Based on work by JMRRJMRR at this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=496931
I've managed to do something similar with QVGA and I like it much better than the hexagon grid.
1. To use the original version, copy the contents of StartMenuList.zip to the \Windows folder.
2. To use the easy cab version from witschey, simply copy and run "Single List Start Menu - Titanium.cab" on your device
3. To use drkfngthdragnlrd's modified cpr's (in case you want to experiment), copy the selected files from "Titanium Start Menu.zip." You then have a choice of page scrolling or line scrolling.
4. Another cab is to be found in Post 68, again from drkfngthdragnlrd
5. Another version (cab) from witschey is in Post 83
Backup your exsiting files first!
Screenshots attached.
Update added 23-Jul-09 includes a working selection "halo" round the active icon. I like it. For this one, just copy the contents of StartMenuList2.zip to your \Windows folder and restart.
New update added 31-Aug-09 based on great work from witschey and drkfngthdragnlrd's. Please take a look at post 84 and post 88 for the details.
Looks great.. way more functional than the hexagon menu too.

Really??I only see 6 icons, with honeycomb i would at least have 9 icons 12 with the 4 row update...
Nice work looks good,it would be great if you could add 2 columns side by side, instead of 6 icons you would have 12 and it would still be very finger friendly.
Edit:icons names would be below icons in a smaller font size.

You can do that but because it forces a hexagon arrangement the second item in the row would appear below and to the right of the first.
I agree that you get more icons with the hexagon - it's just I find it hard to look up or down hexagons having got so used to columns and rows. The hexagon just looks untidy to me and this seems to be the only way to get some order.
An option could be to reduce the height of the rows and have, say 12 rows instead of 6. I like this as it is, though, especially as I can put icons in logical groups like media, games etc and it's very finger-friendly.
Thanks for the feedback

Our eyes are trained to scan horizontally or vertically but not diagonally.
The honeycomb structure is indeed the most finger friendly one, but it's not user frinedly as it does look messy and unstructured.

Games
Figured it out with Destop visualizer and apps organizer nm..
Care to share how you linked to the screens ?
Cheers
far as I know it can only be done with ADW right? Using launcher shortcuts. Been trying to figure out how to do that with launcher pro but don't have a solution for it.

Look at step four on the link below to see how to link to specific screens in LauncherPro.

Hmm - the link is still working for me. Just to confirm, you went to the URL below (without the spaces, obviously):

LauncherPro only lets you use icons? I think that the sizes LP use are supposed to be:
48x48
72x72
84x84
So in my case I wouldnt be able to use LauncherPro, I'm after using images the size of 355 x 132 to link to a particular screen on my Galaxy Tab 10.1...
Regards

Oh yeah - that's a good point...
I thought there would have been a detailed tutorial around but there don't seem to be any specific to a tablet.. just lots of little bits here there and everywhere
Ahh , I should have been more specific when I said I figured it out lol..I figured out how to direct my custum icons to open groups of apps via folder organizer..which im sure i very basic stuff lol..I still dont know how to link them to screens.

Wasn't working before but worked now! awesome. Now if I can figure out how to make it work with minimalistic text... I'd be able to make anything!
Right now, I can create the shortcut but can't get minimalistic text to reference the shortcut.

Oh and there's me thinking you found a way to link to screens lol
Nevermind, suppose we'll have to keep searching..
Yeah. Now that I know how ot make icons that go to specific screens, need to knowhow to make it so I can either make the transparent, or link a minimalistic text to it.
You would need to use ADW Launcher Ex. Install it, then hold on the screen to pop the widget addon, click Launcher Addons, then Select Screen 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.
This will create a shortcut to the specified screen. To make it transparent, select and hold the icon, select edit, click on the icon image, select picture, adw docks catalog, You can select any image and the shortcut will now be transparent. You can create a widget though minimal text, and then resize it to go over the now transparent screen shortcut.
I had issues with adw. It wouldn't allow me to use minimalistic text or the bob clock. Also. I wanted to use launcher pro for its Widgets.
It does not support copying text from a webpage like the newest Miui version, but that won't run on blur.
Edit here are the key settings for a forum browser that puts the XDA app to shame as well as many others.
Note: for attachment uploading choose the "manage attachments" under the text window not the paper clip dropdown. Just remember to close the blank popup, uploading works with ES file, upload files then hit the back button and preview changes to see the attachments shown properly.
NB: the above settings are for browsing forums. To post/edit just double tap to turn panoramic mode off which zooms very close then the editing tools work well.
I use Smart Keyboard Pro BTW.
Op updated to show best settings for forum use.

Thinking of getting a moto Z. My biggest concern is the dpi on the screen. From what i saw, the default dpi looks pretty ugly on the screen. Even my 5.2" Dtek50 has a much nicer layout of apps and websites with a dpi of 441. How easy is it to change the dpi so that its more or less in line with Dtek50 or google pixel?
Also how good is the camera? Main issue with my dtek50 is that the camera sucks..
You can change DPI with a launcher like Nova. For Apps, I'd start by rooting and removing the on screen buttons to free up screen space. Replace it with a pie app, where you drag from the bottom to left/center/right to use those keys.

I dont want to root yet. My basic concern is due to the default dpi if i open up a website in chrome what is shown in one row is a lot less than a smaller google pixel or my dtek50. For example a website paragraph which is shown in 3 lines for me shows in 4 or 5 lines in moto Z. This is due to
o the dpi setting. I read we can change this without having to root??

It can be done by adb on MM too (without root...). There is a thread somewhere...
You can change the dpi on the Note 8 without root and it's awesome to give you extra space throughout the OS.
Just posting for people who didn't know.
1. Go to*About Phone > Software Info*and tap the Build number 7ish times to unlock the developer options menu.
2. Back out to settings, enter the Developer options menu now at the bottom of the list.
3. Scroll down until you find the*Minimum width*setting in the Drawing section.
4. Change it to whatever you prefer! Higher number = everything gets smaller, Lower number = everything gets bigger.
Enjoy your extra space!

OH, THANK YOU for sharing this tid but of information!!!!
I love being able to adjust my DPI, I am so happy that this setting is available!

After a certain point the Samsung keyboard will do this. If you use something like Gboard instead it will resize properly. So it's either go back to a size supported by the Samsung keyboard or utilise a third party keyboard.

What's the highest safe value?
By the way, would be better to increase 10 by 10 that number? The default is 411 here. So I should experiment 421, 431, 441...? Or there's absolutely no difference?
I've set mine to 500. It takes some getting used to at first, but it's better than simply adjusting the font smaller.
456 the keyboard shrinks for me, I set mine to 455.
Root is pretty much a thing of the past now if ppl update is dead.

440 best for me s9+ smallest screen resolution
Edit: went to 436, keyboard characters were too small on Samsung keyboard which i love.
Edit² went to 438 and switched to gboard keyboard (bigger letters)
I am using 511 and nav bar at half size auto hiding everywhere, looks amazing! I use AI type keyboard which resizes fine
