones from whatsapp.
7. Flash the modified APK using an Update Flashable ZIP.
But a better way would be using Xposed but I'm no dev and don't know how to create Xposed Modules.
Good Luck

Ignore my earlier answer. It turned out that the emojis are stored in a new font of a new format. Check out:

You can overwrite the emojis file with the one in that thread

I'm running Shirshir's ICS ROM, but he hasn't made any changes for quite some time and I have no idea if he's supporting it any longer, so that's why I'm posting this here. The rom uses AOSP gallery and a themed mms.apk, both of which I like, but in this tweaked mms.apk Shirshir removed the ability to add pictures to a text message using the gallery, so you can only add pictures and videos that you take at the time. That is, you can't add ones already taken unless you go through the gallery app itself, and even then you can only send one at a time, you can't add multiple like you could on stock. So my question is, can anyone re-add this ability? Or point me towards how I might do it myself, as I'm very noobish?
P.S. If you happen to make one, I'd also like a switch of the attachment and send buttons in messaging while you're at it XD
Thanks for any help in advance.

Hey!
I know about this problem... I was actually going back to the old gallery to fix this and the lockscreen wallpaper problem. That's the only easy way short of decompiling and fixing the code inside the individual apps... which is useless since I plan to change my ROM to a completely new base eventually.. That's what I've been working on lol.
So, you can't really fix it and keep the stock gallery app. If you want, I can upload the original gallery for you to install, and that should fix everything.
I will like first than any other thing to apologize if you are reading this and you thought finaly a multi DPI stock dialer aviable, sorry i dont have it. I needed a title to guet some readers to see it. Second for my really bad speling.
This post has been created whit one goal:
¡¡¡¡¡MULTI DPI STOCK SAMSUNG DIALER!!!!!
I have scouted xda forums for weeks to guet one, but this mod just... DOES NOT EXIST.
I have seen this request on replies, new threats, but no one single developer has responded to this call.
If YOU reader support this threat, i will sent a pm to your inbox once i guet one.
Now I will place here what WE are asking for:
1. Multi DPI samsung stock dialer
Yes we know there is an stock ics dialer and contacts, some android market apps whit multi dpi aviable free or paid, but we dont want that.
Well that is the reason of this post, but I have seen what people belive, is the PERFECT dialer:
1. Multi DPI samsung stock dialer
2. AutoRotate disiable
3. Full screem picture
4. ICS compatible
5. Record call aviable
And going a little bit more... demanding. If a developer decides to guet on this heroe path, on the SAMSUNG STOCK contacts app, the ability to unite more than five accounts to one contact.
Hopefully a great xda dev will become the heroe and provide the apk that many are looking.
My fiance and I both switched to the iPhone 4S a while back, and today Im switching back to Andorid, to be specific the LG Optimums G. We both really like the emoji in iOS. I have been searching high and low for a straight answer and have yet to find one. I see posts that say, android 4.1 and 4.2 support ios emoji. Ive seen posts that shows screen shots, but the faces are droid guys instead of yellow circles, ive seen posts that say that emoji support is only black and white.
So my questions are;
1. Does android support emoji?
2. If emoji is supported, how are they displayed? (eg. smiles, android faces, black and white, color..)
3. If I use one of the emoji keyboards in the market will it tie into the same emoji used system wide? or do I have to use the dictionary method where I have to type the word for the emoji I want?
4. Is emoji supported system wide or only in the SMS app?
Less Important questions;
1. If they are droid guys, can they be changed to smiley faces through changing the ttf font?
2. If they are black and white is it possible to make them color?
3. Is it just possible to just flat out get the iOS emoji in Android?
Lastly, I cant wait to be a part of the android community again, iOS got really boring really quick!
Here are 2 similar threads that were never answered, so I thought Id link to them as well.

In android they are image files. So you would need a modded messaging app that uses some of the IOS images. Most tend to stay away from them though.

Ok, well is it possible to atleast get them in black and white just using a different font? Ive seen threads about it, but some of them were old, and not to clear. Needless to say ill be rooting the phone as soon as I get it home.

Oh...I thought that the plain black outline emoji were just symbols in a true type font? I know the full color ones use png files, so Im not really expecting to be able to get color. But is there any possible way for me to see at least see similar emoji when i get a message from an ios user?
What about something like this;
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klncity1.emojifontupdater&hl=en
I found a copy of the "Apple Color Emoji.ttf" if its not against the rules let me know and ill attach a copy of it. However when I opened it in font viewer it was blank so im not 100% on that file. Its probably blank because I dont have the PNG files for the actual emoji icons.
Also I know its a link to another forum, but what about this;
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ge...roid-4-1-ios-how-emoji-works-android-ios.html
Oh they are but they get linked to the system image. Those may work but no promises. The font color will need to be changed system wide to prevent the black. Best bet would be to use a 3rd part SMS app like Handcent. They have an IOS emoji plugin that will work for what you want as well as a ton of other options. (Avoid Go SMS)

I was considering Handcent, except we mostly use KiK because we like to be able to have delivery and read confirmations, not only that but we can text when were on WiFi in areas with bad signal. My thing is, I really don't care if there black, having them in just black is fine by me. Is it possible to get them to work in just black? Also they don't have to even be the same, just so long as there similar. Ive never liked the little droid faces.
Does Handcent have a messaging feature yet, or is it still strictly SMS?
Back when we were both on android we loved Go SMS because of its built in messaging feature, but for iPhone Go SMS is only avaliable for ios 5 and shes on ios 6.1.2, oh and the app is only available if your jail broken of course.
Yes they added a messaging service. I have never used it but it is there.

Really!? That may be a good alternative, because her iphone is jailbroken and handcent is avaliable for jailbroken iphones, and even if your not jailbroken aparently they have handcent messenger in the appstore. Ill have to look more into this. But you may have just made my day! Ill post back with what I find.
OK. So we tried handcent and it worked great full emoji support and all. However we ended up just using facebook messenger, I didnt know this but apparently FB Messenger also supports all the same emoji, but there more of a pastel color instead of bright yellow like on the iphone. FB is just more convent, not only that but the notification sound for handcent messenger on ios is absolutely horrible and you cant change it. I also found that for standard SMS my Optimus G already has emoji support built in, there just black outlines, so no color, but there all there.
Thanks for your help!
I have a Sprint Galaxy S5. I just switched from stock to CM13 and realized I have different emojis now. I really like the new foods and animals but I cannot stand the marshmallow people.
I know that I could use some app to switch out my entire emoji set but I don't want to do that. I only want to replace my people emojis and leave the reset the same.
Is there an app android that can help? If not is there any way to manually pick and choose emojis from different font sets myself (on android or computer?)
Thanks!
Use an app that supports it. I mean It's only what you see anyone. The person you send it to will not see the change.
I know that it is only what I see. I have a strong preference.
I want a system wide change.I know it is possible, I just don't know how.

Then you will, have to decompile the frameworks apk and change it in there. Mind you some apps like keyboards and messaging apps use their own as well so you may have to have a look around and find them all.
so there are a few specific emoji that are dear to me, and I've found that Samsung Experience 9.0 has completely changed a few of the ones I was fond of. How extensive of a process would this be? Would it involve flashing back to the older OS completely? Or is there a leaner solution?
Just looking for any help at all, your time is greatly appreciated. Mods, I apologize if I'm a) in the wrong place and b) formatted the title incorrectly.
Well, as the S9+ shipped with 9.0, getting it to run 8.5 is something that will never happen. I think changing the emoji would be possible with a wings font package.
????
You want to uphold your second amendment right to bear emoji?
It can be done, but you will need to find the emoji font file from experience 8.5
I'm no expert at this, but I HATE the Samsung fonts so I replace them with the EmojiOne emoji's
I believe default its NotoColorEmoji.ttf but Samsung uses SamsungColorEmoji.ttf
Just to be safe I replace both
I rename the emojione ttf to SamsungColorEmoji.ttf & NotoColorEmoji.ttf
I have TWRP installed and root. So I simply replace SamsungColorEmoji.ttf & NotoColorEmoji.ttf in /system/fonts
i want to the same but for other reason. i like the old way icon badges worked (they count unread messages not the number of active notifications).
